The application of additive manufacturing technology is one of the main approaches to achieving the rapid casting. Additive manufacturing technology can directly prepare casting molds (cores) with no need of patterns, and quickly cast complex castings. The combination of additive manufacturing and traditional casting technology can break the constraint of traditional casting technology, improve casting flexibility, and ameliorate the working environment. Besides, additive manufacturing promotes the realization of "free casting", greatly simplifying the processing procedures and shortening the manufacturing cycle. This paper summarizes the basic principle of additive manufacturing technology and its development situation domestically and overseas, mainly focusing on the development status of several main additive manufacturing technologies applicable to the foundry field, including three-dimensional printing, selective laser sintering, stereolithography, layered extrusion forming, etc. Finally, the future development trend of additive manufacturing technology in the foundry field is prospected. Based on the practical experience of establishing three art casting laboratories in three different colleges of Guangdong, this paper focuses on the development of contemporary art casting's education. By analyzing the reason for the shortage of professionals nowadays and the characteristics of modern foundry industry in the Pearl River Delta, the authors try to find out what kind of knowledge structures a modern foundry industry professional should have. Then, from the viewpoint of education, the authors introduce how to combine the art casting laboratory and the creative art casting course as a new teaching pattern, on the one hand, to attract more students to study casting technology, on the other hand, to train them to be qualified professionals for the modern foundry industry. The article focuses on the visit of president Huang Weidong of Foundry Institution of Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (FICMES) in Shenyang, China, and conducted a work seminar with the FICMES staff. It highlights the presentations during the seminar which includes the accomplishments of FICMES, the publishing and editing process for the journal "China Foundry," and the future development of FICMES. It says that Huang Weidong appreciates the advanced titanium alloy casting technologies.

There is a long history of studying and making use of ductile cast iron in China. Over the years, the foundrymen in China have carried out a lot of valuable research and development work for measuring parameters and controlling the quality in ductile cast iron production. Many methods, such as rapid metallographic phase, thermal analysis, eutectic expansion ratio, surface tension measurement, melt electrical resistivity, oxygen and sulfur activity measurement, ultrasonic measurement and sound frequency measurement, have been used and have played important roles in Chinese casting production in the past. These methods can be generally classified as liquid testing and solid testing according to the sample state. Based on the analysis of the present situation of these methods applied in the Chinese metal casting industry, the authors consider that there are two difficult technical problems to be currently solved in monitoring ductile iron quality. One is to seek an effective method for quickly evaluating the nodularizing result through on-the-spot sample analysis before the liquid iron is poured into the mould. Faw Foundry Co. has initiated a nonferrous alloy casting project worth 872 million yuan in Chengdu city.

Information on the awarding ceremony for the third Yeong Guan Cup Casting Process Design Competition for Chinese University Students held in the Taiyuan University of Science and Technology (TUST) in Taiyuan, Shanxi Sheng on June 2, 2012 is presented. The speakers included chief executive officer Cai Shugen at Yongguan Energy Technology Group and professor Li Zhiqin. The topics included theories and practice of casting design and process.
