Active lidar remote sensing has been used to obtain detailed and quantitative information about the properties of aerosols. We have analyzed the spatio-temporal classification of aerosols using the parameters of particle linear depolarization ratio and single scattering albedo from Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) over seven megacities of Asia namely; Lahore, Karachi, Kanpur, Pune, Beijing, Osaka, and Bandung. We find that pollution aerosols dominate during the winter season in all the megacities. The concentrations, however, vary concerning the locations, i.e., 70–80% pollution aerosols are present over Lahore, 40–50% over Karachi, 90–95% over Kanpur and Pune, 60–70% and over Beijing and Osaka. Pure Dust (PD), Pollution Dominated Mixture (PDM), and Dust Dominated Mixture (DDM) are found to be dominant during spring and summer seasons.This proposes that dust over Asia normally exists as a mixture with pollution aerosols instead of pure form. We also find that black carbon (BC) dominated pollution aerosols. Chemical degradation is one of the crucial methods for the remediation of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in soil/sediment. The sequestration effect of black carbon (BC) can affect the adsorption state of HOCs, thereby affecting their chemical degradability. Our study focused on the chemical degradability of 2-Chlorobiphenyl (PCB1) sequestrated on the typical BC (fly ash (FC), soot (SC), low-temperature biochar (BC400) and high-temperature biochar (BC900)) by iron-nickel bimetallic nanomaterials (nZVI/Ni) based on TENAX desorption technology. The results showed that PCB1 adsorbed in various states were simultaneously dechlorinated by nZVI/Ni. Specifically, rapid-desorption-state PCB1 tended to degrade more easily than resistant-desorption-state PCB1. Moreover, the degradation mechanism varied according to the type of BC. In the case of FC and SC, the degradation rate was lower than the desorption rate for the PCB1 in rapid and slow desorption states, and the degradation rate of PCB1 in the resistant desorption state was negligible. The PCB1 on FC and SC was first desorbed from BC and then degraded. However, in terms of BC400 and BC900, the degradation rate was higher than the desorption rate, and the degradation rate of the resistant-desorption-state PCB1 was 1.4 × 10−2 h−1 and 4.1 × 10−2 h−1, respectively. The graphitized structure of BC900 can directly transfer electrons, so more than 90% of the resistant-desorption-state PCB1 could be degraded. In addition, BC may affect the longevity of nZVI/Ni, thereby affecting its degradability. Therefore, the chemical degradability of BC-adsorbed HOCs should be comprehensively evaluated based on the adsorption state and the properties of BC. Black carbon (BC), which is a by-product with incomplete combustion of carbonaceous materials, can be used as an indicator of combustion emissions and is an important climate forcer. In this study, a spatial–temporal synthesis of BC aerosols and the affecting factors was conducted in urban Beijing. As observed, BC showed a spatial pattern with high concentration in south and low in north. BC concentration evidently decreased by approximately 61% between 2005 and 2017. From 2015 to 2017, the mass ratio of BC/PM 2.5 dropped by 28%, which suggested a more efficient effect of control measures to BC than PM 2.5. The BC/CO ratio dropped by 22%, which indicated the decreasing emission from fossil fuel sources. With regard to BC loading, the spectral dependence of absorption aerosol exhibited significant seasonal variations. High absorption Ångström exponent (α) was observed during heating season, which reflected the increasing contribution of brown carbon (BrC) to light absorption. Backward trajectory analysis showed that the levels of BC and PM 2.5 were high in Cluster-South and Cluster-West. BrC absorption was high in Cluster-West, Cluster-Northwest and Cluster-Northeast, due to the biomass and coal burning for domestic heating and aging processes on a regional scale. The effects of emission control and transport variability on pollutant variation were estimated on the basis of the cluster analysis. Results indicated that the effect of emission reduction was the major reason for the decrease of BC from 2015 to 2017, which resulted in a 34% reduction of BC concentration. Meanwhile, transport variability caused a 15% reduction. • A decrease by 61% in BC concentration was observed in urban Beijing during 2005–2017. • Approximately 34% of the decrease in BC concentration was attributed to emission control. • BrC contributed a considerable part of total aerosol light absorption, particularly during heating season. The Himalayan–Tibetan Plateau is a typical remote region with sparse air pollution. However, air pollution in cites of the inner Himalayan–Tibetan Plateau is relatively serious due to emissions from local residents. Carbonaceous aerosols are not only an important component of air pollutants that affect the health of local residents but also an important trigger of climate change. In this study, the annual wet and dry deposition rates of carbonaceous particles were investigated in Lhasa—a typical city in the Himalayan–Tibetan Plateau, by collecting precipitation and dry deposition samples and analyzing with a thermal-optical measurement protocol. The results showed that the in-situ annual wet deposition rates of water-insoluble organic carbon (WIOC) and black carbon (BC) were 169.6 and 19.4 mg m−2 yr−1, respectively, with the highest and lowest values occurring in the monsoon and non-monsoon periods, respectively. Both precipitation amounts and concentrations of WIOC and BC contributed to wet deposition rates. The dry deposition rates of WIOC and BC in Lhasa had an opposite seasonal variation to that of wet deposition, with annual average deposition rates of 2563.9 and 165.7 mg m−2 yr−1, respectively, which were much higher than those of the nearby glacier region and remote area. These values were also much higher than the results from modeling and empirical calculations, indicating that Lhasa is a high pollution point that cannot capture by models. The results in this study have significant implications for the transport of local emissions in Lhasa to the nearby remote and glacier regions.
