In this article the author discusses a requirement that all Division I athletes of the U.S. National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) have tests to determine if they carry traits for sickle-cell anemia. According to the author, the NCAA instituted this requirement in order to protect itself from liability rather than to protect the health of athletes, and suggests suggests that the policy be replaced by further education to athletes regarding the health risks of physical exertion.
