Plastic is widely used in agricultural applications, but its waste has an adverse environmental impact and a long-term detrimental effect. The development of biodegradable plastics for agricultural use is increasing to mitigate plastic waste. The most commonly used biodegradable plastic is poly(butylene adipate co-terephthalate)/poly(lactic acid) (PBAT/PLA) polymer. In this study, an analytical procedure based on dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) in combination with chemometrics has been optimized to assess the degradation level of PBAT/PLA films by monitoring their characteristic degradation products. Carboxylic acids (benzoic, phthalic, adipic, heptanoic, and octadecanoic acids) and 1,4-butanediol have been found to be potential markers of PBAT/PLA degradation. The DLLME-GC-MS analytical approach has been applied for the first time to assess the degradation efficiency of several microorganisms used as degradation accelerators of PBAT/PLA based on the assigned potential markers. This analytical strategy has shown higher sensitivity and precision than standard techniques, such as elemental analysis, allowing us to detect low degradation levels. Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) plastic is an omnipresent synthetic polymer in our lives, which causes negative impacts on the ecosystem. It is crucial to take mandatory action to control the usage and sustainable disposal of PET plastics. Recycling plastics using nanotechnology offers potential solutions to the challenges associated with traditional plastic recycling methods. Nano-based degradation techniques improve the degradation process through the influence of catalysts. It also plays a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of recycling processes and modifying them into value-added products. The modified PET waste plastics can be utilized to manufacture batteries, supercapacitors, sensors, and so on. The waste PET modification methods have massive potential for research, which can play major role in removing post-consumer plastic waste. The present review discusses the effects of micro/nano plastics in terrestrial and marine ecosystems and its impacts on plants and animals. Briefly, the degradation and bio-degradation methods in recent research were explored. The depolymerization methods used for the production of monomers from PET waste plastics were discussed in detail. Carbon nanotubes, fullerene, and graphene nanosheets synthesized from PET waste plastics were delineated. Nanoplastics (NPLs) persist in aquatic habitats, leading to incremental research on their interaction mechanisms with metalloids in the environment. In this regard, it is known that plastic debris can reduce the number of water-soluble arsenicals in contaminated environments. Here, the arsenic interaction mechanism with pure NPLs, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), aliphatic polyamide (PA), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) is evaluated using computational chemistry tools. Our results show that arsenic forms stable monolayers on NPLs through surface adsorption, with adsorption energies of 9–24 kcal/mol comparable to those on minerals and composite materials. NPLs exhibit varying affinity towards arsenic based on their composition, with As(V) adsorption showing higher stability than As(III). The adsorption mechanism results from a balance between electrostatics and dispersion forces (physisorption), with an average combined contribution of 87%. PA, PET, PVC, and PS maximize the electrostatic effects over dispersion forces, while PE and PP maximize the dispersion forces over electrostatic effects. The electrostatic contribution is attributed to hydrogen bonding and the activation of terminal O–C, C–H, and C–Cl groups of NPLs, resulting in several pairwise interactions with arsenic. Moreover, NPLs polarity enables high mobility in aqueous environments and fast mass transfer. Upon adsorption, As(III) keeps the NPLs polarity, while As(V) limits subsequent uptake but ensures high mobility in water. The solvation process is destabilizing, and the higher the NPL polarity, the higher the solvation energy penalty. Finally, the mechanistic understanding explains how temperature, pressure, pH, salinity, and aging affect arsenic adsorption. This study provides reliable quantitative data for sorption and kinetic experiments on plastic pollution and enhances our understanding of interactions between water contaminants. It is estimated that the life of plastics is hundreds to thousands of years, their lasting properties making plastic debris absorbing toxic chemicals and degrading into microplastics (MPs). The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of exposure to different size (0.08 and 0.5 μm) polystyrene (PS) in mice. After 16 weeks of exposure, it was found that PS-MPs could be identified in the liver. No effect of PS-MPs treatment on body weight was observed. PS-MPs exposure disturbed lipids and lipid-like molecule metabolisms and perturbed the citrate cycle and oxidative phosphorylation. Meanwhile, isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDHc), nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide -malate dehydrogenase (NAD-MDH), succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), α ketoglutarate dehydrogenase (α-KGDH) activities and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) level were obviously affected by PS-MPs treatment. In addition, significant differences were recorded in catalase (CAT) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, indicating that PS-MPs exposure induced an oxidative stress in the liver. In conclusion, our present study provided the first evidence of: (a) long-term exposure to PS-MPs lead to PS-MPs accumulated in the liver and results in liver injury; (b) long-term exposure to PS-MPs disturbs lipids and lipid-like molecule metabolisms; (c) long-term exposure to PS-MPs perturbs citrate cycle and oxidative phosphorylation and leads to oxidative stress in the liver. The extensive use and improper handling of plastics have caused extensive microplastic (MP) pollution in terrestrial environments. Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), the main additive used in plastics, is toxic to organisms and may pose risks to human and animal reproductive functions. However, research on the release behavior of DEHP from MPs is scarce. In this study, the effects of particle size and environmental conditions (temperature, pH, ionic strength, and cation type) on DEHP release from polylactide (PLA), polystyrene (PS), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs were determined by performing leaching experiments. The results showed that when particle size decreased, the content of DEHP in the MPs and the amount of released DEHP increased though increasing specific surface area. An increase in temperature also promoted DEHP release; when the temperature increased from 15 °C to 45 °C, the amount of DEHP released from PLA, PS, and PVC increased by 38.4%, 71.0%, and 109%, respectively. The lower the crystallinity, the greater the increase in the amount of DEHP released. Ionic strength inhibited the release of DEHP from MPs. When Na+ concentration increased from 0 to 200 mM, the amount of DEHP released from PLA, PS, and PVC decreased by 27.4%, 41.6%, and 35.3%, respectively. The effect of Ca2+ on DEHP release from MPs was greater than that of Na+. In addition, the process of DEHP release from MPs fit well with a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis for managing and controlling the risks associated with plastic wastes. Microplastics (MPs) have become the major global concern due to their adverse effects on the environment, human health, and hygiene. These complex molecules have numerous toxic impacts on human well-being. This review focuses on the methods for chemically quantifying and identifying MPs in real-time samples, as well as the detrimental effects resulting from exposure to them. Biopolymers offer promising solutions for reducing the environmental impact caused by persistent plastic pollution. The review also examines the significant progress achieved in the preparation and modification of various biobased polymers, including polylactic acid (PLA), poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), lignin-based polymers, poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB), and poly(hydroxyalkanoates) (PHA), which hold promise for addressing the challenges associated with unplanned plastic waste disposal. The analysis of microplastics (MP) is time-consuming which limits our capacity to monitor and mitigate plastic pollution. Here, near infrared (1000–2500 nm) hyperspectral imaging (NIR-HSI) offers an advantage over other spectroscopic techniques because it can rapidly image large areas relative to other systems. While NIR-HSI can successfully detect MP, accuracy and limitations of the method have not been fully explored. In addition, lack of open databases and analysis pipelines increases the barrier to use. In this work, we developed a spectral database containing preproduction pellets, consumer products and marine plastic debris, imaged using a Hyspex SWIR-320me imager. A SIMCA model identified four polymer types: polypropylene, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate and polystyrene (PP, PE, PET, PS) to identify MP in hyperspectral images. We determined the accuracy of size estimates for PS MP > 1000 μm using fluorescence microscopy and tested the impact of photooxidation on detection of plastics by NIR-HSI (PE, PP, PS, PET) and subsequent prediction by the SIMCA model. The model performed well across all polymers as shown by high specificity, sensitivity, and accuracy for internal cross validation (>88%), and sensitivity >80% for external validation. PS MP < 500 μm Feret diameter were not consistently detected by NIR-HSI when compared with fluorescence microscopy. However, estimates for Feret diameter were consistent for PS MP > 1000 μm. Analysis by NIR-HSI showed no spectral changes and SIMCA showed no decreased precision with increased photooxidation across polymer types. Recall varied across polymer type and photooxidation stage with no clear trends. This study shows that NIR-HSI is a rapid method which can accurately identify MP of the four most relevant polymer types, precluding the need to analyze particles one at a time. NIR-HSI can be a key technology for environmental monitoring of plastic debris where rapid analysis of multiple samples is required. There has been a growing concern about plastic pollution, both from a health and ecological perspective. One of the major concerns with plastic debris, especially microplastics (MPs) relates to their strong potential for releasing additives and chemicals. Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) is a common plastic additive widely used as plasticizer in plastic products, and is of global concern due to its widespread contamination in the environment. In this study, two conventional nondegradable plastics (polyethylene (PE) bags and PE mulch) and two biodegradable plastics (poly(butylene adipate co-terephtalate)-starch-based-polylactic acid bags (PBAT/PLA bags) and PLA mulch) were selected to investigate the release of DEHP to seawater. The results showed that leaching potentials of DEHP from different types of MPs varied. Among the four selected MPs, PE mulch had the highest leaching potential (6.88 μg/g), followed by PE bags (4.24 μg/g), PLA mulch (1.10 μg/g) and PBAT/PLA bags (0.89 μg/g). The DEHP leaching kinetic curves of the four MPs were all in line with the pseudo first order model. The potential risk of environmental and human exposure to the leached DEHP was assessed using the average Phthalate Pollution Index (PPI). The calculated PPI indicated low pollution risks of DEHP released by the four MPs in seawater. The huge amounts of plastic production (millions of tons) are carried out all around world every year and EU is one of the biggest consumers of these products. In 2021, recycling rate of plastic wastes around 32.5% in the EU and the rest end up on their journey in landfills and oceans that lead to environmental pollution which is a crucial global concern. Thus, it is important to take necessary steps to control the use of such plastic and to sustainably dispose them. One of the solutions to the problem is to use a better alternative to plastics which doesn't degrade land, water or air nor affects living organisms. Circular economy is another answer to this problem, it would ensure prevention of post-consumer plastic waste from getting formed. In addition, sustainable disposal approaches for plastic waste such as pyrolysis, plasma gasification, photocatalytic degradation, and production of value-added products from polymer waste can be explored. Occupancy of waste micro plastic particles in the beach sand is found hazardous sea livings as well as creates the environmental issues. Many research attempts have been made to short out them. This investigation focuses on utilizing such micro plastic to produce cost effective ABS plasticproducts including toys manufacturing. The screened out micro plastic particles were chemically refined to obtain the pro form of Polypropylene (PP) and Polystyrene (PS) and then they used (10 wt%, 15 wt%, 20 wt%and 25 wt%) with raw ABS plastic and prepared billets by injection moulding. The moulding parameters like melting temperature (230 °C, 240 °C, 250 °C and 260 °C), injection pressure (1300 bar, 1400 bar, 1500 bar and 1600 bar) and injection time (0.4s, 0.8s, 1.2s and 1.6s) to maximize the Impact, tensile and flexural strengths of proposed plastic with Taguchi method. The results reveal that 25% micro plastic reinforced specimen prepared at 250 °C, 1400 bar and 1.6s, is outperformed. Plastic pollution is a serious issue in the aquatic environments. This concerning issue of negative impacts of synthetic plastic debris particles in the aquatic ecosystem give rise to the bioplastic materials. These bioplastics are synthesized from biological organisms, retaining same structural and functional ability as synthetic plastics. However, their degradability and toxicity in natural environment is still unknown. So, in this study we have focused on to elucidate the toxicity caused by Bacillus subtilis synthesized biopolymer - polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) microspheres and compare their effects with synthetic plastic. The effect of Synthetic plastic (Polystyrene microspheres) and bioplastic (PHB microspheres) were studied on acute exposure to in-vitro and in-vivo model of Lates calcarifer. PHB microspheres were characterized and confirmed using Flurospectrophotometer, Fourier-Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Particle size analyzer (PSA), Zeta potential and Scanning electron Microscope (SEM). Histopathology assessment for in-vivo model and MTT assay for in-vitro model were performed. The results of fish exposed to 0.5 μg/ml and 1 μg/ml of both microspheres have shown significant necrosis and alteration in muscle, gill and heart tissues. The increased cytotoxicity observed in spleen cell line of Lates calcarifer on exposure to 0.5 μg and 1 μg of both microspheres. Bioplastics are needs specific times for degradation into the aquatic environment. In these results suggest, that even bioplastic have the risk of inducing toxicity similar to the synthetic plastic. The craving for an alternative to the existing plastic products gives rise to the concept of algae-based bioplastic production, which appears to be excellently biodegradable and cost-effective. The significant assortment of algal biopolymers draws great attention to stop the surge of plastic waste and to mitigate the burning problems of environmental pollution. The polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are naturally-occurring biopolymers found in the form of esters accumulated within a number of microbes, which provides the pillar for several biomolecules. Developing novel renewable (and preferably biodegradable) materials has become recurrent due to the growing concerns with environmental impacts of high volumes of plastic waste produced from oil-based sources over the past decades. This study aimed at developing bioplastics from a mixture of starch and xylan in variable ratios, and the combined effect of α-cellulose and holocellulose extracted from sugarcane bagasse added to the process. The disintegration of bioplastics was evaluated in both soil and composting. The ecotoxicity analyses with Saccharomyces cerevisiae , Bacillus subtilis and seeds of Cucumis sativus were conducted after disintegration. All formulations based on 5% (w/v) of total polysaccharides were dried at 30 °C and resulted in homogeneous and non-brittle bioplastics. The composting results showed that all bioplastic formulations disintegrated in 3 days, whereas the 25/75% (xylan/starch, w/w) formulation vanished in soil within 13 days. The ecotoxicity data showed no inhibition of microbial growth after biodegradation, yielding 100% of seed germination. Despite the positive influence of the bioplastic degradation on the root and hypocotyl growth, temporary inhibition of C. sativus tissues exposed to soil washing (10 days of disintegration) was observed. The study demonstrated that xylan/starch bioplastics result in non-ecotoxic biodegradable materials. Micro- and nano-plastics have widely been recognized as major global environmental problem due to its widespread use and inadequate waste management. The emergence of these plastic pollutants in agroecosystem is a legitimate ecotoxicological concerns for food web exchanges. In agriculture, micro/nano plastics are originated from a variety of different agricultural management practices, such as the use of compost, sewage sludge and mulching. A range of soil properties and plant traits are affected by their presence. With the increase of plastic debris, these pollutant materials have now begun to demonstrate serious implications for key soil ecosystem functions, such as soil microbial activity and nutrient cycling. Nitrogen (N) cycle is key predictor of ecological stability and management in terrestrial ecosystem. In this review, we evaluate ecological risks associated with micro-nano plastic for soil-plant system. We also discuss the consequence of plastic pollutants, either positive or negative, on soil microbial activities. In addition, we systematically summarize both direct and hypothesized implications for N cycling in agroecosystem. We conclude that soil N transformation had showed varied effects resulting from different types and sizes of plastic polymers present in soil. While mixed effects of microplastic pollution on plant growth and yield have been observed, biodegradable plastics have appeared to pose greater risk for plant growth compared to chemical plastic polymers.
