We investigate the spatio-temporal characteristics of the austral spring Ross Ice Shelf Polynya (RISP) and its relationship with atmospheric circulation anomalies based on the sea ice concentration data from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) and the ERA5 reanalysis data. The RISP area series is derived by choosing 25% sea ice concentration as the threshold. Then the principal spatial patterns of the RISP are acquired by using the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. The leading EOF (EOF1) has a spatial distribution of a strong negative core in the northeastern RISP with a weak positive core near the Cape Adare, explaining 48.1% of the variance. This mode matches the wind pattern of the northwesterly on the western Ross Sea while southwesterly on the eastern Ross Sea, which reflects the zonal variation of the RISP. There is also a strong positive correlation between the RISP area and the PC1. The EOF2 explains 27.4% of the variance, and is mainly characterized by a large region of low values in the northwestern Ross Sea with a small region of high value near Cape Colbeck. Matching the strong southerly over the western Ross Sea, the EOF2 partly depicts the meridional variation of the RISP. We further explored the connections between the RISP and sea level pressure, and found that a deeper and more eastward Amundsen Sea Low (ASL) in November often coincides with a larger and more eastward RISP in December. The sea ice cover has experienced substantial changes in Antarctica in the past decades, yet its responses to the long-term trend of the local atmosphere are still not clear. With the aid of an Antarctic coupled sea ice-ocean-ice shelf model, the sea ice seasonality in response to the long-term trend of the local atmospheric forcing has been quantified based on a sea ice budget analysis. Significantly spatial variabilities have been found in the Antarctic sea ice in response to the long-term trend of the local atmospheric forcing. The sea ice area and volume decrease in the Weddell Sea and increase in the Ross Sea throughout the year. In the Amundsen-Bellingshausen Seas sector, the sea ice area decreases from December to June and increases from July to November, while the sea ice volume decreases throughout the year. In the Indian-Western Pacific Oceans sector, the sea ice area decreases from January to May and increases from June to December, while the sea ice volume increases throughout the year. The long-term trend of the local atmospheric forcing modulates the sea ice loss in the melting period mainly through modifying the ice-ocean heat flux over the ice base, while it governs the sea ice growth in the freezing period by the combined effects of the ice-ocean heat flux and the atmosphere-ocean heat flux. Although the trend of the surface wind can also lead to distinct variations by the local sea ice convergence/divergence, the integrated contributions over the basin scale are relatively small. Polynyas, or ice-free regions within the sea ice pack, are a common occurrence around Antarctica. A recurrent and often large polynya is the Terra Nova Bay Polynya (TNBP), located on the western side of the Ross Sea just off Victoria Land. In this study, we investigate the atmospheric conditions leading to the occurrence of the TNBP and its spatial variability, as estimated using satellite-derived ice surface temperature and sea ice concentration data. A cluster analysis revealed that katabatic winds descending the Transantarctic Mountains, account for about 45% of the days when the TNBP exceeded its 2010–2017 mean extent plus one standard deviation. Warmer and more moist air intrusions from lower-latitudes from the Pacific Ocean, which are favoured in the negative phase of the Southern Annular Mode, play a role in its expansion in the remaining days. This is more frequent in the transition seasons, when such events are more likely to reach Antarctica and contribute to the occurrence and the widening of the polynya. In-situ weather data confirmed the effects of the mid-latitude air intrusions, while sea ice drifts of up to 25 km day−1 cleared the ice offshore and promoted the widening of the polynya starting from the coastal areas. Knowing the atmospheric factors involved in the occurrence of coastal polynyas around Antarctica is essential as it helps in improving their representation and predictability in climate models and hence advance the models' capabilities in projecting Antarctic sea ice variability. Heat and momentum exchanges at the Southern Ocean surface are crucial for the Earth's Climate, but the importance of the small-scale spatial variability of these surface fluxes is poorly understood. Here, we explore how small-scale heterogeneities of the surface conditions due in particular to ocean eddies affect the atmosphere–sea ice–ocean interactions off Adélie Land, in East Antarctica. To this end, we use a high-resolution regional atmosphere–sea ice–ocean coupled model based on the NEMO-LIM and MAR models. We explore how the atmosphere responds to small-scale heterogeneity of the ocean or sea ice surface conditions, how eddies affect the sea ice and atmosphere, and how the eddy-driven surface fluxes impact the heat, freshwater, and momentum budget of the ocean. The atmosphere is found to be more sensitive to small-scale surface temperature gradients above the ice-covered than above the ice-free ocean. Sea ice concentration is found to be weaker above anticyclonic than cyclonic eddies due to increased sea ice melting or freezing (0.8 cm/day) partly compensated by sea ice convergence or divergence. The imprint of ice-free eddies on the atmosphere is weak, but in the presence of sea ice, air warming (+ 0.3 ∘ C) and wind intensification (+ 0.1 m/s) are found above anticyclonic eddies, while cyclonic eddies have the opposite effects. Removing the interactions of eddies with the sea ice or atmosphere does not affect the total sea ice volume, but increases the ocean kinetic energy by 8% and weakens northward advection of sea ice, leading to a 15% decrease in freshwater flux north of 62.5 ∘ S and weaker ocean restratification.
