Five cases of a distinctive facial eruption in Afro-Caribbean children are described. Distinctive features include monomorphic papules that are confined to the face, especially around the mouth, eyelids and ears, its greater prevalence in black children, and its tendency to persist for several months before spontaneous resolution. The mouse monoclonal antibody, NAI/34, in a standard immunoperoxidase technique, was used to count Langerhans cells in skin obtained from nine patients who were suffering from chronic plaque psoriasis. Biopsies were obtained from involved skin, clinically uninvolved skin and clinically healed skin following treatment with tar and /or dithranol. Langerhans cell numbers were expressed both as the absolute number of Langerhans cells per linear millimeter of surface epidermis and also as the number of Langerhans cells overlying 200 basal cells. An analysis of variance showed that in the active edge of a plaque of psoriasis, the absolute number of Langerhans cells was increased compared to adjacent uninvolved skin but when expressed as a ratio relative to the number of basal cells present, the number was decreased. This ratio returned to normal in healed skin. The ratio of Langerhans cells to basal cells in clinically uninvolved and in healed skin is the same ratio as we have found in over 100 specimens of normal skin obtained from non-psoriatic individuals. The distribution of the Langerhans cell in normal human skin was determined using the mouse monoclonal antibody NA 1/34 in a standard immunoperoxidase technique. Langerhans cells were counted in 106 specimens of clinically and histologically normal skin which was obtained from 95 out-patients (97 specimens) and five cadavers (nine specimens). Langerhans cell density was evaluated both as the number of Langerhans cells overlying 200 basal cells and as the number of Langerhans cells per linear millimetre of surface epidermis. The mean values of Langerhans cell density at each site were as follows: trunk 25 per 200 basal cells/32 per linear mm; upper limb 29 per 200 basal cells/33 per linear mm; face and neck 31 per 200 basal cells/34 per linear mm; lower limb 28 per 200 basal cells/32 per linear mm; palm 10 per 200 basal cells/18 per linear mm and sole 11 per 200 basal cells/17 per linear mm. A one-way analysis of variance with a multiple comparisons follow-up procedure showed that the Langerhans cell density in skin obtained from palms and soles was significantly reduced when compared with skin obtained from other body sites (P < 0.01). Twenty-three patients with histologically proven mycosis fungoides (MF) were followed sequentially using cell marker studies to investigate the possibility of specific patterns of T cell and Langerhans cell (LC) involvement, Fifty-five skin biopsies, taken before and during PUVA therapy, were studied using monoclonal antibodies directed against T cell subsets. Both T-helper (T[SUBH]) and T-suppressor/cytotoxic (T[SUBH]) cells were present in all biopsies, and the epidermal infiltrate contained proportionally more T[SUBSC] than the dermal infiltrate. Epidermal LC members were counted in 60 biopsies and were increased in early disease but fell dramatically during PUVA; some biopsies had large numbers of dermal LC, usually in focal aggregates. The article presents a biographical sketch of dermatologist Robert Prosser White. Prosser White was born in 1855. For many years he was an active member of the London Dermatological Society which, in 1926, became known as the St John's Hospital Dermatological Society. He was president of the Society from 1920 to 1923. He personally financed an endowment of £400 which was invested and the yields front which were constitutionally arranged to fund an annual oration intended to be delivered in perpetuity. Inevitably, Prosser White saw many thousands of work-related skin disorders in his everyday practice.

The article focuses on the correspondence of a reader of the periodical "Clinical & Experimental Dermatology," related to dermatologist Robert Prosser White's oration. The annual oration set up by Prosser White when he was president of the London Dermatological Society was delivered almost annually from 1921 until 1989. The oration was funded from the proceeds of a large sum of money bequeathed by Presser White to the Society, and his name was added posthumously to the annual oration. The decision to change the name of the Annual Oration from the Prusser White Oration to the Annual Oration of the St John's Hospital Dermatological Society in no way reflects any diminution of' the contribution which Prosser White has made to occupational medicine and to dermatology.
