In support of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) global monitoring plan under the Stockholm Convention contributing laboratories were offered to take part in a series of interlaboratory assessments on persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The results of two rounds of these assessments are reported. The target compounds were polychlorinated biphenyls, organochlorine pesticides, polybrominated diphenylethers, one polybrominated biphenyl and hexabromocyclododecane diastereomers. The matrices distributed were a test solution, fish, sediment, human milk, and air extracts. The number of participants in each round was well over 100, showing the interest of laboratories worldwide. The results showed that many laboratories still struggle to obtain acceptable standard deviations of around 25% for their determinations. In particular for organochlorine pesticides serious improvement in quality is required. Acceptable results were obtained for the air extracts and for the determination of polybrominated diphenylethers in various matrices.

Chromium (Cr) has many applications in industry and day-to-day life, entering the terrestrial environment mostly from anthropogenic sources. Despite the fact that Cr is essential, it can be harmful in biota at high concentrations. Full life cycle tests (FLCt) are scarce, representing a gap for soil ecotoxicology. Hence, the effects of Cr were studied using the soil organism Enchytraeus crypticus in the 46-day FLCt and the standard 21-day enchytraeid reproduction test (ERT). FLCt hatching (day-11) and time to reach maturity (day 22–25) were the most sensitive endpoints, representing a delay, partly recovered with time. Reproduction was reduced to similar levels in both the ERT and the FLCt (EC50∼320 mg Cr/kg), but survival was more affected in the ERT (LC50 = 377 mg Cr/kg) than in the FLC (LC50 = 467 mg Cr/kg). This could be due to the induction of stress response mechanisms at earlier life stages (cocoons/juveniles), providing protection to toxicity in a later stage (adults). FLCt results provided considerably more details and data points, and the additional endpoints allowed to explain the source of observed effects, e.g. a direct impact on fecundity and not only due to adult mortality. The estimated population growth curves confirmed the significant effect of 320 mg Cr/kg and onwards, reflecting the impact of Cr on both cocoon production and juvenile performance, with follow-up consequences for reproduction. An Adverse Outcome Pathway was drafted. The FLCt design is recommended as an upgrade of the current standard ERT, which could be integrated into the existing OECD ERT test guideline.

Nitrogenous flame retardants (NFRs) have aroused worldwide public concern as their nephrotoxic effect. However, knowledge regarding the pathogenesis mechanism of their exposure to induce kidney injury remains largely unknown. Marine plastic pollution caused by non-biodegradable polymers is a major worldwide concern. So-called “biodegradable” polymers should reduce plastic pollution in the environment by the safeguard of biodegradation. However, many polyesters degrade very slowly in seawater. We therefore designed a systematic library of “breaking points” that are installed into a polylactide backbone and simulated their degradation mechanisms, including internal and external SN2 mechanisms, Addition-Elimination (AE) mechanisms, and RNA-inspired mechanisms. The breaking points are composed of phosphoesters with pendant nucleophiles directly at the P-atom, or structurally similar silicones, or side-chain functional polyesters. All P-containing breaking points react via the RNA-inspired mechanism, while Si-containing linkers undergo decomposition via the A-E mechanism. For C-containing linkers, only when a long pendant chain (4 carbon atoms) is present can the reaction proceed via the RNA-inspired mechanism. In cases of shorter pendants, the Addition-Elimination (AE) mechanism is energetically favorable. We believe that these calculations will pave the way for the synthesis of exceptionally seawater-degradable polyesters in the future that can act as a safeguard to prevent microplastic formation after eventual littering.

This research studied the occurrence, risk assessment and metals associated with microplastic (MPs) in soil of different land-use types in the south west of Iran. One hundred samples were collected from topsoil and MPs were extracted using the floatation method. In total, 9258 MPs particles with mean of 92.85 ± 119.24 particles kg−1 were counted. The mean MPs abundance in urban soils was 2.8 and 3.2 times higher than in industrial and agricultural soils, respectively. Fragment (43%) and small MPs (100–250 μm; 41%), were the dominant shape and size, respectively. Four main polymer types including Poly Ethylene (High Density Poly Ethylene and Low Density Poly Ethylene), Nylon (PA), Poly Propylene (PP), and Poly Styrene (PS) were identified. Nylon (29%) and PE (29%) were dominant polymer types. MPs particles in soil contained different levels of metals such as Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Pb, Zn, and Y, except La and Yb. The mean concentrations of metals were higher in MPs than in soil. The indices of MPs-induced risk (Hstudyarea=16.8) showed a hazard level (III) in the study area. Pollution load index (PLILandusetype) showed hazard level (II) for urban soils and hazard level (I) for industrial and agriculture soils, respectively. Overall, risk index indicated high to extreme danger for MPs pollution in the study area. This is the comprehensive study on the occurrence of soil MPs and associated metals, which provides basic information for a further study concerning ecosystem health in Shiraz.
