This retrospective cohort study aimed to determine whether severe calcidiol deficiency [25-hydroxyvitamin (OH)D <30 nmol/L] improvement has a beneficial effect on cardiometabolic parameters in children and adolescents (5-17 years) with or without metabolic syndrome (MetS). Logistic regression analysis was performed to test for multivariate associations between potential confounders and changes in vitamin D (VD) status from baseline to follow-up care when predicting binary categorical outcomes. Of 562 participants, 146 (26%) had MetS. Individuals with severe VD deficiency (VDD) were more likely to have MetS with elevated blood pressure than those with sufficient (≥75 nmol) VD levels (adjusted odds ratio [AOR], 4.46; 1.08-18.43; p <.05) at follow-up. In the logistic regression model, every unit increase in VD across time decreased the odds of MetS (AOR, 0.98; 95% confidence interval: [0.96, 0.99]; p <.05). The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between mortality and the prognostic nutritional index (PNI) in the pediatric patient group with ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) infection. A total of 63 pediatric patients with a VPS infection and positive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture were retrospectively registered. The CSF specimens were analyzed to conduct culture and microscopic evaluation. A total of 44.4% of the cases were men and 55.6% of the cases were women. Patients were divided into 2 groups (survivor and non-survivor patients). When survivor and non-survivor patients were compared, it was found that CSF leukocytes, CSF glucose, CSF protein, CSF/blood glucose ratio, lymphocyte, albumin, and PNI levels were lower in the non-survivor patients' group. Nevertheless, blood glucose and CRP (C-reactive protein) were significantly higher in the non-survivor patients' group than in the survivor patients' group. Marching band is both a sport and a performance art. Organized athletics like American football, soccer, and cheerleading all have established epidemiologic trends of injury, including stigmata from head trauma. Despite the potential for mild to severe injury, there is a paucity of data on marching band-related morbidity. We examined the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System from 2012 to 2021 to describe demographic information and injury patterns. There were an estimated 20 335 marching band injuries (95% confidence interval: 12 892-27 777). The majority of injuries occurred in females (70%), and those aged 14 to 18 years (85%). Fifty percent of all injuries occurred in the lower extremity, and soft tissue injuries were the most frequently observed diagnosis (49%). Mild traumatic brain injury accounted for 6% of all injuries. Of marching band injury, 98% did not require escalation of care. The purpose of this study is to determine the frequency of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and the influencing factors in children aged 4 to 9. The cross-sectional descriptive study included 1176 children between the ages of 4 and 9 who applied for Family Medicine Centers between March 1, 2017 and April 30, 2017 for various reasons. Pediatric Gastrointestinal Symptoms Questionnaire, Roma III Version (QPGS-RIII) was applied to the volunteers (children's parents or caregivers), and Beck Anxiety Scale was applied to the mothers accompanying their children. A total of 603 (51.9%) of the children included in the study were female and 559 (48.1%) were male. When the applied QPGS-RIII was evaluated with IBS diagnostic criteria, IBS was found in 137 children and IBS frequency was found to be 11.8% (95% confidence interval [CI]). Central diabetes insipidus (CDI) is a disorder in the pediatric population resulting from antidiuretic hormone deficiency. The excessive production of dilute urine characterizes it and manifests with polyuria, nocturia, and polydipsia. The diagnostics of CDI is often challenging, especially concerning the underlying condition of the disease. This article highlights the diverse clinical presentation of children with CDI and diagnostic difficulties among patients with polyuria and polydipsia. The article also reviews the etiology, symptoms, diagnostic workup, and management of CDI. We present 4 pediatric patients (aged 3-13.5 years) diagnosed with CDI of different etiology: 1 due to septo-optic dysplasia/optic nerve hypoplasia and 3 due to acquired processes such as Langerhans cell histiocytosis and germ cell tumor in 2 patients. Central diabetes insipidus was the first manifestation of a tumor or granuloma in all presented patients with acquired pathology. Our study aim was to assess body mass index (BMI) change in children in the immediate 6 months of the pandemic, to follow longitudinal BMI change up to 30 months after the pandemic start, and to identify sociodemographic factors associated with these changes. Our study included a retrospective chart review of 1298 children 2 to 18 years old with office visits at an Indianapolis primary care clinic. Body mass index and sociodemographic information were collected at visits during 3 time periods: Prepandemic (March 1, 2019-February 28, 2020), Early Pandemic (June 1, 2020-November 30, 2020), and Late Pandemic (December 1, 2020-September 30, 2022). Data analysis indicated statistically significant increases in BMI monthly rate of change from Prepandemic to Early Pandemic periods. Interestingly, BMI rate of change stabilized from Early Pandemic to Late Pandemic periods but remained positive, suggesting children had slower, but persistent, continued BMI increase after the pandemic initiation. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of the 3-day micturition diary for children with enuresis. We included 53 such children (March 2020-December 2021), who kept a urination diary and filled out a questionnaire. The data were retrospectively analyzed; the differences in completion rate, sensitivity, and specificity between the urination diaries recorded for 3 and 7 days were compared; and factors affecting the completion of the urination diary were assessed. Compared with the 7-day micturition diary, the 3-day micturition diary is easier to complete; the data tend to be more credible; and its application in children with enuresis is feasible. A retrospective analysis was performed from May 2003 to October 2021 at our hospital. One hundred and eleven neonates diagnosed with gastric perforation were categorized into non-survivor and survivor groups based on prognosis. The mortality rate was 23.42%. Logistic regression was used to analyze the factors influencing the early neonatal death. The non-survivor groups showed more abdominal distension, vomiting, hypoxia, acidosis, hyperkalemia, and coagulation abnormalities. Serum potassium concentration (odds ratio [OR] 2.148, P =.043) was an independent risk factor; however, arterial partial pressure of oxygen (OR 0.977, P =.024), bicarbonate (OR 0.779, P =.023), and platelet count (OR 0.986, P =.014) had protective effects on neonatal death. Based on this, a visualized nomogram prediction model was constructed, patients who had a nomogram score of more than 163.787 was considered to have high risks of mortality, the area under the curve of this was up to 0.828 (95% confidence interval [0.733, 0.923]), the sensitivity was 80.0%, and the specificity was 76.9%. Transgender youth experience elevated rates of eating disorders, yet few screening measures have been validated with transgender patients. The purpose of this study was to provide initial evidence for the internal consistency and convergent validity of the Sick, Control, One Stone, Fat, Food (SCOFF) in a sample of transgender youth. Two hundred eight participants completed the SCOFF as part of a routine screening protocol. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis were used to establish the factor structure of the SCOFF in this sample. Relationships between the SCOFF, Adolescent Binge Eating Disorder (ADO-BED), Nine-Item Avoidant/Restrictive Intake Disorder (NIAS), Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 (GAD-7), and demographic characteristics were explored. The SCOFF was significantly related to all convergent validity variables, with moderate correlations with other eating disorder scales (ADO-BED and NIAS). Hypothermia can be the first and only sign of sepsis in young infants, yet there is a paucity of standard recommendations for pediatric primary-care office management of those infants identified. The SMART aim of this study was to standardize the identification and care of infants age 0 to 49 days at risk of hypothermia in pediatric primary care by decreasing the percent of infants with temperatures ≤36.5°C from 24% to 10% within 2 years. Over the course of this project, variation in documented temperatures ≤36.5°C decreased from 24% to 7% of encounters. Temperatures ≤36.5°C were documented for 951 infants or 13.4% (1078 of 8020 encounters). Of the 951 infants with temperatures ≤36.5°C, 96.1% were rewarmed in the office. Thirty-one patients ultimately required hospitalization. Application of quality improvement in a primary-care office decreased low temperatures by standardizing care, empowering staff, and triaging at-risk infants to the most appropriate level of care. Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) and fruit juice (FJ) consumption may promote lipid abnormalities in childhood. We examined the association between SSB/FJ intake and lipid levels using electronic health record data for 2816 adolescents. Multivariable logistic regression models treated clinical cutpoints for abnormal lipid levels (triglycerides [TG], high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein [LDL], and total cholesterol) as dependent variables. In models not adjusted for adiposity, elevated SSB and FJ consumption was associated with increased odds of having abnormally high TG (SSB: odds ratio [OR] = 1.28 (95% confidence interval [CI] = [1.07-1.52], P =.007); FJ: 1.35 ([1.09-1.69], P =.007)) and abnormally low HDL (SSB: 1.47 ([1.17-1.86], P =.001); FJ: 1.35 ([1.02-1.78], P =.03)). Adjusting for adiposity, a likely mediator of the relationship, attenuated these associations. These findings support the need for identifying unhealthy beverage consumption habits during childhood health care visits as a modifiable behavior associated with cardiometabolic risk. Down syndrome (DS) is characterized by varying degrees of mental retardation and delay in neurocognitive functions. Herein, we analyzed the morphometric shape of the corpus callosum (CC) in children with DS. Twenty-three DS cases underwent magnetic resonance imaging and have grossly normal CC, and 23 control group cases were included in this retrospective study (2012-2020). The CC was obtained from T2-weighted mid-sagittal images, and certain anatomical points were marked on the CC. Statistical geometric shapes and deformations of CC were evaluated for both groups. The age range of patients with DS and control group was 6 to 42 months. A statistically significant difference was found in the shape of CC between the groups (P <.001). Vitiligo is a common disorder; however, its management is unknown by many primary-care doctors and pediatricians. Most articles focus on adults; we analyze the characteristics and impact on children. A single-center retrospective study was conducted over 10 years on 254 children diagnosed with vitiligo. About 50.4% were male with a mean age of 8.24 years. There was a slight predominance of nonsegmented vitiligo. About 12.59% had family history of vitiligo and 11.4% of autoimmune diseases. Around 15.7% patients presented other dermatological diseases and 9.05%, autoimmune diseases. No significant statistical differences were found when comparing age, sex, and type of vitiligo with other variables. Almost 96.06% received treatment with calcineurin inhibitors and 66.53% topical steroids. Around 77% obtained repigmentation, and out of the initial nonresponders, 16% responded to phototherapy. In general, our results concur with the scarce literature. A long-term follow-up of children with vitiligo is needed to identify treatment side effects and diseases associated. There is still no evidence-based guideline and consensus on the treatment Sydenham's Chorea (SC). The first-line medication preference of specialists depends on personal experience and is variable. In this study, we evaluate the treatment results of pediatric patients who were treated with valproic acid (VPA). The medical records of 17 patients diagnosed with SC were reviewed retrospectively. The mean time to clinical improvement was found as approximately 5 days, the mean duration of remission as 13.60 ± 3.94 weeks and the mean duration of medication use was found as 17.96 ± 3.81 weeks. No side effects were observed in any of the patients and relapse occurred in 2 patients. A positive correlation was found between the initial C-reactive protein (CRP) level and the duration of medication use. Until evidence-based guidelines are established, VPA can be used as an effective, safe, and inexpensive first-line treatment option, especially in pediatric patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sleep is essential for maintenance and restoration of health, yet studies exploring this in hospitalized children are scarce. In a qualitative study, we assessed the perceived quality of sleep, factors affecting sleep, and the role of health care professionals in the sleep environment for hospitalized children aged 1 to 12 years. Data were obtained from 11 semi-structured, audio-recorded, and verbatim-transcribed interviews with parents, and analyzed using a systematic thematic analysis. The interviews were coded based on iterative assessment of transcripts. Subsequently, categories and interpretative main themes were identified. Four themes emerged: (1) being informed, keeping informed; (2) coordination of care; (3) parents as main advocates for their child's sleep; and (4) environmental disturbers. Parents reported differences in their child's sleep quality during hospital compared with home. Sleep is substantially affected during hospitalization, prompting the need for interventions to improve the quality of sleep of children. Parents provided valuable suggestions for improvements. The opioid epidemic has heavily affected adults of childbearing age, leading to thousands of children impacted by parental substance use. Few programs provide longitudinal support to these children. This article describes an innovative pediatric medical home model for substance-impacted children and their families, at an urban safety-net hospital. The team-based program directly serves children, and also devotes significant resources to parental health and recovery. In the program's first 3 years, 95% of enrollees were engaged in care, meeting the American Academy of Pediatrics' recommended periodicity schedule for preventive health visits. On-time receipt of childhood vaccines ranged from 95% (pneumococcal conjugate) to 100% (human papilloma virus). The program's high engagement in care shows promise in engaging vulnerable families over time. Future work should explore how to engage children from more diverse backgrounds, and should examine whether the model impacts other indicators of health and well-being for children impacted by parental substance use. This retrospective study utilized the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database to identify pediatric emergency department (ED) patients with playground-associated craniofacial injuries between January 2012 and December 2021. A total of 25 414 patients were identified. The majority of injuries occurred in preschool and elementary school–age children (90.3%) and patients were more commonly boys (59.3%). Injuries most often involved the head/scalp (52.4%), face (30.4%), and mouth (11.9%). Infant (32.7%) and teen (40.0%) injuries most commonly involved swings, whereas preschool (23.1%) and elementary school (28.1%) injuries were mostly associated with slides and climbers, respectively. Most patients were treated in the ED and discharged to home (96.5%), a small portion required hospitalization (1.6%), and one death was reported. Although the majority of the injuries were relatively minor and resulted in same-day discharges, these injuries can result in serious physical harm, emotional stress, and unexpected financial burdens. For pediatric patients with cancer, a healthy lifestyle is important for treatment outcomes and beyond. General pediatricians play a major role in the care of these patients, particularly given the improved rates of survival. Pediatric obesity has many negative consequences, but it is an area where primary care providers can make an impact and provide support to childhood cancer survivors. To provide the best quality of care for this population, there must be collaboration between primary care and oncology providers. Additionally, general practioners should feel empowered to offer standard nutrition and physical activity recommendations to all childhood cancer survivors. For pediatric patients who carry a cancer diagnosis, cure is no longer the only goal. This study evaluates the epidemiology of nonfatal head injuries among children aged 1 to 4 years associated with consumer products and identifies the specific consumer products associated with these injuries. Data for children aged 1 to 4 years who presented to emergency departments (EDs) from 2015 to 2019 for a nonfatal head injury were extracted from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System. An estimated 1 032 429 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 675 822-1 389 063) children presented to US EDs for head injuries, averaging 566 injuries daily. The average rate of head injury did not change over the 5-year study period (slope = −0.003; P =.852); it was highest among children aged 1 year (2.06 per 100 children aged 1 year), which was nearly 3 times that of children aged 4 years (rate ratio = 2.75; 95% CI: 2.73-2.77). Most injuries occurred at home (80.4%) and occurred from interacting with home furnishings (45.1%). This study underscores the need for increased head injury mitigation efforts among young children. We aimed to describe the frequency of treatment failure and associated risk factors for treatment failure amongst neonates with skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs). We conducted a retrospective cohort study of neonates 0 to 28 days old with uncomplicated SSTIs presenting to the emergency department of a quaternary care children's hospital from 2009 to 2017. Data were collected via chart review. Skin and soft tissue infections included the following: cellulitis, abscess, mastitis, perirectal SSTI, carbuncle, and furuncle. Of the 202 neonates in the study, most were term, afebrile with mastitis, or perirectal SSTI. Treatment failure occurred in 8% (17/202) of neonates receiving oral antibiotics; 10 of these neonates had perirectal SSTIs and 2 had clindamycin and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Neonates with treatment failure had increased odds of having perirectal SSTIs (odds ratio [OR] = 4.08, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.46-11.31). Pediatric vision screening is important because approximately 80% of visual impairments, including amblyopia, can be prevented or cured, especially if caught early. This retrospective study aims to determine whether the implementation of a machine photoscreener improves vision outcomes in 1- to 4-year-old children in an urban clinic. Before the vision screener, 91 patients were seen (control group), while 205 were seen following its implementation (study group). The number of children screened increased by 27.4% after implementing the photoscreener (57.1% study, 29.7% control, P <.001). All patients who failed the screening, 14.6% in the study period, were referred to ophthalmology (n = 30); 40% (n = 12) were evaluated, and 9 were diagnosed with a true vision abnormality. Instrument vision screening allows children as young as 1 year to be screened and allows for early intervention for potential vision-threatening pathologies in a vulnerable urban population. Bed sharing increases risk of sleep-related infant deaths. We hypothesized that infant sleep difficulties increase bed sharing, independent of social determinants of health (SDOH). In total, 191 mother-infant dyads in a prospective, longitudinal cohort study completed the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire at 1, 4, 6, and 12 months. Sleep characteristics at 1 month (latency, duration, night awakenings) were compared between dyads with/without bed sharing in the first 12 months. Infants who participated in bed sharing slept fewer hours at night (7.1 ± 1.7 hours vs 8.3 ± 1.5 hours, P =.001, d = −0.79), and took longer to fall asleep (0.7 ± 0.6 hours vs 0.5 ± 0.5 hours, P =.021, d = 0.43), even when controlling for SDOH variables that influence bed sharing. Maternal perception of sleep problems did not differ between groups (P =.12). Our findings suggest that infants with quantifiable sleep difficulties at 1 month are more likely to bed share. Bedwetting is a common condition in children. We evaluated the effectiveness of medical hypnosis as a first-line therapy in children with primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (PMNE). The study enrolled children in a prospective single-center pilot clinical trial consisting of 1 month diary of dry nights prior to using the commercially available hypnosis intervention (www.keepingthebeddry.com), followed by 3 consecutive months diary following intervention. Seventeen children aged 8 to 15 years old were enrolled and 12 recorded at least 1 month data after the hypnosis intervention. The median dry nights prior to intervention was 8 (0-17) days and improved to 15.5 (7-28) days by the third month post-intervention (P =.0033). All patients who completed the study showed an improvement. Self-guided medical hypnosis therapy showed significant improvement in dry nights without any side effects and any identifiable risk to patients. Feeding abnormalities, swallowing dysfunction, and gastrointestinal issues cause poor weight gain, oral motor dysfunction, and air swallowing in children with Rett syndrome (RTT). Pneumonia is the leading cause of death. Our study describes fiberoptic endoscopic swallowing findings in 11 female RTT children. Each patient was evaluated using the 8-point Penetration/Aspiration Scale (PAS). The average age was 7 years. All patients had tongue dyskinesis and prolonged oral stage. Eight girls exhibited liquid entering the airway without coughing, whereas 6 did well with pureed meal. Three girls had pneumonia. Age was not correlated with pneumonia episodes (P =.18). Pureed material was related with pneumonia (P =.006), whereas liquids were not. Pureed PAS was positively correlated with Liquid PAS (P =.008) and age (P =.004). All aspiration/penetration incidents occurred before the pharyngeal phase. No patient under 7 years experienced pneumonia episodes. Children with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) often demonstrate growth differences compared with typically developing (TD) children. However, growth charts have not been developed for this population. The purpose of this study was to create AMC-specific growth charts and to compare these values to those of TD children. A retrospective review of height/length and weight for 206 children with AMC was performed. Growth charts were developed and stratified over seven percentiles; these were then compared with growth charts of TD children. Children with AMC tend to be smaller in stature and weight compared with TD children, particularly in the first 36 months of life. Abusive head trauma (AHT) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality for infants. Determining when to pursue a complete physical abuse evaluation can be difficult, especially for nonspecific findings or when a child appears clinically well. This retrospective study of 7 cases sought to describe the presentation, evaluation, and diagnoses for infants with abnormal subdural collections identified on cranial ultrasound for macrocephaly, and to determine how frequently AHT is diagnosed. The results of this study showed that while each patient presented due to asymptomatic macrocephaly, the extent of the workup varied greatly. In addition, no infants had suspicious injuries for abuse during the initial evaluation or the year following. In summary, among the 7 patients seen for asymptomatic macrocephaly with possible subdural hemorrhage, there were very inconsistent child abuse workups. Foreign body (FB) aspiration/ingestion in children represents a major cause of hospital admission and mortality. Evaluating risk factors and identifying trends in specific FB products could improve targeted health literacy and policy changes. A cross-sectional study querying emergency department patients less than 18 years old with a diagnosis of aspirated/ingested FB was conducted using the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System database between 2010 and 2020. Incidence rates per 100 000 people-year were calculated and multivariate analyses were performed to identify risk factors for hospital admission and mortality. There has been a significantly decreasing rate of aspirated (−23.6%; P =.013) but not ingested FB (−9.4%; P =.066) within the study period. Within pediatric aspirated FB, black compared with white patients had decreased odds of same hospital admission (odds ratio [OR]: 0.8), but increased odds of transfer admission (OR: 1.6) and mortality (OR: 9.2) (all, P <.001). Enterococcus is a relatively uncommon pathogen that causes urinary tract infections (UTIs) in healthy children. Most enterococcal infections occur in patients with risk factors such as anatomical or functional urinary tract anomalies, also known as CAKUT (congenital anomalies of kidney and urinary tract). Children who are suspected of having UTIs and who have certain risk factors are often treated specifically for enterococcal infection as part of their empiric regimen. Our primary objective was to determine the prevalence of enterococcal UTIs among high-risk children, and specifically among those with positive nitrite tests, with the goal of avoiding treatment with specific anti-enterococcal agents. This retrospective study included all the episodes of UTI treated at a tertiary pediatric center during 2010 to 2018. The data collected from medical records included nephrological and urological risk factors, nitrite status, and isolated pathogens. Of 931 episodes of UTI, 467 (50%) were considered high-risk. In all, 24 of the latter had Enterococcus as a single pathogen; 23 (96%) of these occurred in patients with negative nitrites in the first urine dipstick taken. The sole patient with high-risk factors, a positive nitrite test and coexisting enterococcal UTI had a history of previous enterococcal UTIs. In pediatric patients with nephrological and urological risk factors, who have positive nitrites in urinalysis, the risk for enterococcal UTI appears substantially low. Risks of contralateral kidney abnormalities and chronic kidney disease necessitate follow-up for unilateral multicystic dysplastic kidneys (MCDK). A nationwide survey of senior UK pediatricians was conducted. Of the 60 responses obtained, 62% routinely perform a dimercaptosuccinic acid scan to confirm diagnosis. Eight percent routinely perform a cystogram to investigate contralateral vesicoureteric reflux. Sixty-two percent would routinely measure renal function (frequency ranging from once only to "every 2 years"). Twenty-five percent recalled MCDK nephrectomy being performed within the previous 5 years. Respondents voiced concerns that national guidance may result in an overcautious approach but could balance consensus and safe variation, and offer families choice and reassurance. The mean estimated cost of follow-up from birth to 18 years ranged from £258 to £3854. Results demonstrate significant variation in management, highlighting the need for a clear pathway to decrease unwanted variability and to ensure those at high risk of renal sequelae are recognized early, without undue investigatory burden. Childhood obesity is highly prevalent among certain populations of New York. This cross-sectional pilot study examined the associations between parental attitudes about outdoor activities and body mass index (BMI). A questionnaire was distributed among parents of 1 to 13 aged children at ambulatory pediatric clinics. Of 104 children included in the study 57 were of normal weight and 47 were overweight or obese. Most parents of children with BMI <85% reported frequent playground utilization, considered longer hours to spend outside on weekdays, reported a larger total temperature range for outdoor playground utilization and a lower tolerable minimum temperature compared to parents of children with BMI ≥85%, p <.05. Only having a parent born outside of the United States remained a significant predictor of overweight and obesity in the final model. Human parechovirus is a relatively lesser known virus that has recently spread across the United States, primarily affecting newborns and young infants. A particular strain of parechovirus, PeV-A3, has been found in the cerebrospinal fluid studies of many young patients in the spring and summer of 2022; however, short- and long-term neurologic effects of this virus are often not well known. We present a case series of 4 infants, 60 days of age or younger, found to have human parechovirus meningitis. Our retrospective study found that none of the 4 infants presented with any significant neurological findings, nor did they develop any specific neurologic signs or symptoms during their hospitalizations. A retrospective, cross-sectional study of children with suspected urinary tract infections (UTIs) 3 months to 18 years of age who had a urinalysis and urine culture (UC) during an emergency department (ED) visit between 2019 and 2020 was performed. Chi-square, Fisher exact, and independent samples T tests were used as appropriate. Median age was 6.6 years (interquartile range = 3.3-12.4). Urinalysis positivity was 92.8%, of which 81.9% of children were prescribed a first-line antibiotic. First-line antibiotic use was 82.7%. Positive UC rate was 84.7%, with 84% receiving a first-line antibiotic (P =.025). The correlation between a positive urinalysis and a positive UC was 80.8% (P <.001). Change of antibiotics based on the uropathogen of positive UCs was 6.3% (P <.001). The urinalysis and UC guided the diagnosis and treatment of UTIs. First-line antibiotics can be safely administered in the ED and prescribed for positive urinalyses. Vitamin D deficiency is a worldwide health problem. The current study aims to evaluate mothers' habits and knowledge regarding vitamin D deficiency in kids up to the age of 6. A questionnaire was made available online among mothers of children between 0 and 6 years. Most mothers (65.7%) were aged between 30 and 40 years. Sunlight was identified as the main source of vitamin D by most participants (89.1%), while fish and eggs were reported to be the main dietary sources of vitamin D by most participants (63.7% and 65.2%, respectively). Most participants identified the benefits of vitamin D, risk factors, and complications of vitamin D deficiency. The majority (86.4%) think they need more information on vitamin D deficiency in children. A moderate knowledge level was reported among more than half of the participants although there was inadequate knowledge in certain domains of vitamin D knowledge. The study examines the influence of a diversified diet, changes in the consistency of introduced foods, and the method of meal preparation during infancy on the development of sensitization and/or allergy in toddlers. Introducing more product groups into the diet reduced the risk of allergy at 6 months of age (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 0.17; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.04-0.71; P = 0.015) and at 12 months (aOR = 0.14; 95% CI 0.03-0.57; P = 0.006). Children with allergy and/or sensitization had been introduced to fewer product groups at 6 months (P = 0.003; P < 0.001; P = 0.008) and at 12 months (P = 0.001, P < 0.001; P = 0.001) compared with those without allergy and/or sensitization. Children with allergy and/or sensitization were fed ready-made, ie, purchased, products significantly more often than self-prepared foods compared with children without allergy and/or sensitization (P = 0.001; P = 0.006). Allergic and/or sensitized children tended to be switched to solids later (11 vs 10 months, P = 0.041; P = 0.037) (12 vs 10 months, P = 0.013) than children without sensitization and/or allergy. The earlier introduction of a varied diet reduced the risk of allergy and/or sensitization.
