This study assessed the impact of distancing measures during the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer diagnostic activities, including gastrointestinal endoscopy (GIE). It analyzed GIE volumes from 2020 to 2022 in comparison to 2018-2019, considering variations in resilience linked to socioeconomic status (SES). The analysis utilized data from the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Services database, covering the entire population and medical facilities. Diagnostic GIE rates (2018-2022) in Gwangju Metropolitan City and Jeonnam province were examined, comparing age-standardized rates (ASRs) by area, gender, and SES. The results indicated a decline in ASRs for colonoscopy and endoscopic gastroduodenoscopy (EGD) in 2020 compared to 2018-2019, followed by an increase in 2021-2022, except for EGD in the medical aid population. SES based and rural-urban disparities were evident in the recovery of GIE rates. Prescribing a P2Y12 inhibitor for patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) who have undergone percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is challenging because of the risk of bleeding and ischemia. We compared the risk of ischemia and bleeding between clopidogrel and ticagrelor in elderly East Asian patients with diabetes using the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry (KAMIR)-V data. This study included 838 patients enrolled in the KAMIR-V who were >75 years, had DM, AMI, and had undergone PCI. The patients were divided into two groups based on the treatment drug. After propensity score matching, 466 patients (ticagrelor: clopidogrel= 233:233) were included in the Cox regression analyses to determine the risk of bleeding and ischemia. The baseline characteristics were not different. The type of antiplatelet therapy did not affect the incidence of Bleeding Academic Research Consortium type ≥2 bleeding. There was no significant difference between ticagrelor and clopidogrel treatment outcomes with respect to ischemia risk. This prospective study of a Korean patient cohort (elderly Korean patients with DM) showed no differences in bleeding and ischemia risks based on the use of either ticagrelor or clopidogrel. Colonoscopy is a key procedure for the early detection of colorectal cancer. Despite its importance, the discomfort associated with colonoscopy often requires sedation, and the ideal sedation regimen remains to be determined. In this prospective randomized controlled trial, patients scheduled for colonoscopy were randomly assigned to two different sedation protocols. Group A received a combination of midazolam and propofol, while group B was given midazolam and pethidine. The study analyzed data from 51 patients, with 23 in group A and 28 in group B. The incidence of adverse events was similar across both groups. Additionally, no significant differences were observed in cecal intubation times or total procedure durations. Notably, group A had a lower frequency of required postural changes (1.0±.7 vs. 1.5±0.7, p=0.02) and a reduced rate of manual compression (52.2% vs. 82.1%, p=0.02). There were no significant differences between the groups regarding subjective pain or overall satisfaction. Both sedation regimens were found to be safe and effective. COVID-19 can lead to pulmonary complications, including organizing pneumonia. Steroids are essential in treating post-COVID-19 organizing pneumonia. However, research on the clinical benefits of initiating steroid treatment early for this condition is limited. To investigate the steroid initiation time in its association with treatment duration and corticosteroid dose for treating post-COVID-19 organizing pneumonia, we analyzed the data of 91 patients with post-COVID-19 organizing pneumonia at Chonnam National University Hospital between October 2020 and December 2022. Patients were categorized into early and late groups based on time from COVID-19 diagnosis to steroid initiation time for organizing pneumonia. The mean time interval between COVID-19 infection and steroid initiation time for treating organizing pneumonia, was 18.4±8.6 days. Within the early treatment group (treatment initiated <18.4 days after COVID-19), which included 55 patients, the mean duration of steroid treatment was 43.1±18.3days. In contrast, the late treatment group (initiated ≥18.4 days after COVID-19), which consisted of 36 patients, had a longer mean duration of steroid treatment 59.1±22.6 days) (p<0.01). Regarding corticosteroid dosing, the early treatment group had an average dosage of 0.5±0.3 mg/kg/day, in contrast to the late group, which averaged 0.8±0.3 mg/kg/day (p<0.01). Regression analysis showed steroid initiation time significantly influenced treatment duration (β=0.80 , p<0.01) and dosage (β=0.03, p<0.01). There are limited data on outcomes after implantation of everolimus-eluting stents (EES) in East Asian patients with small vessel coronary lesions. A total of 1,600 patients treated with XIENCE EES (Abbott Vascular, CA, USA) were divided into the small vessel group treated with one ≤2.5 mm stent (n=119) and the non-small vessel group treated with one ≥2.75 mm stent (n=933). The primary end point was a patient-oriented composite outcome (POCO), a composite of all-cause death, myocardial infarction (MI), and any repeat revascularization at 12 months. The key secondary end point was a device-oriented composite outcome (DOCO), a composite of cardiovascular death, target-vessel MI, and target lesion revascularization at 12 months. The small vessel group was more often female, hypertensive, less likely to present with ST-elevation MI, and more often treated for the left circumflex artery, whereas the non-small vessel group more often had type B2/C lesions, underwent intravascular ultrasound, and received unfractionated heparin. In the propensity matched cohort, the mean stent diameter was 2.5±0.0 mm and 3.1±0.4 mm in the small and non-small vessel groups, respectively. Propensity-adjusted POCO at 12 months was 6.0% in the small vessel group and 4.3% in the non-small vessel group (p=0.558). There was no significant difference in DOCO at 12 months (small vessel group: 4.3% and non-small vessel group: 1.7%, p=0.270). Alzheimer's disease has recently been classified using three biological markers (amyloid [A], tau [T], and neurodegeneration [N]) to help elucidate its progression. We aimed to investigate whether there were differences between cognitive function and the clinical dementia symptoms over time relative to the ATN classification in the amyloid-negative group. In the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) cohort, 310 participants who underwent all the tests required for ATN classification were enrolled. The cognitive function score differences (Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale 13 [ADAS-Cog 13], Clinical Dementia Rating Sum of Boxes [CDR-SOB], and Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE]) between the groups were analyzed using the analysis of covariance and score changes over time with a linear mixed-effects model. In the cross-sectional analysis, ADAS-Cog 13 scores were higher for A-T-N+ and A-T+N+ than for A-T-N- (p<0.001) and A-T+N- (p<0.001). In the longitudinal analysis, CDR-SOB scores for A-T+N+ deteriorated faster than A-T-N- (p<0.001), A-T+N- (p<0.001) and A-T-N+ (p<0.001). Hippocampal atrophy progressed faster in A-T-N+ (p<0.001) and A-T+N+ (p=0.02) than in A-T-N-. In-stent restenosis (ISR) develops primarily due to neointimal hyperplasia. Gallic acid (GA) has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cardioprotective effects. This study sought to investigate the effects of GA on neointimal hyperplasia and proliferation and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in a pig ISR model. In vitro proliferation and migration experiments were confirmed, after VSMCs were treated with platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF-BB) and GA (100 µM) using a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and a scratch wound assay for 24 hours and 48 hours. A bare metal stent (BMS) was implanted in the pig coronary artery to induce ISR with overdilation (1.1-1.2:1), and GA (10 mg/kg/day) was administered for 4 weeks. At the 4-week follow-up, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and histopathological analyses were performed. GA decreased the proliferation of VSMCs by PDGF-BB for 24 hours (89.24±24.56% vs. 170.04±19.98%, p<0.001) and 48 hours (124.87±7.35% vs. 187.64±4.83%, p<0.001). GA inhibited the migration of VSMCs induced by PDGF-BB for 24 hours (26.73±2.38% vs. 65.38±9.73%, p<0.001) and 48 hours (32.96±3.04% vs. 77.04±10.07%, p<0.001). Using OCT, % neointimal hyperplasia was shown to have significantly decreased in the GA group compared with control vehicle group (28.25±10.07% vs. 37.60±10.84%, p<0.001). GA effectively reduced neointimal hyperplasia by inhibiting the proliferation and migration of VSMCs in a pig ISR model. This study was conducted to investigate potential differences in vaccine efficacy between patients undergoing palliative chemotherapy and receiving adjuvant chemotherapy. Additionally, the study proved the influence of vaccination timing on vaccine efficacy during active chemotherapy. Anti-receptor-binding domain (RBD) IgG binding antibody assays and surrogate neutralizing antibody assays were performed after BNT162b2 or mRNA-1273 vaccination in 45 solid cancer patients (23 adjuvant and 22 palliative chemotherapy) and in 24 healthy controls before vaccination (baseline), at every two to four weeks after the first (post-dose 1) and the second vaccination (post-dose 2). The levels of anti-RBD IgG and neutralizing antibodies increased significantly from baseline through post-dose 1 to post-dose 2 in all three groups. At the post-dose 1, the anti-RBD IgG and neutralizing antibody levels were significantly lower in cancer patients than in healthy controls. However, by post-dose 2, the seropositivity of anti-RBD IgG and neutralizing antibodies uniformly reached 100% across all groups, with no significant disparity in antibody levels among the three groups. Moreover, the antibody titers were not significantly different between patients with a vaccine and chemotherapy interval of more than 14 days or those with less than 14 days. This study demonstrated that after second doses of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines, humoral immune responses in patients receiving chemotherapy were comparable to those of healthy controls, regardless of whether the purpose of the anti-cancer treatment was palliative or adjuvant. The most common aging-related neurodegenerative disorder is Alzheimer's disease (AD), of which the main symptom is memory disturbance. Though the mechanism of AD pathogenesis is not fully defined, abnormal aggregation of amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques and tau have been considered as key factors and main histological hallmarks of the disease. Astrocyte is responsible for the control of cells and the environment around brain and spinal cord cells. Astrocytes have been implicated with AD. However, the exact function of astrocytes in AD has not been established. In this study, we investigated the regulation of astrocytes in the AD model using primary cultures. We have demonstrated that oligomerized Aβ is toxic to neurons and can induce cell death in primary cultures. In the primary cultures containing neurons and astrocytes, amyloid beta uptake was observed in both neurons and astrocytes. To verify if the uptake of amyloid beta in astrocytes is dependent on neurons, we separated and cultured primary astrocytes with no neurons. Amyloid uptake was still observed in this pure astrocyte culture, suggesting that the uptake of amyloid beta is a neuron-independent function of astrocytes. Astrocyte activation was observed in both pure and mixed cultures. We aimed to identify blood lymphocytes as a prognostic factor for survival in patients with locally advanced stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT). This is a secondary study of 196 patients enrolled in the Korean Radiation Oncology Group 0903 phase III clinical trial to evaluate the prognostic significance of circulating blood lymphocyte levels. The median total lymphocyte count (TLC) reduction ratio during CCRT was 0.74 (range: 0.29-0.97). In multivariate analysis, patient age (p=0.014) and gross tumor volume (GTV, p=0.031) were significant factors associated with overall survival, while TLC reduction (p=0.018) and pretreatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR; p=0.010) were associated with progression-free survival (PFS). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, pretreatment NLR, GTV, and heart V20 were significantly associated with TLC reduction. Immunohistochemical analysis of programmed death ligand 1 and CD8 expression on T cells was performed on 84 patients. CD8 expression was not significantly associated with the pretreatment lymphocyte count (p=0.673), and PDL1 expression was not significantly associated with OS or PFS. Univariate analysis revealed that high CD8 expression in TILs was associated with favorable OS and was significantly associated with favorable PFS (p=0.032). TLC reduction during CCRT is a significant prognostic factor for PFS, and heart V20 is significantly associated with TLC reduction. Long-acting β 2 -agonist (LABA)/long-acting muscarinic-antagonist (LAMA) dual therapy has been found to be more effective than LAMA monotherapy in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, among patients with group B or D COPD, the characteristics of patients for whom LABA/LAMA dual therapy is superior to LAMA monotherapy in minimizing acute exacerbations remain unknown. With data from a prospective COPD cohort, subgroup analyses were conducted to determine whether LABA/LAMA dual therapy was superior to LAMA monotherapy in reducing the rate of acute exacerbations in group B and D COPD patients. Group B and D COPD patients taking LAMA or LABA/LAMA were enrolled according to the 2022 Global initiative for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease guidelines. A total of 737 patients were included in this study: 600 with group B COPD and 137 with group D COPD. Compared with patients taking LAMA monotherapy, those taking LABA/LAMA had a significantly lower incidence of acute exacerbations over 1 year. In the subgroup of patients ≥70 years old, there was a significantly lower risk of severe COPD exacerbations among group B patients taking LABA/LAMA than among those taking LAMA monotherapy (odds ratio [OR], 0.258; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.095-0.703). In contrast, in the subgroup of group D patients with COPD Assessment Test scores ≥25, compared with LAMA monotherapy, LABA/LAMA treatment was associated with lower risk of severe COPD exacerbations (OR, 0.115; 95% CI, 0.018-0.749). Sedation plays a crucial role in successful pediatric imaging, and chloral hydrate is commonly used for this purpose. However, the challenges associated with chloral hydrate administration, such as its unpleasant taste and potential induction of vomiting, remain a concern. Sweet oral solutions have emerged as potential solutions for reducing distress and providing analgesia. This study compared the efficacy of dextrose combined with chloral hydrate with that of conventional sedation methods. This prospective, double-blind, randomized controlled clinical study enrolled 160 pediatric outpatients scheduled for echocardiography. Chloral hydrate syrup (100 mg/mL) was supplemented with a dextrose solution (dextrose group) or distilled water (control group) in a 1:10 volume ratio. The sedation achievement time, Skeie scale score, revised Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, and Consolability (FLACC) score, and side effects (nausea, vomiting, hypoxia, and respiratory depression) were assessed. No significant difference in average time to achieve sedation was observed between the dextrose and control groups (24.4±17.8 vs. 24.7±17.1 min, p=0.92). Both groups demonstrated similar levels of sedation according to the Skeie scale and mean revised FLACC score. Although the occurrence rates of nausea and vomiting had no significant differences, the dextrose group had no cases of vomiting in children aged >24 months compared to the control group, which had three cases (30%). CD46 is a membrane-bound complement regulatory protein (mCRP) possessing a regulatory role with the complement system. CD46 protects the host cells from damage by complement. Expression of CD46 is also highly maintained in many cancers, including bladder cancers, and thus functions as a receptor for many cancer therapeutic viruses. In this study we report a unique role of CD46 as a progression factor of cancer cells in bladder cancers. Resulting data from a DNA microarray using CD46-altered HT1376 bladder cancers demonstrated a pool of target genes, including complement C3 α chain (C3α), matrix Gla protein (MGP), AFAP-AS1, follicular dendritic cell secreted protein (FDCSP), MAM domain containing 2 (MAMDC2), gamma-aminobutyric acid A receptor pi (GABRP), transforming growth factor, beta-induced (TGFBI), a family of cytochrome P450 (CYP24A1), sialic acid binding Ig-like lectin 6 (SIGLEC6), metallothionein 1E (MT1E), and several members of cytokeratins. Subsequent studies using quantitative RT-PCR and Western blot analyses confirmed CD46-mediated regulation of C3α, MGP, and keratin 13 (KRT13). MGP and KRT13 are known to be involved in cell migration and cancer cell metastasis. A cell migration assay demonstrated that CD46 enhanced migratory potential of bladder cancer cells. Taken all together, this report demonstrated that CD46 is generally overexpressed in bladder cancers and plays a unique role in the promotion of cancer cell migration. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of depression among Koreans living in urban and rural areas, stratified by socioeconomic status. The study included 216,765 participants from the 2017 Korean Community Health Survey. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the PHQ-9, with a score of 10 or higher indicating depressive symptoms. Residences with the words Eup and Myeon in their addresses were categorized as rural areas, and residences with Dong in their addresses as urban areas. Socioeconomic status was evaluated by household income and education level. A Poisson regression analysis with sampling weights was conducted and adjusted for demographic, lifestyle, socioeconomic status, and comorbidity. The adjusted prevalence rate of depressive symptoms was 3.33% (95% CI, 3.21-3.45) in urban areas and 2.59% (95% CI, 2.43-2.74) in rural areas. The prevalence of depressive symptoms in urban areas was 1.29 times (95% CI, 1.20-1.38) higher than in rural areas. The prevalence rate ratio for depressive symptoms in urban areas compared to rural areas sorted by monthly incomes was 1.39 (95% CI, 1.28-1.51) for less than 2 million won, 1.22 (95% CI, 1.06-1.41) for 2 to 3.99 million won, and 1.09 (95% CI, 0.90-1.32) for more than 4 million won, and the urban-rural difference was more evident in lower household income subjects (p for interaction=0.033). However, urban-rural differences did not differ according to sex, age, or education level. In conclusion, we found urban-rural differences in depressive symptoms in a representative sample of Koreans, and revealed that these differences may vary according to income level. This study examined the gender-specific association between stroke status and depression in South Korea. A total of 5,746 men and 7,608 women aged ≥30 years who participated in the 2014, 2016, and 2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were included in the analysis. The cross-sectional surveys targeted the general population consisting of nationally representative adults (≥19 years) residing in Korea. A 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire score of 10 or more was regarded as depression. A higher risk of depression in stroke survivors compared to the non-stroke population was not observed in men (odds ratio [OR], 1.51; 95% confidence intervals [CI], 0.82-2.81), while it was observed in women (OR, 2.49; 95% CI, 1.64-3.77). Compared to non-stroke women, women stroke survivors with a younger age at diagnosis (<60 years) (OR, 4.05; 95% CI, 2.28-7.20) and stroke with duration of ≥10 years (OR, 3.12; 95% CI, 1.63-5.97) had a higher risk for depression. Previous studies have shown that tricuspid regurgitation (TR) can be developed in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) due to annular dilatation. This study aimed to investigate the incidence and predictors of the progression of TR in patients with persistent AF. A total of 397 patients (66.9±11.4 years, 247 men; 62.2%) with persistent AF were enrolled between 2006 and 2016 in a tertiary hospital, and 287 eligible patients with follow-up echocardiography were analyzed. They were divided into two groups according to TR progression (progression group [n=68, 70.1±10.7 years, 48.5% men] vs. non-progression group [n=219, 66.0±11.3 years, 64.8% men]). Among 287 patients in the analysis, 68 had worsening TR severity (23.7%). Patients in the TR progression group were older and more likely to be female. Patients with left ventricular ejection fraction <50% were less frequent in the progression group than those in the non-progression group (7.4% vs. 19.6%, p=0.018). Patients with mitral valve disease were more frequent in the progression group. Multivariate analysis with COX regression demonstrated independent predictors of TR progression, including left atrial (LA) diameter >54 mm (HR 4.85, 95%CI 2.23-10.57, p<0.001), E/e' (HR 1.05, 95%CI 1.01-1.10, p=0.027), and no use of antiarrhythmic agents (HR 2.20, 95%CI 1.03-4.72, p=0.041). In patients with persistent AF, worsening TR was not uncommon. A reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a predictor for mortality in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). This study aimed to compare mortality according to the GFR and eGFR calculation methods during long-term clinical follow-ups. Using the Korean Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry-National Institutes of Health Data, 13,021 patients with AMI were included in this study. Patients were divided into the surviving (n=11,503, 88.3%) and deceased (n=1,518, 11.7%) groups. Clinical characteristics, cardiovascular risk factors, and 3-year mortality-related factors were analyzed. eGFR was calculated using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) and Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equations. The surviving group was younger than the deceased group (62.6±12.4 vs. 73.6±10.5 years, p<0.001), whereas the deceased group had higher hypertension and diabetes prevalences than the surviving group. A high Killip class was more frequently observed in the deceased group. eGFR was significantly lower in the deceased group (82.2±24.1 vs. 55.2±28.6 ml/min/1.73 m 2 , p<0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that low eGFR was an independent risk factor for mortality during the 3-year follow-up. The CKD-EPI equation was more useful for predicting mortality than the MDRD equation (0.766; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.753-0.779 vs. 0.738; 95% CI, 0.724-0.753; p=0.001). Decreased renal function was a significant predictor of mortality after 3 years in patients with AMI. Oxidative stress and dysregulated inflammatory responses are the hallmarks of inflammatory disorders, which are key contributors to high mortality rates and impose a substantial economic burden on society. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are vital signaling molecules that promote the development of inflammatory disorders. The existing mainstream therapeutic approaches, including steroid and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and proinflammatory cytokine inhibitors with anti-leucocyte inhibitors, are not efficient at curing the adverse effects of severe inflammation. Moreover, they have serious side effects. Metallic nanozymes (MNZs) mimic the endogenous enzymatic process and are promising candidates for the treatment of ROS-associated inflammatory disorders. Owing to the existing level of development of these metallic nanozymes, they are efficient at scavenging excess ROS and can resolve the drawbacks of traditional therapies. This review summarizes the context of ROS during inflammation and provides an overview of recent advances in metallic nanozymes as therapeutic agents. Furthermore, the challenges associated with MNZs and an outline for future to promote the clinical translation of MNZs are discussed. Cancer is a severe threat to human wellness. A broad range of nanoparticles (NPs) have been developed to treat cancer. Given their safety profile, natural biomolecules such as protein-based NPs (PNPs) are promising substitutes for synthetic NPs that are currently used in drug delivery systems. In particular, PNPs have diverse characteristics and are monodisperse, chemically and genetically changeable, biodegradable, and biocompatible. To promote their application in clinical settings, PNPs must be precisely fabricated to fully exploit their advantages. This review highlights the different types of proteins that can be used to produce PNPs. Additionally, the recent applications of these nanomedicines and their therapeutic benefits against cancer are explored. While the guidelines for adjuvant chemotherapy (AC) for colon cancer are relatively standardized, those for early rectal cancer are still lacking. We therefore evaluated the role of AC in clinical stage II rectal cancer treatment after preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT). Patients diagnosed with early rectal cancer (defined by clinical stage T3/4, N0) who completed CRT followed by surgery were enrolled in this retrospective study. To evaluate the role of AC, we analyzed the risk of recurrence and survival based on clinicopathologic parameters and adjuvant chemotherapy. Of the 112 patients, 11 patients (9.8%) experienced recurrence and five patients (4.8%) died. In a multivariate analysis, circumferential resection margin involvement (CRM+) on magnetic resonance imaging at diagnosis, CRM involvement following neoadjuvant therapy (ypCRM+), tumor regression grade (≤G1) and no-AC were considered poor prognostic factors for recurrence free survival (RFS). In addition, ypCRM+ and no-AC were associated with poor overall survival (OS) in the multivariate analysis. AC including 5-FU monotherapy demonstrated the benefits of reduced recurrence and prolonged survival in clinical stage II rectal cancer, even in pathologic stage following neoadjuvant therapy (ypStage) 0-I. Comparative analysis of injury and illness prevalence in elite and amateur athletes provides the basis for the development of tailored prevention programs. The authors analyzed the differences in frequency and characteristics of injuries and illnesses which occurred in elite and amateur athletes during the 2019 Gwangju Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) and Masters World Championships. The 2019 FINA World Championships hosted 3095 athletes in the disciplines of swimming, diving, high diving, artistic swimming, water polo, and open water swimming. While the 2019 Masters World Championships hosted 4032 athletes in swimming, diving, artistic swimming, water polo, and open water swimming. All medical records were electrically recorded in every venue as well as the central medical center located at the athlete's village. More elite athletes visited clinics than amateur athletes during the events (15.0 vs 8.6%, p<0.05) despite the ages of amateur athletes being higher than elite athletes (41.0±15.0 vs 22.4±5.6 years, p<0.01). Elite athletes complained mainly of musculoskeletal problems (69%), while amateur athletes complained of both musculoskeletal (38%) and cardiovascular (8%) problems. The most frequent injury in elite athletes was due to overuse in the shoulder joints, while that of amateur athletes was traumatic injuries involving feet and hands. The most common illness was respiratory infection in both elite and amateur athletes, while cardiovascular events occured only in amateur athletes. As the risk of injury varies in elite and amateur athletes, tailored preventive measures should be prepared. Owing to the paucity of information on the clinical outcomes in female patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in relation to the comorbid disease burden, we explored the differences in their clinical outcomes and identified predictive indicators. A total of 3,419 female AMI patients were stratified into two groups: Group A (those with zero or one comorbid diseases) (n=1,983) and Group B (those with two to five comorbid diseases) (n=1,436). Five comorbid conditions were considered: hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, prior coronary artery disease, and prior cerebrovascular accidents. The primary outcome was major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCEs). The incidence of MACCEs was higher in Group B than in Group A in both the unadjusted and propensity score-matched data. Among the comorbid conditions, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and prior coronary artery disease were found to be independently associated with an increased incidence of MACCEs. Higher comorbid disease burden was positively associated with adverse outcomes in the female population with AMI. Various candidate biomarkers have been investigated for the early and accurate diagnosis of Kawasaki disease (KD). We aimed to evaluate platelet activity using platelet indices (PI) in patients with KD or simple febrile illness to determine whether these indices might support a diagnosis of KD. Another objective of the study was to delineate the changes in PI from the acute to convalescent phases of KD. A total of 225 patients with complete KD (cKD), 110 with incomplete KD (iKD), and 71 with simple febrile illness (control) were enrolled. PI included mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and plateletcrit (PCT). We serially measured the serum PI four times for each patient with KD from the acute to convalescent phases: on D0 (day of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment) and repeated on days 2 (D2), 14 (D14), and 56 (D56) after IVIG therapy. Data from the control group were collected during the acute stage of the disease (D0). The platelet counts in the cKD (341±103×10 3 /mm 3 ) and iKD (374±135×10 3 /mm 3 ) at diagnosis were higher than the control group (290±128×10 3 /mm 3 ). The PCT in the cKD (0.284±0.085%) and iKD (0.313±0.109%) groups at diagnosis were also higher than the control group (0.246±0.108%). However, the MPV and PDW levels in the KD group were not statistically significant. COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy will likely increase in the unvaccinated general population because of several vaccine safety issues that arose during priority vaccination. To investigate the potential rate of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in the unvaccinated population and evaluate factors that affect the attitude towards vaccine acceptance, a cross-sectional survey was performed. A telephone survey was conducted in 1,357 people older than 18 years; 99 were excluded from the analysis because they had already been vaccinated (n=58) or hesitated (n=41) after an official call. The COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy rate was 21.9% and was highest among those aged under 30 years (33.4%) and lowest among those aged 65 years and over (8.7%). Age, occupation, and perceived confidence in vaccine safety and efficacy were associated with vaccine hesitancy. Extra-pulmonary neuroendocrine carcinoma is a rare and aggressive cancer. Although several biological and histological markers have been suggested as prognostic factors for this cancer, the prognostic importance of systemic inflammatory markers, including the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio, is unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the association between systemic inflammatory markers and the prognosis of extra-pulmonary neuroendocrine carcinoma. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 85 patients with unresectable or metastatic extra-pulmonary neuroendocrine carcinoma who received platinum-based chemotherapy as first-line chemotherapy from August 2007 to November 2019. We used time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curve analysis to determine the cut-off values. The cut-off values for the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-lymphocyte ratio were 3.0 and 158.5, respectively. There was no significant difference in the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status score, Ki-67 index, or response to chemotherapy between groups. The high neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio group showed significantly worse overall survival (high vs. low, median 11.1 vs. 21.0 months, log-rank p=0.004) and shorter median progression-free survival, but the latter was not statistically significant. The high platelet-lymphocyte ratio group also showed significantly worse progression-free survival and overall survival than the low platelet-lymphocyte ratio group (high vs. low: median 5.6 vs. 9.8 months, log-rank p=0.047 and median 13.8 vs. 21.0 months, log-rank p=0.013, respectively). In multivariable analysis, a high neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio was an independent prognostic factor for overall survival. To investigate differences of tear neuromediators between subjects with and without dry eye (DE) depending on the ocular sensitivity. Thirty-one subjects with DE and 29 subjects without DE were recruited in this study. The eyes were stimulated by exposure to an irritating product applied to the periocular region. Both DE and non-DE subjects were divided into the high sensitivity and low sensitivity groups based on the degree of ocular sensitivity to ocular irritation. Baseline tear film break-up time (TBUT) and corneal staining score were examined, and tear samples were collected. The concentrations of the tear neuromediators, including nerve growth factor (NGF), serotonin, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), substance P, neuropeptide Y, and vasoactive intestinal peptide were measured using the enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay. The baseline neuromediator concentrations were compared between subjects with and without DE based on ocular sensitivity. In both DE and non-DE subjects, baseline TBUT was significantly lower in the high sensitivity group than in the low sensitivity group. In the high sensitivity group, baseline tear NGF levels were higher in subjects with DE than in those without DE. In the low sensitivity group, baseline levels of tear CGRP were lower in subjects with DE than in those without DE. Tear neuromediators associated with DE had differences in their concentrations depending on ocular sensitivity. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has been used as an antioxidant to prevent oxidative cell death. However, we found NAC itself to induce neuronal death in mouse cortical cultures. Therefore, the current study was performed to investigate the mechanism of neuronal death caused by NAC. Cell death was assessed by measuring lactate dehydrogenase efflux to bathing media after 24-48 h exposure to NAC. NAC (0.1-10 mM) induced neuronal death in a concentration- and exposure time-dependent manner. However, NAC did not injure astrocytes even at a concentration of 10 mM. Also, 10 mM NAC markedly attenuated oxidative astrocyte death induced by 0.5 mM diethyl maleate or 0.25 mM H 2 O 2 . The NMDA receptor antagonist MK-801 (10 µM) markedly attenuated the neuronal death caused by 10 mM NAC, while NBQX did not affect the neuronal death. Cycloheximide (a protein synthesis inhibitor, 0.1 µg/mL) and z-VAD-FMK (a caspase inhibitor, 100 µM) also significantly attenuated neuronal death. Apoptotic features such as chromatin condensation, nuclear fragmentation, and caspase 3 activation were observed 1 h after the NAC treatment. The neuronal death induced by 1 or 10 mM NAC was significantly attenuated by the treatment with 100 µM Trolox or 1 mM ascorbic acid. NAC induced the generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), as measured by the fluorescent dye 2',7'-dichlorofluorescein diacetate. The ROS generation was almost completely abolished by treatment with Trolox or ascorbic acid. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of neurodegeneration. It is characterized by deposits of amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques and impaired memory. Microglia are associated with AD. They are activated in the AD brain and AD models. However, the exact role of microglia has not been established. We thus investigated the role of microglia in AD models using a primary culture and an ex-vivo assay. We showed that oligomerized Aβ is toxic to neurons in the primary culture. In the ex-vivo assay, a microglial cell line removed amyloid plaques in the brain of 5XFAD (AD model) mice. To verify if microglia can be protective for the neuron, we co-cultured neurons with primary microglia and treated them with Aβ. The loss of neurons, induced by amyloid toxicity, was attenuated by co-cultured microglia. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of once-weekly dulaglutide therapy as add-on to oral antidiabetic drugs (OADs) and basal insulin in Korean patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in real-world clinical practice. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 112 patients who received dulaglutide in a tertiary referral center. The primary efficacy endpoint was a change in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) between baseline and 6 months. The secondary endpoints were the percentage of patients achieving HbA1c <7.0% or ≤6.5% and the change of body weight at 6 months. At baseline, the mean HbA1c was 8.7 % (8.8% in the OAD combination and 8.5% in the basal insulin combination group). The mean adjusted HbA1c at 6 months decreased by -1.13% in all patients (p<0.001), and by -1.36 and -0.74% in the OAD combination and basal insulin combination group, respectively. A significant reduction of -2.9 kg in body weight was observed in all patients at 6 months (p<0.001). Approximately 34.8% and 23.2% of patients achieved HbA1c <7.0% and ≤6.5%, respectively. Higher baseline HbA1c and no previous insulin therapy were associated with positive responses to dulaglutide on multivariate analysis. Mild gastrointestinal issues (23.2%) were the most frequently observed adverse events. Acer mono is known to contain bioactive substances that exhibit beneficial effects in osteoporosis, gastric ulcers, hepatic damage, and pathologic angiogenesis. The current study aimed to investigate the effects of Acer mono extract on the invasive activities and cell-cycle progression of human fibrosarcoma cells. Cytotoxicity of Acer mono extract was assessed by MTT assay, in-vitro invasiveness of HT1080 fibrosarcoma cells was measured using matrigel assay, expression of invasion- and cell-cycle-related proteins was analyzed by western blot analysis, and that of E2F target genes was quantified using qRT-PCR. Acer mono extract did not show distinct cytotoxicity in the experimental concentrations used. Invasiveness of HT1080 fibrosarcoma cells and expression of cyclin D1 and CDK4 in them were significantly reduced in a dose-dependent manner after treatment with Acer mono extract. Acer mono extract showed inhibitory effects on the G1/S transition during cell-cycle progression; the active phosphorylated Rb protein level was decreased, and expression of E2F target genes was downregulated by the Acer mono extract. This study aimed to investigate the associations between various types of childhood trauma and suicidal behavior in the general population in South Korea. This mental health survey included a total of 1,490 general citizens living in a metropolitan South Korean city who completed a questionnaire that assessed respondents' histories of childhood trauma before the age of 12 years, including bullying victimization, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and physical abuse, as well as suicidal behavior, including current suicidal ideation and histories of suicide planning and attempts. The following psychiatric scales were administered: Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (R-SES), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), and visual analogue scale of EuroQol 5D (EQ-5D). Participants who experienced any childhood trauma had significantly higher HADS and PSS scores, and significantly lower EQ-5D scores. Additionally, participants with any type of childhood trauma were significantly more likely to have current suicidal ideation and histories of planned and attempted suicide. Multivariate analyses adjusted for confounding variables indicated that bullying victimization and sexual abuse were associated significantly with all types of suicidal behavior. Physical abuse was associated significantly with histories of suicide planning and attempts. The present findings showed that any type of childhood trauma was associated with higher levels of suicidality, anxiety, depression, and perceived stress, as well as lower health-related quality of life, in the general population. This study aimed to identify and assess the differences in psychological health problems between families living with stroke survivors (FwSS) and the general population without stroke families (GwoSF). A total of 4,514 cases of FwSS were selected for analysis from the 2013 Korea Community Health Survey. In order to determine control groups in GwoSF, propensity scores were generated based on the sociodemographic characteristics of age, gender, residential region, marital status, educational level, monthly household income, and employment status. Each FwSS was matched to 3 controls of GwoSF (13,542 controls) using a greedy matching algorithm with 8 to 1 digit matching. After propensity score-matching, the proportion of usual stress (30.2% vs 24.6%), depressive mood (7.1% vs 6.1%), and suicidal ideation (13.0% vs 11.1%) in FwSS were all significantly higher than those in GwoSF ( Ps <0.05). Compared to GwoSF, the adjusted odds ratios (aORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for psychological health problems in FwSS were calculated using multiple logistic regression analysis. The aORs for usual stress (aOR 1.32, 95% CI 1.21-1.42), depressive mood (aOR 1.14, 95% CI 0.99-1.31; borderline significance), and suicidal ideation (aOR 1.17, 95% CI 1.05-1.30) were significantly higher among FwSS than GwoSF. Moreover, the psychological health problems of FwSS were more evident in females than in males. This study shows that FwSS have poorer psychological health outcomes than GwoSF with similar sociodemographic characteristics. To evaluate the clinical characteristics of unilateral open-angle glaucoma, patients diagnosed with unilateral open-angle glaucoma from January 2017 to October 2018 were divided into primary open-angle glaucoma and normal-tension glaucoma groups according to the type of glaucoma diagnosed. The glaucoma and the contralateral eyes were compared, and the contralateral eye was analyzed for conversion to glaucoma and its risk factors were assessed during the 2-year follow-up period. Among 99 patients, 36 were diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma and 63 with normal-tension glaucoma. When comparing the glaucoma eye with the contralateral eye, the visual field mean deviation value (all p<0.001), peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (all p<0.001), macular ganglion cell layer-inner plexiform layer thickness (p<0.001, p=0.003), and optic nerve cup-disc ratio (p=0.005, p<0.001) were significantly different in both the primary open-angle glaucoma and normal-tension glaucoma groups. In normal-tension glaucoma, peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness was significantly thinner in the glaucoma conversion group than in the glaucoma non-conversion group (p=0.008). It was significantly associated with glaucoma conversion (odds ratio=0.97, p=0.023). In conclusion, in patients with unilateral open-angle glaucoma, the contralateral eye may develop glaucoma. This study aimed to examine the relationship between hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), one of the indicators of diabetes, and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), one of the indicators of inflammation. Raw data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES, 2015-2017) was analyzed. Among the patients diagnosed with diabetes, 1,479 adults were selected as subjects for our study, and their HbA1c levels, hs-CRP levels, sex, age, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, level of triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, hypertension, receipt of diagnosis, monthly average income, education, and drinking and smoking habits were recorded. Multiple regression analysis of hs-CRP was performed by dividing hs-CRP into quartiles using HbA1c as the dependent variable. The purpose of this study was to evaluate clinical characteristics and treatment outcome of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma of unknown primary (HNSCCUP), treated according to the method of our hospital. Six patients with histopathologically and radiologically confirmed HNSCCUP January 2010-December 2016 were enrolled in this study. All patients underwent radical neck dissection involving level I-V, bilateral tonsillectomy, and diagnostic esophagoscopy and postoperative radiotherapy (RT), with or without concurrent chemotherapy. There were no major complications resulting from surgical intervention. Duration of follow-up was 56.3±20.2 months (range, 28-82 months). There was no recurrence or late detection of primary site of HNSCCUP. All patients with HNSCCUP except one were alive, at the time of the last follow-up. The other patient had no recurrence of HNSCCUP, but died of colon cancer at 58 months postoperatively. Many studies about Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) have been performed to determine the effectiveness of EMS. However, most studies enrolled only elderly patients. Moreover, only a few studies have verified the effect of a whole body (WB)-EMS suit on young healthy women. Thus, the main purpose of this study was to verify the physiological effects of exercise training with a WB-EMS suit in young women. During the study periods, 24 young women were randomly assigned into two groups: 1) the WB-EMS training group, and 2) the control. All participants in the two groups performed the same low-intensity resistance exercise three times a week for 6 weeks at a training center. Group 1 used an electric current for WB-EMS suit which was switched on during the exercise period. Outcome measures were body composition, body circumference of hips and abdomen, isokinetic muscle function of knees, balance functions, Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)s, cardiopulmonary functions, and lipid profiles. All outcomes were measured before and after the exercise protocol over 6 weeks. A total of 23 young women (group 1, n=11; group 2, n=12) completed a 6-week exercise regimen. After exercise, we compared the differences before and after the exercise program in each group. There were significant differences (p≤0.05) in body circumference, cardiopulmonary function in group 1 and 2. In particular, group 1 that activated WB-EMS showed significant differences in the isokinetic muscle function on knee flexors and balance functions. We investigated the association between alcohol drinking status and depressive symptoms in a representative sample of South Korean adults using data from the 2017 Korea Community Health Survey (KCHS), which included 216,771 participants (99,845 men and 116,926 women). Depression was defined as a Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score of ≥10. Multivariate logistic regression using sampling weights was used to assess the relationship between alcohol drinking status and depression after adjusting for potential confounders. Alcohol intake was nonlinearly associated with depression; the risk of depression was the lowest in men who were moderate drinkers and women who were light drinkers. In men, heavy drinkers (odds ratio [OR] 1.41, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.19-1.67), light drinkers (OR 1.13, 95% CI 0.94-1.36), infrequent drinkers (OR 1.31, 95% CI 1.00-1.73), and lifetime abstainers (OR 1.38, 95% CI 1.09-1.75) were at a higher risk of depression than moderate drinkers. In women, moderate drinkers (OR 1.19, 95% CI 1.02-1.40) and heavy drinkers (OR 1.56, 95% CI 1.33-1.84) were at a higher risk of depression than light drinkers; however, infrequent drinkers and lifetime abstainers were not at a high risk of depression. In both men and women, former drinkers were at a higher risk of depression (OR 1.61, 95% CI 1.34-1.93 and OR 1.25, 95% CI 1.09-1.43, respectively). In conclusion, the association between alcohol drinking status and depression was nonlinear in both sexes.
