Objective: To observe engraftment kinetics, the incidence and severity of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), and clinical outcome on 40 recipients undergoing allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (allo-PBSCT)., Methods: From June 1997 to May 1999, forty leukemia patients with a median age of 35 years underwent allo-PBSCT. PBSC were mobilized with G-CSF at a dose of 5 micrograms/kg s.c. every 12 hours for 5 days. A median of 7.7 (2.0-16.8) x 10(6) CD34+ cells/kg was infused into the recipients. Busulfan-cyclophosphamide (BU-CY) was used as the conditioning regimen. All patients received cyclosporine A and either methotrexate (n = 34) or methylprednisolone (n = 6) for GVHD prophylaxis., Results: Engraftment of neutrophils and platelets was achieved at a median of 13 days (9-28 days) and 12 days (7-60 days) respectively. Patients receiving > or = 4 x 10(6) CD34+ cells/kg or given G-CSF post transplant had significantly accelerated neutrophil and platelet engraftment. Acute GVHD occurred in 17 of 40 patients (42.5%), with grade II-IV acute GVHD in 10 patients (25%). Chronic GVHD developed in 21 (9 extensive, 12 limited) out of 30 evaluable patients (21/30, 70%) with a median follow up of 380 days (180-900 days). Transplant related mortality was 17.5% and the relapse rate was 10%. The probability of leukemia free survival at 3 years was 72.5%., Conclusion: Allo-PBSCT can provide rapid hematopoietic reconstitution without an increased incidence of acute GVHD, but may be associated with a high risk of chronic GVHD.

Objective: To investigate the clinical effects of cordotomy on bilateral cord abductal paralysis., Methods: With unilateral cordotomy, we treated 4 patients with bilateral cord paralysis whose glottis size was about 2.0 mm to 2.5 mm. They were followed up for over one year., Results: One week after surgery, the tracheotomy tubes of all 4 patients were plugged and no dyspnea occurred during rest and mild action. Their voices were more hoarse than before surgery. After 3 months, the tracheotomy tubes were successfully decannulated, and in the following one year, their respiration was normal and then speech was clear, although their voices were still a little hoarse., Conclusion: We suggest that cordotomy be one option in the treatment of bilateral cord abductal paralysis.

Objective: To elucidate the airway responsiveness and its relative factors in asthma with natural remission at puberty., Method: The airway responsiveness was evaluated by provocation of methacholine (PC20). Blood sIL-2R, IL-4 and IFN-gamma values in the cultural supernatant of mononuclear cells, eosinophil count, basophil count and basophil releasability were detected in 18 asthmatic cases with remission at puberty (group I), in 20 asthmatics without remission at puberty (group II), and in 30 healthy controls (group III)., Result: The mean value of PC20 in group I was significantly lower than that in group III (P < 0.01), but still higher than that in group II (P < 0.01). The blood sIL-2R, and eosinophil counts dropped almost to those of group III, significantly lower than those of group II. IL-4 in the culture supernatant of mononuclear cells was similar to group III, but significantly lower than that in group II. However IFN-gamma was also similar to group III, significantly higher than that of group II. The basophil count and positive rate of human basophil degranulation test stimulated by mannitol with hyper-osmolarity were still abnormal, significantly higher than those of group III, and the basophil level was significantly related to the airway responsiveness., Conclusion: The asthmatics with remission at puberty have a certain degree of airway hyper-responsiveness that is related to the abnormality of basophil.

Objective: To screen for mutation hotspot of Wilson disease (WD) gene in Chinese population., Methods: Cycle sequencing was used to detect mutation in exon 8 of WD gene in 30 patients with Wilson disease., Results: The same missense mutation, Arg779Leu, was identified in 14 WD patients, four of whom were homozygous and the other heterozygous for this mutation. The frequency of this mutation in Chinese patients was 30%., Conclusion: The codon 779 (CCG-->CTG) of exon 8 of WD gene was one of mutation hotspots in Chinese.

Objective: To establish noninvasive semiquantitative ultrasonic criteria for evaluating liver fibrosis and differentiating cirrhosis from chronic hepatitis., Methods: A total of 66 HBsAg positive patients (chronic hepatitis 42 patients, cirrhosis 24) were included. Ultrasonography was performed 24 hours before liver biopsy. A fibrotic scoring system was used to evaluate the ultrasound findings in contrast with fibrotic stages in each patient., Results: The total liver fibrotic scores had a significantly positive correlation with the histological liver fibrotic stage (r = 0.952, P < 0.001); the stage of histological liver fibrosis (Y) was calculated by the total fibrotic scores (X) according to the experiential formula: Y = X/2 -2; receiver operating curves (ROC) showed that the best cut-off values for differentiating cirrhosis from chronic hepatitis was 10 with a sensitivity of 87.8% and a specificity of 97.6%., Conclusions: The total fibrotic scores of ultrasonic dimensional image provide a semiquantitative marker to evaluate liver fibrosis and differentiate cirrhosis from chronic hepatitis.

Objective: To explore the mechanism of autoimmune hemolysis and establish a more sensitive test for autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA)., Methods: IgG subclasses were tested in 40 patients with idiopathic or secondary AIHA by Coombs test with monoclonal antibodies. Hb, TBil, RC and FHb, as hemolytic parameters, were used to analyze the clinical implications of subclasses of AIHA warm autoantibody IgG., Results: In most patients IgG incomplete warm autoantibody was IgG1 (27 patients), but IgG3 (20 patients), rarely IgG2 (14 patients) and IgG4 (9 patients) also occurred. Three groups were analyzed: Group A included 20 patients with IgG3; Group B included 14 patients with IgG1 bit without IgG3; Group C included 6 patients without IgG1 and IgG3. There were significant differences (P < 0.01) between groups in Hb, TBil, RC and FHb. Moreover, we also found that the sensitivity of Coombs test with polyclonal antiserums was 90.0%, while that of Coombs test with monoclonal antibodies was 97.5%. The effect of treatment was worst in patients with positive IgG3 autoantibody, whose hemolysis recurred frequently., Conclusion: IgG3 autoantibody was the most effective in bringing about red cell destruction, IgG1 autoantibody was less effective, IgG2 even less, whereas IgG4 autoantibody was shown to hardly affect red cell survival. Coombs test with monoclonal antibodies was more sensitive than that with polyclonal antiserums. Patients' respondence to treatment correlated with the type of IgG subclasses.

Objective: To establish a test model for phototoxic agents using the method of chemiluminescence., Methods: The phototoxicity of pipemidic acid, doxycycline, griseofuvin and chlorpromazine was detected. These agents and distilled water were irradiated with ultraviolet A (UVA) in the presence of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide reduced (NADH), and the duplicated samples were incubated in the dark as dark controls. Then luminol was added to the test samples, and the chemiluminescent value was counted and calculated., Results: Chemiluminescent values of pipemidic acid, doxycycline and griseofuvin were significantly higher than those in controls. The result of linear regression analysis showed that phototoxic intensity was linear correlated with UVA dosage. The regression coefficient for distilled water was 0.56, indicating that the luminescent value (LV) rose slightly after UVA irradiation. For pipemidic acid, griseofuvin and doxycycline, the regression coefficients reached 76.96, 254.33 and 92.61 respectively, significantly increased in comparison with those of negative controls (P < 0.01)., Conclusion: Phototoxicity of pipemidic acid, doxycycline and griseofuvin can be detected with the method of chemiluminescence.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of traditional Chinese herbal medicine on the prevention of hemolytic disease caused by maternal-fetal blood group incompatibility., Methods: A total of 126 Chinese patients with maternal-fetal blood group incompatibility were studied, including 105 cases of ABO type and 21 cases of Rh type incompatibility. The traditional Chinese herbal medicine was used for preventative treatment in 79 cases, and 47 cases served as controls. The prescription consisted of Herba leonuri 500 g, white peony root 180 g, Banksia rose 12 g, root of Chinese angelica 150 g and Rhizomal ligustica 150 g., Results: Preventative treatment with traditional Chinese herbal medicine significantly reduced the perinatal mortality rate in cases of Rh type incompatibility, from 50.0% in the control group to 7.7% in the treatment group (P < 0.05). There was no death in the cases of ABO incompatibility. The traditional Chinese herbal medicine also decreased the degree of hemolysis. The percentage of severe cases in the control group was 29.8%, while it was 15.2% in the treatment group (P = 0.05). The duration of treatment was closely related to the outcomes. In patients who used traditional Chinese herbal medicine for more than 10 weeks, the incidence of severe hemolysis was 8.2%, compared with 38.9% in those treated for less than 10 weeks (P < 0.05). The change of serum immune antibody (A and/or B) titers during the treatment was a very important predictive factor for the outcome of the pregnancy., Conclusion: Traditional Chinese herbal medicine is effective not only for ABO type but also for Rh type maternal-fetal blood group incompatibility, with no side effects.

Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of CT-guided stereotactic biopsy in making correct pathological diagnosis and choosing corresponding management of brain tumors., Methods: From 1991 to 1995, CT-guided stereotactic biopsy was performed in 310 patients with intracerebral lesions which were deep-seated or located in certain main functional areas. The patients were 198 men and 112 women. Their ages ranged from 4.5 to 70 years (average: 39.3 years). The lesions were located in the deep cerebrum (74 patients), the sellar area (62), the basal ganglion (51), the posterior part of the third ventricle (38), other intraventricleular area (21), the cerebellum (17) and the brain stem (9), and intracranial multiple lesions were found in 38 patients., Results: Brain tumors were diagnosed pathologically in 266 patients (85.8%); inflammatory process in 25 (8.1%), other lesions in 8 (2.6%) and uncertain cases were 11 (3.6%). The overall positive rate of biopsy was 96.4% and the positive rate for brain tumor was 85.8%. Intracranial hematomas after biopsy were found in 5 patients (1.6%). There were no deaths induced by the biopsy or other serious complications., Conclusions: The results suggest that CT-guided stereotactic biopsy is a reliable method for histopathological diagnosis of brain tumors and it is also of great help in selecting appropriate management.

Objective: To clarify the diagnosis and management of acute central cervical cord injury., Methods: Eighty-nine patients with acute cervical central cord injury were retrospectively reviewed. Sixty-three patients were treated conservatively and 26 were treated surgically. There were two acute deaths. Eighty-seven patients were followed up for 3 months to 15 years., Results: Their average neurological score (ASIA) was increased from 41.7 at admission to 83.1 at follow-up., Conclusions: Acute central cervical cord injury should be differentiated from complete spinal cord injury, cervical myelopathy, cruciate paralysis and C8 nerve root injury. When compression of nerve tissue or cervical instability is identified, operative intervention should be indicated. The prognosis is less optimistic in the patients with severe primary injury and at old age.

Objective: To observe the effects of antisense TGF alpha on the growth of human pancreatic carcinoma cell line cells., Methods: A recombinant retroviral vector expressing antisense TGF alpha was constructed, and transfected the ecotropic packaging cell line psi-2 with lipofectin. After the amphotropic packaging cell line PA317 was transfected with the virus supernatant of psi-2, the replication-defective, amphotropic retroviral supernatant was used to infect human pancreatic carcinoma cell line PC-7. Following puromycin selection, puromycin-resistant colonies were pooled and expanded to a cell line PC-7/AS-TGF alpha., Results: The retroviral integration in the genomes of psi-2, PA317 and transformant PC-7 cells was confirmed by Southern blot hybridization. Northern blot hybridization showed a down regulation of endogenous TGF alpha in PC-7/AS-TGF alpha cell line. The high levels of growth inhibition and reduction of 3H-TdR incorporation in PC-7/AS-TGF alpha were evident. Also, the soft agar colony-formation and tumorigenicity in nude mice were significantly suppressed by antisense TGF alpha., Conclusion: The antisense TGF alpha expressing vector can block the target gene expression, suppress the cell growth and partially reverse the malignant phenotype of pancreatic carcinoma cells.

Objective: To evaluate the beneficial effects of early coronary reperfusion on left ventricular remodeling (LVRM) and systolic function in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI)., Methods: Eighty-one patients with first AMI in the convalescent stage and having undergone left ventriculography (LVG) and coronary arteriography (CAG) were divided into four groups: the anterolateral wall (ALW) myocardial infarction (MI) non-reperfusion (n = 20) and reperfusion (n = 21), and inferoposterial wall (IPW) MI non-reperfusion (n = 20) and reperfusion (n = 20), according to infarct location and early treatment with or without successful coronary reperfusion therapy within 6 hours after onset of symptoms. By LVG, the parameters of LVRM and systolic function in the four MI groups were analyzed and compared with those in normal group (n = 25) and between the two reperfusion and non-reperfusion MI groups., Results: In both ALW and IPW MI non-reperfusion groups, the left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic volume (EDV), circumference (EDC), short-axis dimension (EDD), short to long axis ratio (ED-D/L), sphericity index (ED-SI) and end-systolic volume (ESV) were all significantly increased (P < 0.01-0.001), while LV ejection fractions (LVEF) were significantly decreased (both P < 0.001) when compared with those of normal group; and the increase in ESV and decrease in LVEF were both significantly greater in ALW than in IPW MI groups (both P < 0.01). In both ALW and IPW MI reperfusion groups, however, the EDV, EDD, ESV, as well as the extent and severity of regional wall motion abnormality (RW-MA) were significantly smaller (P < 0.05-0.001), while LVEF were significantly higher (P < 0.01-0.001) when compared with those in the two non-reperfusion MI groups respectively. There were no longer significant differences in LVEF and ESV between ALW and IPW MI groups (both P > 0.05). The EDC in IPW MI reperfusion group and the ED-D/L and ED-SI in ALW MI reperfusion group were also significantly reduced compared with those in the two non-reperfusion MI groups respectively (P < 0.05-0.001). All the above parameters in the two reperfusion MI group were decreased to the normal in comparison with normal group except ESV and LVEF, and ED-D/L and ED-SI in IPW MI group., Conclusion: It was indicated that in both ALW and IPW MI non-reperfusion groups, LVRM had occurred in convalescent stage of AMI with an increase in EDV and EDC, spherical change in LV shape, and accompanying reduction in LV systolic function; and early coronary reperfusion in AMI could reduce the extent and severity of RWMA, prevent from LV enlargement and remodeling, and preserve or improve LV systolic function with more prominence in ALW MI.

Objective: To investigate the function and characteristics of histamine receptors on the hemopoietic progenitor cells., Methods: BDF1 mice (both male and female), inbred at our university, aged 8-12 weeks, weighing 20-24 g, were used in this study. Bone marrow cells were incubated for 1 hour at 37 degrees C with 2-AT (H1 receptor agonist) or impromidine (H2 receptor agonist) alone, or in combination with the antagonists pyrilamine or cimetidine respectively. Control experiment was performed in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's Medium (DMEM) alone. Cells treated with different drugs were performed by colony forming unit-granulocyte-macrophage (CFU-GM) and colony forming unit-megakaryocyte (CFU-Meg) assay., Results: When bone marrow cells were treated with 10(-8) mol/L to 10(-5) mol/L of 2-thiazolylethylamine (2-AT) which had no influence on CFU-GM and CFU-Meg proliferation, 10(-8) mol/L to 10(-5) mol/L of impromidine could increase the number of CFU-GM and CFU-Meg colonies. The effects of H2 receptor agonists on CFU-GM, CFU-Meg could be antagonized by H1 receptor agonist., Conclusions: Our findings suggest the existence of histamine H1 and H2 receptors on the hemopoietic progenitor cells and the antagonism between two different histamine receptor subtypes on the proliferation of CFU-GM and CFU-Meg.

Objective: To evaluate long-term efficacy of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) and the factors affecting its efficacy in Chinese patients., Methods: Two hundred and twenty-nine patients who underwent successful PTCA in this institution were followed-up by direct interview or letters. The rate of follow-up was 95%. The period of follow-up were 0.5-8.4 (with mean of 2.3 +/- 1.8 years)., Results: Angina Pectoris recurred in 76 (33.2%) of the patients. Cox regression analysis revealed that the relative risk of recurrence of angina pectoris was increased among the patients with triple vessel disease and with history of hypertension. During the period of follow-up, 2 (0.9%) patients died, 6 (2.6%) had non-fatal acute myocardial infarction, 4 (1.7%) had coronary artery bypass graft surgery and 29 (12.7%) had repeat PTCA. The cardiac event-free survival rate calculated by Kaplan-Meier method was 84.8% at the first year and 70.5% at the eighth year. Cox regression analysis revealed that there were positive correlation between the relative risks of cardiac events and stenosis of lesions before PTCA and residual stenosis of LAD after PTCA., Conclusion: The long-term efficacy of PTCA in Chinese patients was good. The results of this study suggest that to decrease the residual stenosis of LAD during procedures could probably decrease the relative risk of cardiac events during follow-up.

Objective: To investigate the possible role of endothelin-1 (ET-1) and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) in the pathogenesis of pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH)., Material and Methods: A total of 110 normal pregnant women (in three trimesters, labour or postpartum) and 30 patients with PIH were studied by measuring plasma ET-1 and ANP levels by radioimmunoassay; 23 normal non-pregnant women were selected as controls., Results: Compared with normal non-pregnant women, plasma ET-1 levels were significantly decreased in normal pregnant women during all three trimesters. Plasma ET-1 level was significantly increased in the 2nd stage of labour, compared with that in the 3rd trimester. There were significant positive correlation between plasma ET-1 level and mean arterial pressure in normal non-pregnant women and normal pregnant women in all three trimesters. Compared with matched normal pregnant women, plasma ET-1 and ANP levels were significantly increased, while plasma ANP/ET-1 ratio was significantly decreased in PIH patients. Significant positive correlations existed between plasma ET-1 level and mean arterial pressure or the score index of the severity of PIH. After the treatment with magnesium sulfate infusion, plasma ET-1 and ANP levels were significantly decreased, but plasma ANP/ET-1 ratio was significantly increased in PIH patients., Conclusions: Augmentation of ET-1 secretion and attenuation of ANP function may be responsible for the development of PIH. ET-1 secretion may be indirectly influenced by magnesium in PIH.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between left ventricular diastolic dysfunction and episodes of angina decubitus., Methods: The study population consisted of three groups, groups I (20 controls) had no cardiovascular diseases. Group II (20 patients) had coronary artery disease (CAD) without angina decubitus. Group III (24 cases with ejection fraction (EF) > 45%) were selected from 26 patients with angina decubitus., Results: Left ventriculography (LVG) showed that left ventricular (LV) first 1/3 filling fraction (1/3FF) was significantly reduced in groups III as compared with groups II and I (P < 0.01). Left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP) significantly increased in patients with angina decubitus after LVG as compared with that before LVG (P < 0.01). However, there were no statistically differences in LVEDP, before and after LVG in both groups II and I., Conclusions: Patients with angina decubitus have abnormalities of LV diastolic filling and decrease in LV compliance.

Objective: To approach the efficacy of emergency percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) in Chinese patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI) complicated by cardiogenic shock., Methods: Twelve patients with cardiogenic shock treated by emergency PTCA in this institution from January 1990 to May 1994 were retrospectively reviewed. There were anterio-lateral MI in 4 cases, inferio-posterial MI in 7, anterial and inferial MI in I, of which triple vessel disease in 4 cases, double vessel disease in 6, single vessel disease in I and left main coronary artery (LM) disease in 1. PTCA was performed under assistance of IABP in 7 cases and of centrifugal pump in 1. Only infarct-related Coronary artery (IRCA) was dilated during acute phase. Direct PTCA was done in 7 cases and rescue PTCA after failure of thrombolytic therapy in 5., Results: PTCA was successful in 11 (91.7%) of the 12 cases, in 1 case with failure of PTCA the IRCA was reperfused by intracoronary thrombolytic therapy. Cardiogenic shock was reverted in 7 (63.6%) of the 11 cases reperfused by PTCA, among whom 6 (54.5%) survived. Four died of irreversible shock after 3 hours-9 days and 1 case with reversed shock died of cardiac rupture after 4 days. During a period of 13-55 months follow-up, long-term survivals were obtained in 4 cases., Conclusions: Emergency PTCA can achieve a high success rate and significantly decrease the mortality rate to less than 50% in Chinese patients with acute MI complicated with cardiogenic shock. The patients tolerate the PTCA procedure very well under the assistance of intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation (IABP) even in very severe condition.

Objective: To find morphological changes of synapses related to the spike discharge by observation on ultrastructures of the EEG spike foci of cerebral cortexes., Material and Methods: The cerebral cortexes were obtained surgically from the EEG spike (recorded by flaky silver electrodes on the surface of cortexes) foci and nonspike areas within the limits of the brain tissue that would be removed in 20 cases of human epilepsy, and were processed for transmission electron microscopic (TEM) observation., Results: In the spike foci, presynaptic terminals of axospinal asymmetric synapses were obviously swollen but postsynaptic spines were relatively unaffected. In these synapses, the synaptic vesicles remarkably decreased in number and accumulated predominantly at the presynaptic membranes or aggregated. Similar changes were observed in the presynaptic terminals of the axospinal asymmetric synapses in the nonspike areas but were of milder degree than in the spike foci., Conclusion: Axospinal asymmetric synapses may release a large quantity of excitatory neurotransmitters, which may result in epileptic abnormal electric activities during seizure.

Objective: Craniopharyngiomas is a kind of intractable tumor in neurosurgery. Since the radical excision is very difficult and occasionally hazardous because of its deep location and close neighbouring to critical cerebral structures, it is necessary to look for a simple and effective method., Patients and Methods: Stereotactic intratumour irradiation with instillation of nuclide colloid was performed in 220 patients with craniopharyngiomas (altogether 265 times), of whom, 130 were male and 90 female. Their ages ranged from 5 to 69 years. The syndromes of optic path's impairment were present in all of the patients. CT or MRI scan showed cystic tumour in 125 patients, solid and cystic in 80 and solid in 15. No severe complications and death were related to the operation., Results: 150 patients were followed up for 2 months to 7 years (average 3.5 years). Tumours disappeared in 92 patients (61.4%), decreased dramatically in 20 (13.4%), decreased less than 50% in 19 (12.6%), and increased in 15 (10%); and there were 4 deaths (2.6%)., Conclusions: Stereotactic intratumour irradiation with instillation of nuclide colloid is effective in the patients with craniopharyngiomas. Beta-emitting isotopes (P-32 and Y-90) are the preferred internal radiation source because of their limited penetration of the energy released and the greater ease of handling. A calculated dose of 20 000 rads to the cyst wall is recommended.

The clinical radiologic manifestations of 8 patients with osteopetrosis (4 males and 4 females) are analyzed. Six of the cases are benign. The pathologic basis for the radiologic manifestations is discussed, and a classification is suggested. "Broom-like" metaphyses, metaphyses containing three or four dense layers of bone, and ossification of soft tissues around joints were found and differential diagnosis was made.

The long-term results of total meniscectomy in 60 patients were reviewed. The patients were followed up to 10 to 33 years. 58.3% of the patients had excellent or good results. Statistical analysis showed that the late results were related to the time of follow-up and not associated with the duration of disease before operation. Radiological degeneration of the knee was seen in 35 patients (87.5%), whereas no relationship of the degeneration to the clinical results was found. It is indicated that the menisci are so important in biomechanics that total meniscectomy should be avoided as far as possible.

The effect of sublingual administration and intravenous drip of nitroglycerin (SLNTG and IVNTG) on left ventricular volumes (LVVs) were studied and systolic function was quantitatively assessed with two-dimensional echocardiography (2DE) in 28 patients with myocardial infarction (MI), including 13 cases without heart failure (MI-NHF) in one group and 15 with heart failure (MI-HF) in another. The results showed that after SLNTG and IVNTG in both groups the heart rate (HR) increased significantly (P < 0.05-0.001); the systolic blood pressure (SBP) decreased significantly (P < 0.05-0.001); the diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was not significantly changed (all P > 0.05); the left ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic volumes (EDV and ESV) both significantly reduced [EDV: decreased by 5.8-11.6% (-13.2-19.0 ml), P < 0.05-0.001; ESV: decreased by 9.6-16.6% (-8.6-17.3 ml), P < 0.05-0.001)]; the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) all significantly elevated (increased by 6.6%-9.4% (3.2%-3.4%), P < 0.05-0.001] except in MI-NHF group after IVNTG; the segmental EF of normal and hypokinetic segments also significantly increased (P < 0.05-0.001). The results suggest that NTG could beneficially reduce left ventricular EDV and ESV; and improve or strengthen its global and segmental systolic function in MI patients, particularly noticeable in patients with heart failure.

The effect of verapamil (Ver) on CVB3 murine myocarditis was investigated. It was found that Ver could aggravate the myocardial inflammation, increase the viral replication in myocardium, and raise mortality in mice with viral myocarditis when the drug was injected within the first 6 days after the CVB3 inoculation.

It is sometimes very difficult to extract a huge impacted stone through the T-tube fistulous tract by conventional techniques with choledochoscope. To simplify the procedure, a lithotriptor PSW-G type using plasma shock wave to disintegrate the stone was designed. The efficacy to fragmentate stone was investigated both in vitro and in vivo. Stones can be shattered into pieces less than 3 mm in diameter in about 30 times of spark with lower energy ranging from 1.7-3.4 kV and 1-3 J. Animal experiments were carried out to prove the safety of the lithotriptor. There was neither interference with the cardiovascular and respiratory systems nor obvious damage to the adjacent tissue where plasma shock wave applied to break stones. Six patients with retained calculi impacted both in extra- and intra-hepatic duct were successfully treated by plasma shock wave lithotripsy. It appears very useful in dealing with a huge impacted stone in the biliary tract.
