Abstract

tools the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), the Malnutrition Screening Tool (MST) and the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool (MUST), and to ascertain which tool is most appropriate for the oncology setting. Methods: Dietetic records of 52 patients attending the oncology service at a Dublin teaching hospital were reviewed. The three screening tools were completed for each patient using data from their first nutritional assessment, and then compared with the clinical judgement of the oncology dietitian following full nutritional assessment. Data were analysed using Microsoft Excel (2003). Results: The MNA and MST had sensitivity of 92% and 79% respectively. The MNA and MST scores also correlated highly with each other and with the dietitian’s clinical judgement. The MUST had a lower sensitivity, failing to identify 32 patients considered to be at risk of malnutrition.
