The rapidly growing interest for new heterogeneous catalytic systems providing high atomic efficiency along with high stability and reactivity triggered an impressive progress in the field of single-atom catalysis. Nevertheless, unravelling the factors governing the interaction strength between the support and the adsorbed metal atoms remains a major challenge. Based on periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations, this paper provides insight into the adsorption of single late transition metals on a defect-free anatase surface. The obtained adsorption energies fluctuate, with the exception of Pd, between -3.11 and -3.80 eV and are indicative of a strong interaction. Depending on the considered transition metal, we could attribute the strength of this interaction with the support to i) an electron transfer towards anatase (Ru, Rh, Ni), ii) s-d orbital hybridisation effects (Pt), or iii) a synergistic effect between both factors (Fe, Co, Os, Ir). The driving forces behind the adsorption were also found to be strongly related to Klechkowsky's rule for orbital filling. In contrast, the deviating behaviour of Pd is most likely associated with the lower dissociation enthalpy of the Pd-O bond. Additionally, the reactivity of these systems was evaluated using the Fermi weighted density of states approach. The resulting softness values can be clearly related to the electron configuration of the catalytic systems as well as with the net charge on the transition metal. Finally, these indices were used to construct a model that predicts the adsorption strength of CO on these anatase-supported d-metal atoms. The dissociation of environmentally hazardous NO through dissociative adsorption on metallic clusters supported by oxides, is receiving growing attention. Building on previous research on monometallic M 13 clusters [The Journal of Physical Chemistry C 2019, 123 (33), 20314-20318], this work considers bimetallic Pt 12 M (M=Rh, Ru or Ir) clusters. The adsorption energy and activation energy of NO dissociation on the clusters have been calculated in vacuum using Kohn-Sham DFT, while their trends were rationalized using reactivity indices such as molecular electrostatic potential and global Fermi softness. The results show that doping of the Pt clusters lowered the adsorption energy as well as the activation energy for NO dissociation. Furthermore, reactivity indices were calculated as a first estimate of the performance of the clusters in realistic amorphous silica pores (MCM-41) through ab initio molecular dynamics simulations., (© 2022 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

In this work, electrical currents through nanographenes, a class of alternant hydrocarbons also known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, in molecular junctions under small bias are explored. We illustrate that when the π-current dominates, that is, when no quantum interference takes place, the current prefers the direction of the shortest bond (the bond with the highest double bond character) upon entering the molecule from the contacts. As such, the idea of electrons propagating through double bonds from contact to contact, originating from the curly arrow drawings used in a previously established selection rule for transmission, seems to be more deeply rooted in the actual physical process of electron transport than previously anticipated. Furthermore, this work confirms that the σ-current behaves completely differently than the π-current. When this type of current becomes important, that is, when quantum interference takes place, the current generally prefers the shortest path from contact to contact, irrespective of the length of the bonds constituting this path, in accordance with the strong distance dependency of the σ-current. Finally, it is demonstrated that keto groups (and cross-conjugating groups in general) can be used to seal off parts of the molecule for the current. There is an increasing interest in applying quantum chemistry to rationally design novel compounds with some desired characteristics. Furthermore, many applications require more than one property to be optimal. In this Concept, several inverse design strategies, based on the discrete best first search scheme, are introduced that allow for the simultaneous optimization of multiple properties or the optimization of the most vital target property with constraints for secondary properties. A detailed assessment of the different optimization techniques is carried out, and special attention is paid to improve the cost efficacy and performance by tuning the process parameters. The reactivity of dicoordinated Sn(0) compounds, stannylones, is probed using density functional theory (DFT)-based reactivity indices and compared with the reactivity of dicoordinated Sn(II) compounds, stannylenes. For the former compounds, the influence of different types of electron-donating ligands, such as cyclic and acyclic carbenes, stannylenes and phosphines, on the reactivity of the central Sn atom is analyzed in detail. Sn(0) compounds are found to be relatively soft systems with a high nucleophilicity, and the plots of the Fukui function f(-) for an electrophilic attack consistently predict the highest reactivity on the Sn atom. Next, complexes of dicoordinated Sn compounds with different Lewis acids of variable hardness are computed. In a first part, the double-base character of stannylones is demonstrated in interactions with the hardest Lewis acid H(+). Both the first and second proton affinities (PAs) are high and are well correlated with the atomic charge on the Sn atom, probing its local hardness. These observations are also in line with electrostatic potential plots that demonstrate that the tin atom in Sn(0) compounds bears a higher negative charge in comparison to Sn(II) compounds. Stannylones and stannylenes can be distinguished from each other by the partial charges at Sn and by various reactivity indices. It also becomes clear that there is a smooth transition between the two classes of compounds. We furthermore demonstrate both from DFT-based reactivity indices and from energy decomposition analysis, combined with natural orbitals for chemical valence (EDA-NOCV), that the monocomplexed stannylones are still nucleophilic and as reactive towards a second Lewis acid as towards the first one. The dominating interaction is a strong σ-type interaction from the Sn atom towards the Lewis acid. The oxidation of methanol on supported molybdenum oxides was studied using DFT. Starting from a cluster model for a mono-oxo and di-oxo molybdenum oxide on a SiO(2) support, the reaction energies and rates for the oxidation of methanol were computed and interpreted with chemical reaction indices. This pointed out that the apparent barrier was significantly lower on the mono-oxide model, favoring it over the di-oxo species. Accordingly, we assumed similar behavior on Al(2)O(3), TiO(2) and ZrO(2) supports, so that we could compare characteristics over different supports. We present a validation of computationally efficient density functional-based methods for the reproduction of relative bond dissociation energies of large polyaromatic hydrocarbons. Through the calculation of intrinsic radical stabilities and the computation of spin densities, the extent of delocalization of the unpaired electron in the benzylic radicals is examined. We focus on the influence of the level of theory choice applied for the geometry optimization and the role of van der Waals corrections on thermochemical properties. The dispersion effects mainly influence the energetics, causing a small upward shift of the bond dissociation energies. The long-range corrected CAM-B3LYP functional does not improve the traditional B3LYP results for the geometry description of the large delocalized radicals, however a non-negligible influence was encountered when applied for the energetics. It is reported that the f polarization functions present in the 6-311+G(3df,2p) basis set lead to an erroneous trend when combined with the B2PLYP functional for the computation of the single point energies.

The spectrochemical and nephelauxetic series are analyzed within the context of spin-polarized conceptual DFT. For a series of different [RuL(6)](x) complexes, the local spin-philicity omega(S,Metal)+ condensed on the metal ion shows a remarkable analogy with some semi-empirical scales of the spectrochemical series. The local f(SS,Metal)+ Fukui function in turn can be linked to the nephelauxetic effect. Herein, we present a non-empirical, unified approach for a quantitative discussion of both series.

A Hirshfeld decomposition scheme of the Hartree-Fock total molecular energy into atomic energies is presented. The calculations are performed by direct numerical integration and the results are compared for a set of 28 molecules containing different kinds of atoms. The calculated atomic energies show a strong dependency on changes of atomic electron population and hybridization. Linear correlations are found between the energy and the population for H, these being related to the electronegativity of this atom and to the external potential created by the remaining atoms. The proposed energy partitioning scheme appears to be useful for studies such as proton acidity, the anomeric effect and group transferability, and allows atomic virial ratios to be obtained. Finally, the atomic potential energies are found to mimic trends based on exact expressions as well as trends displayed by molecular quantities, thus lending credibility to the partitioning scheme used.
