The efficiency of the Fenton reaction is markedly contingent upon the operational pH related to iron solubility. Therefore, a heterogeneous Fenton reaction has been developed to function at neutral pH. In the present study, the Bio-Fenton reaction was carried out using magnetite (Fe(II)Fe(III) 2 O 4 ) and H 2 O 2 generated by a newly isolated H 2 O 2 -producing bacterium, Desemzia sp. strain C1 at pH 6.8 to degrade chloroacetanilide herbicides. The optimal conditions for an efficient Bio-Fenton reaction were 10 mM of lactate, 0.5% (w/v) of magnetite, and resting-cells (O.D. 600  = 1) of strain C1. During the Bio-Fenton reaction, 1.8-2.0 mM of H 2 O 2 was generated by strain C1 and promptly consumed by the Fenton reaction with magnetite, maintaining stable pH conditions. Approximately, 40-50% of the herbicides underwent oxidation through non-specific reactions of •OH, leading to dealkylation, dechlorination, and hydroxylation via hydrogen atom abstraction. Increasing production of energy crops in Europe, mainly maize and rapeseed, has altered patterns of pesticide use in recent decades. The long-term effects of S-metolachlor (S-M) and of its metabolite metolachlor OA (M-OA) at the environmentally relevant concentration of 4.2 μg L -1 and at 42 μg L -1 (ten-fold concentration) on marbled crayfish (Procambarus virginalis) were evaluated in a 28-day exposure and after a subsequent 28-day recovery period. Indicators assessed were behaviour; biochemical haemolymph profile; oxidative and antioxidant parameters of gill, hepatopancreas, and muscle; and histology of hepatopancreas and gill. Results showed biochemical haemolymph profile (lactate, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, inorganic phosphate), lipid peroxidation in hepatopancreas, and antioxidant parameters (catalase, reduced glutathione, glutathione S-transferase) of hepatopancreas and gill of crayfish exposed to S-M and M-OA to significantly differ from controls (P < 0.01). Antioxidant biomarker levels remained different from controls after a 28-day recovery period. Differences in behaviour including speed of movement and velocity, and histopathological damage to gill and hepatopancreas were associated with S-M and M-OA exposure and persisted after 28 days in S-M- and M-OA-free water. Results suggest harmful effects of low concentrations of S-M and its metabolite M-OA on non-target organisms and provide information for assessing their effects at environmentally relevant concentrations., (Copyright © 2019. We studied the individual and joint acute toxicity of S-metolachlor (SMOC) and deethylatrazine (DEA - a metabolite of atrazine) on different non-target freshwater crustaceans. We used animals from different ecological groups: two amphipods from surface running water (Gammarus pulex and Gammarus cf. orinos), an isopod from surface stagnant water (Asellus aquaticus) and an amphipod living in groundwater (Niphargus rhenorhodanensis). Organisms were exposed to different levels of SMOC and DEA, alone or in binary mixture. Temperature effect on SMOC toxicity was assessed by exposing G. pulex and N. rhenorhodanensis to SMOC at 11 °C and 15 °C. Studying mortality as the biological endpoint, N. rhenorhodanensis was more resistant than surface water species towards SMOC and DEA. Among surface water species, G. pulex was the most sensitive while Gammarus cf. orinos and A. aquaticus showed similar responses to both compounds. Temperature increase did not change SMOC toxicity but modify the shape and steepness of the dose-response curve. We used a Model Deviation Ratio (MDR) approach to evaluate the predictability of Concentration Addition (CA) and Independent Action (IA) models to mixture toxicity. Results indicated either an additive or an antagonistic or a synergistic interaction depending on the concentrations combination and the test species. Our finding conclusively show the suitability of CA and IA in predicting mixture toxicities but results should be interpreted with caution according to ecological group of exposed species in risk assessment procedures., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Pesticide dissipation in wetland systems with regard to hydrological conditions and operational modes is poorly known. Here, we investigated in artificial wetlands the impact of batch versus continuous-flow modes on the dissipation of the chiral herbicide S-metolachlor (S-MET) and hydrological tracers (bromide, uranine and sulforhodamine B). The wetlands received water contaminated with the commercial formulation Mercantor Gold(®) (960 g L(-1) of S-MET, 87% of the S-enantiomer). The tracer mass budget revealed that plant uptake, sorption, photo- and presumably biodegradation were prominent under batch mode (i.e. characterized by alternating oxic-anoxic conditions), in agreement with large dissipation of S-MET (90%) under batch mode. Degradation was the main dissipation pathway of S-MET in the wetlands. The degradate metolachlor oxanilic acid (MOXA) mainly formed under batch mode, whereas metolachlor ethanesulfonic acid (MESA) prevailed under continuous-flow mode, suggesting distinct degradation pathways in each wetland. R-enantiomer was preferentially degraded under batch mode, which indicated enantioselective biodegradation. The release of MESA and MOXA by the wetlands as well as the potential persistence of S-MET compared to R-MET under both oxic and anoxic conditions may be relevant for groundwater and ecotoxicological risk assessment. Pesticides enter surface and groundwater by several routes in which partition to sediment contributes to their fate by abiotic (e.g. photolysis, hydrolysis) and biotic processes. Yet, little is known about S-metolachlor (SM) transformation in water-sediment systems. Therefore, a newly developed screening water-sediment test (WST) was applied to compare biodegradation and sorption processes between pure SM and Mercantor Gold® (MG), a commercial formulation of SM. Photolysis in water was performed by Xe lamp irradiation. Subsequently, the biodegradability of SM and MG photolysis mixtures was examined in WST. The primary elimination of SM from water phase was monitored and structures of its TPs resulting from biotransformation (bio-TPs) were elucidated by LC-MS/MS. SM was extracted from sediment in order to estimate the role of sorption in WST for its elimination. A set of in silico prediction software tools was applied for toxicity assessment of SM and its bio-TPs. Obtained results suggest that the MG adjuvants do not significantly affect biodegradation, but do influence diffusion of SM into sediment. 50% of SM could not be re-extracted from sediment with 0.01 M CaCl2 aqueous solution recommended in OECD test guideline for adsorption. Neither the parent compound nor the photo-TPs were biodegraded. However, new bio-TPs have been generated from SM and MG photo-TPs due to bacterial activity in the water-sediment interphase. Moreover, according to in silico assessment of the bio-TPs the biotransformation might lead to an increased toxicity to the water organisms compared with the SM. The increasing reuse of organic nitrogen-rich wastewater raises concerns regarding the formation of nitrogenous disinfection by-products (N-DBPs), such as haloacetonitriles and haloacetamides. Previous research mainly focused on N-DBPs formation from dissolved organic matter in wastewater. In this study, dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) and dichloroacetamide (DCAcAm) formation from particles in the secondary effluents of a domestic wastewater treatment plant during chlorination was assessed to account for 26-46% of the total formation. As part of particles in wastewater, bacterial cells enriched in organic nitrogen are considered a potential source for the formation of N-DBPs during chlorination. The formation of DCAN, DCAcAm and trichloroacetamide (TCAcAm) during the chlorination of a Gram-negative bacterium of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and a Gram-positive bacterium of Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) were then evaluated. Compared with dissolved organic matter in the secondary effluent, bacterial cells formed more DCAN, DCAcAm and TCAcAm during chlorination. E. faecalis formed more DCAN, but less DCAcAm and TCAcAm than E. coli did under most chlorination conditions. Moreover, the effects of contact time, chlorine dose, pH value and ammonia nitrogen concentration on the N-DBPs formation from the two bacterial suspensions were investigated. Under the chlorination conditions in this study, DCAN formation from the bacterial suspensions initially increased and then decreased, while TCAcAm formation increased with increasing contact time and chlorine dose. DCAcAm formation from the bacterial suspensions increased with the prolonged contact time, and increased and then decreased with increasing chlorine dose. DCAN, DCAcAm and TCAcAm formation was favored under neutral pH condition, but was reduced with the addition of ammonia during the chlorination of the two bacterial suspensions., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Assessing pesticide fate in conservation agricultural systems requires a detailed understanding of their interaction with decomposing surface crop residues (mulch). Adsorption and desorption behavior of glyphosate, s-metolachlor and epoxiconazole was investigated on maize mulch residues decomposed under laboratory and field conditions. Our conceptual approach included characterization of chemical composition and hydrophobicity of mulch residues in order to generate parameters to predict sorption behavior. Adsorption of s-metolachlor and epoxiconazole greatly increased with mulch decomposition, whereas glyphosate adsorption was less affected but its desorption was increased. Mulch characteristics including aromaticity, hydrophobicity and polarity indices were strongly correlated to Koc of the non-ionic pesticides. A predictive model based on compositional data (CoDa) analysis revealed that the sorption capacity of decomposing mulch can be predicted from descriptors such as aromatic and alkyl C corresponding respectively to lignin and NDF biochemical fractions. Biotransformation studies of atrazine, metolachlor and evolution of their metabolites were carried out in soils and subsoils of Northern Greece. Trace atrazine, its metabolites and metolachlor residues were detected in field soil samples 1 year after their application. The biotransformation rates of atrazine were higher in soils and subsoils of field previously exposed to atrazine (maize field sites) than in respective layers of the field margin. The DT(50) values of atrazine ranged from 5 to 18d in the surface layers of the adapted soils. DT(50) values of atrazine increased as the soil depth increased reaching the value of 43 d in the 80-110 cm depth layer of adapted soils. Metolachlor degraded at slower rates than atrazine in surface soils, subsoils of field and field margins with the respective DT(50) values ranging from 56 to 72 d in surface soils and from 165 to 186 d in subsoils. Hydroxyatrazine was the most frequently detected metabolite of atrazine. The maximum concentrations of metolachlor-OXA and metolachlor-ESA were detected in the soil layers of 20-40 cm depth after 90 d of incubation. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of soil Phospholipid Fatty Acids (PLFAs), fungal/bacterial and Gram-negative/Gram-positive ratios of the PLFA profiles revealed that the higher biotransformation rates of atrazine were simultaneously observed with the abundance of Gram-negative bacteria while the respective rates of metolachlor were observed in soil samples with abundance of fungi., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. The degradation of alachlor by direct ozonation and advanced oxidation process O(3)/H(2)O(2) was investigated in this study with focus on identification of degradation byproducts. The second-order reaction rate constant between ozone and alachlor was determined to be 2.5+/-0.1M(-1)s(-1) at pH 7.0 and 20 degrees C. Twelve and eight high-molecular-weight byproducts (with the benzene ring intact) from alachlor degradation were identified during direct ozonation and O(3)/H(2)O(2), respectively. The common degradation byproducts included N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-methyleneamine, 8-ethyl-3,4-dihydro-quinoline, 8-ethyl-quinoline, 1-chloroacetyl-2-hydro-3-ketone-7-acetyl-indole, 2-chloro-2',6'-diacetyl-N-(methoxymethyl)acetanilide, 2-chloro-2'-acetyl-6'-ethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)-acetanilide, and two hydroxylated alachlor isomers. In direct ozonation, four more byproducts were also identified including 1-chloroacetyl-2,3-dihydro-7-ethyl-indole, 2-chloro-2',6'-ethyl-acetanilide, 2-chloro-2',6'-acetyl-acetanilide and 2-chloro-2'-ethyl-6'-acetyl-N-(methoxymethyl)-acetanilide. Degradation of alachlor by O(3) and O(3)/H(2)O(2) also led to the formation of low-molecular-weight byproducts including formic, acetic, propionic, monochloroacetic and oxalic acids as well as chloride ion (only detected in O(3)/H(2)O(2)). Nitrite and nitrate formation was negligible. Alachlor degradation occurred via oxidation of the arylethyl group, N-dealkylation, cyclization and cleavage of benzene ring. After O(3) or O(3)/H(2)O(2) treatment, the toxicity of alachlor solution examined by the Daphnia magna bioassay was slightly reduced., (2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.)

Recent monitoring investigations have shown that antimicrobial agents used in veterinary medicine can cause non-point source contamination of soils through manure spreading. In the present study, the effect of the antimicrobial agent sulfamethazine (sulfadimidine) on degradation and sorption of the herbicide metolachlor in a sandy loam soil was studied. In soil samples treated with sulfamethazine at two concentrations (15 and 150 microg kg(-1) soil), metolachlor persistence was not different than of that observed in untreated samples. These results were supported by the absence of effects of both sulfamethazine concentration levels on the size of the culturable soil bacteria population. Equilibrating soil samples with metolachlor solutions containing equivalent sulfamethazine concentrations did not lead to any significant effects on metolachlor sorption, suggesting that, under the conditions of the present experiment, sulfamethazine did not affect metolachlor bioavailability in soil. This laboratory investigation showed that concentrations of sulfamethazine in the microg kg(-1) range did not cause significant effects on metolachlor degradation and sorption thus not affecting the main processes ruling its environmental fate in soil.

Cyclic hydroxamic acids and lactams are allelochemicals present in the common agricultural crops wheat, rye, and maize. The hydroxamic acids are mainly present in the plants as glucosides. Upon injury or insect attack or when exuded to the soil environment, the hydroxamic acids occur in their unstable agluconic form. In the first step in the transformation of hydroxamic acids, benzoxazolinones are formed spontaneously. It is necessary to elucidate the further microbial transformation of these compounds in the soil environment for a purposeful exploitation of the allelopathic properties of wheat, rye, and maize. In the present paper, the existing knowledge on microbial transformation products of benzoxazolin-2-one (BOA), 6-methoxy-benzoxazolin-2-one (MBOA), and 2-hydroxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (HBOA) was reviewed. Three main groups of transformation products were identified: aminophenoxazinones, malonamic acids, and acetamides. Future research needs concerning the transformation of these chemicals in soil are discussed, when their properties for suppressing weeds and soil-borne diseases are going to be exploited.

The system performance of a trickle-bed air biofilter (TBAB) for treating N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAC) waste gas was investigated under different gas flow rates and influent concentrations. In the pseudo-steady-state conditions, the DMAC elimination capacity increased but the removal efficiency decreased as the influent loading increased. More than 90% and 80% DMAC removal efficiencies are achieved for influent loadings below 20.2 and 34.5 g DMAC/m3/h, respectively. The TBAB appears to be an effective treatment process for controlling DMAC emission with low-to-medium loadings and the effectiveness could be maintained over a long-period operation.

A field experiment at La Bouzule (Lorraine, France) investigated metolachlor movement to subsurface drains in two soil types, a silt loam and a heavy clay soil, under identical agricultural management practices and climatic conditions. Drainage volumes and concentrations of metolachlor in the soil plough layer and drainwater were monitored after herbicide application from May 1996 to February 1997, and from May to August 1998. Total losses in drainwater were 0.08% and 0.18% of the amount applied to the silt loam compared with 0.59% and 0.41% for the clay soil, in 1996/97 and 1998, respectively. In 1996/97, 32% of total metolachlor loss from the silt loam and 91% from the clay soil occurred during the spring/summer period following treatment. Peak concentrations were 18.5 and 171.6 microg l(-1) for the silt loam and 130.6 and 395.3 microg l(-1) for the clay soil during the spring/summer periods of 1996/97 and 1998, respectively. During the autumn/winter period, concentrations did not exceed 2.2 microg l(-1) for the silt loam and 2.6 microg l(-1) for the clay soil. The experimental results indicate that metolachlor losses in drainwater were primarily caused by preferential flow (macropore flow) which was greater in the clay soil than in the silt loam, and occurring mainly during the spring/summer periods.
