Abstract

The article looks at a meta-analysis of the patient cohort of the Lung Injury Prediction Score (LIPS) study to identify the characteristics of patients hospitalized following pulmonary aspiration, recognized to be a major cause of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). It reports that aspiration was associated with older age, admission from a nursing home low Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score, and a history of alcohol abuse. Aspiration patients were also twice as likely to die in-hospital.
