It is widely believed that vitamin D( VD) is a positive regulator in the skeletal system. Recently,with the increase of osteoporosis and vitamin D deficiency,more and more national and international studies have found that there is an inconsistency between bone mineral density( BMD) and VD. Studies have also confirmed that high level of vitamin D does not play a positive role in increasing BMD and reducing fracture risk,and the debate about optimal level of VD and how to supplement it in the treatment of osteoporosis have been continued. The paper reviews recent research result,and further explores optimal level of VD and the effects of high level of supplements on BMD and fracture. It is suggested that the target concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D[25( OH) D) ]is 20 ng/mL( 50 nmol/L) and the daily supplement dose of VD is 400-800 IU. Higher dose is unnecessary and may be potentially dangerous. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
