With 4.28-km dispersion-flattened fiber (DFF), more than 254.9-nm 10-dB bandwidth on the right side of zero-dispersion wavelength and a 190.4-nm wide spectral region with the uniformity of within +-0.5 dB are obtained. While on the opposite side, 198.4-nm 10-dB bandwidth and 62.3-nm spectral region with the uniformity of within +-0.5 dB are obtained. More than 88 channels spaced at 2.52 nm on the long wavelength side are generated using Fabry-Perot (F-P) filter. The output supercontinuum (SC) characteristic is also analyzed by spectrum carving.

A novel tunable multi-wavelength fiber ring laser based on semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is proposed by using a high-birefringence (Hi-Bi) fiber loop mirror (FLM) as wavelength filter. With this configuration, the wavelength spacing of this laser can be varied by using the different lengths of Hi-Bi fiber. 8 wavelengths spacing on 450 GHz are experimentally obtained with more than 25-dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for each channel using 1.28-m Hi-Bi fiber in Hi-Bi FLM. The output power variation between different channels is measured to be less than 5.9 dB. The linewidth of each channel is compressed from 0.347 to 0.186 nm by 1.5-m unpumped erbium-doped fiber (EDF). Meanwhile, 17 wavelengths spacing on ITU-gird (100 GHz) are also obtained with 5.9-m Hi-Bi fiber in Hi-Bi FLM. All these channels can be tuned together over 0.4 nm.

A 10-GHz soliton source with pulse duration between 4-8 ps and wavelength continuously tunable from 1530 to 1563 nm is presented. Using regeneratively mode-locking technology, the harmonically mode-locked fiber ring laser could work without pulse dropout at room temperature when no cavity length or polarization maintaining mechanism is available. Applying only one 980-nm laser diode pump, the average output power reaches more than 4 mW.

The principle of broad-band orthogonal-pump (BOP) four-wave mixing in semiconductor optical amplifiers is analyzed in theory. The conversion efficiency reduces rapidly as the detuning of wavelength between the signal and pump increase which can be solved by introducing a BOP method. The constant conversion efficiency and signal-to-noise ratio are obtained over a large wavelength detuning range. The wavelength conversion efficiency with variation smaller than 3.88 dB over 52-nm range has been experimentally demonstrated by using BOP, with the 10-GHz output of distributed feedback/electro-absorption modulator as signal. Conventional single-pump scheme is also performed for comparison and the experimental results fit well with the theory.

The supercontinuum (SC) generation in conventional dispersion-shifted fiber (DSF) at the repetition rate of 10 GHz with a three-stage compressed gain-switched distributed feedback (DFB) laser as pump source was demonstrated. A novel SC pulse source with a bandwidth up to 120 nm was obtained. At the same time, the stable, narrow pulses with pulsewidth of 9.2 ps and time-bandwidth product of 0.46 were filtered out across the whole SC bandwidth.

Based on the coupled-mode theory of fiber grating and codes theory, the design of an optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) encoder/decoder with stepped chirped fiber Bragg grating (SCFBG) has been proposed. The length of each uniform subgrating, the realization of encoding and decoding are provided. Numerical result is also presented and discussed.

The nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) is used as a saturable absorbed to reshape pulses. Experimentally, an actively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber ring laser with figure-eight structure is set up. 2 ? 4 order harmonic pulse train with stable amplitude has been obtained when the RF modulation frequency is about 2.5 GHz.

We present a 10-GHz hybrid actively and passively mode-locked fiber ring laser with a dispersion imbalanced nonlinear loop mirror (DI-NOLM), whose nonlinear switching characteristic can make the laser operate at additive pulse modelocking (APM) mode or additive pulse limiting (APL) mode. When the laser operated at APM, 5.45 ps of transform-limited pulse series were obtained. When the laser was biased at APL region, supermode noise was suppressed and the laser output was more stable.

The advantages of using nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) to compress pulse with slight amplitude fluctuation and reflected energy loss are analyzed in theory. Experimentally the NOLM is placed in an actively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber ring laser to form a figure-eight actively and passively modelocked fiber laser. 12 ps mode-locked pulses centered at 1.543 ?m were obtained with the modulation frequency of 2.498748700 GHz. 3.715 mW output power is achieved with 50 mW pump power.

A passively Q-switched operation of a diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser is demonstrated, in which a GaAs film is used as the saturable absorber as well as the output coupler. At the pump power of 10 W, a stable fundamental-mode average power output of 2.11 W was obtained with a pulse duration of 140 ns, pulse energy of 76 ?J and pulse repetition rate of 28 kHz. A theoretical analysis that describes the passive Q-switching dynamics of GaAs is presented.

By using the amplified 10-GHz, 5.5-ps sech2 pulses with high quality and chirp-free from regeneratively mode-locked fiber laser (RMLFL) as the soliton source, 2-5 order optical soliton phenomena are observed successfully in a 4.28-km dispersion flattened fiber. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical calculation.

Focused on the low noise figure requirements of erbium-doped preamplifiers, a two stage cascade preamplifier was presented based on the optimized design. With the total fiber length of 31.4 m and total pump power of 135 mW, this preamplifier can produce above 30-dB gain and keep the noise figure below 4.76 dB for all C-band signals, with the minimum noise figure as low as 3.38 dB for -30-dBm, 1550-nm signal.

A broadband amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source of 88 nm is demonstrated using novel bismuth-based erbium-doped fiber (EDF) with the length of only 49.2 cm in a bi-direction pumping scheme. The maximum output power of 14.3 dBm is obtained under total pump power of 162 mW. The fiber loop mirror which works as a broadband reflector is responsible for the broadband output spectrum of this source according to the experiments.

An optimized two-stage-cascade double-pass structure L-band preamplifier was proposed and experimentally studied to overcome the shortcomings of low gain coefficient and high noise figure of L-band erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). The fiber lengthes of 6.5 and 32.5 m, pump powers of 130 and 119 mW for the first and second stages respectively are used in the experiment. When input signal power is -30 dBm, the amplifier can provide gain above 38.84 dB in a wavelength range of 34 nm (1568---1602 nm), gain ripple less than 2.04 dB (40.88---38.84 dB), and noise figures lower than 5.29 dB with the lowest value of 3.95 dB at 1590 nm. Experimental and simulation results show that this low cost and high pump efficiency amplifier is suitable for the application as an L-band preamplifier in the broadband fiber communication system.
