The ART model is applied to study the deformed UU collision at HIRFL-CSR energy area corresponding to the high baryon density region in the QCD phase diagram. The time evolution of central baryon (energy) densities in central collisions at Eb = 0.52 GeV/u shows that different orientation collisions will lead to different lifetimes of high density, especially tip-tip UU collisions which have an extend lifetime for the high density phase by almost a factor of 2 compared to the body-body orientation collisions. In order to pick out the interesting tip-tip like events from a mass of random orientation collisions, we study the relation between stopping power R and impact parameter b in different orientation collisions and find that it can enhance the purity of tip-tip like events when R increases. The refined topological vertex of Iqbal-Kozçaz-Vafa has been investigated from the viewpoint of the quantum algebra of type W1+∞ by Awata, Feigin, and Shiraishi. They introduced the trivalent intertwining operator Φ which is normal ordered along with some prefactors. We manage to establish formulas from the infinite operator product of the vertex operators and the generalized ones to restore this prefactor, and obtain an explicit formula for the vertex realization of the topological vertex as well as the refined topological vertex. According to the correspondence between 2D Young diagrams and Maya diagrams and the relation between 2D and 3D Young diagrams, we construct 3D Young diagrams in the approach of Maya diagrams. Submonolayer Bi and Au adsorptions on the GaAs(001)-2 × 4 surface are investigated by scanning tunnelling microscopy, low energy electron diffraction and first-principles calculations. The 1 × 4 and 3 × 4 reconstructed surface induced by Bi and Au, respectively, are revealed and their structural models are proposed based on experiments and first-principles calculations. Moreover, the validity of the recently proposed generalized electron counting (GEC) model [Phys. Rev. Lett. 97 (2006) 126103] is examined in detail by using the two surfaces. The GEC model perfectly explains the structural features, such as the characteristic short double-line structure in the Bi-1 × 4 surface and the 3× arrangement of four-atom Au clusters. The behaviour of water and small solutes in confined geometries is important to a variety of chemical and nanofluidic applications. Here we investigate the permeation and distribution of water and ions in electrically charged carbon cylindrical nanopore during the osmotic process using molecular dynamics simulations. In the simulations, charges are distributed uniformly on the pores with diameter of 0.9 nm. For nanopores with no charge or a low charge, ions are difficult to enter. With the increasing of charge densities on the pores, ions will appear inside the nanopores because of the large electronic forces between the ions and the charged pores. Different ion entries induce varying effects on osmotic water flow. Our simulations reveal that the osmotic water can flow through the negatively charged pore occupied by K+ ions, while water flux through the positively charged pores will be disrupted by Cl- ions inside the pores. This may be explained by the different radial distributions of K+ ions and Cl- ions inside the charged nanopores. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To understand the molecular and electronic structure of alkali metal ions, we carry out the MP2 calculation and demonstrate that the maximal coordinator numbers for the hydrated K+ and Rb+ are 8, while those for the hydrated Cs+ and Fr+ are 10. Furthermore, on the basis of the binding energy, the HOMO-LUMO gap and the electron affinity, the stability of the molecular and electronic structures of M+ (H2O)8 (M = K, Rb, Cs, Fr) decreases with the increasing alkali metal atomic number and the stability of the molecular structures of M+ (H2O)8-10 (M = Cs, Fr) decreases with the increasing cluster size. We perform a scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study on the electronic structures of √3 × √3-silicene on Ag(111). It is found that the coupling strength of √3 × √3-silicene with the Ag(111) substrate is variable in different regions, giving rise to notable effects in experiments. This evidence of decoupling or variable interaction of silicene with the substrate is helpful to in-depth understanding of the structure and electronic properties of silicene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is known that, when Ag is deposited on Si(111)-7×7 substrates in a conventional growth procedure at room temperature, no atomically flat Ag film could be obtained. We use scanning tunneling microscopy and low-energy electron diffraction to investigate the growth of ultra-thin Ag films on the Si(111) substrates at room temperature. Our study reveals that, upon introducing a Si(111)-√3 × √3-Ga buffer layer, atomically flat Ag films can easily grow on Si(111) with a critical thickness of two monolayers. Moreover, Ag film growth follows a layer-by-layer mode with further deposition. This novel growth behavior of Ag can be explained in terms of a free electron model (i.e., particle in a box) and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The electronic structure of silicene on Ag(111) is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A flat band at 0.9 eV below the Fermi level is revealed. We find that the flat band is strongly suppressed near atomic defects, domain boundaries and step edges compared to that on the flat terraces. The discovery of the flat band and its sensitivity to local perturbations provides a new way to manipulate the electronic structure and properties of silicene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
