A national and comprehensive evaluation is lacking on the relationship between short-term exposure to submicron particulate matter (PMData was obtained from 29,553 asthma deaths from the China National Mortality Surveillance System from 2015 to 2020. We used a bilinear interpolation approach to estimate each participant's daily ambient particulate matter pollution and meteorological variables exposure based on their geocoded residential address and a 10 km × 10 km grid from China High Air Pollutants and the fifth generation of European ReAnalysis-Land reanalysis data set. The associations were estimated using a time-stratified case-crossover design and conditional logistic regressions.Our results revealed significant associations between short-term exposure to various particulate matter and asthma mortality. The 5-day moving average of particulate matter exposure produced the most pronounced effect. Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are widely-utilized synthetic chemicals commonly found in industrial and consumer products. Previous studies have examined associations between PFASs and renal function, yet the results are mixed. Moreover, evidence on the associations of isomers of PFASs with renal function in population from high polluted areas is scant. To help to address this data gap, we used high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry to measure serum isomers of perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), and other PFASs from 1612 adults residing in Shenyang, China, and characterized their associations with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Results showed that after adjusted for multiple confounding factors, most of the higher fluorinated PFASs, except for PFOA and PFDA, were negatively associated with eGFR and positively associated with CKD. Compared with linear PFOS (n-PFOS), branched PFOS isomers (Br-PFOS) were more strongly associated with eGFR (Br-PFOS; β = −1.22, 95%CI: 2.02, −0.42; p = 0.003 vs. n-PFOS; β = −0.16, 95%CI: 0.98, 0.65; p = 0.691) and CKD (Br-PFOS; OR = 1.27; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.58; p = 0.037 vs. n-PFOS; OR = 0.98; 95% CI: 0.80, 1.20; p = 0.834). In conclusion, branched PFOS isomers were negatively associated with renal function whereas their linear counterparts were not. Given widespread exposure to PFASs, potential nephrotoxic effects are of great public health concern, Furthermore, longitudinal research on the potential nephrotoxic effects of PFASs isomers will be necessary to more definitively assess the risk.

It has been reported that exposure to perfluorooctane sulfonates (PFOS) causes behavioral abnormalities in zebrafish larvae, but the possible mechanisms underlying these changes remain unexplored. In this study, zebrafish embryos (2 h postfertilization, 2-hpf) were exposed to PFOS at different concentrations (0, 0.032, 0.32 and 3.2 mg/L) for 120 h. Developmental endpoints and the locomotion behavior of larvae were evaluated. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, dopamine contents, several genes and proteins related to neurodevelopment and dopamine signaling were examined. Our results indicate that increased ROS levels in the zebrafish larvae heads may be causally associated with neurodevelopment damage. Meanwhile, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and alpha1-Tubulin (α1-Tubulin) protein contents were significantly increased, which may be a compensatory mechanism for the impaired central nervous system. PFOS-induced locomotor hyperactivity was observed in the first light phase and dark phase at the 0.32 and 3.2 mg/L of PFOS. Upregulation of dopamine-related genes tyrosine hydroxylase (th) and dopamine transporter (dat) associated with increased dopamine contents in the 3.2 mg/L of PFOS. In addition, protein expression of TH and DAT were noted at the 0.32 and 3.2 mg/L of PFOS concentrations. Our results suggested that PFOS induces neurobehavioral changes in zebrafish larvae, possibly by perturbing a dopamine signaling pathway. In addition, PFOS induced development damage, such as increased malformation rate and shorter body length.

Purpose Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a class of manmade chemicals commonly used in consumer product manufacturing. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) are two of the most highly studied PFASs. Both are present in the blood of the most Americans. PFASs are associated with intermediate cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes, but their relationship with obesity, a risk factor for intermediate and advanced CVD, remains largely unconfirmed. In this context, we aimed to explore the relationship between PFASs and both overweight/obesity and abdominal obesity among children. Methods We examine associations between PFOA and PFOS levels, and Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) in a representative sample (N = 2473) of US children, aged 12–18 years from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999–2012. Overweight/obesity is defined as age-, sex-specific BMI z-score ≥ 85th percentile; abdominal obesity is defined as age-, sex-specific waist circumference ≥90th percentile. Results Associations between PFASs and anthropometric outcomes show a dose-response relationship overall. For overweight/obese BMI z-score, findings indicate OR = 1.42 and 95% CI: 0.85–2.38 for quartile 2 of PFOA exposure; OR = 2.22 (95% CI: 1.20–4.13) for quartile 3 of PFOA exposure; and OR = 2.73 (95% CI:1.10–6.74) for quartile 4 of PFOA exposure. Discussion Findings indicate an association between elevated PFOA and overweight/obesity among children after multivariable adjustment.

Exposure to chromium is increasing due to environmental pollution from industrial processes. Several epidemiological studies have investigated chromium exposure and reproductive outcomes, but few studies have investigated the association of chromium exposure and low birth weight (LBW). This study was designed to investigate whether maternal exposure to chromium during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of LBW. Chromium concentrations in maternal urine samples collected at delivery were measured in 204 LBW cases and 612 matched controls recruited between 2012 and 2014 in Hubei Province, China. Risk of LBW was associated with higher levels of chromium in maternal urine [adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 1.77 for the medium tertile, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.95, 3.29; adjusted OR = 2.48 for the highest tertile, 95% CI: 1.33, 4.61; P trend = 0.01]. The association was more pronounced among female infants (adjusted OR = 3.67 for the highest tertile, 95% CI: 1.50, 8.97) than among male infants (adjusted OR = 1.22 for the highest tertile, 95% CI = 0.48, 3.11) (p heterogeneity = 0.06). Our findings suggest that maternal exposure to higher levels of chromium during pregnancy may potentially increase the risk of delivering LBW infants, particularly for female infants.
