The article presents a study which examines whether CD40 ligation contributed to outcomes in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). OSAS is associated with an increased prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and also with cerebrovascular morbidity and mortality. The risk factors of atherosclerosis and vascular diseases are improved by therapy using nasal continuous positive airway pressure. CD40 ligand was originally identified in T-lymphocytes, and it plays an important role in the immune response by binding to its receptor CD40 on B-cells. CD40 plays a pivotal role in the various stages of atherosclerosis. The present study demonstrated higher serum in OSAS patients than in control patients.
