Cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) generally exhibit mutually beneficial co-sorption behavior on iron oxyhydroxides through multiple mechanisms, including surface precipitation, ternary surface complexes, and electrostatic interactions. However, the numerous factors that control the immobilization of Cd and As in turn complicated the processes and mechanisms involved in their co-desorption from iron minerals, which hindered the full understanding of their geochemical behaviors. Here, the simultaneous release of Cd(II) and As(V) from newly precipitated ferrihydrite nanoparticles by either Ca or P was investigated through kinetics and isothermal desorption experiments. We showed that the Cd(II) and As(V) present two-phase desorption processes (rapid desorption and slow desorption) in both binary (Fe-Cd or Fe-As alone) and ternary systems (Fe-Cd-As co-presence). Compared to their binary counterparts, Cd(II) and As(V) in the ternary systems are more prone to detachment from ferrihydrite. Further desorption of Cd(II) and As(V) at different co-presence scenarios (different initial concentrations) demonstrated mutual promotion behaviour towards their counterparts; the co-presence of Cd(II) facilitates the desorption of As(V), while the co-presence of As(V) also promotes the desorption of Cd(II). XPS and FTIR results demonstrated that either Ca or P showed minor effects on the binding environment of Cd and As. Further results from the in-situ ATR-FTIR experiment and second derivative peak fitting analysis indicate that the enhanced detachment of Cd(II) and As(V) from the ternary system may be due to the synergistic desorption of the ternary surface complexes and other surface complex species. Our results provide new insights into the prediction of the environmental behaviour of the coexistence of Cd(II) and As(V) in iron-rich geological settings. Biochar (BC) has a strong potential for activating arsenic (As) in soil; thus, the phytoremediation efficiency of As-polluted soils is enhanced with Pteris vittata L. A pot experiment was conducted to investigate the potential of BC to assist in phytoremediation with P. vittata. The effects of BC on physicochemical properties, available As, enzyme activities, and the bacterial community in the rhizosphere soil were investigated, and the biomass, physiology, and As uptake of P. vittata were analyzed. The results indicated that applying BC facilitated available As in the P. vittata rhizosphere soil, and the phytoremediation efficiency percentage increased in the As-polluted soils, such as 3.80% and 8.01% under the 2% and 5% BC treatments compared to the control, respectively. Phytoremediation with P. vittata and BC significantly improved soil organic matter content, available N, P, and K, enzyme activities, and the bacterial community. BC promoted Streptomyces (26.6-54.2%) and Sphingomonas (12.3-30.8%) abundance which regulated the growth and As uptake by P. vittata. Moreover, applying BC increased the biomass, and As uptake by P. vittata. Identifying driving factors is of great significance for understanding the mechanisms of soil pollution. In this study, a data processing method for driving factors was analyzed to explore the genesis of Arsenic (As) pollution in mining areas. The wind field that affects the atmospheric diffusion of pollutants was simulated using the standard k-ε model. Machine learning and GeoDetector methods were used to identify the primary driving factors. The results showed that the prediction performances of the three machine learning models were improved after data processing. The R 2 values of random forest (RF), support vector machine, and artificial neural network increased from 0.45, 0.69, and 0.24 to 0.55, 0.76, and 0.52, respectively. The importance of wind increased from 20.85% to 26.22%. The importance of distance to the smelter plant decreased from 43.26% to 33.19% in the RF model. The wind's driving force (q value) increased from 0.057 to 0.235 in GeoDetector. The average value of historical atmospheric dust reached 534.98 mg/kg, indicating that atmospheric deposition was an important pathway for As pollution. Applying beneficial bacteria in rice rhizosphere to manage heavy metal behaviour in soil-plant system is a promising strategy. However, colonization/domination of exogenous bacteria in rhizosphere soils remains a challenge. In this study, a bacterium Ochrobactrum anthropi, which showed the potential of transforming soluble Sb III into Sb 2 O 3 mineral, was repeatedly inoculated into the rice rhizosphere weekly throughout the rice growth period, and the colonization of this bacterium in rice rhizosphere soils and its effect on Sb accumulation in rice plants were investigated. Results showed that repeated inoculants changed the native bacterial community in rhizosphere soils in comparison with the control, but the inoculated O. anthropi was not identified as an abundant species. With weekly inoculation, the decrease in Sb in rice roots and straws was maintained throughout the rice growth period, with decrease percentages ranging from 36 to 49% and 33-35%. In addition, decrease percentages of Sb in husks and grains at the maturing stage obtained 34 and 37%, respectively. Furthermore, the XRD identified the formation of valentinite (Sb 2 O 3 ) on rice root in inoculation treatment, and the decrease percentages in aqueous Sb III in rhizosphere were 53-100% through the growth period. It demonstrated that weekly inoculants performed their temporary activity of valentinite formation, and reduced Sb accumulation in rice plants efficiently. Fe/N-doped carbon magnetic nanocubes (Fe/N-C MNCs) were feasibly fabricated through in situ thermal transformations of Prussian blue nanocubes (PB NCs) in an inert atmosphere, and the resultant composite employed as the heterogeneous noble-metal-free catalyst possessed satisfactory catalytic performance in hydrogen peroxide activation. By examining the properties of Fe/N-C MNCs, we demonstrate for the first time that the catalyst could act in synergy with ultrasonic irradiation and accelerate the selectivity of the degradation reaction of dyes. The degradation efficiency of the organic positively charged dye (methylene blue) is significantly increased after ultrasonic irradiation addition, probably owing to charge matching between a positively charged dye and the Fe/N-C MNCs. Interestingly, organic pollution degradation mainly follows a non-radical pathway. Furthermore, singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) is predominantly produced by Fe/N-C MNCs on H 2 O 2 activation, and it is the contributor to catalytic degradation instead of hydroxyl and/or superoxide anion radicals. Moreover, the Fe/N-C MNCs exhibit excellent stability and reusability. Recently, thermal-sensitive polymers absorbed much more concerns, and the goal of present work was to modify magnetic nanoparticles with N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and methyl 3,3-dimethylacrylate (DMMA) for obtaining thermal and magnetic dual-sensitive nanoparticles based on silica coated nanoscale zero valent iron and thermal-sensitive polymers (Fe@p(NIPAM-co-DMMA)). Fe@p(NIPAM-co-DMMA) nanoparticles were fabricated and possessed excellent adsorption ability for Sudan pollutants in aqueous samples. A rapid extraction and separation approach utilizing synthesized dual-sensitive nanomaterials was designed and developed before analysis by liquid chromatography (HPLC). Upon the enrichment factors as their optimal values, the established method gained wonderful linearity over the range of 0.05-500 μg L -1 . The precisions of proposed method were all lower than 3.87%. The validating experiments ensured that this developed method provided with satisfied recoveries in the range of 97.4-102.6% from spiked real water samples, which affirmed that this method was a reliable monitoring tool for Sudan pollutants in water and food samples, etc., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. This study presents a one-step synthetic approach for magnetic biochar (MBC) photo-degradation of diethyl phthalate (DEP). The results showed that MBC exhibited better catalytic property for DEP degradation than BC, and its catalytic performance was influenced by the amount of Fe doping. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), quenching experiments, and chemical probe studies confirmed the presence of persistent free radicals (PFRs), hydroxyl radicals (·OH), and superoxide anion radical (·O 2 - ) in both of BC and MBC. Solar light promoted the formation of PFRs in BC system, which transferred electrons to oxygen to form ·O 2 - , thus yielding ·OH. On the other hand, electron transfer occurred between PFRs and Fe 3+ for MBC, Fe 2+ played an important role in activation of O 2 and ·O 2 - production. Subsequently, photo-Fenton reaction was primarily responsible for ·OH formation. Bioremediation of heavy metal-contaminated soil using metal-resistant microbes is a promising remediation technology. However, as exogenous bacteria sometimes struggle to survive and grow when introduced to new soils, it is important to develop appropriate carriers for microbial populations. In this study, we report a novel approach to remediating Cd-contaminated rice paddy soil using biochar-supported microbial cell composites (BMCs) produced from agricultural waste (cornstalks). Pot experiments showed that amendment with BMC was more efficient at reducing root and grain Cd content than pure bacteria, while improving soil Cd fractionation toward more stabilized and less labile forms. Bacteria in the BMC medium grew more readily with more abundant metabolites than those raised in free cells, probably because biochar provides shelter via porous structures (as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy) as well as additional nutrients. Overall, the improved long-term production of microbial biomass caused by BMC inoculation results in a higher remediation efficiency. Understanding environmental factors driving ecological processes of archaeal communities in heavily contaminated rivers is crucial for improvements in river ecological monitoring and indication. However, succession mechanisms underlying vertical and horizontal archaeal community assemblages in contaminated rivers remains largely unstudied. Here, to investigate ecological processes controlling archaeal community succession in a contaminated urban river, multivariate statistics approaches were applied to fields samples collected from locations representing vertical and horizontal assemblages of archaeal community. Our results revealed that archaeal community in the river showed distinct vertical and horizontal distribution patterns and the differences between water and sediment samples were most significant. Beta-diversity patterns in the vertical and horizontal assemblages are both almost completely caused by species replacement between sampling points (horizontal β SIM  = 0.60 ± 0.09, β NES  = 0.09 ± 0.05; vertical β SIM  = 0.40 ± 0.07, β NES  = 0.10 ± 0.06). Considering phylogenetic turnover deviation, homogenizing dispersal was the most crucial process dominating archaeal community assemblages in water samples while main ecological process in sediment samples was variable selection. Euryarchaeota and Thaumarchaeota were found to prefer high-nutrients and low-nutrients environments, respectively. Analysis of environmental drivers of archaeal phyla distribution and community assemblages indicated that nutrients played a decisive role in driving the sediment archaeal community. Dissolved oxygen (DO) explained the most variation in phylogenetic turnover deviation within all water archaeal community while oxidation reduction potential (ORP) contributed most for horizontal sediment archaeal community assemblages. Present study prepared a new magnetic and thermo dual-responsive core-shell nanomaterial (Fe@SiO 2 @poly(N-isopropylacrymide-co-methacrylic acid, Fe@SiO 2 @PNIPAM-co-MAA), which was characterized by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. The new nanomaterials integrated with the magnetism of nanoscale zero valent iron material and thermo-response of the copolymers, and were utilized to investigate the adsorption capacity for typical phenols such as bisphenol A, phenol and hydroquinone from water samples, and the results showed that the magnetic and thermo dual-responsive core-shell nanomaterial exhibited good adsorption ability to typical phenols. Based on these, a sensitive method was developed for the determination of bisphenol A, phenol and hydroquinone using as-prepared magnetic nanoparticles as the magnetic solid phase extraction sorbent prior to high performance liquid chromatography coupled with variable wavelength detection. Under the optimal conditions, linear linearity was obtained over the range of 0.1-500 μg L -1 with the correlation coefficients (r 2 ) above 0.996. The detection limits of three analytes were in the range of 0.019-0.031 μg L -1 , and the precisions were all less than 4.8% (n = 6). The developed method was evaluated with real water samples and excellent spiked recoveries in the range of 94.0-105.4% were achieved. In order to study the role of mulberry (Moms alba L) as an economic crop for remediation of cadmium (Cd) contaminated soil, the transport of Cd from mulberry to silkworm were investigated. Three varieties of mulberry (Yuesang-11, Nongsang-14, and Qiangsang-1) with three planting densities were cultivated in two heavy metal-contaminated fields named Dongkou in Shaoyang city and Linxiang in Yueyang city in Hunan province respectively. The both field soils were contaminated by heavy metals, especially by Cd. The potential risks of heavy metals in Linxiang's soil were higher than those in Dongkou's because of higher concentrations of Cd. Since the promotion of Cd concentrations in aerial parts (stem, branch and leaf) resulted from the increase of planting density, the method of high planting density is beneficial to improve the efficiency of the remediation of Cd contaminated soil. The percentages of average Cd contents of mulberry in Dongkou accounted for 44%, 20%, 18% and 16% in roots, stems, branches and leaves respectively, while the Cd contents were 38%, 27%, 19% and 16% distributed in roots, stems, branches and leaves respectively. Mulberry leaves from contaminated soils was applied in food source of silkworms in this study. Although there is Cd uptake occurred in silkworm growth and its products (cocoons and chrysalis), Cd contents in cocoons are lower than the national standard (100 μg*kg-1) for textile industry of China. Humic acid (HA) is ubiquitous in the environment, and its effect on the adsorption of pollutants onto biochar (BC) has been widely investigated. However, the catalytic degradation of organic contaminants induced by persistent free radicals (PFRs) in BC is not negligible. In this study, two different source of external HA, dissolved HA and coated HA, was employed to assess the effect of HA on the degradation of organic contaminant ciprofloxacin (CIP) by PFRs in BC. Results showed that relatively low concentration of dissolved HA promoted the removal of CIP from 59.78% (control) to 66.70% (5 mg/L dissolved HA) by BC, but higher concentration of dissolved HA inhibited. By contrast, coated HA altered the characteristics of BC and had negative impact on organics removal. The removal of CIP by BC in the presence of HA did not have a great difference at pH 6-9, and increasing dissolved oxygen promoted CIP degradation. In addition, the contribution of CIP removal led by adsorption was 47.61%, 41.62% and 47.84% respectively for BC, BC + dissolved HA and 1% HA coated BC. Correspondingly, the contribution of CIP removal led by •OH induced from PFRs in BC was respectively 21.88%, 35.58% and 25.11%, and the contribution led by PFRs themselves oxidation was 30.51%, 22.80% and 27.05%, respectively. The calculated contributions of adsorption and degradation to CIP removal demonstrated that the contribution of degradation to CIP removal led by •OH increased, while the contribution led by PFRs themselves oxidation was inhibited in the presence of dissolved and coated HA., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. The mining and smelting of lead-zinc (Pb-Zn) ores cause widespread As contamination. The fractions and colloidal distribution of As associated with Fe oxide minerals in Pb-Zn mine-contaminated soils have not been well understood. In this study, As fractions associated with Fe oxide minerals in Pb-Zn tailings- and smelter-contaminated soils were compared using sequential extraction techniques. Kinetic experiments were conducted to characterize the reactivity of Fe oxide minerals. The distribution of As and Fe oxide minerals in soil colloids were analyzed. The results show that in mining-contaminated soils (both tailings and smelter) the relatively active fraction (amorphous hydrous oxide-bound As, As F3 ) has a strong relationship with easily reducible Fe (Fe ox1 ). In smelter-contaminated soils, relatively stable fractions (crystalline hydrous oxide-bound As, As F4 ) were closely associated with reducible Fe (Fe ox2 ). Although the average proportions of specifically-bound As (As F2 ) and As F3 in contaminated soils were similar, high As release in tailings-contaminated soils was observed because of the high reactivity of Fe oxide minerals in those soils compared with that in smelter-contaminated soils. Some slightly polluted soils with high pH and TOC concentrations formed As-bearing colloidal suspensions. Both humic acid and arsenic (As) have a strong affinity to ferrihydrite colloids (FH C ). However, little is known about effects of humic acid colloid (HA C ) and FH C interaction on transport and deposition of As in porous media. Co-transport of HA C -FH C and As at different pH was systematically investigated by monitoring their breakthrough curves (BTCs) in saturated sand columns. Colloid and solute transport models were used to reveal mechanisms of As transport with HA C -FH C in porous media. Results showed that HA C -FH C regulated As transport. Under neutral pH conditions, As transport was facilitated by FH C loading small chain-shaped HA C , while it was slightly retarded by FH C loading granular HA C . Under alkaline conditions, HA C was chain-shaped and coupled with FH C to facilitate As transport. However, mobile colloid-adsorbed As was less evident due to relatively low adsorption on FH C under alkaline pH in comparison with the transport under neutral pH. The presence of HA C occupied adsorption sites on FH C and thus decreased As adsorption. Arsenic adsorption on mobile FH C decreased with increasing HA C concentration. Therefore, HA C had an antagonistic effect on mixed colloid-facilitated As transport at neutral and alkaline conditions. Arsenic was readily co-deposited with FH C , especially at low pH. This study suggested that morphology and concentration of HA C , mobility of FH C , and solution pH would control As transport in porous media. Co-contamination of arsenic (As) usually occurs with antimony (Sb) in Sb mine ores. However, the mobility and bio-availability of Sb and As in different types of mine impacted soils have received relatively little attention. This study aimed to investigate the fraction, mobility and removal of Sb and As in three types of polluted soils using environmentally friendly and cost-effective extractants. In the present study, lightly polluted (L), moderately polluted (M), and 3) highly polluted (H) soils were collected from the Xikuangshan (XKS) mine area in Hunan, China. Toxicity risk assessment, fraction and extraction of Sb and As were performed to evaluate Sb and As mobility and availability. According to the speciation fractions, the percent of residual Sb was larger than As in all studied soils, which suggested that As is far more mobile than Sb. Sb and As extractabilities from selected polluted soils were compared and ranked as: citric acid > tartaric acid > EDTA > HCl > Na 2 HPO 4  > CaCl 2 . Citric acid showed the highest extractabilities for both Sb and As (up to 24% for total Sb and 41% for total As respectively). Moreover, obvious alteration of Sb and As fractionations in three types of soils were observed after chemical extractions. Microbe-associated aluminum (Al) hydroxides occur naturally in aquatic and geologic environments and they might play a crucial role in the sequestration of trace metals because these composite solids comprise both reactive mineral and organic surface, but how they do it still remains unknown. Here we replicate Al hydroxide organo-mineral composite formation in soil and sediments by synthesising composites using Pseudomonas putida cells, during coprecipitation with Al hydroxide. Morphological and ATR-FTIR analysis show closely attached nano-sized Al hydroxides on the bacterial surface. For composites dominated by either bacteria or Al hydroxide, an enhanced metal adsorption is observed on the composites than on pure Al hydroxide at pH < 6. Cd uptake by the mainly Al mineral composite is approximately additive, i.e., the sum of the end-member metal adsorptivities, whereas that on the mainly bacteria composite is non-additive. This non-additive sorption is not only due to the blockage of surface reactive sorption sites, but more importantly the changes of surface charge when bacteria and Al mineral are interacted. EXAFS results show that Cd is predominately sorbed as a bidentate corner-sharing complex on the amorphous Al hydroxide surface and a carboxyl-binding on the bacterial surface. In the environment, simultaneous presence of arsenic (As) of different oxidation states is common, which hampers our understanding of As behavior. In the current study, the pH dependency of arsenite (As(III)) and arsenate (As(V)) adsorption to goethite under the influence of calcium (Ca 2+ ) (as a major cation) and phosphate (PO 4 3- ) (as a major anion) was studied, and the reliability of the CD-MUSIC model prediction was tested. The results show that the presence of the major ions led in general to a weaker and more complicated pH dependency of As adsorption. Calcium promoted As(V) adsorption especially at high pH, which can reverse the direction of the pH dependency. The presence of Ca 2+ can even decrease As(III) adsorption when As(V) and/or PO 4 3- are present. Phosphate competed strongly with both As(III) and As(V) in their adsorption, especially at intermediate and low pH. In the multi-component system, As(III) adsorbs weaker than As(V) over the environmental relevant pH range, therefore it is often the dominant As species in solution and soluble As(III) concentration generally decreases with increasing pH. In the same pH range, As(V) adsorption shows a complicated pH dependency. Soluble As(V) reaches a minimum around pH 6 at high concentration of major bivalent cations (e.g. Ca 2+ ), whereas soluble As(V) will decrease with pH at low bivalent cation concentrations. The experimental results can be reliably predicted and explained with the CD-MUSIC model. Intercropping of arsenic (As) hyperaccumulator and cash crops during remediation of contaminated soil has been applied in farmland remediation project. However, little is known about the fate of As fractions in the soil profile and As uptake within the intercropping plants under field condition. In this study, As removal, uptake, and translocation were investigated within an intercropping system of Pteris vittata L. (P. vittata) and maize (Zea mays). Results indicated that the concentration of As associated with amorphous Fe (hydr)oxides in the 10-20 cm soil layer was significantly lower under malposed intercropping of P. vittata and maize, and As accumulation in P. vittata and biomass of P. vittata were simultaneously higher under malposed intercropping than under coordinate intercropping, leading to a 2.4 times higher rate of As removal. Although maize roots absorbed over 13.4 mg kg -1 As and maize leaves and flowers accumulated over 21.5 mg kg -1 As (translocation factor higher than 1), grains produced in all intercropping modes accumulated lower levels of As, satisfying the standard for human consumption. Our results suggested that malposed intercropping of a hyperaccumulator and a low-accumulation cash crop was an ideal planting pattern for As remediation in soil. Furthermore, timely harvest of P. vittata, agronomic strategies during remediation, and appropriate management of the above ground parts of P. vittata and high-As tissues of cash crops may further improve remediation efficiency., (Copyright © 2017. A pot experiment was used to investigate arsenic (As) speciation and accumulation in rice, as well as its concentration in both heavily contaminated and moderately contaminated soils amended with manganese oxide-modified biochar composites (MBC) and biochar alone (BC). In heavily As-contaminated soil, application of BC and MBC improved the weight of above-ground part and rice root, whereas in moderately As-contaminated soil, the application of MBC and low rate BC amendment increased rice root, grain weight and the biomass of the plant. Arsenic reduction in different parts of rice grown in MBC-amended soils was greater than that in plants cultivated in BC-amended soils. Such reduction can be attributed to the oxidation of arsenite, As(III), to arsenate, As(V), by Mn-oxides, which also had a strong adsorptive capacity for As(V). MBC amended to As-contaminated soil had a positive effect on amino acids. The Fe and Mn levels in the iron-manganese plaque that formed on the rice root surface differed among the treatments. MBC addition significantly increased Mn content (p < 0.05); the application of 2.0% MBC increased Mn content 36- and 10-fold compared to the control in heavily and moderately As-contaminated soils, respectively. Arsenic (As) contamination and its harmful consequences have gained increasing attention in research. Phytoextraction, which uses the As hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata L., is a well-established technology adopted in many countries. However, the hyperaccumulation mechanisms of this plant remain controversial. This study investigated the species and the micro-distribution of As species in three P. vittata L. ecotypes after exposure to arsenite (AsIII) and arsenate (AsV) for 7d. Arsenic-accumulating abilities and preferences to As species varied among different ecotypes. The reduction of AsV into AsIII, oxidation of AsIII into AsV, and chelation of AsIII with thiols were all observed in P. vittata. The reduction of As mainly occurred in the rhizoid, whereas oxidation and chelation mainly occurred in the aboveground parts. Correlation analyses showed that the As concentration in pinna was significantly correlated with the AsV percentage in paraxial and abaxial epidermis (positive), AsIII-GSH percentage in paraxial epidermis (positive), and AsIII percentage in paraxial and abaxial epidermis (negative). As a typical moderately-brominated diphenylethers, 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE47) is hardly debrominated by a conventional TiO2-mediated photocatalysis. However, its reductive debromination was rapid achieved over silver nanoparticle-loaded TiO2 (Ag/TiO2) in UV-irradiated anoxic acetonitrile-water within 13 min. An "Ag-promoted electron transfer and C-Br cleavage" concept was proposed based on experimental results and density functional theory calculations. Ag(0) exerted affinity interaction with bromine atoms, and the storing of electrons on Ag(0) increased the binding interaction, which elongated the C-Br bond of BDE47 and facilitated its cleavage. The initiating of the BDE47 debromination on Ag(0) required an induction period to enrich a critical amount of electrons, leading to a stronger driving force for both injecting electron to BDE47 and stretching the C-Br bond. Stronger photo-excitation, higher polar solvent, and a moderate Ag(0) load strengthened the interfacial electron transfer over Ag/TiO2, and thereby shortening the induction time and accelerating the BDE47 degradation., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Present study explores physiological, biochemical and proteomic changes in leaves of upland cotton (ZMS-49) using 500 μM cadmium (Cd) along with control. Leaves' biomass and chlorophyll pigments decreased at 500 μM Cd. Cd contents in roots were higher than leaves. Levels of ROS ( [Formula: see text] and H2O2) both in vivo and in vitro and MDA contents were significantly increased. Chlorophyll parameters (F0, Fm, Fm(') and Fv/Fm), total soluble protein contents and APX showed a decline at 500 μM Cd. SOD, CAT and POD and GR activities significantly enhanced. Less ultrastructural alterations in leaves under Cd stress could be observed. Scanning micrographs at 500 μM Cd possessed less number of stomata as well as near absence of closed stomata. Cd could be located in cell wall, vacuoles and intracellular spaces. Important upregulated proteins were methionine synthase, ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase, apoplastic anionic guaiacol peroxidase, glyceraldehydes-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (chloroplastic isoform) and ATP synthase D chain, (mitochondrial). Important downregulated proteins were seed storage proteins (vicilin and legumin), molecular chaperones (hsp70, chaperonin-60 alpha subunit; putative protein disulfide isomerase), ATP-dependent Clp protease, ribulose-1,5-bisphophate carboxylase/oxygenase large subunit. Increase in the activities of ROS-scavenging enzymes, less ultrastructural modification, Cd-deposition in dead parts of cells as well as active regulation of different proteins showed Cd-resistant nature of ZMS-49., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Mapping the spatial distribution of contaminants in soils is the basis of pollution evaluation and risk control. Interpolation methods are extensively applied in the mapping processes to estimate the heavy metal concentrations at unsampled sites. The performances of interpolation methods (inverse distance weighting, local polynomial, ordinary kriging and radial basis functions) were assessed and compared using the root mean square error for cross validation. The results indicated that all interpolation methods provided a high prediction accuracy of the mean concentration of soil heavy metals. However, the classic method based on percentages of polluted samples, gave a pollution area 23.54-41.92% larger than that estimated by interpolation methods. The difference in contaminated area estimation among the four methods reached 6.14%. According to the interpolation results, the spatial uncertainty of polluted areas was mainly located in three types of region: (a) the local maxima concentration region surrounded by low concentration (clean) sites, (b) the local minima concentration region surrounded with highly polluted samples; and (c) the boundaries of the contaminated areas., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Remediation of pesticide-polluted soil is particularly challenging when pesticides in soil are aged and a mixture of pesticides is present. Application of zerovalent iron (Fe(0)) was investigated to accelerate the degradation of HCHs (alpha-, beta-, gamma- and delta-hexachlorocyclohexane) and DDX (DDT, DDE and DDD) in the soil from a former organochlorine pesticide manufacturing plant. Ultrasonic extraction was used extract the organochlorine pesticides from soil. The identification and quantification of organochlorine pesticides in the extracts were accomplished by gas chromatograph. The addition of Fe(0) facilitated the degradation of the beta-HCH isomer, but had little effect on the degradation of alpha-HCH, gamma-HCH and delta-HCH. Zerovalent iron significantly increased the degradation of p,p'-DDT and o,p'-DDT in soil, and the percentage degradation of p,p'-DDT and o,p'-DDT increased with increased Fe(0) concentration during the first period of incubation. However, the amount of p,p'-DDD, the main dechlorinated product of p,p'-DDT, basically kept increased except in the unamended soil. The cellular distributions of Pb and As in the leaves of co-hyperaccumulator Viola principis H. de Boiss. were inspected by synchrotron X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (SRXRF). The results revealed that Pb and As had similar compartmentalization patterns in the leaves. Both elements were enriched in the bundle sheath and the palisade mesophyll. In comparison with the sheath and the mesophyll, the vascular bundle and the epidermis contained lower levels of Pb and As. The palisade enrichment of Pb and As indicated that V. principis H. de Boiss. may have a special mechanism on detoxification of toxic metals within the mesophyll cells. Relative concentrations of both Pb and As in trichome bases were higher than those in trichome rays. The results of hierarchical cluster analysis and correlation analysis confirmed that the distribution of Pb was similar to that of As in the leaves, and their distribution patterns were different from the nutrient elements, such as K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu and Zn. In vivo cellular localization of Pb and As in the leaves provides insight into the physiological mechanisms of metal tolerance and hyperaccumulation in the hyperaccumulators.

This study investigated the impacts of arsenic (As) on the chloroplast ultrastructure and calcium (Ca) distribution in Chinese brake (Pteris vittata L.) mainly by histochemical methods, with an emphasis on the possible function of Ca in As detoxification and accumulation in P. vittata. P. vittata was grown in an artificially contaminated soil added with different concentrations of Na(2)HAsO(4) (0, 100, 300 and 800 mg kg(-1) As dry soil) for 24 weeks in a greenhouse. The addition of As did not affect the chloroplast ultrastructure of young pinna, meanwhile most of the membrane systems of chloroplasts in mature pinna were severely damaged under high As condition. Calcium concentration in the fronds of P. vittata was not significantly affected by the addition of As, but Ca concentration in the mature pinna significantly increased by As addition, consistent with the position appearing As toxicity. When no As was added, most of calcium precipitates distributed around the inner membrane of vacuole. But when the pinna appeared plasmolysis, more calcium precipitates resided outside the cell membrane and bigger particles evenly distributed in the cytoplasm. All the results indicated that Ca had a close relation with As toxicity in P. vittata.

A field investigation and pot experiments were conducted to determine the potential of arsenic (As) hyperaccumulator, Pteris vittata L., to remediate sites co-contaminated with zinc (Zn) and As. We found that P. vittata L. had a very high tolerance to Zn and grew normally at sites with high Zn concentrations. In addition, P. vittata L. could effectively take up Zn into its fronds, with a maximum of 737 mg kg(-1) under field conditions. In pot experiments, the accumulated Zn concentration increased significantly as the Zn treatment was raised from 0 to 2000 mg kg(-1), with a maximum Zn accumulation of 0.22 mg pot(-1). Although the concentration of As in P. vittata L. was reduced by the addition of Zn, total frond accumulation of As was elevated when the Zn treatment was increased from 0 to 1000 mg kg(-1), with a maximum As accumulation of 8.3 mg pot(-1) in the presence of 1000 mg kg(-1) Zn. The high Zn tolerance, relatively high ability to accumulate Zn, and great capacity to accumulate As under conditions of suppression by high Zn suggest that P. vittata L. could be useful for the remediation of sites co-contaminated with Zn and As.

Assessing the concentration of potentially harmful heavy metals in the soil of urban parks is imperative in order to evaluate the potential risks to residents and tourists. To date, little research on soil pollution in China's urban parks has been conducted. To identify the concentrations and sources of heavy metals, and to assess the soil environmental quality, samples were collected from 30 urban parks located in the city of Beijing. Subsequently, the concentrations of Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in the samples were analyzed. The investigation revealed that the accumulations of Cu and Pb were readily apparent in the soils. The integrated pollution index (IPI) of these four metals ranged from 0.97 to 9.21, with the highest IPI in the densely populated historic center district (HCD). Using multivariate statistic approaches (principal components analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis), two factors controlling the heavy metal variability were obtained, which accounted for nearly 80% of the total variance. Nickel and Zn levels were controlled by parent material in the soils, whereas Cu, Pb and, in part, Zn were accounted for mainly by anthropogenic activities. The findings presented here indicate that the location and the age of the park are important factors in determining the extent of heavy metal, particularly Cu and Pb, pollution. In addition, the accumulation of Zn did not appear to reach pollution levels, and no obvious pollution by Ni was observed in the soils of the parks in Beijing.
