The article discusses the Espresso Book Machine, one of which is located at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. The books are printed on demand from digital files and the process generally takes less than 15 minutes though there are limitations related to the kind of digital file and copyright laws. The machine is made by On Demand Books and the device was invented by Jeff Marsh. Todd Anderson of the University of Alberta comments on the high number and kind of orders that he has received for people who want to print books that they have either written or that are in the public domain. The implications of U.S. and Canadian copyright laws and the long wait that can sometimes result when repairs need to be made to the machine are discussed.
