Soil cracking can significantly alter the water and nutrient migration pathways in the soil, influencing plant growth and development. While biochar usage has effectively addressed soil cracking, the feasibility of using less energy-intensive hydrochars in desiccating soils remains unexplored. This study investigates the impact of wood and peanut shell hydrochars on the desiccation cracking characteristics of clayey soil. A series of controlled environmental laboratory incubations with regular imaging was conducted to determine crack development's dynamic in unamended and hydrochar-amended soils. The results reveal that the addition of wood hydrochar at 2% and 4% dosage reduced the crack intensity factor (CIF) by 22% and 43%, respectively, compared to the unamended control soil. Similarly, the inclusion of peanut shell hydrochar at 2% and 4% lowered the CIF by 22% and 51%, respectively. The presence of hydrophilic groups on the surface of hydrochars, such as O–H, CH, and C–O–C, enhanced the water retention capacity, as confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared analysis. The CIF decrease is attributed to mitigated water evaporation rates, enabled by enhanced water retention within the hydrochar pore spaces. These findings are supported by scanning electron microscopy analyses of the hydrochar morphology. Despite CIF reduction with hydrochar incorporation, the crack length density (CLD) increased across all hydrochar-amended series. In contrast to unamended soil which exhibited pronounced widening of large cracks and extensive inter-pore voids, the incorporation of hydrochar resulted in higher CLD due to the formation of finer interconnecting crack meshes. Consequently, the unamended control soil suffered greater water loss due to heightened evaporation rates. This study sheds new light on the potential of hydrochars in addressing desiccation-induced soil cracking and its implications for water conservation. Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) are known to enhance the remediation of hydrocarbon-contaminated soil and sediments compared with natural attenuation, and the primary mechanism has been assumed as anaerobic degradation facilitated by electroactive bacteria (EAB) using the electrode as electron acceptor. However, known EAB were rarely found on the anodes of reported BESs, which challenged the fundamental mechanism of BESs although significant current generation was always observed during degradation of these recalcitrant substrates. This study however found the abundant EAB Geobacter (∼27.3%) in the anodic biofilms, which confirmed the role of electroactive bio-anode on the conversion of hydrocarbons into the current for the enhancement of remediation. Widespread occurrence of aerobic hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria (HDB) (e.g. ∼24.0% Parvibaculum and ∼30.6% Pseudomonas) was observed in soils with limited dissolved oxygen (∼0.4 mg/L). The higher abundance of dehydrogenase genes was found in the anode biofilms than that in soils, indicating anodic microorganisms may be mainly responsible for the removal of intermediates of aerobic hydrocarbons degradation in soils. High water saturation level and sandy soil texture showed positive impacts on bioelectrochemical remediation, while clay soil and unsaturation condition pose challenges in mass transfers in the matrix. The reactor performance was consistent with the phylogenetic molecular ecological network (pMENs) analysis, which showed that sandy soil BESs had tighter microbial network interactions than clay soil reactors. Extracellular DNA (eDNA) is widely present in soil, with potential ecological impacts. Metal cations are naturally present on the surface of soil clay minerals, although the adsorption mechanism of eDNA on clay minerals saturated with metal cations is still not fully understood. The research investigated the adsorption of eDNA, using salmon sperm DNA as a representative, on metal cation (Na+, Ca2+, and Fe3+)-saturated montmorillonites (Mt). Metal cation-saturated Mt have higher adsorption capacities for DNA. Compared with Mt (3500 mg⋅kg−1), the amounts of DNA adsorption on metal cation-saturated Mt (pH = 7.0) were increased by 0.74–5.38 times, and followed the descending order of Fe-Mt > Na-Mt > Ca-Mt > Mt. A temperature of 25 °C was found to be more suitable than 15 and 35 °C for DNA adsorption, while an increasing pH value (3.0–9.0) reduced DNA adsorption on Mt and metal cation-saturated Mt. Microscopic and spectroscopic analyses, together with a model computation technique, confirmed that metal cations saturated on the surface of Mt work like a "cation bridge" linking oxygen atoms in the phosphate groups of DNA and the negatively charged moieties of Mt, which were predominantly bound through electrostatic forces, thus, facilitating DNA adsorption at pH > 5. The results of this investigation provide valuable insight into eDNA adsorption on soil clay minerals and the transport and fate of eDNA in the natural soil environment. Red clay, a widely distributed soil, weakens significantly when exposed to water. This poses challenges for using it as a foundation for urban infrastructure, as rainwater scouring, infiltration, and external loads can cause uneven settlement and landslides, compromising structural integrity. To address this issue, we propose the use of a green highly permeable water-soluble polyurethane material (PSP) as an alternative to conventional curing agents. We conducted a series of tests to evaluate the efficacy of PSP in improving the mechanical properties of red clay. Acoustic emission tests were used to examine the failure mode of PSP-stabilized red clay, while scanning electron microscopy provided microscopic insights into clay stabilization mechanisms. The triaxial test results establish empirical relationships between strength, stiffness, toughness, and control parameters (PSP content, moisture content, and confining pressure) of the stabilized clay. We found that PSP-stabilized soils exhibit ductile failure and strain hardening, with PSP curing agents effectively enhancing clay strength and stiffness within a 3-day curing period. Univariate analysis reveals positive correlations between peak energy absorption values, peak stress rates, and PSP content, while showing a negative correlation with moisture content. Confining pressure variations have relatively little effect on peak stress ratios of PSP soils, and PSP soil stiffness minimally influences confining pressure as PSP content increases. Tylosin (Tyl) is a veterinary antibiotic commonly used in swine and poultry production. Due to metabolic inefficiencies, it enters the environment through manure applications. Ion exchange is an important retention mechanism for Tyl, particularly for smectite clay. The objectives of this study are to characterize the exchange interactions of Tyl with common soil cations in subsoil horizons that contain smectite and to investigate the interactions using in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Adsorbed Tyl in pH neutral, smectitic subsoil horizons is divided into exchangeable and nonexchangeable forms. The percentage of adsorbed Tyl that is exchangeable varies from 36% to 43% when Na+ is the competing cation, and from 57% to 66% when Ca2+ competes. In NaX-TylX binary exchange systems, neither Na+ nor Tyl+ is preferred by the clay exchange phase, and the Vanselow selectivity coefficients (K V) for the NaX→TylX exchange reaction range between 0.79 and 1.41. In the CaX 2 -TylX systems, Tyl+ is preferred by the clay exchange phase when the equivalent fraction of TylX (E TylX) is less than 0.4. The K V values for the CaX 2 →TylX exchange reaction are at a maximum at the lowest E TylX values, with 17.6 < K V < 58.1, then decrease with increasing E TylX to 1.34 < K V < 6.28. Adsorbed Tyl masks the CEC of the soil clays; the effect is greatest in systems that are initially Tyl-saturated, and is attributed to the steric effects of the large Tyl molecule. Because of their toxic properties, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are designated as priority pollutants. The low solubility and strong sorption of PAHs in soil often limits bioremediation. To increase PAH bioavailability and enhance microbial degradation, surfactants are often added to contaminated soils. However, the effects of surfactants on the PAH degradation capacities of soil microbes are generally neglected. In this study, 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing was used to evaluate changes in the soil microbial community after the application of rhamnolipid biosurfactant or Brij-35 surfactant and Mycobacterium vanbaalenii PYR-1 bioaugmentation over a 50-d mineralization study in two soils contaminated with pyrene at 10 mg kg−1. The introduction of pyrene in both soils resulted in an increase in Firmicutes and a decrease in microbial richness and Shannon diversity index. Amendment of rhamnolipid at 1,400 μg g−1 to the native clay soil resulted in a decrease in Bacillus from 48% to 2%, which was accompanied with an increase in Mycoplana that accounted for 67% of the total genera relative abundance. Phylogenetic investigation of communities by reconstruction of unobserved states was used to predict the activity of functional genes involved in the PAH degradation KEGG pathway and determined that M. vanbaalenii PYR-1 bioaugmentation resulted in an increased number of functional genes utilized in PAH biodegradation. Results of this study provide a better understanding of the soil microbial dynamics in response to surfactant amendments in addition to bioaugmentation of a PAH-degrading microbe. Abstract Chromium (Cr) is a well-known toxic metal, but studies on Cr toxicity to soil-dwelling springtails are fairly limited, and did not consider the effects of various soil properties and long aging time. To address this, the chronic toxicity of Cr(VI) to survival and reproduction of model organism— Folsomia candida were evaluated in the laboratory studies. The results showed that compared to the soils aged only for 2 and 21 d, the concentrations inhibiting 50% reproduction (EC 50) significantly increased by 2.8–5.2 fold and 1.7–2.6 fold, the concentrations causing 50% mortality (LC 50) were higher than the highest test concentration in four soils aged for 150 d. Furthermore, the aging effects correlated significantly with soil amorphous Fe oxides. The EC 50 values of Cr significantly differed in ten soils aged for 150 d, ranging from 27 to 512 mg kg−1, which were associated with the variations in reduction and sorption capacity in different soils. Regression analysis indicated that soil clay was the most important single factor predicting soil Cr toxicity to reproduction, and the inclusion of cation exchange capacity in the clay regression could best explain the toxicity variance (87.2%). Additionally, soil pH, organic matter and amorphous Fe oxides could also well explain the toxicity variance (>55%). Nitrogen oxides (NO x = NO + NO 2) are important atmospheric pollutants that are directly harmful to human health. Recently in urban and industrial areas, synthetic materials have been developed and deployed to photocatalytically oxidize NO x to nitrate (NO 3 −) in order to improve air quality. We show that the natural presence of small amounts (≤5%) of titanium oxides, such as anatase and rutile, can also drive NO x oxidation to nitrate in soils under UV–visible irradiation. The NO uptake coefficients ranged between 0.1 × 10−6 for sandy soils to 6.4 × 10−5 in the case of tropical clay soils; the latter comparable in efficiency to current industrial man-made catalysts. This photocatalytic N -fixation mechanism offers a new strategy for NO x mitigation from the atmosphere by transforming it into nitrate, and simultaneously provides an energy efficient source of essential fertilizer to agriculture. Contamination of arid and semi-arid ecosystems by toxic heavy metals is a serious concern due to its impact on growth and productivity of crop and health risk through food chain. Therefore, the aims of this investigation were to study the impact of inorganic (i.e. nano hydroxyapatite, NHA and polyacrylamide, PAM) and organic (i.e. sugar beet factory lime, SBFL and biochar, BI) soil amendments on maize productivity grown in contaminated silty clay (i.e. fluvial, lacustrine) and sandy (i.e. marine) alkaline soils. In addition, the effect of those amendments on the content of heavy metals in plant organs and their fractions in alkaline soils at harvest as well as human health risk assessment were investigated. Application of amendments, particularly SBFL, followed by NHA and BI resulted in an improvement for maize growth and its productivity in comparison to PAM application and untreated soil. However, application of NHA significantly reduced the mobile fraction of Cd, Pb and Ni in soil and consequently in different maize organs, followed by application of SBFL and BI in comparison to untreated soil or soil treated with PAM. Additionally, transfer factors and health risk of metals were lesser when NHA and SBFL were applied into soil than those obtained from application of PAM. In conclusion, applications of NHA, SBFL and BI into contaminated alkaline soils with toxic heavy metals can be considered a vital option for ameliorating such soils from the view of environment and sustainable management in terms of heavy metals immobilization and reducing the metals content in plant organs. Fluoride, a naturally occurring chemical element, is largely insoluble in soils. More than 90% of the fluoride in soil is bound to soil particles and is unable to be dissolved. As part of the soil, fluoride is predominantly located in the colloid or clay fraction of the soil, and the movement of fluoride is strongly affected by the sorption capacity of the soil, which is affected by pH, the type of soil sorbent present, and the salinity. The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment soil quality guideline for fluoride in soils under a residential/parkland land use scenario is 400 mg/kg. In this review, we focus on fluoride contamination in soil and subsurface environments, and the various sources of fluorides are discussed in detail. The average fluoride concentration in soil in different countries and their regulations for soil and water are comprehensively reviewed. In this article, the latest advances in defluoridation methods are highlighted and the importance of further research addressing efficient and cost-effective methods to remediate fluoride contamination in soil is critically discussed. Methods used to mitigate fluoride risks by removing fluoride from the soil are presented. We strongly recommend that regulators and soil chemists in all countries explore opportunities to improve defluoridation methods and consider adopting more stringent regulations for fluoride in soil depending on geologic conditions. Soil contamination by microplastics (MPs) has gained widespread attention, whose fate may be influenced by land use types. The effects of land use types and the intensity of human activities on the distribution and sources of soil MPs at the watershed scale are unclear. In this study, 62 surface soil sites in representing five land use types (urban, tea garden, dryland, paddy field and woodland) and 8 freshwater sediment sites were investigated in the Lihe River watershed. MPs were detected in all samples, and the average abundance of soil and sediments was 401.85 ± 214.02 and 222.13 ± 54.66 items/kg, respectively. The soil MPs abundance followed the sequence: urban > paddy field > dryland > tea garden > woodland. Soil MP distribution and MP communities were significant different (p < 0.05) among land use types. The similarity of MP community highly correlated with geographic distance, and woodlands and freshwater sediments may be a potential fate for MPs in the Lihe River watershed. Soil clay, pH, and bulk density significantly correlated with MP abundance and fragment shape (p < 0.05). The positive correlation between population density, Total- Point of Interest (POI) and MP diversity indicates the importance of intensity of human activities in exacerbating soil MP pollution (p < 0.001). Plastic waste sources accounted for 65.12%, 58.60%, 48.15% and 25.35% of MPs in urban, tea garden, dryland and paddy field soils, respectively. Differences in the intensity of agricultural activities and cropping patterns were associated with different percentages of mulching film sources in the three types of agricultural soils. This study provides new ideas for the quantitative analysis of soil MP sources in different land use types. This work studies the feasibility of the periodic polarity reversal strategy (PRS) in a combined electrokinetic-biological process for the remediation of clayey soil polluted with a herbicide. Five two-weeks duration electrobioremediation batch experiments were performed in a bench scale set-up using spiked clay soil polluted with oxyfluorfen (20 mg kg −1 ) under potentiostatic conditions applying an electric field between the electrodes of 1.0 V cm −1 (20.0 V) and using PRS with five frequencies ( f ) ranging from 0 to 6 d −1 . Additionally, two complementary reference tests were done: single bioremediation and single electrokinetic. The microbial consortium used was obtained from an oil refinery wastewater treatment plant and acclimated to oxyfluorfen degradation. Main soil conditions (temperature, pH, moisture and conductivity) were correctly controlled using PRS. On the contrary, the electroosmotic flow clearly decreased as f increased. The uniform soil microbial distribution at the end of the experiments indicated that the microbial activity remained in every parts of the soil after two weeks when applying PRS. Despite the adapted microbial culture was capable of degrade 100% of oxyfluorfen in water, the remediation efficiency in soil in a reference test, without the application of electric current, was negligible. However, under the low voltage gradients and polarity reversal, removal efficiencies between 5% and 15% were obtained, and it suggested that oxyfluorfen had difficulties to interact with the microbial culture or nutrients and that PRS promoted transport of species, which caused a positive influence on remediation. Soil selenium is of great significance to human health. Soil-forming parent rocks are the most critical factor that influences soil Se levels. Chengmai County, Hainan Island, has a tropical climate and diverse types of parent rocks, in which soil Se content is high. This study investigated the vertical distribution of soil Se from various parent rock substrates under tropical climatic conditions, and the factors that influence these soil Se contents, with 69 vertical soil profiles covering Chengmai County. The vertical distribution of soil Se and correlations with CIA (chemical alteration index), Al 2 O 3 , TFe 2 O 3 (total iron oxide expressed as Fe 2 O 3), total iodine, SOC (soil organic carbon), and pH were analysed. As per the results, the mean ± standard error of Se content in the A, B, and C horizons was 0.88 ± 0.13 mg/kg, 0.77 ± 0.08 mg/kg and 0.45 ± 0.05 mg/kg, respectively. The parent rock strictly controlled the horizon distribution of Se in the A-horizon. Soil Se showed A-B-horizons-enrichment in the vertical profile, especially in soil profiles overlying granite and basalt. It is hypothesised that the Se enriched in soils developed from the Tuolie Formation due to the release of Se from the weathering process of Se-rich rocks. Meanwhile, Se in soils developed from granite and basalt is more closely associated with exogenous input. Another crucial factor for the high level of Se in Chengmai County is the tropical climate, which has led the rocks to generally undergo intense chemical weathering. This results in soils rich in clay minerals and Fe/Al oxyhydroxides, which easily absorb and retain Se. Furthermore, the Se content of the B-horizon was generally higher than that of the A-horizon due to leaching. These results provide further knowledge and understanding of the geochemical behaviour of soil Se and guide the evaluation of Se-rich land resources under tropical climatic conditions. Heavy metal contaminated soils pose a serious threat to the environment, and preparing ceramsite using contaminated soils was proposed as an effective method to address this threat in this study. Specifically, two typical soils (i.e., contaminated clay and sandy soil) were mixed with different ratios and calcined at temperature 1000–1200 °C to prepare ceramsite. Special attentions were paid to evaluating the immobilization of heavy metals in ceramsite and identifying the corresponding immobilization mechanisms. Using the leachability of heavy metals from ceramsite as evaluation criteria, the optimum mixing ratio of clay/sandy soil and sintering temperature were determined as 0.6:0.4 and 1200 °C. Moreover, based on the spectroscopic characterizations and thermodynamic calculation, high sintering temperature well facilitated the liquid phases formation, promoting the reactions between heavy metals and aluminosilicates and the valence state conversion of heavy metals. Accordingly, heavy metals were well immobilized in ceramsite by forming thermodynamically stable minerals, being encapsulated in solid matrix, and transforming to valence states with low mobility. The leaching conditions including pH and temperature had minimal effect on the immobilization of heavy metals in ceramsite. In summary, ceramsite prepared by contaminated soils was environmentally friendly and had good potential in engineering application as building materials. Phosphorus (P) availability in highly weathered soils is significantly influenced by the contents of iron (Fe)/aluminum (Al) oxides, clay minerals, and organic matter. With the increasing interest in biofertilizers (e.g. chitosan), it is important to understand how they affect P adsorption profiles on colloids of weathered soils rich in Fe/Al oxides. Thus, the effect of chitosan on the adsorption of P to colloids of hematite, gibbsite, Oxisol, and Ultisol was studied through electrokinetic measurements, spectroscopic analysis, and adsorption edge/isotherm profiles. The presence of chitosan significantly improved the surface positive charge and the decreasing trend of surface positive charge was slower for chitosan-treated colloids compared to the control with increasing pH. At pH 5.0, all the colloids were positively charged, with the oxides containing more positve charges than the soil colloids. At this pH value, the surface coverage capacity of P was 99.1, 61.6, 50.5, and 37.5 mmol kg⁻1 for Oxisol, Ultisol, hematite, and gibbsite, respectively. This suggests that clay minerals in soil colloids were vital in enhancing P adsorption. In the presence of chitosan, the surface coverage capacity of P was increased by 111%, 173%, 647%, and 488% for Oxisol, Ultisol, gibbsite, and hematite, respectively. Drawing inferences from spectroscopic analysis, citric acid desorption profile, and zeta potential analysis, we suggest that chitosan (CH) enhanced P adsorption by promoting the formation of (i) citric acid "undisplaceable" inner-sphere P complexes such as [Colloid-OP- O -CH] and [Colloid-OP- N -CH] , (ii) citric acid "displaceable" outer-sphere P complexes such as {[Colloid- O -CH]-OP} and {[Colloid- N -CH]-OP} , and (iii) water "leachable or soluble" P complexes such as {[Colloid-CH] + PO 4 ³⁻} and {[Colloid-OP]⁻CH + }. Thus, applying chitosan as a biofertilizer (source of N) along with P in highly weathered soils could improve P availability while reducing P leaching. Glyphosate and phosphate compete for the same adsorption sites in the soil because their adsorption mechanisms are similar as the herbicide contains a phosphate group. However, how this competition occurs in relation to the order of addition of the sorbate and the composition of the soils remains unclear. The effect of the soil clay composition and the order of glyphosate and monoammonium phosphate (MAP) additions on glyphosate sorption-desorption was investigated using three inceptisols collected from Colombian rice fields. Glyphosate adsorption isotherms were evaluated using the batch equilibrium method and were modeled applying the Freundlich equation. The values for glyphosate K fa , when evaluated alone, ranged from 14.39 to 639.86 mg1– na L na kg−1. An agreement was found between adsorbed glyphosate, chlorites, and low initial phosphorous soil content. Preadsorbed MAP or simultaneous MAP-glyphosate additions to the soil revealed a drastic reduction in glyphosate K fa values in soil containing the highest amount of 2 × 1 clays, but kaolinitic soils remained practically unaffected. Low desorption values could be associated with soils with the highest kaolinite content. Glyphosate remobilization was favored when the desorbing MAP solution was used in soils containing preadsorbed glyphosate. This study provides new knowledge on the effect of phosphorus fertilizers on glyphosate bioavailability in soils with different mineral compositions. The soils of five selected oilfields in China, across 11 degrees of latitude and 17 degrees of longitude were selected for the investigation. The results showed that the non-zonal composition of the residual TPHs in the soil was similar to the that of the crude oil input. Principal component analysis (PCA) suggested that the effect of zonal environmental factors explained 81.5% of the variability in the residual indexes of saturated and aromatic hydrocarbons. Understanding the adsorption behavior of radiocesium (RCs) in natural soils is crucial for remediation and evaluation of radioactive contaminated sites. In this study, we investigated the adsorption behavior of Cs(I) onto natural soils collected in Beijing by batch adsorption experiments and sequential extraction. A multi-site adsorption model was built to quantitatively analyze the adsorption capacities of soil clay minerals and predict of Cs(I) adsorption ratio of different adsorption sites. Linear programming calculations show that illite/smectite (I/S) mixture and illite(I) are the mainly clay mineral composition. Batch adsorption experiment results show that soils adsorption of Cesium ions is an exothermic process, and the order of influence of competitive cations on the competitive adsorption strength of Cs(I) is:K+>Mg2+≈Ca2+>Na+. HA (Humic Acid)has little effect on soil adsorption. SEM-EDS analysis shows that Cs+ is mainly distributed on the surface (PS) of soil particles. Based on the above results, the adsorption of Cs(I) onto clay minerals in soils is well predicts in both linear programming calculations and a multi-site adsorption model. The multi-site adsorption model can quantitatively describe and predict the adsorption behavior of Cs(I) on different clay sites in the soils. Frayed edge sites (FES) in the soil can effectively fix trace RCs. The higher concentration of cesium ions is mainly adsorbed on the PS and TIIS. Incineration of municipal sludge and agri-food by-products generates large quantities of ash that can be used in agriculture as phosphorus fertilizer. The fertilizing potential of sludge incineration ash (SIA) from 12 cities in Canada and the United States was tested in a greenhouse experiment against a synthetic fertilizer (TSP: triple superphosphate), a natural fertilizer (RP: rock phosphate), and a control without any P fertilizer. Two soil types were used: clay and sandy loam. A reliable a priori indicator of SIA P bioavailability was determined using the random forest method. SIA application increased ryegrass P uptake. The SIA relative P effectiveness (RPE), compared to the TSP, varied from 5.1% to 46.2% depending on the sludge origin and P solubility. SIA RPE was greater than RP for the clay soil but similar for the sandy loam soil. The neutral ammonium citrate (NAC) extraction, sometimes inappropriately used to characterize P availability of sludge and by-products, explained only 53% of the RPE variation. The random forest analysis showed that the oxalate extraction (Al, P, and Fe) is a better indicator (R2 = 0.94) of relative availability of SIA than the NAC P solubility (R2 = 0.86), and that Al content is the factor that influences most SIA P solubility. Based on our findings, we recommend the use of the Al, Fe, and P oxalate extraction to predict the SIA P availability, instead of the widely used NAC method which extracts only P. Being analogue to arsenic (As), phosphorus (P) may affect As dynamics in soil and toxicity to plants depending upon many soil and plant factors. Two sets of experiments were conducted to determine the effect of P on As fractionation in soils, its accumulation by plants and subsequent impact on growth, yield and physiological characteristics of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). Experimental plan comprised of two As levels (60 and 120 mg As kg−1 soil), four P (0-5-10-20 g phosphate rock kg−1 soil) and three textural types (sandy, loamy and clayey) with three replications. Among different As fractions determined, labile, calcium-bound, organic matter-bound and residual As increased while iron-bound and aluminum-bound As decreased with increasing P in all the three textural types. Labile-As percentage increased in the presence of P by 16.9–48.0% at As60 while 36.0–68.1% at As120 in sandy, 19.1–64.0% at As60 while 11.5–52.3% at As120 in loamy, and 21.8–58.2% at As60 while 22.3–70.0% at As120 in clayey soil compared to respective As treatment without P. Arsenic accumulation in plant tissues at both contamination levels declined with P addition as evidenced by lower bioconcentration factor. Phosphorus mitigated the As-induced oxidative stress expressed in term of reduced hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde while increased glutathione, and consequently improved the achene yield. Although, P increased As solubility in soil but restricted its translocation to plant, leading to reversal of oxidative damage, and improved sunflower growth and yield in all the three soil textural types, more profound effect at highest P level and in sandy texture. Thermal plasma blasting technology has been widely applied for rock cracking. Though, the application for environmental remediation has yet to be reported. Since the delivery of remediation agents into diesel contaminated clayey zones are exceptionally challenging, herein, this study explores the effect of pilot-scale thermal plasma blasting for soil fracturing and concurrently dispersing the Fenton reagent into the diesel contaminated silty soils. Six times plasma blasting with sole H 2 O 2 at 20 kV had the highest degradation of diesel (>97%) with an equilibrium time of 3 h, and the final diesel concentration was below the South Korean regulated health standard (500 mg kg−1). This study highlights plasma blasting able to deliver H 2 O 2 instantaneously and homogeneously into contaminated zone while promoting Fenton reaction synergism (f syn : 2.04) between H 2 O 2 and ≡Fe surface for effective remediation. Furthermore, the remediation cost (USD 4 metric ton−1) is much lower than most reported in situ technologies. We reviewed washing of radioactive Cs-contaminated concrete and soil based on the fate of Cs in concrete and soil, including sorption materials for treatment of supernatant solution. In non-aged cement materials (the calcium silicate hydration (C–S–H) phase), it was possible to decontaminate Cs using ion exchange with monovalent cations, such as NH 4 +. The clay components in the soil and aggregates were important factors in optimization of the efficiency and mechanism for Cs decontamination with washing solution. The parameters (reagent component, pH, and temperature) of the washing solution should be determined considering soil mineral type (here, weathered biotite (WB) with vermiculite), since monovalent cations such as NH 4 + and K+ can inhibit Cs decontamination due to collapse of the hydrated and expanded interlayer regions with cation exchange. In this case, hydrothermal treatment or H 2 O 2 dosing was necessary to expand the collapsed interlayer region for Cs removal by washing with cation exchange or organic acids. Acid and a chelating agent significantly enhanced Cs-release with dissolution of the adsorbent layer containing iron and aluminum oxides. The important characteristics of important and emerging sorption materials for treatment of the radioactive Cs-contaminated supernatant after washing treatment are discussed. Sorbents for treatment of washing supernatant are divided in to two main categories. Clay minerals, metal hexacyanoferrates, and ammonium molybdophosphates are discussed in the inorganic class of materials. Over the course of history, mining and metallurgical activities have influenced the socioeconomic development of human populations. However, these past and current activities can also lead to substantial environmental contamination by various metals. Here, we used an interdisciplinary approach (incorporating archaeology, mineralogy, environmental chemistry and ecotoxicology) to investigate the origin, fate and potential ecotoxicity of anomalous manganese (Mn) concentrations detected in the ancient mining district of Berthelange (medieval period, eastern France). Mineralogical investigations of slag samples showed that smelting temperature conditions in medieval bloomeries led to the production of slags mainly composed of Fe- and Mn-rich olivine, i.e., fayalites. Further mineralogical analyses of bulk soil and clay fractions allowed us to identify the presence of serpentine. This evidence of olivine weathering can account for the release of Mn from slags into the soil. In addition, chemical analyses of total and available (exchangeable and reducible) Mn concentrations in soil samples clearly showed the contribution of slags deposited 1000 years ago to soil contamination. A complementary ecotoxicity bioassay performed on soils from a slag heap using the land snail Cantareus aspersus confirmed that a significant fraction of the Mn detected in soils remains available for partitioning with the soil solution and transfer to soil organisms. Although no growth inhibition of snails was observed after 28 days of exposure, the animals accumulated quite elevated Mn concentrations in their tissues. Our study emphasizes the environmental availability and bioavailability of Mn from ancient metallurgical wastes to soil-dwelling invertebrates, i.e., snails, even one millennium after their deposition. Hence, as for more recent industrial sites, past mining ecosystems must be a cause of concern for the scientific community and public authorities. Sclerotium rolfsii is a soil-borne fungus that causes big losses in productivity of various plant species including Phaseolus vulgaris L. The objectives of this study were to (1) evaluate the impacts of Sclerotium rolfsii on growth and production of common bean plants, (2) determine the effects of Sclerotium rolfsii on nutritive contents of beans, and (3) test the efficacy of bio-inoculants on suppressing plant infection with Sclerotium rolfsii. To fulfill these objectives, we used a coupled pot and field experimental approaches during two growing seasons. Common beans were inoculated with either arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (Claroideoglomus etunicatum), Saccharomyces cerevisiae, or Trichoderma viride solely or in different combinations. Non-inoculated plants and fungicide treated ones were considered as reference treatments. Throughout these experiments, minimal amounts of rock phosphate were added during soil preparation for bio-inoculated treatments, while the non-inoculated reference treatments received a full dose of P as calcium superphosphate. Results revealed that all tested bioinoculants significantly raised the activities of plant defense enzymes i.e. chitinase, peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase as compared to non-inoculated control. Likewise, pre-, post- and plant survival percentages significantly increased due to these bio-inoculations. Increased survival percentages were attributed to the concurrent increases in uptake of N, P and Zn nutrients by plants treated with bioinoculants. In this concern, plant nutrients uptake was higher in combined than single bio-inoculant treatments. Moreover, the uptake values of plant nutrients owing to the combined bio-inoculants were higher than the corresponding ones achieved due to fungicide treatment. In conclusion, application of the tested bio-inoculants, especially the combined ones can be considered an eco-friendly approach that not only enhances plants resistance against infection with Sclerotium rolfsii but also improves plant nutritive status. The understanding of the interaction between soil physicochemical attributes and herbicide behavior is fundamental for optimizing the efficient use of PRE-emergence herbicides in a more sustainable approach. However, it is still a poorly studied area within precision agriculture. Thus, the objective of this research was to evaluate the correlation of soil physicochemical attributes with the sorption and desorption processes of hexazinone and tebuthiuron to support application maps considering the field level variability. Soil samples from an agricultural area had their physicochemical attributes analyzed and were submitted to sorption and desorption studies of 14C-tebuthiuron and 14C-hexazinone using the batch equilibrium method. The values of sorption and desorption apparent coefficients (K d), sorption and desorption percentage and bioavailability were correlated with soil attributes by Pearson's correlation. The K d values of tebuthiuron and hexazinone sorption ranged from 1.2 to 2.9 mL g−1 and 0.4–0.6 mL g−1, respectively. For desorption of tebuthiuron and hexazinone, K d values ranged from 3.4 to 4.4 mL g−1 and 2.6–3.0 mL g−1, respectively. A positive correlation among clay content, soil organic matter (OM), and tebuthiuron and hexazinone sorption K d values were found. Both herbicides had variable retention according to geographic position in the area. The recommendation of application of PRE herbicides, such as tebuthiuron and hexazinone, observing the physicochemical attributes of the soil is an alternative to increase efficiency in weed control and decrease the risk of environmental contamination. Calcareous soil has a strong buffering capacity for neutralizing acid and stabilizing cadmium (Cd) because of the high calcium carbonate (CaCO 3) content. However, it is not clear whether the buffering capacity of calcareous soil can be maintained after long-term wastewater irrigation. We selected a typical area in western China that has been irrigated with wastewater for over 50 years to study the temporal changes of soil properties and their effects on Cd uptake by wheat. The results showed that compared with the background level before the 1960s, the soil pH and CaCO 3 content in 2018 were lower by 0.80 units and 35%, respectively, while the soil organic matter (SOM) content, Olsen phosphorus (P) content, and soil total Cd content in 2018 increased by 1.54, 13.05, and 164 times, respectively. Due to the significant decrease in the soil pH and CaCO 3 , the high load of soil total Cd and electrical conductivity, the low soil clay content, and the coupling of SOM with soil nitrogen and P, the input Cd was activated. Furthermore, the activated Cd was effectively taken up by wheat roots and transported to grains with the assistance of dissolved organic carbon. Our results highlight that long-term wastewater irrigation caused irreversible damage to soil buffering capacity, resulting in the Cd activation and the enhancement of Cd uptake by wheat. The important effect of soil wetting and drying cycle (WDC) on soil structure, and the consequent effect on pollutant fate is underexplored. We thoroughly investigated the changes in soil structure and in leaching of Alion (indaziflam) and Express (tribenuron methyl), pre and post WDC, from two clayey soils and two loamy soils under different land uses (uncultivated, field crops, and orchards). Soil stability was quantified by an aggregate durability index we recently developed. WDC did not affect the stability of the sandy-loam soils, as expected. However, for the sandy-clay-loam with high CaCO 3 content aggregation was observed. For the clayey soils with similar CaCO 3 , aggregation and disaggregation were obtained, for a soil with relatively low and high SOM, respectively. The stability trends are reflected by the ratio between the contents of inorganic carbon and soil organic matter (SOM), CaCO 3 /SOM, normalized to the clay content. Aggregation was explained by CaCO 3 cementation, while disaggregation was attributed to high clay content and to alterations in SOM conformation post WDC. These opposite trends, obtained for the two clayey soils, were confirmed by analyzing changes in soil packing employing X-ray tomography (micro-CT). Our results clearly demonstrated that soil aggregation and disaggregation, induced by a WDC, suppresses and enhances herbicide mobility, respectively. However, the effect of WDC on herbicide leaching was not noticeable for Alion upon its high adsorption to a clayey soil, indicating that herbicide physical-chemical properties may dominate. Finally, WDC induces micron-scale changes in aggregate structure, which have a notable effect on pollutant mobility and fate in the environment. Clay materials are commonly used in remediation techniques for heavy metal contaminated soil. In this study, a magnesium (Mg(OH) 2 /MgO)-montmorillonite was proposed to be utilized for heavy metals immobilization in contaminated soil, with the remediation efficiency evaluated through the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) and the community bureau of reference sequential extraction procedure (BCR). The addition of magnesium-montmorillonite resulted in lower TCLP extractability for the heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn and Cd) in soil as it promoted their conversion from acid soluble fraction to residual fraction. Meanwhile, MM raised the soil pH and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC). It was demonstrated that the immobilization of heavy metal in the presence of magnesium-montmorillonite was primarily induced by electrostatic attraction, precipitation and chelation with water-soluble organic carbon. Interestingly, a decreased bacterial community diversity was observed in soil treated by magnesium-montmorillonite (MM). The presence of pure magnesium-montmorillonite promoted the relative abundance of Proteobacteria , Actinobacteria and Firmicutes but reduced that of Bacteroides and Acidobacteria. Our results suggest that integrating the biochar into montmorillonite-based amendments can alleviate the damage to soil microorganisms by weakening the negative correlation between the two factors (content clay and WSOC in soil) and soil bacteria. EPA 3051A and Aqua Regia (AR) are widely adopted by global environmental agencies to assess soil quality in relation to potentially harmful elements (PHE). However, previous study has shown the formation of large amounts of short-range order materials (SRO) in the residues of these extractions. Residues obtained from the 3051A and AR were recovered from filter papers. To characterize the SRO in these residues, sequential extractions were performed with 0.2 mol L−1 ammonium oxalate (AO) and 0.5 mol L−1 NaOH. On average (n = 15), the 3051A and AR residues contained 37% and 60% of SRO, respectively. The largest amounts of SRO formed in the AR residue was in sample 5 (99% of SRO). The main component of the SRO was Al 2 O 3 -AO, Fe 2 O 3 -AO and SiO 2 –NaOH. The formation of SRO and PHE resorption levels were random and highly dependent on the mineralogy of the soil clay fraction. Soils rich in smectites, which are more common in temperate regions, formed larger amounts of SRO. The association of Pb with the SRO was more pronounced in the 3051A residue than in the AR residue. If SRO was not extracted after 3051A, in sample 7, for example, 595 mg kg−1 of Pb (10.2%) would have not been accounted. The maximum PHE resorptions in SRO were (%): Pb – 10; Cu – 470; Ba – 280; As – 21. The underestimation of PHE contents due to resorption mechanisms may lead an environmental agency to certify the use of an area contaminated with PHE.
