The influence of compost on the bioaccessibility, bioavailability and ecotoxicity of pentachlorophenol (PCP) as a function of time was studied by means of different chemical and ecotoxicological methods. Experiments were conducted in both sterile and non-sterile microcosms and samplings carried out at 20, 60 and 120 d from initial contamination. PCP bioaccessibility, assessed by means of Porapak resin extraction, was around 75% of the applied dose with no aging or compost effects. Two different methods were applied to assess the bioavailability of PCP, respectively, to bacteria and earthworms and linked to ecotoxicological assays (biosensor and earthworm coelomocytes assays). Water extraction was applied to assess the bioavailability to bacteria: results showed that this fraction was always below 50%, with significant decreases as a result of aging processes and compost addition. In non-sterile microcosms, compost amendment increased the amount of PCP biodegraded, while the ecotoxicological assay with the biosensor Pseudomonas fluorescens pUCD607 indicated a higher toxicity in the most degraded samples, thus suggesting the formation of more toxic metabolites. Earthworm body accumulation results were rather in accordance with water extractions data, with decreasing bioavailable amounts as a result of time and compost addition. No compost or aging effects were instead detected by coelomocytes assay. Results indicate how different methods must be applied altogether to assess the bioavailability and ecotoxicity of xenobiotics such as PCP in soil. The addition of compost was also proven as an effective strategy for the remediation of PCP contaminated soils, although issues related to the possible formation of toxic metabolites must be taken into account.

Bioavailability in soil of organic xenobiotics such as phenanthrene is limited by mechanisms of diffusion of the xenobiotics within soil micropores and organic matter. The agricultural utilization of compost may reduce the risk connected to organic xenobiotic contamination by means of: (i) a reduction of the bioavailable fraction through an increased adsorption and (ii) an enhanced degradation of the remaining bioavailable fraction through an inoculum of degrading microorganisms. Aim of this work is to test this hypothesis by assessing the effects of compost amendment on the bioavailability and degradation of phenanthrene in soil. Experiments were carried out in both sterilized and non-sterilized conditions, and chemical and microbiological analyses were carried out in order to determine the extent of degradation and bioavailability and to monitor the evolution of the soil micro flora in time. Bioavailability was assessed in sterilized microcosms, in order to assess the physical effects of compost on aging processes without the influence of microbial degradation. Results showed that bioavailability is significantly reduced in soils amended with compost, although no differences were found at the 2 doses of compost studied. In non-sterilized soils the amount of phenanthrene degraded was always higher in the amended soils than in the non-amended one. Microbiological analyses confirmed the presence of a higher number of phenanthrene degraders in the amended soils and in samples of compost alone. These results suggest that compost induces the degradation in soils of easily degradable compounds such as phenanthrene, when the proper bacteria are in the compost; more resistant xenobiotics may instead be trapped by the compost organic matter, thus becoming less available.

Pesticide application to rice paddies may affect the quality of environmental resources such as groundwater and surface water. The distribution of residues of tricyclazole, an environmentally persistent fungicide used widely in Italy, was monitored in the network of surface water bodies surrounding the main rice production area in Italy. The location of monitoring sites was based on the potential risk for contamination with tricyclazole. This was determined as a function of the area of rice grown, the geographical distribution of rice crops susceptible to the pest, and sales of tricyclazole. Monitoring sites were also located to represent different spatial scales (farm, catchment and basin). For water samples taken shortly after application in July and August, the highest concentrations of tricyclazole were measured at the farm sites. However, residues were also detected at the catchment and basin scale. The 95% of the measured residue levels was below 9.80, 1.20 and 1.15 microg l(-1), at the farm, catchment and basin scales, respectively. In sediment, tricyclazole residues were detected in 12 out 176 samples collected with the 95% of the measured residue levels below the concentration of 0.03 mg kg(-1). Residues were sporadically detected in samples taken after the crop was harvested in November and December. Variables such as the scale of sampling, the season and the year, were significant in determining pesticide residue distribution. The type of water body was less significant.

In the current EU risk assessment for pesticide registration, the European Community requires prediction of the concentration of each pesticide in air. A number of mathematical models are used to assess the fate of pesticides in groundwater, surface water and soil. PELMO 3.20 calculates the volatilization fluxes from bare soil and was improved in the new version PELMO 3.31 to include the effect of temperature and sorption in dry soil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the new version of PELMO 3.31 in predicting the pesticide volatilization under field conditions. Procymidone, malathion, and ethoprophos were the test compounds in two different seasons (autumn and winter). Comparing simulation results obtained with PELMO 3.31, after calibration, with the previous version PELMO 3.20 shows that the estimated volatilization results seems improved for malathion, similar or slightly overestimating in the warmer season for ethoprophos, and similar or slightly underestimating in the colder season for procymidone. The new release of PELMO allows a more accurate estimation of pesticides volatilization from soil as function of meteorological factors, especially for medium or low volatility pesticides. Some difficulties remain, such as the determination of the active air layer and the sorption increment with the soil drying.

This work has been carried out to verify the predictions of Mackay's and Jury's models. The experimental results agree well with the predictions of the models and show that propanil is not a hazard to the groundwater. Actually the maximum amount of residue detected in surface water is 0.37 μg/L, whereas the Mackay model predicts 0.45 μg/L and Jury's 48.3 μg/L.

We determined the organic carbon released by roots of maize plants (Zea mays L.) when grown in soils amended with compost and its soluble fractions. In rhizobox systems, soil and roots are separated from the soil of a lower compartment by a nylon membrane. Treatments are applied to the upper compartment, while in the lower compartment luminescent biosensors measure the bioavailable organic carbon released by roots (rhizodeposition). The rhizobox-plants systems were amended with a compost (COM), its water extract (TEA), the hydrophobic (HoDOM) and hydrophilic (HiDOM) fractions of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) extracted from the compost. After root development, the lower untreated compartments were sampled and sliced into thin layers. The bioavailable organic carbon in each layer was assessed with the lux-marked biosensor Pseudomonas fluorescens 10586 pUCD607, and compared with total organic carbon (TOC) analyses. The TOC values ranged between 8.4 and 9.6 g kg(-1) and did not show any significant differences between bulk and rhizosphere soil samples in any treatment. Conversely, the biosensor detected significant differences in available C compounds for rhizosphere soils amended with various organic materials. Concentrations of available organic compounds in the first 2 mm of soil rhizosphere were 1.69 (control), 1.09 (COM), 2.87 (HiDOM), 4.73 (HoDOM) and 2.14 (TEA)micromol Cg(-1) soil g(-1) roots. The applied rhizobox-biosensor integrated method was successful in detecting and quantifying effects of organic amendments on organic carbon released by maize plant roots. This approach may become important in assessing the carbon cycle in agricultural soils and soil-atmosphere compartments.

Phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis has gained great importance in the study of soil microbial community structure. This structure can give indication of the soil status. Purpose of the present paper is to analyse PLFA patterns in altered agricultural soils in order to develop a soil status alteration index. Soils subjected either to intensive agricultural exploitation, or to overflow by municipal and industrial wastes, or to irrigation with saline waters were analysed for PLFA content and compared to adjacent untreated soils by means of different statistical techniques. Principal component analysis separated PLFAs in three groups: unsaturated PLFAs (first axis, 48% of total variance), monounsaturated and cyclopropane PLFAs (second axis, 28% of total variance) and polyunsaturated PLFAs (third axis, 24% of total variance). By means of canonical discriminant analysis, a soil alteration index (SAI) was produced from 15 PLFAs using two data sets. A third data set was used to test the SAI general validity together with other data sets reported in literature. The index validity was confirmed in most cases: SAI gave higher scores for control soils and was generally able to classify soils according to their reported degree of alteration.

Owing to the lipophilic character of some components of cork and the long periods in the open air (during growth and barks storage), there is a risk of the cork becoming environmentally polluted. Moreover, cork stoppers are in contact with wines for periods ranging from a few months to several years; so they must maintain high levels of hygiene. The present work aims to investigate the level of PCBs, organochlorine pesticides, and PAHs in cork from different countries, used for the manufacturing of one-piece wine stoppers. Samples of cork were analysed using a multi-residue method. PCBs were not detected in all the samples; only a few samples contained detectable amounts of DDE; phenanthrene and anthracene were found in all the samples and fluoranthene in fewer cases. It was not possible to find a significant correlation between POPs concentration and origin of cork. Globally, the detected amounts are consistent with values found in foods, so the investigated cork show a suitable hygienic quality.

A potential method for cleaning water from point-source pollution by organic compounds is using biological reactors. In this study, four reactors were tested for their ability to retain and degrade pesticides. The pesticides tested were the insecticide chlorpyrifos, the fungicide metalaxyl and the herbicide imazamox. The reactors were filled with differing mixtures of vine-branch, citrus peel, urban waste and public green compost. The reactor volume was 188 l. Forced circulation of the contaminated solution was programmed to decontaminate the solution. Both retention and degradation of the compounds by the reactors was studied. Chlorpyrifos was the best retained, due to its physico-chemical characteristics, while only one substrate effectively retained metalaxyl and imazamox (citrus peel + urban waste compost). Degradation of the pesticides in the reactors was faster than published values for degradation in soil. The half-life of all pesticides in the reactors was less than 14 days, compared to literature values of 60–70 days in soil. The combined retention and fast degradation make the biofilter a feasible technique to reduce spill-related and point environmental contamination by pesticides. The technique is most effective against persistent pesticides, while for mobile pesticides, the efficiency can be improved with several passages of the contaminated solution through biofilters.
