This study presents novel composites of biochar (BC) derived from spinach stalks and zinc oxide (ZnO) synthesized from water hyacinth to be used for the first time in a hybrid system for activating persulfate (PS) with photocatalysis for the degradation of bromothymol blue (BTB) dye. The BC/ZnO composites were characterized using innovative techniques. BC/ZnO (2:1) showed the highest photocatalytic performance and BC/ZnO (2:1)@(PS + light) system attained BTB degradation efficiency of 89.47% within 120 min. The optimum operating parameters were determined as an initial BTB concentration of 17.1 mg/L, a catalyst dosage of 0.7 g/L, and a persulfate initial concentration of 8.878 mM, achieving a BTB removal efficiency of 99.34%. The catalyst showed excellent stability over five consecutive runs. Sulfate radicals were the predominant radicals involved in the degradation of BTB. BC/ZnO (2:1)@(PS + light) system could degrade 88.52%, 84.64%, 81.5%, and 77.53% of methylene blue, methyl red, methyl orange, and Congo red, respectively. Further, the BC/ZnO (2:1)@(PS + light) system effectively activated PS to eliminate 97.49% of BTB and 85.12% of dissolved organic carbon in real industrial effluents from the textile industry. The proposed degradation system has the potential to efficiently purify industrial effluents which facilitates the large-scale application of this technique. This study investigates the potential of spent coffee ground biochar (SCGB) as a sustainable and cost-effective adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB), a hazardous dye commonly used in the textile and printing industries. A response surface methodology (RSM) approach with central composite design (CCD) was employed to systematically investigate the effects of key process parameters, including adsorbent dosage, solution pH, contact time and temperature, on MB removal efficiency. The analysis revealed that adsorbent dosage and temperature as critical factors influencing MB removal, with a linear model providing a strong correlation. Optimal conditions for MB removal were determined to be 0.99 g of SCGB, 30 min of contact time, 30 °C temperature, and a solution pH of 7. Under these conditions, MB removal reached 99.99%, with a desirability of 1.000. The experimental results closely matched the predicted values, differing by only 0.02%, thus validating the accuracy of the model. Kinetic studies indicated a rapid adsorption process, well-described by both pseudo-first and pseudo-second order models. Isotherm analysis confirmed the applicability of the Freundlich model, suggesting favorable adsorption with increasing MB concentration. The high adsorption capacity of SCGB is attributed to its carbonaceous and porous structure, highlighting its potential as an effective adsorbent for dye removal in wastewater treatment applications. Food-waste biochar holds significant potential as a bio-solid fuel for achieving carbon neutrality; however, its high content of sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), chlorine (Cl), and nitrogen, inhibits its potential use. This study explored the effects of post-treatment with ascorbic, acetic, citric, and iminodiacetic acids on the properties of food-waste biochar and volatile ionic substances to establish a foundation for assessing both the environmental impact and practical use of food waste. Post-treatment with organic acids achieved 92% Cl-removal efficiency and induced deformation of the functional groups of food-waste biochar surfaces, leading to the re-adsorption of alkali and alkaline earth metals. This re-adsorption of alkali metal ions showed a distinct correlation with NO x mitigation. The amount of re-adsorbed Na and K varied based on the types of organic acids, resulting in different NO x emission reduction effects. Iminodiacetic acid was particularly effective in alleviating Ca and PO 4 volatilization, whereas citric acid exhibited the highest Ca elution performance, and the Ca-contained leachate is a potential source of CO 2 storage through indirect mineral carbonation. Acetic acid is the most feasible alternative, considering both economic and environmental aspects. The findings suggest that the post-treatment of food-waste biochar effectively mitigates air pollutants during combustion and is beneficial for sustainable biosolid fuel production and bio-waste management. Military activities and the production or disposal of ammunition often lead to soil contamination with energetic compounds (ECs) such as dinitrotoluene, trinitrotoluene, and hexogen, posing significant threats to human health and the ecosystem. Biochar has emerged as a cost-effective and widely available solution for remediating contaminated sites characterized by its capacity for pollutant removal through adsorption and conversion process, along with minimal secondary pollution. This paper provides a comprehensive review of relevant literature on biochar's efficacy in eliminating ECs, including an analysis of the underlying mechanisms. The discussion addresses challenges and opportunities associated with biochar application in ECs remediation, offering insights for future research directions. Biochar is considered a promising biosorbent for harmful organic pollutants in aqueous media. However, only a limited number of biochars derived from industrial sludges have been utilized due to their problematic high ash content and heavy metal leaching. In this study, a highly effective biochar was prepared as a superabsorbent for ciprofloxacin (CIP) from chemical manufacturing plant sludge via K 2 CO 3 -activated pyrolysis, and its CIP removal behavior was evaluated. Unlike sewage sludge, chemical manufacturing plant sludge contains low SiO 2 , resulting in an ultra-pure carbon (95.4%) based biochar with almost negligible ash content. As the pyrolysis temperature increased from 400 to 800 °C, the ordered graphitic carbon structure transformed into an amorphous carbon phase, and most oxygen-containing groups disappeared. However, the pore size significantly decreased to ∼4.5 nm due to the corrosive carbon volatilization caused by K 2 CO 3 , resulting in an extremely large surface area of 2331.8 m2/g. Based on its large surface area and porous carbon structure, the activated biochar at 800 °C (CAB-800) exhibited an outstanding CIP adsorption capacity of 555.56 mg/g. The CIP adsorption isotherm, kinetic, and thermodynamic studies were systematically investigated. The CIP adsorption on CAB-800 was mainly attributed to π-π interactions and hydrogen bond formation, with electrostatic interactions partially contributing to the adsorption reaction. From pH 2 to 12, CAB-800 showed an excellent CIP adsorption capacity of over 316.7 mg/g, with adsorption favored under acidic conditions. Except for HCO 3 − and CO 3 2−, the presence of anions and humic acids did not significantly affect CIP adsorption capacity. These results demonstrate that biochar produced from chemical manufacturing industry sludge via K 2 CO 3 activation is a highly feasible material for the removal of CIP from aqueous media. Concurrent heavy metals remediation in natural environments poses significant challenges due to factors like metal speciation and interactions with soil moisture. This review focuses on strategies for immobilizing both anionic and cationic metals simultaneously in soil-crop systems. Key approaches include water management, biochar utilization, stabilizing agents, nanotechnology, fertilization, and bioremediation. Sprinkler or intermittent irrigation combined with soil amendments/biochar effectively immobilizes As/Cd/Pb simultaneously. This immobilization occurs through continuous adsorption-desorption, oxidation-reduction, and precipitation mechanisms influenced by soil pH, redox reactions, and Fe-oxides. Biochar from sources like wine lees, sewage sludge, spent coffee, and Fe-nanoparticles can immobilize As/Cd/Pb/Cr/Co/Cu/Zn together via precipitation. In addition, biochar from rice, wheat, corn straw, rice husk, sawdust, and wood chips, modified with chemicals or nanoparticles, simultaneously immobilizes As and Cd, containing higher Fe 3 O 4 , Fe-oxide, and OH groups. Ligand exchange immobilizes As, while ion exchange immobilizes Cd. Furthermore, combining biochar especially with iron, hydroxyapatite, magnetite, goethite, silicon, graphene, alginate, compost, and microbes—can achieve simultaneous immobilization. Other effective amendments are selenium fertilizer, Ge-nanocomposites, Fe–Si materials, ash, hormone, and sterilization. Notably, combining nano-biochar with microbes and/or fertilizers with Fe-containing higher adsorption sites, metal-binding cores, and maintaining a neutral pH could stimulate simultaneous immobilization. The amendments have a positive impact on soil physio-chemical improvement and crop development. Crops enhance production of growth metabolites, hormones, and xylem tissue thickening, forming a protective barrier by root Fe-plaque containing higher Fe-oxide, restricting upward metal movement. Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) may pose a potential risk to the ecosystem and human health via oxidation stress and are considered emerging contaminants. Being stable with a lifetime of minutes or several months and abundant in transitional matrices (e.g. biochar), EPFRs continue to affect deposits (e.g. soil) and related media (plants) when the transitional matrices (e.g. biochar) are applied. The impact of EPFR on the plant uptake of chemical elements (CEs) was studied in the field conditions where, for two years, biochar and fertilisers were applied to the agricultural soil for winter triticale cultivation. EPFRs determination methods, along with the element uptake indices (bioaccumulation and biophilicity) and the method of the dynamic factors were applied. Results have shown that EPFRs have influenced the soil properties relevant to CE soil bioavailability and bioaccumulation in plants. The impact of EPFRs on CE transport in the soil–plant system was observed to influence the biogeochemical behaviour of CEs in the soil–plant system. This work provides the first findings on EPFRs-induces changes on CE bioavailability and bioaccumulation intensity, indicating the higher plant uptake risk of some potentially toxic elements (such as Cr). A high-performance and affordable peanut shell-derived biochar was employed for the efficient removal of Rhodamine B (RhB) from aqueous solutions. The properties of peanut shell biochar (PSB) were investigated through Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area measurements. The FTIR analysis revealed numerous active sites and functional groups for the binding of dye molecules, while the BET surface area was determined to be 351.11 m2g-1. Four different isotherms and kinetic models were applied to determine the equilibrium adsorption of RhB, and the results indicated that the Freundlich isotherm was the most appropriate model. A maximum dye removal rate of 94.0% occurred at a pH of 3 with an adsorbent dose of 0.325 g L−1. The prepared adsorbent showed excellent sorbent behaviour and can be reused multiple times after regeneration, with the surface area decreasing from 351.11 m2g-1 to 140.13 m2g-1 after the third cycle. The negative Gibbs free energy ΔGo at all applied temperatures suggested that spontaneous adsorption occurred and RhB adsorption on the PSB was found exothermic, as evidenced by the negative value of ΔHo. The regenerated PSB can be utilized as an efficient, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective sorbent for the removal of dyes at temperatures lower than ambient temperature, providing both technical and financial advantages for sustainable environmental management. Urban residential and industrial growth development affects sustainable and healthful indoor environments. Environmental issues are a global problem. The deterioration of indoor air quality has prompted the creation of several air cleansing techniques. This review explains how carbon-based materials have influenced the development of air purification systems using photocatalysis. These carbon-based materials offer unique properties and advantages in VOC removal processes. Biochar, produced from biomass pyrolysis, provides an environmentally sustainable solution with its porous structure and carbon-rich composition. Carbon quantum dots, with their quantum confinement effects and tunable surface properties, show promise in VOC sensing and removal applications. Polymers incorporating reduced graphene oxide demonstrate enhanced adsorption capabilities owing to the synergistic effects of graphene and polymer matrices. Activated carbon fibers, characterized by their high aspect ratio and interconnected porosity, provide efficient VOC removal with rapid kinetics. With their unique electronic and structural properties, graphitic carbon nitrides offer opportunities for photocatalytic degradation of VOCs under visible light. Catalysts integrated with MXene, a two-dimensional nanomaterial, exhibit enhanced catalytic activity for VOC oxidation reactions. Using various carbon-based materials in VOC removal showcases the versatility and effectiveness of carbon-based approaches in addressing environmental challenges associated with indoor air pollution. Metal-organic-framework materials are carbon-based compounds. It examines the correlation between VOC mineralization and specific characteristics of carbon materials, including surface area, adsorption capability, surface functional groups, and optoelectronic properties. Nitrogen-doped biochar as Fenton-like catalysts has been widely used to remove emerging pollutants in wastewater. However, the effect of in-situ and ex-situ nitrogen doping on the Fenton-like catalytic activity of biochar is unclear. In this study, the nitrogen-doped biochar was prepared by in-situ (NBC) and ex-situ (BC–N) nitrogen doping, and the Fenton-like catalytic activity of NBC and BC-N was compared for activating hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2), peroxydisulfate (PDS) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The results showed that NBC had higher Fenton-like catalytic activity than BC-N, because the formation of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) significantly increased the adsorption capacity to H 2 O 2 , PDS and PMS. NBC could activate H 2 O 2 , PDS and PMS for degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), but showed different catalytic activity and degradation mechanism. In the systems of NBC/H 2 O 2 and NBC/PDS, CQDs played a key role in the activation of H 2 O 2 and PDS, and surface-bound reactive species were mainly responsible for SMX degradation. In the system of NBC/PMS, NBC acted as both electron mediator and activator, direct electron transfer between PMS and SMX and surface-bound reactive species contributed to SMX degradation. Due to the bioavailability and movement of antimony in trophic web, the overexploitation of antimony mine resulted in antimony contamination that harmed the ecology nearby, raising concerns for public health. Whereas, most researches focused on the removal of antimony in the aqueous instead of the immobilization of antimony in the soil. Herein, the immobilized performance of biochar (BC) loaded with nano zero-valent iron (nZVI-BC) on antimony in the soil near the smelting area was researched through pot experiments for the first time, and its stabilization mechanism on antimony was investigated by valent state variation of antimony. The results demonstrated that BC restricted the cation exchange capacity and catalase activity in the soil, while nZVI-BC had a favorable and negative impact on two variables, respectively. The nZVI-BC showed more stable immobilization capacity on antimony over time than BC, whose exchangeable speciation only marginally rose (2%–6%), although the exchangeable speciation of antimony fell both from 15% to 2% after adding the BC and nZVI-BC, The electron attraction force between nZVI-BC and antimony was also intensified owing to the oxidation-reduction process, which was considered as the stabilizing principle of nZVI-BC on antimony in soil. Furthermore, the decreased bioaccumulation factor for the perennial ryegrass (0.46–0.21) and Galinsoga parviflora Cav. (0.26–0.17) stated that the BC effectively mitigated the bioaccumulation risk of antimony. Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride (OTC), a common antibiotic used to treat specific illnesses in humans and animals, is characterized by poor absorption into cells, low volatility, and high hydrophilicity. It is a potent contaminant that poses a serious threat to the ecosystem, particularly the aquatic sources. Adsorption onto natural adsorbents is one of the most successful, economical, and ecologically friendly ways to remove antibiotics from waste water. The present work focuses on the adsorption of OTC utilizing alginate biochar beads (AlBCB) and biochar powder (BC) derived from bagasse. The influence of several factors were studies and optimized through batch studies employing BC and AlBCB. After 50 min BC displayed a removal of 97%, at an initial concentration of 10 ppm. The experimental data was discovered to follow PFO kinetics and fit with the Freundlich isotherm adsorption model. AlBCB, after a contact time of 40 min, indicated a maximum percentage removal of 86% for initial concentration of 10 ppm OTC. Al-biochar beads showed the maximum percentage removal at pH 10. 0.5 g of adsorbent was used to carry out all batch experiments at room temperature. Advanced oxidation processes based on persulfate activation by biochar have been widely used to remove antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from wastewater. In this study, we used a common continuous fixed-bed reactor based on a biochar/persulfate system to treat wastewater. The average apparent ARG-removal efficiency was 82.38% in the biochar/persulfate reactor. The results of continuous reactor activity suggested the presence of ARG residues in the biochar (the abundance of ARG in the biochar increased 103-fold) and unstable removal of extracellular ARGs, raising concerns about a potential environmental burden. Kinetic experiments showed that the absolute abundance of intracellular ARGs (iARGs) rapidly decreased 98.3% within 30 min, but extracellular ARGs (eARGs) correspondingly increased 15-fold, suggesting that persulfate broke bacterial cells open and quickly released iARGs as eARGs. Moreover, the proportions of the three types of ARGs showed that ARG removal was attributed to about 70% degradation and 30% adsorption by the biochar/persulfate reactor. Further analysis revealed that biochar acts as a special shelter for ARGs. Release experiment of used biochar indicated that nearly half of absorbed ARGs could be released into new environment and causing potential risk. Overall, our findings provide a fundamental understanding of the fate of ARGs during treatment of antibiotic-contaminated wastewater and new insights into the multiple roles of biochar, which can potentially represent an additional burden on ecosystems and human health. The bioreduction of toxic chromium(VI) to sparingly soluble chromium(III) represents an environmentally friendly and cost-effective method for remediating Cr contamination. Usually, this bioreduction process is slow and requires the addition of quinone compounds as electron shuttles to enhance the reaction rate. However, the dissolved quinone compounds are susceptible to loss with water flow, thereby limiting their effectiveness. To address this challenge, this study loaded anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS), a typical quinone compound, onto biochar (BC) to create a novel solid-phase electron mediator (BC-AQDS) that can sustainably promote Cr(VI) bioreduction. The experimental results demonstrated that BC-AQDS significantly promoted the bioreduction of Cr(VI), where the reaction rate constant increased by 4.81 times, and the reduction extent increased by 38.31%. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy analysis revealed that AQDS replaced the –OH functional groups on the BC surface to form BC-AQDS. Upon receiving electrons from Shewanella putrefaciens CN32, BC-AQDS was reduced to BC-AH 2 DS, which subsequently facilitated the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). This redox cycle between BC-AQDS and BC-AH 2 DS effectively enhanced the bioreduction rate of Cr(VI). Our study also found that a lower carbonization temperature of BC resulted in a higher surface –OH functional group content, enabling a greater load of AQDS and a more pronounced enhancement effect on the bioreduction of Cr(VI). Additionally, a smaller particle size of BC and a higher dosage of BC-AQDS further contributed to the enhancement of Cr(VI) bioreduction. The preparation of BC-AQDS in this study effectively improve the utilization of quinone compounds and offer a promising approach for enhancing the bioreduction of Cr(VI). The application of organic fertilisers and biochar has become widespread in agroforestry ecosystems to enhance the yield and quality of crops and medicinal plants. However, their specific impact on both the yield and quality of Paris polyphylla (P. polyphylla) , along with the underlying mechanisms, remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the distinct effects of organic fertiliser (at concentrations of 5% and 10%) and biochar application (at levels of 2% and 4%) on P. polyphylla saponin content. This content is intricately regulated by available soil nutrients, enzyme activities, and microbial community compositions and activities. Our results clearly demonstrated a significant increase in the saponin content, including total saponin, polyphyllin I (PPI), polyphyllin II (PPII), polyphyllin VI (PPVI), and polyphyllin VII (PPVII), in P. polyphylla following the application of both biochar and organic fertiliser. Moreover, in comparison to the control group, the addition of biochar and organic fertiliser led to a considerable rise in the activity of glycosyltransferase enzyme (GTS) and cycloartenol synthase (CAS) in P. polyphylla. Additionally, it increased soil available potassium (AK) and soil organic matter (SOM) concentration, along with the activity of urease, acid phosphatase, and catalase, although biochar amendment resulted in a decrease in nitrate nitrogen (NO 3 −-N) concentration. Crucially, our findings revealed a positive correlation between total saponin content and the activity of CAS in P. polyphylla , soil AK, SOM concentration, and the activities of urease, acid phosphatase, and catalase. Conversely, there was a negative correlation with NO 3 −-N content. Furthermore, the application of organic fertiliser and biochar significantly influenced microbial community structures and specific microbial taxa. Notably, total saponin content exhibited a positive relationship with the relative abundances of Dehalococcoidia , Saccharomycetes, and Agaricomycetes taxa while showing a negative correlation with the abundance of Verrucomicrobiae. In conclusion, the observed increase in saponin content can be attributed to the modulation of specific microbial taxa in soils, as well as alterations in soil nutrients and enzyme activities resulting from the application of biochar and organic fertiliser. Global water pollution by various pollutants is becoming an urgent problem. The conversion of durian fruit waste into adsorbents can help to mitigate this issue. Transforming durian waste into adsorbents can reduce pollution risk from waste discharged directly into the environment, while also effectively eliminating existing contaminants. Here, this work explores the potential of durian fruit waste and supplies insights into the synthesis and application of durian fruit waste-derived adsorbents such as biosorbents, modified-biosorbents, biochars, activated carbons, and composites. Several factors affecting the adsorption process of pollutants and the mechanism how pollutants can be adsorbed onto durian fruit waste-derived adsorbents are elucidated. This review also analyzes some aspects of limitations and prospects of biosorbents derived from durian fruit waste. Coastal wetlands possess significant carbon storage capabilities. However, in coastal soil-plant systems augmented with biochar and microorganisms, the mechanisms of these amendments and carbon participation remain unclear. This study utilized pot experiments to explore how Enteromorpha prolifera biochar and Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) affect soil organic carbon (SOC), carbon-related microbes, photosynthetic and osmotic system of Suaeda salsa. The results showed biochar reduced exchangeable sodium percentage by 6.9% through adsorption and ion exchange, and increased SOC content by 34.4%. The abundance of carbon-related microorganisms (Bacteroidota and Chloroflexi) was increased and carbon metabolizing enzyme (cellulase and sucrase) activity in the soil was enhanced. AMF significantly improved plant growth compared with CK, as evidenced by the enhanced dry weight by 2.34 times. A partial least squares pathway model (PLS-PM) and correlation analysis suggested that the combined effect of biochar and AMF could be outlined as two pathways: soil and plant. Biochar increased SOC, improved the growth of soil carbon metabolizing microorganisms, and further promoted the activity of carbon-related enzymes. Additionally, AMF facilitated nutrient absorption by plants through root symbiosis, with biochar further enhancing this process by acting as a nutrient adsorber. These combined effects of biochar and AMF at soil and plant level enhanced the photosynthetic process of Suaeda salsa. A significant amount of effort has been devoted to the utilization of biochar-based catalysts in the treatment of wastewater. By virtue of its abundant functional groups and high specific surface area, biochar holds significant promise as a catalyst. This article presents a comprehensive systematic review and bibliometric analysis covering the period from 2009 to 2024, focusing on the restoration of wastewater through biochar catalysis. The production, activation, and functionalization techniques employed for biochar are thoroughly examined. In addition, the application of advanced technologies such as advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), catalytic reduction reactions, and biochemically driven processes based on biochar are discussed, with a focus on elucidating the underlying mechanisms and how surface functionalities influence the catalytic performance of biochar. Furthermore, the potential drawbacks of utilizing biochar are also brought to light. To emphasize the progress being made in this research field and provide valuable insights for future researchers, a scientometric analysis was conducted using CiteSpace and VOSviewer software on 595 articles. Hopefully, this review will enhance understanding of the catalytic performance and mechanisms pertaining to biochar-based catalysts in pollutant treatment while providing a perspective and guidelines for future research and development efforts in this area. Biosynthesized nanocomposites, particularly those incorporating carbon-based materials, exhibit exceptional tunability and multifunctionality, surpassing the capabilities of conventional materials in these aspects. Developing practical solutions is critical to address environmental toxins from pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, pesticides, and dyes. Biomass waste is a readily available carbon source, which emerges as a promising material for producing biochar due to its inherent advantages: abundance, low cost, and environmentally friendly nature. This distribution mainly uses carbon-based materials (CBMs) and biomass waste in wastewater treatment. This review paper investigates several CBM types, including carbon aerogels, nanotubes, graphene, and activated carbon. The detrimental effects of microplastics (MPs) on soil microbial and elemental raise significant environmental concerns. The potential of remediation with biochar to mitigate these negative impacts remains an open question. The remediation effects of biochar derived from corn and cotton straw on MPs concerning soil microorganisms and element cycling were investigated. Specifically, biochar induced substantial remediations in microbial community structure following MP exposure, restoring and fortifying the symbiotic network while exerting dominance over microbial community changes. A combined treatment of biochar and MPs exhibited a noteworthy increase in the abundance of NH 4 +, NO 3 −, and available phosphorous by 0.46–2.1 times, reversing the declining trend of dissolved organic carbon, showing a remarkable increase by 0.36 times. This combined treatment also led to a reduction in the abundance of the nitrogen fixation gene nifH by 0.46 times, while significantly increasing the expression of nitrification genes (amoA and amoB) and denitrification genes (nirS and nirK) by 22.5 times and 1.7 times, respectively. Additionally, the carbon cycle cbbLG gene showed a 2.3-fold increase, and the phosphorus cycle gene phoD increased by 0.1-fold. The mixed treatment enriched element-cycling microorganisms by 4.8–9.6 times. In summary, the addition of biochar repaired the negative effects of MPs in terms of microbial community dynamics, element content, gene expression, and functional microbiota. Effective dewatering is vital for both sludge treatment and resource recovery. This study focuses on converting post-anaerobic digested sludge into biochar to enhance sludge dewatering. The sludge-derived biochar is further modified with polyacrylamide (PAM-ADBC) and applied with sulfuric acid-modified montmorillonite (HMTS) for better performance. Significant advancements in dewatering were noted, even at reduced HMTS (0.1 g/g DS) and PAM-ADBC (25 g/kg DS) dosages. These improvements resulted in a remarkable 41.96% enhancement in capillary suction time (17.2 s) and a notable 20.26% reduction in moisture content (66.33%), respectively, all while maintaining a stable pH level. HMTS, with leached cations, improved dewatering by decomposing the extracellular polymeric substance structure through electro-neutralization to release the internal bound water within sludge flocs. Simultaneously, PAM-ADBC coagulated decomposed sludge particles into larger flocs to form a skeletal structure with itself to discharge internal water in compression dewatering. This study presents the successful synthesis of Magnesium-aluminum layered double hydroxide composite phosphate-modified hydrothermal biochar for efficient removal of U(VI) from aqueous solutions. A novel synthesis approach involving phosphate thermal polymerization-hydrothermal method was employed, deviating from conventional pyrolysis methods, to produce hydrothermal biochar. The combination of solvent thermal polymerization technique with hydrothermal process facilitated efficient loading of layered double hydroxide (LDH) components onto the biochar surface, ensuring simplicity, low energy consumption and enhanced modifiability. Bamboo waste was utilized as the precursor for biochar, highlighting its superior green and sustainable characteristics. Additionally, this study elucidated the interactions between phosphate-modified hydrothermal biochar and LDH components with U(VI). Physicochemical analysis demonstrated that the composite biochar possessed a high surface area and abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. XPS and FTIR analyses confirmed the efficient adsorption of U(VI), attributed to chelation interactions between phosphate groups, magnesium hydroxyl groups, hydroxyl groups and U(VI), as well as the co-precipitation of U(VI) with multi-hydroxyl aluminum cations captured by LDH. The composite biochar reached adsorption equilibrium with U(VI) within 80 min and exhibited excellent fitting to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. Under conditions of pH = 4 and 298 K, it displayed significantly high maximum adsorption capacity of approximately 388.81 mg g⁻1, surpassing untreated biochar by 17-fold. The adsorption process was found to be endothermic and spontaneous and even after five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, the removal efficiency of U(VI) remained stable at 75.46%. Feedstock characteristics impact biochar physicochemical properties, and reproducible biochar properties are essential for any potential application. However, in most articles, feedstock aspects (i.e., taxonomic name of the species, part of the plant, and phenological phase) are scarcely reported. This research aimed at studying the effect of species and phenological stage of the feedstock on the properties of the derived biochars and, thus, adsorption capacities in water treatment. In this study, we analysed the anatomical characteristics of three different woody bamboo species [ Guadua chacoensis (GC) , Phyllostachys aurea (PA) , and Bambusa tuldoides (BT)] in culms harvested at two different phenological phases (young and mature), and statistically correlated them with the characteristics of the six derived biochars, including their adsorption performance in aqueous media. Sclerenchyma fibres and parenchyma cells diameter and cell-wall width significantly differed among species. Additionally, sclerenchyma fibres and parenchyma cell-wall width as well as sclerenchyma fibre cell diameters are dependent on the phenological phase of the culms. Consequently, differences in biochar characteristics (i.e., yield and average pore diameter) were also observed, leading to differential methylene blue (MB) adsorption capacities between individuals at different phenological phases. MB adsorption capacities were higher for biochar produced from young culms compared to those obtained from matures ones (i.e., GC: 628.66 vs. 507.79; BT: 537.45 vs. 477.53; PA: 477.52 vs. 462.82 mg/g), which had smaller cell wall widths leading to a lower percentage of biochar yield. The simultaneous removal of anionic and cationic heavy metals presents a challenge for adsorbents. In this study, acetate (Ac-) was utilized as the intercalating anion for layered double hydroxide (LDH) to prepare a novel biochar composite adsorbent (Ac-LB) designed for the adsorption of Pb(II), Cu(II), and As(V). By utilizing Ac- as the intercalating anion, the interlayer space of the LDH was enlarged from 0.803 nm to 0.869 nm, exposing more adsorption sites for the LDH and enhancing the affinity for heavy metals. The results of the adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption effect of Ac-LB on heavy metals was significantly improved compared to the original FeMg-LDH modified biochar composites (LB), and the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II), Cu(II), and As(V) were 402.70, 68.50, and 21.68 mg/g, respectively. Wastewater simulation tests further confirmed the promising application of Ac-LB for heavy metal adsorption. The analysis of the adsorption mechanism revealed that surface complexation, electrostatic adsorption, and chemical deposition were the main mechanisms of action between heavy metals (Pb(II) and Cu(II)) and Ac-LB. Additionally, Cu(II) ions underwent a homogeneous substitution reaction with Ac-LB. The adsorption process of As(V) by Ac-LB mainly relied on complexation and ion-exchange reactions. Anaerobic digestion of floated paperboard sludge (PS) cake suffers from volatile fatty acids (VFAs) accumulation, nutrient unbalanced condition, and generation of digestate with a risk of secondary pollution. To overcome these drawbacks, sewage sludge (SS) was added to PS cake for biogas recovery improvement under a co-digestion process followed by the thermal treatment of solid fraction of digestate for biochar production. Batch experimental assays were conducted at different SS:PS mixing ratios of 70:30, 50:50, 30:70, and 20:80 (w/w), and their anaerobic co-digestion performances were compared to the mono-digestion systems at 35 ± 0.2 °C for 45 days. The highest methane yield (MY) of 241.68 ± 14.81 mL/g COD removed was obtained at the optimum SS:PS ratio of 50:50 (w/w). This experimental condition was accompanied by protein, carbohydrate, and VFA conversion efficiencies of 47.3 ± 3.2%, 46.8 ± 3.2%, and 56.3 ± 3.8%, respectively. The synergistic effect of SS and PS cake encouraged the dominance of Bacteroidota (23.19%), Proteobacteria (49.65%), Patescibacteria (8.12%), and Acidovorax (12.60%) responsible for hydrolyzing the complex organic compounds and converting the VFAs into biomethane. Further, the solid fraction of digestate was subjected to thermal treatment at a temperature of 500 °C for 2.0 h, under an oxygen-limited condition. The obtained biochar had a yield of 0.48 g/g dry digestate, and its oxygen-to-carbon (O/C), carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N), and carbon-to-phosphorous (C/P) ratios were 0.55, 10.23, and 16.42, respectively. A combined anaerobic co-digestion/pyrolysis system (capacity 50 m3/d) was designed based on the COD mass balance experimental data and biogenic CO 2 market price of 22 USD/ton. This project could earn profits from biogas (12,565 USD/yr), biochar (6641 USD/yr), carbon credit (8014 USD/yr), and COD shadow price (6932 USD/yr). The proposed project could maintain a payback period of 6.60 yr. The enrichment of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) in aquatic systems can cause eutrophication. Moreover, P rocks may become exhausted in the next 100 years. A slow-release fertilizer called struvite (MgNH 4 PO 4.6H 2 O) can reduce surface runoff. However, the high cost of raw material or chemicals is a bottleneck in their economical production. Therefore, incinerated sewage sludge ash, food wastewater, and bittern were combined as the sources of P, N, and Mg, respectively. Sawdust biochar was used to enhance the adsorptive recovery of nutrients. First, recovery kinetics was studied by comparing bittern-impregnated biochar (BtB) with the Mg-impregnated biochar (MgB). Subsequently, the synergistic physical and chemical interactions were observed for P and N recovery. Almost complete PO 4 3–P recoveries were achieved within 10 min for both biochars. However, NH 4 +-N recovery was stable after 2 h, with 26% recovery by MgB and 20% recovery by BtB. Biochars activated with steam (steam-activated biochar) and KOH (KOH-activated biochar) gave superior activities to those of unactivated biochars and activated carbon (AC) nutrient recovery and struvite purity. Moreover, the activated biochars showed a lower risk of surface runoff, similar to that of AC. Therefore, activated biochars can be used as an alternative to AC for economical struvite production from a combination of wastewater sources. The safety and health of aquatic organisms and humans are threatened by the increasing presence of pollutants in the environment. Endocrine disrupting chemicals are common pollutants which affect the function of endocrine and causes adverse effects on human health. These chemicals can disrupt metabolic processes by interacting with hormone receptors upon consumptions by humans or aquatic species. Several studies have reported the presence of endocrine disrupting chemicals in waterbodies, food, air and soil. These chemicals are associated with increasing occurrence of obesity, metabolic disorders, reproductive abnormalities, autism, cancer, epigenetic variation and cardiovascular risk. Conventional treatment processes are expensive, not environment friendly and unable to achieve complete removal of these harmful chemicals. In recent years, biochar from different sources has gained a considerable interest due to their adsorption efficiency with porous structure and large surface areas. biochar derived from lignocellulosic biomass are widely used as sustainable catalysts in soil remediation, carbon sequestration, removal of organic and inorganic pollutants and wastewater treatment. Nuclear energy is playing an increasingly important role on the earth, but the nuclear plants leaves a legacy of radioactive waste pollution, especially uranium-containing pollution. Straw biochar with wide sources, large output, low cost, and easy availability, has emerged as a promising material for uranium extraction from radioactive wastewater, but the natural biomass with suboptimal structure and low content of functional groups limits the efficiency. The widespread and inevitable use of plastic has led to prospective ecological problems through Bisphenol A (BPA), a synthetic chemical in plastic manufacturing. The present study addresses a unique methodology for eliminating BPA using the assistance of Pseudomonas putida. In the present work, biomass was torrefied to generate biochar with highly porous networks that could accommodate the bacterial species for effective colonization and multiplication. The designed biochar-bacterial globules demonstrated the ability to effectively remove BPA (96.88%) at a concentration of up to 2 g/L. The biochar-bacterial globules could effectively adsorb BPA at a low concentration of 20 mg/L. The alteration in pH did not impact the globule's performance, providing additional support for the practical utilization of these globules in polluted water bodies. In addition, the biochar-bacterial globules exhibited superior effectiveness in degradation compared to the standard levels, particularly in saline conditions. The simplicity and effectiveness of the approach make it promising for real-world implementation in addressing ecological problems associated with BPA contamination. CuCoFe-LDO/BCD was successfully synthesized from CuCoFe-LDH and biochar derived from durian shell (BCD). Ciprofloxacin (CFX) degraded more than 95% mainly by O 2 •− and 1O 2 in CuCoFe-LDO/BCD(2/1)/PMS system within 10 min with a rate constant of 0.255 min−1, which was 14.35 and 2.66 times higher than those in BCD/PMS and CuCoFe-LDO/PMS systems, respectively. The catalytic system exhibited good performance over a wide pH range (3–9) and high degradation efficiency of other antibiotics. Built-in electric field (BIEF) driven by large difference in the work function/Fermi level ratio between CuCoFe-LDO and BCD accelerated continuous electron transfer from CuCoFe-LDO to BCD to result in two different microenvironments with opposite charges at the interface, which enhanced PMS adsorption and activation via different directions. As a non-radical, 1O 2 was mainly generated via PMS activation by C=O in BCD. The presence of C=O in BCD resulted in an increase in atomic charge of C in C=O and redistributed the charge density of other C atoms. As a result, strong adsorption of PMS at C atom in C=O and other C with a high positive charge was favorable for 1O 2 generation, whereas an enhanced adsorption of PMS at negatively charged C accounted for the generation of •OH and SO 4 •−. After adsorption, electrons in C of BCD became deficient and were fulfilled with those transferred from CuCoFe-LDO driven by BIEF, which ensured the high catalytic activity of CuCoFe-LDO/BCD. O 2 •−, on the other hand, was generated via several pathways that involved in the transformation of •OH and SO 4 •− originated from PMS activation by the transition of metal species in CuCoFe-LDO and negatively charged C in BCD. This study proposed a new idea of fabricating a low-cost metal-LDH and biomass-derived catalyst with a strong synergistic effect induced by BIEF for enhancing PMS activation and antibiotic degradation. Oil sands process affected water (OSPW) is produced during bitumen extraction and typically contains high concentrations of trace metals. Constructed wetlands have emerged as a cost effective and green technology for the treatment of metals in wastewaters. Whether the addition of amendments to constructed wetlands can improve metal removal efficiency is unknown. We investigated the synergistic effects of carbon based amendments and wetland plant species in removal of arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, nickel, and selenium from OSPW. Three native wetland species (Carex aquatilis , Juncus balticus , Scirpus validus) and two amendments (canola straw biochar, nano humus) were investigated in constructed wetland mesocosms over 60 days. Amendment effect on metal removal efficiency was not significant, while plant species effect was. Phytoremediation resulted in removal efficiencies of 78.61–96.31 % for arsenic, cadmium, and cobalt. Carex aquatilis had the highest removal efficiencies for all metals. Amendments alone performed well in removing some metals and were comparable to phytoremediation for cadmium, cobalt, copper, and nickel. Metals were primarily distributed in roots with negligible translocation to shoots. Our work provides insights into the role of plants and amendments during metal remediation and their complex interactions in constructed treatment wetlands. The ecological risks of sewage sludge biochar (SSB) after land use is still not truly reflected. Herein, the ecological risks of SSB prepared at different temperature were investigated using the earthworm E. fetida as a model organism from the perspectives of organismal, tissue, cellular, and molecular level. The findings revealed that the ecological risk associated with low-temperature SSB (SSB 300) was more pronounced compared to medium- and high-temperature SSB (SSB 500 and SSB 700), and the ecological risk intensified with increasing SSB addition rates, as revealed by an increase in the integrated biomarker response v2 (IBRv2) value by 2.59–25.41 compared to those of SSB 500 and SSB 700. Among them, 10% SSB 300 application caused significant oxidative stress and neurotoxicity in earthworms compared to CK (p < 0.001). The weight growth rate and cocoon production rate of earthworms were observed to decrease by 25.06% and 69.29%, respectively, while the mortality rate exhibited a significant increase of 33.34% following a 10% SSB 300 application, as compared to the CK. Moreover, 10% SSB 300 application also resulted in extensive stratum corneum injury and significant longitudinal muscle damage in earthworms, while also inducing severe collapse of intestinal epithelial cells and disruption of intestinal integrity. In addition, 10% SSB 300 caused abnormal expression of earthworm detoxification and cocoon production genes (p < 0.001). These results may improve our understanding of the ecotoxicity of biochar, especially in the long term application, and contribute to providing the guidelines for applying biochar as a soil amendment. The aim of the present study was to find environmentally friendly solutions for the disposal of problematic and toxic textile sludge (TS) by producing textile sludge biochar (TSB) by pyrolysis and evaluating its chemical properties, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) content, heavy metals (HMs) speciation, environmental risks, and effects on seed germination. Pyrolysis of TS at temperatures ranging from 300 to 700 °C significantly reduced (85–95%) or eliminated certain PAHs in the biochar, enriched heavy metal content within land use limits, and increased bioavailability of HMs in biochar produced at 300 °C and decreased leaching capacity of HMs in biochar produced at 700 °C. The speciation of HMs and their bioavailability during pyrolysis processes was strongly temperature dependent, with lower temperatures increasing the toxic and bioavailable forms of Zn and Ni, while higher temperatures converted the bioavailable Ni to a more stable form, while Cu, Cr, and Pb were transformed from stable to toxic and bioavailable forms. The ecological risk index (RI) values of TSB-300 and TSB-700 are below the threshold value of 150, indicating a low-risk level, and the risk level decreases at temperatures above 500 °C. Further, the extracts of TSB-300 and TSB-700 had the highest percentage of germinating seeds, while the extracts of TS and TSB-500 inhibited seed germination by 20–30% compared to the control. These results indicate that pyrolysis effectively reduces PAHs and binds leachable HMs in biochar, however, the specific pyrolysis temperature influences metal speciation, bioavailability, seed germination, and environmental risk. Removal of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) from water matrices is crucial owing to its pervasiveness and adverse ecological and human health effects. This study investigates the adsorptive removal of PFOA using magnetic biochar (MBC) derived from FeCl 3 -treated peanut husk at different temperatures (300, 600, and 900 °C). Preliminary experiments demonstrated that MBC 600 exhibited superior performance, with its characterization confirming the presence of γ-Fe 2 O 3. However, efficient PFOA removal from water matrices depends on determining the optimum combination of inputs in the treatment approaches. Therefore, optimization and predictive modeling of the PFOA adsorption were investigated using the response surface methodology (RSM) and the artificial intelligence (AI) models, respectively. The central composite design (CCD) of RSM was employed as the design matrix. Further, three AI models, viz. artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine (SVM), and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) were selected to predict PFOA adsorption. The RSM-CCD model applied to optimize three input process parameters, namely, adsorbent dose (100–400 mg/L), pH (3–10), and contact time (20–60 min), showed a statistically significant (p < 0.05) effect on PFOA removal. Maximum PFOA removal of about 98.3% was attained at the optimized conditions: adsorbent dose: 400 mg/L, pH: 3.4, and contact time: 60 min. Non-linear analysis showed PFOA adsorption was best fitted by pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 = 0.9997). PFOA adsorption followed Freundlich isotherm (R2 = 0.9951) with a maximum adsorption capacity of ∼307 mg/g. Thermodynamics and spectroscopic analyses revealed that PFOA adsorption is a spontaneous, exothermic, and physical phenomenon, with electrostatic interaction, hydrophobic interaction, and hydrogen bonding governing the process. A comparative analysis of the statistical and AI models for PFOA adsorption demonstrated high R2 (>0.99) for RSM-CCD, ANN, and ANFIS. Heavy metal contamination poses a significant threat to soil quality, plant growth, and food safety, and directly affects multiple UN SDGs. Addressing this issue and offering a remediation solution are vital for human health. One effective approach for immobilizing heavy metals involves impregnating cypress chips with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH) 2) to enhance the chemical adsorption capacity of the resulting woody charcoal. In the present study, un-treated cypress biochar (UCBC) and calcium-treated cypress biochar (TCBC), were introduced into pristine and contaminated soil, at rates of 3, 6, and 9% (w/w). Both BCs were alkaline (UCBC pH: 8.9, TCBC pH: 9.7) with high specific surface area, which improved the soil properties (pH, EC, and OM). Radish (Raphanus sativus) cultivated in pots revealed that both UCBC and TCBC demonstrated significant improvements in growth attributes and heavy metal immobilization compared to the control, with TCBC exhibiting superior effects. The TCBC surface showed highly active nanosized precipitated calcium carbonate particles that were active in immobilizing heavy metals. The application of TCBC at a rate of 9% resulted in a substantial reduction in Zn and Cu uptake by radish roots and shoots. In contaminated soil, Zn uptake by radish roots decreased by 55% (68.3–31.0 mg kg−1), and shoots by 37% (49.3–31.0 mg kg−1); Cu uptake decreased by 40% (38.6–23.2 mg kg−1) in roots and 39% (58.2–35.2 mg kg−1) in shoots. Uptake of Pb was undetectable after TCBC application. As an effort to tackle some of the most pressing ecological issues we are currently experiencing, there has been an increasing interest in employing biomass-derived char products in various disciplines. Thermal combustion of biomass results in biochar production, which is a remarkably rich source of carbon. Not only does the biochar obtained by the thermochemical breakdown of biomass lower the quantity of carbon released into the environment, but it also serves as an eco-friendly substitute for activated carbon (AC) and further carbon-containing products. An overview of using biochar to remove toxic pollutants is the main subject of this article. Several techniques for producing biochar have been explored. The most popular processes for producing biochar are hydrothermal carbonization, gasification and pyrolysis. Carbonaceous materials, alkali, acid and steam are all capable of altering biochar. Depending on the environmental domains of applications, several modification techniques are chosen. The current findings on characterization and potential applications of biochar are compiled in this survey. Comprehensive discussion is given on the fundamentals regarding the formation of biochar. Enhancing the kinetic performance of thick electrodes is essential for improving the efficiency of lithium extraction processes. Biochar, known for its affordability and unique three-dimensional (3D) structure, is utilized across various applications. In this study, we developed a biochar-based, 3D-conductive network thick electrode (∼20 mg cm−2) by in-situ deposition of LiFePO 4 (LFP) onto watermelon peel biomass (WB). Utilizing Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations complemented by experimental data, we confirmed that this The thick electrode exhibits outstanding kinetic properties and a high capacity for lithium intercalation in brines, even in environments where the Magnesia-lithium ratios are significantly high. The electrode showed an impressive intercalation capacity of 30.67 mg g−1 within 10 min in a pure lithium solution. It also maintained high intercalation performance (31.17 mg g−1) in simulated brines with high Magnesia-lithium ratios. Moreover, in actual brine, it demonstrated a significant extraction capacity (23.87 mg g−1), effectively lowering the Magnesia-lithium ratio from 65 to 0.50. This breakthrough in high-conductivity thick electrode design offers new perspectives for lithium extraction technologies. The watermelon peel serves as the substrate, simultaneously supporting the in-situ loading of LFP, thereby forming an LFP/WB thick electrode exhibits high lithium absorption capacity and excellent kinetic performance in high Mg2+/Li+ ratio brine. It achieved an impressive absorption rate of 30.67 mg g−1·min−1 in 10 min and an average lithium extraction of 23.87 mg g−1 from salt lake brine. Soil salinization and sodication harm soil fertility and crop production, especially in dry regions. To combat this, using biochar combined with gypsum, lime, and farm manure is a promising solution for improving salt-affected soils. In a pot experiment, cotton stick biochar (BC) was applied at a rate of 20 t/ha in combination with gypsum (G), lime (L), and farm manure (F) at rates of 5 and 10 t/ha. These were denoted as BCG-5, BCL-5, BCF-5, BCG-10, BCL-10, and BCF-10. Three different types of soils with electrical conductivity (EC) to sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) ratios of 2.45:13.7, 9.45:22, and 11.56:40 were used for experimentation. The application of BCG-10 led to significant improvements in rice biomass, chlorophyll content, and overall growth. It was observed that applying BCG-10 to soils increased the membrane stability index by 75% in EC:SAR (2.45:13.7), 97% in EC:SAR (9.45:22), and 40% in EC:SAR (11.56:40) compared to respective control treatments. After BCG-10 was applied, the hydrogen peroxide in leaves dropped by 29%, 23%, and 21% in EC:SAR (2.45:13.7), EC:SAR (9.45:22), and EC:SAR (11.56:40) soils, relative to their controls, respectively. The application of BCG-10 resulted in glycine betaine increases of 60, 119, and 165% in EC: SAR (2.45:13.7), EC: SAR (9.45:22), and EC: SAR (11.56:40) soils. EC: SAR (2.45:13.7), EC: SAR (9.45:22), and EC: SAR (11.56:40) soils all had 70, 109, and 130% more ascorbic acid in BCG-10 applied treatment, respectively. Lignocellulosic waste generation and their improper disposal has accelerated the problems associated with increased greenhouse gas emissions and associated environmental pollution. Constructive ways to manage and mitigate the pollution associated with lignocellulosic waste has propelled the research on biochar production using lignocellulose-based substrates. The sustainability of various biochar production technologies in employing lignocellulosic biomass as feedstock for biochar production not only aids in the lignocellulosic biomass valorization but also helps in carbon neutralization and carbon utilization. Functionalization of biochar through various physicochemical methods helps in improving their functional properties majorly by reducing the size of the biochar particles to nanoscale and modifying their surface properties. Biochar is a carbon-rich material produced from the partial combustion of different biomass residues. It can be used as a promising material for adsorbing pollutants from soil and water and promoting environmental sustainability. Extensive research has been conducted on biochars prepared from different feedstocks used for pollutant removal. However, a comprehensive review of biochar derived from non-woody feedstocks (NWF) and its physiochemical attributes, adsorption capacities, and performance in removing heavy metals, antibiotics, and organic pollutants from water systems needs to be included. This review revealed that the biochars derived from NWF and their adsorption efficiency varied greatly according to pyrolysis temperatures. However, biochars (NWF) pyrolyzed at higher temperatures (400–800 °C) manifested excellent physiochemical and structural attributes as well as significant removal effectiveness against antibiotics, heavy metals, and organic compounds from contaminated water. This review further highlighted why biochars prepared from NWF are most valuable/beneficial for water treatment. The use of Sargassum spp., a brown invasive algae, for the production of biochars (BCs) or activated carbons (ACs) and their efficiency to sequestrate chlordecone (CLD) in soil has been recently suggested. The objective of this study was to assess the potential of microwave prepared Sargasso biochar (BCS) amendment in Andosol on the bioavailability of chlordecone in laying hens and piglets, when exposed to this matrix. The efficiency of BCS was compared to a commercial activated carbon, DARCO® (ACD), used as a positive control and to an unamended soil. Samples of CLD-contaminated Andosol were amended with 2% of each carbonaceous matrix and let maturing for 3 months. Thereafter, adequate doses of soil were administered into the laying hens and piglets diets every day during the exposure phase, to simulate involuntary soil ingestion which may happen in practical conditions when animals are reared outside. Finally, bioavailability tests were carried out on target tissue (liver, muscle, adipose tissues and egg yolk). The results showed that the highest reduction of CLD bioavailability was obtained with ACD in both animal species. For laying hens, ACD showed reductions of around 60% (liver: 59%, muscle: 57% and egg yolk: 56%) whereas the BCS showed reduction of around 30% (liver: 31%, muscle: 26% and egg yolk: 30%) compared to the unamended soil. For piglets, only the liver showed interpretable results with reduction of 65% with ACD and 41% with BCS. Overall, BCS is efficient reducing CLD availability but in a lower extend than ACD. This discrepancy may be explained by the variations of physico-chemical characteristics that exist between the two matrices, resulting, from the additional activation phase for DARCO®. Therefore, to improve the efficiency of BCS it would be interesting to move towards DARCO® characteristics by determining out the optimal microwave pyrolysis parameters. This study critically appraises employing chitosan as a composite with bentonite, biochar, or both materials as an alternative to conventional barrier materials. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to identify the studies reporting chitosan-bentonite composite (CBC), chitosan amended biochar (CAB), and chitosan-bentonite-biochar composite (CBBC) for effective removal of various contaminants. The study aims to review the synthesis of these composites, identify fundamental properties affecting their adsorption capacities, and examine how these properties affect or enhance the removal abilities of other materials within the composite. Notably, CBC composites have the advantage of adsorbing both cationic and anionic species, such as heavy metals and dyes, due to the cationic nature of chitosan and the anionic nature of montmorillonite, along with the increased accessible surface area due to the clay. CAB composites have the unique advantage of being low-cost sorbents with high specific surface area, affinity for a wide range of contaminants owing to the high surface area and microporosity of biochar, and abundant available functional groups from the chitosan. Limited studies have reported the utilization of CBBC composites to remove various contaminants. These composites can be prepared by combining the steps employed in preparing CBC and CAB composites. They can benefit from the favorable adsorption properties of all three materials while also satisfying the mechanical requirements of a barrier material. Acinetobacter sp. AL-6 combining with biochar was adapted in activated sludge (AS & co-system) to decontaminate Mn2+, Fe2+ and NH 4 +-N, and treat activated sludge (AS) for its activity and settling performance improvement. Specifically, the co-system promoted the growth of bacteria in the activated sludge, thus increasing its ability to nitrify and adsorb Mn2+ and Fe2+, resulting in the removal of high concentrations of NH 4 +-N, Mn2+, Fe2+ and COD in the reactor by 100%, 100%, 100%, and 96.8%, respectively. And the pH of wastewater was increased from 4 to 8.5 by co-system also facilitated the precipitation of Mn2+ and Fe2+. The MLVSS/MLSS ratio increased from 0.64 to 0.95 and SVI 30 decreased from 92.54 to 1.54 after the addition of co-system, which indicated that biochar helped to improve the activity and settling performance of activated sludge and prevented it from being damaged by the compound Mn2+ and Fe2+. In addition, biochar promoted the increase of the tyrosine-like protein substance and humic acid-like organic matter in the sludge EPS, thus enhanced the ability of sludge to adsorb Mn2+ and Fe2+. Concretely, compared with AS group, the proteins content and polysaccharides content of the AS & co-system group were increased by 13.14 times and 6.30 times respectively. Further, microbial diversity analysis showed that more resistant bacteria and dominant bacteria Acinetobacter sp. AL-6 in sludge enhanced the nitrification and adsorption of manganese and iron under the promotion of biochar. The study explores the synthesis and utilization of biochar (BC) and multi-layer MXene to MXene/biochar (MB) composites for wastewater treatment. Simultaneously, it also investigates their energy generation potential through biomass and soil property assessments. The integrated column and batch treatments have shown significant results, elevating total dissolved solids from 63.7 to 125.5 mg L−1 with column treatment, while reducing them to 6.37 % and 1.35 % with BC and MB treatment, respectively. BC with high carbon content, demonstrated increased hydrophobicity, which was amplified by the integration of MXene, thereby enhancing its potential for advanced wastewater treatment. Treated wastewater exhibited elevated nutrient concentrations (Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Na, and NH 4 +), promoting the growth of Pennisetum purpureum. WW_B shows promising energy potential, with a higher heating value of 25.03 MJ kg−1 and a lower heating value of 23.57 MJ kg−1. They demonstrated high volatile matter exceeding 70.9 wt %, and a fixed carbon from 10.02 to 27.53 wt %, signifying their potential for efficient conversion and bio-oil yield during pyrolysis. The ultimate analysis emphasized significant carbon, with oxygen content ranging from 43.42 to 47.78 wt %., influencing combustion characteristics. MT_B exhibited its suitability for energy production through thermochemical conversion, underlined by its high flammability and low volatile ignition values. In the absence of BC, the E a ranged from 24.77 to 77.88 kJ mol−1 in wastewater and from 21.67 to 69.6 kJ mol−1 in MB treated wastewater. Meanwhile, when soil contained BC and was irrigated with wastewater, the E a varied from 24.66 to 80.91 kJ mol−1. In the case of MB treated wastewater, it ranged from 25.01 to 75.79 kJ mol−1. Steel mill wastewater sludge, as an iron-enriched solid waste, was expected to be converted into iron-enriched biochar with acceptable environmental risk by pyrolysis. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the chemical speciation transformation of heavy metals in biochar under various pyrolysis temperatures and its reutilization for tetracycline (TC) removal. The experimental data indicated that pyrolysis temperature was a key factor affecting the heavy metals speciation and bioavailability in biochar, and biochar with pyrolysis temperature at 450 °C was the most feasible for reutilization without potential risk. The endogenous iron-enriched biochar (FSB450) showed highly efficient adsorption towards TC, and its maximum adsorption capacity could reach 240.38 mg g−1, which should be attributed to its excellent mesoporous structure, abundant functional groups and endogenous iron cycling. The endogenous iron was converted to a stable iron oxide crystalline phase (Fe 3 O 4 and MgFe 2 O 4) by pyrolysis, which underwent a valence transition to form a coordination complex with TC by electron shuttling in the FSB450 matrix. The study provides a win-win approach for resource utilization of steel wastewater sludge and treatment of antibiotic contamination in wastewater. Industrialization has caused a significant global issue with cadmium (Cd) pollution. In this study, Biochar (Bc), generated through initial pyrolysis of rice straw, underwent thorough mixing with magnetized bentonite clay, followed by activation with KOH and subsequent pyrolysis. Consequently, a magnetized bentonite modified rice straw biochar (Fe 3 O 4 @B-Bc) was successfully synthesized for effective treatment and remediation of this problem. Fe 3 O 4 @B-Bc not only overcomes the challenges associated with the difficult separation of individual bentonite or biochar from water, but also exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of Cd(II) up to 241.52 mg g−1. The characterization of Fe 3 O 4 @B-Bc revealed that its surface was rich in C, O and Fe functional groups, which enable efficient adsorption. The quantitative calculation of the contribution to the adsorption mechanism indicates that cation exchange and physical adsorption accounted for 65.87% of the total adsorption capacity. In conclusion, Fe 3 O 4 @B-Bc can be considered a low-cost and recyclable green adsorbent, with broad potential for treating cadmium-polluted water. The presence of arsenic in groundwater, and through this in drinking water, has been shown to present a serious risk to public health in many regions of the world. In this study, two iron-rich carbonous adsorbents were compared for the removal of arsenate (As(V)) from groundwater. Biochars (FeO-biochar and FeO-pyrochar) derived from biomass waste were functionalised in two different ways with iron chloride for comparation. Batch and dynamic parameters were optimised to achieve >99% As(V) removal efficiency. Experimental data were best described by the pseudo-second order kinetic model, while multi-stage diffusion appeared to limit mass transfer of As(V). Among the isotherm models evaluated, the Freundlich model best described the experimental results with high correlation coefficients (R 2 ≥ 0.94) for both adsorbents. Monolayer adsorption capacities were found to be 4.34 mg/g and 8.66 mg/g for FeO-biochar and FeO-pyrochar, respectively. Batch studies followed by instrumental characterisation of the materials indicated the removal mechanisms involved to be electrostatic interactions (outer-sphere), OH− ligand exchange (inner-sphere complexation) and hydrogen bonding with functional groups. Higher pH pzc (9.1), S BET (167.2 m2/g), and iron/elemental content for the FeO-pyrochar (compared with the FeO-biochar) suggested that both surface chemistry and porosity/surface area were important in adsorption. Dynamic studies showed FeO-pyrochar can be used to remove As(V) from groundwater even at low 'environmental' concentrations relevant to legislative limits (<10 μg/L), whereby 7 g of FeO-pyrochar was able to treat 5.4 L groundwater. Biochar modification is an effective approach to enhance its ability to promote anaerobic digestion (AD). Focusing on the physical properties of biochar, the impact of different particle sizes of biochar on AD of food waste (FW) at high organic loading rate (OLR) was investigated. Four biochar with different sizes (40-200 mesh) were prepared and used in AD systems at OLR 30 g VS/L. The research results found that biochar with a volume particle size of 102 μm (RBC-P140) had top-performance in promoting cumulative methane production, increasing by 13.20% compared to the control group. The analysis results of the variety in volatile acids and alkalinity in the system did not show a correlation with the size of biochar, but small size has the potential to improve the environmental tolerance of the system to high acidity. Microbial community analysis showed that the abundance of aceticlastic methanogen and the composition of zoogloea were optimized through relatively small-sized biochar. Granular activated carbon (GAC) and ion exchange resin (IXR) are widely used as adsorbents to remove PFAS from drinking water sources and effluent waste streams. However, the high cost associated with GAC and IXR generation has motivated the development of less expensive adsorbents for treatment of PFAS-impacted water. Thus, the objective of this research was to create an economically viable and sustainable PFAS adsorbent from sewage sludge. Stepwise pyrolysis at temperatures from 300 °C to 1000 °C yielded biochars whose specific surface area (SSA) and porosity increased from 41 to 148 m 2 /g, and from 0.062 to 0.193 cm 3 /g, respectively. On a per organic char basis, the SSA of the biochar was as high as 1183 m 2 /g, which is comparable to commercially-available activated carbons. The adsorption of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) on sludge biochar increased with increasing pyrolysis temperature, which was positively correlated with increasing porosity and SSA. When 1000 °C processed biochar was tested with a mixture of eight PFAS, preferential adsorption of longer carbon chain-length species was observed, indicating the importance of PFAS hydrophobic interactions with the biochar and the availability of a wide range of mesopores. The adsorption of each PFAS was dependent upon both chain length and head group, with longer chain-length species exhibiting greater adsorption than shorter chain-length species, along with greater adsorption of species with sulfonic acid head groups compared to their chain length counterparts with carboxylic acid head groups. These findings demonstrate that biochar derived from municipal solid waste can serve as a cost-effective and sustainable adsorbent for the removal of PFOS and PFAS mixtures from source waters. Stormwater pollution is a key factor contributing to water quality degradation, posing substantial environmental and human health risks. Although stormwater retention ponds, also referred to as wet ponds, are commonly implemented to alleviate stormwater challenges by reducing peak flow and removing suspended solids, their effectiveness in removing heavy metals and nutrients is limited. This study evaluated the performance of floating treatment platforms (FTPs) featuring vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides), a non-invasive, nutrient- and metal-accumulating perennial grass, in removing heavy metals (Cu, Pb, and Zn) and nutrients (P and N) in stormwater retention ponds. Furthermore, the potential for utilizing the spent vetiver biomass for generating biochar and bioethanol was investigated. The study was conducted in a greenhouse setup under simulated wet and dry weather conditions using pond water collected from a retention pond in Stafford Township, New Jersey, USA. Two FTPs with vetiver (vegetated FTPs) were compared with two FTPs without vetiver (non-vegetated FTPs), which served as controls. Results showed that the removal of heavy metals and nutrients by the FTPs with vetiver was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than the FTPs without vetiver. Notably, vetiver showed resilience to stormwater pollutants and hydroponic conditions, displaying no visible stress symptoms. The biochar and bioethanol generated from the spent vetiver exhibited desirable yield and quality, without raising concerns regarding pollutant leaching, indicated by very low TCLP and SPLP concentrations. This study provides compelling evidence that the implementation of vetiver-based FTPs offers a cost-effective and environment-friendly solution for mitigating stormwater pollution in retention ponds. Furthermore, the utilization of vetiver biomass for biofuel and biochar production supports clean production and fostering circular economy efforts.
