Abstract

Chromium has two main oxidation states, Cr(III) and Cr(VI), that can occur simultaneously in natural waters. Current consensus holds that Cr(VI) is of high ecotoxicological concern, but regards Cr(III) as poorly bioavailable and relatively non-toxic. In this work, the effects and bioaccumulation of Cr(III), Cr(VI) and their mixture were studied using the freshwater clam Corbicula fluminea as a model organism. Mixture exposures were carried out using solutions isotopically enriched in 50Cr(III) or 53Cr(VI), allowing to quantify the contribution of each redox form to total Cr accumulation in the clams. Following exposure to individual redox forms, Cr(III) accumulated preferentially in the digestive glands and Cr(VI) in the gills of C. fluminea. In mixture exposures, both redox forms accumulated mainly in the gills; the concentration of Cr(III) in the digestive glands being much lowered compared with individual exposures. Both oxidation states affected the expression of biomarkers related to energy reserves, cellular damage and mitochondrial functioning, as well as the expression of mRNA for detoxification genes. The observed effects differed between gills and digestive glands. The present study suggests that Cr(III) is a bioavailable and biologically active elemental species deserving more consideration by the ecotoxicological community.

Abstract

The need for personal protective equipment increased exponentially in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. To cope with the mask shortage during springtime 2020, a French consortium was created to find ways to reuse medical and respiratory masks in healthcare departments. The consortium addressed the complex context of the balance between cleaning medical masks in a way that maintains their safety and functionality for reuse, with the environmental advantage to manage medical disposable waste despite the current mask designation as single-use by the regulatory frameworks. We report a Workflow that provides a quantitative basis to determine the safety and efficacy of a medical mask that is decontaminated for reuse. The type IIR polypropylene medical masks can be washed up to 10 times, washed 5 times and autoclaved 5 times, or washed then sterilized with radiations or ethylene oxide, without any degradation of their filtration or breathability properties. There is loss of the anti-projection properties. The Workflow rendered the medical masks to comply to the AFNOR S76-001 standard as "type 1 non-sanitory usage masks". This qualification gives a legal status to the Workflow-treated masks and allows recommendation for the reuse of washed medical masks by the general population, with the significant public health advantage of providing better protection than cloth-tissue masks. Additionally, such a legal status provides a basis to perform a clinical trial to test the masks in real conditions, with full compliance with EN 14683 norm, for collective reuse. The rational reuse of medical mask and their end-of-life management is critical, particularly in pandemic periods when decisive turns can be taken. The reuse of masks in the general population, in industries, or in hospitals (but not for surgery) has significant advantages for the management of waste without degrading the safety of individuals wearing reused masks.

Abstract

International audience; This study focusses on the electrochemical decomposition of synthetic azo dyes (RO16, RR120 and DR80) using stainless steel electrodes, which is efficient, cost effective and industrially driven process. The experiments were carried out in a continuous electrochemical reactor and the effects of influencing parameters (initial concentration of dye, electrolyte concentration, pH) governing the process efficiency was studied. The interaction between the influencing parameters was investigated using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and the regression value obtained for the generated model was above 0.9 for all the three dyes. The elimination capacity of electrochemical reactor was studied for the continuous removal of azo dyes with different ranges of concentration (100-400 mg L-1) and flow rate (0.1-0.5 L h-1). The maximum elimination capacity was obtained at a flow rate of 0.5 L h-1 for 300 mg L-1 of initial concentration of dye for RO16 and RR120 whereas it was 0.5 L h-1 for 400 mg L-1 of DR80. Further, a general dimensionless current density relation has been established for stirred tank reactor and allowed characterizing the relationship between kinetics and mass transport contributing to the overall reaction rate. The results quantitatively confirmed that the rate of electrochemical decolorization increased with the increasing initial dye concentration and flow rate due to the mass transport limitation. As newly established, the decolorization is also directly linked to the number of azo bonds.

Abstract

The rare earth element (REE) contamination of urban wastewater, which was collected from open sewers and the inlet of a wastewater treatment plant in Cotonou (Benin), was assessed. The drinking water distributed to the inhabitants of Cotonou and water samples from private wells were also analyzed. The sampling occurred between October and December 2016 and the samples were analyzed by ICP-MS. Although the only magnetic resonance imaging facility in Cotonou opened in November 2016, pollution by anthropogenic gadolinium (Gd), which is included in phase contrast agents, was observed: there was 30-620 times more Gd in wastewater samples than in drinking and well water samples. Europium was another REE presenting positive anomalies. It is hypothetized than the europium came from the leachates of solid waste piles in the street. In the absence of any wastewater treatment, the REEs found in the wastewater are spread to the aquatic environment. It would be interesting to monitor the wastewater REEs over the long term. So far, the aquifers used for water provision have not been polluted by the anthropogenic REEs.

Abstract

International audience; The aim of this study was to demonstrate that the effectiveness of slaughterhouse wastewater treatment by activated sludge could be enhanced through the use of optical techniques, such as UV-Visible absorbance and fluorescence spectroscopy, to estimate the hydraulic retention time necessary to remove the biodegradable chemical oxygen demand (COD). Two experiments were conducted. First, a batch aerobic degradation was performed on four wastewater samples collected from four different cattle processing sites in order to study the changes in the spectroscopic properties of wastewater during biodegradation. Second, a sequencing batch reactor was used in order to confirm that the wastewater fluorescence could be successfully used to monitor wastewater biodegradation in a pilot-scale experiment. Residual blood was the main source of organic matter in the wastewater samples. The absorbance at 416 nm, related to porphyrins, was correlated to the COD during wastewater biodegradation. The tryptophan-like/fulvic-like fluorescence intensity ratio was related to the extent of biodegradation. The COD removal efficiency ranged from 74% to 94% with an hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 23 h. A ratio of tryptophan-like/fulvic-like fluorescence intensities higher than 1.2 indicated incomplete biodegradation of the wastewater and the need to increase the HRT.

Abstract

An industrial coating site in activity located on a chalky plateau, contaminated by BTEX (mainly xylenes, no benzene), is currently remediated by in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO). We present the bench scale study that was conducted to select the most appropriate oxidant. Ozone and catalyzed hydrogen peroxide (Fenton's reaction) were discarded since they were incompatible with plant activity. Permanganate, activated percarbonate and activated persulfate were tested. Batch experiments were run with groundwater and groundwater-chalk slurries with these three oxidants. Total BTEX degradation in groundwater was reached with all the oxidants. The molar ratios [oxidant]:[Fe(2+)]:[BTEX] were 100:0:1 with permanganate, 100:100:1 with persulfate and 25:100:1 with percarbonate. Precipitation of either manganese dioxide or iron carbonate (siderite) occurred. The best results with chalk slurries were obtained with permanganate at the molar ratio 110:0:1 and activated persulfate at the molar ratio 110:110:1. To avoid precipitation, persulfate was also used without activation at the molar ratio 140:1. Natural Oxidant Demand measured with both oxidants was lower than 5% of initial oxidant contents. Activated percarbonate was not appropriate because of radical scavenging by carbonated media. Permanganate and persulfate were both effective at oxidant concentrations of ca 1 g kg(-1) with permanganate and 1.8 g kg(-1) with persulfate and adapted to site conditions. Activation of persulfate was not mandatory. This bench scale study proved that ISCO remediation of a chalky aquifer contaminated by mainly xylenes was possible with permanganate and activated or unactivated persulfate.

Abstract

International audience; In the present study a new application of solubilization of phenanthrene above cloud point of Brij 30 in biodegradation was developed. It was shown that a temporal solubilization of phenanthrene above cloud point of Brij 30 (5 wt%) permitted to obtain a stable increase of the solubility of phenanthrene even when the temperature was decreased to culture conditions of used microorganism Pseudomonas putida (28 degrees C). A higher initial concentration of soluble phenanthrene was obtained after the cloud point treatment: 200 against 120 mu M without treatment. All soluble phenanthrene was metabolized and a higher final concentration of its major metabolite - 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid - (160 against 85 mu M) was measured in the culture medium in the case of a preliminary cloud point treatment. Therefore a temporary solubilization at cloud point might have a perspective application in the enhancement of biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Abstract

International audience; The direct and indirect interaction mechanisms of pyrene with (i) various molecular weight fractions of a synthetic humic-like substance (SyHA) and (ii) extracts of natural humic acids (NHA) from Moselle River suspended matter, were investigated using quenching fluorescence and surface tension measurements. Humic materials were characterized in a previous study. The Stern-Volmer associative constants were determined from the quenching technique. Surface tension measurements revealed an increase in surface activity as a function of concentration for each humic fraction independently of the pyrene presence in solution, even during the formation of humic micelles. The results obtained suggest the possibility of specific intermolecular interactions occurring during pyrene entrapment within humic acids. In addition, we show that molecular weight, aliphatic chains (especially those containing nitrogen groups) and acidity are determinant characteristics for pollutant entrapment capacity at concentrations below the critical micellar concentration (CMC) of humic substances.

Abstract

The solid waste of olive oil extraction processes (olive pomace, OP) was converted into activated carbon (AC) by treating it with NaOH and then encapsulating it within sodium alginate (SA) in beads by crosslinking (SA-AC beads). The prepared SA-AC beads were utilized as an adsorbent for the elimination and recovery of phenolic compounds (PCs) from olive mill wastewater (OMWW) following a zero liquid and waste discharge approach to implement and promote the circular economy concept. The novel AC and SA-AC beads were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) analysis. The adsorption performance of these beads was evaluated in batch and fixed-bed reactors operated in a concurrent flow system. The results revealed that an adsorption capacity of 68 mg g -1 was attained for 4000 mg L -1 phenolic compounds. The kinetics of the adsorption process of the PCs fit a pseudo second-order model, and the most likely mechanism took place in two stages. The adsorption isotherm conformed to the Langmuir model, representing the monolayer adsorption of the phenolic compounds. The dynamic models were used, and they accurately represented the breakthrough curves. Considering PC recovery and process reusability, a regeneration experiment of SA-AC beads was carried out in fixed-bed reactors. SA-AC beads showed a high percentage desorption >40% using ethanol and were efficient after several cycles of OMWW treatment and phenol recovery., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd.
