Organic ferroelectric (FE) materials, though known for more than a century, are yet to reach close to the benchmark of inorganic or hybrid materials in terms of the magnitude of polarization. Amongst the different classes of organic systems, donor (D)-acceptor (A) charge-transfer (CT) complexes are recognized as promising for ferroelectricity owing to their neutral-to-ionic phase transition at low temperature. This review presents an overview of different supramolecular D-A systems that have been explored for FE phase transitions. The discussion begins with a general introduction of ferroelectricity and its different associated parameters. Then it moves on to show early examples of CT cocrystals that have shown FE properties at sub-ambient temperature. Subsequently, recent developments in the field of room temperature (RT) ferroelectricity, exhibited by H-bond-stabilized lock-arm supramolecular-ordering (LASO) in D-A co-crystals or other FE CT-crystals devoid of neutral-ionic phase transition are discussed. Then the discussion moves on to emerging reports on other D-A soft materials such as gel and foldable polymers; finally it shows very recent developments in ferroelectricity in supramolecular assemblies of single-component dipolar or ambipolar π-systems, exhibiting intra-molecular charge transfer. The effects of structural nuances such as H-bonding, balanced charge transfer and chirality on the observed ferroelectricity is described with the available examples. Finally, piezoelectricity in recently reported ambipolar ADA-type systems are discussed to highlight the future potential of these soft materials in micropower energy harvesting., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

This article reports supramolecular polymerization of two bis-amide functionalized naphthalene-diimide (NDI) building blocks (NDI-L and NDI-C) in two solvents, namely n-heptane (Hep) and methylcyclohexane (MCH). NDI-L and NDI-C differ only by the peripheral hydrocarbon wedges, consisting of linear C7 chains or cyclic methylcyclohexane rings, respectively. UV/Vis and FTIR spectroscopy studies reveal distinct internal order and H-bonding pattern for NDI-L and NDI-C aggregates irrespective of the solvent system, indicating the dominant role of the intrinsic packing parameters of the individual building block, possibly influenced by the peripheral steric crowding. However, NDI-L produces a significantly stronger gel in Hep compared to MCH as evident from the rheological and thermal properties. In contrast, NDI-C exhibits a clear preference for MCH, producing gel with moderate strength but in Hep it fails to produce 1D morphology or gelation. All-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulation studies corroborate with the experimental observation and provide the rationale for the observed solvent-shape effect by revealing a quantitative estimate regarding the thermodynamics of self-assembly in these four combinations. Such clear-cut shape-matching effect (between the peripheral hydrocarbon wedge and the solvent system) unambiguously support a direct participation of the solvent molecules during supramolecular polymerization and presence of a closely-adhered solvent shell around the supramolecular polymers, similar to the first layer of water molecules around the protein surface. Solvent induced CD experiments support this hypothesis as induced CD band was observed only from a chiral co-solvent of matching shape. This is reconfirmed by the higher de-solvation temperature of the shape-matching NDI/solvent system combination compared to the shape mis-match combination in variable temperature UV/Vis experiments, revealing transformation to a different aggregate at higher temperatures rather than disassembly to the monomer for all four combinations., (© 2022 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

This article reveals 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) regulated pathway selectivity in the supramolecular polymerization of a naphthalene-diimide derivative (NDI-1), appended with a carboxylic acid group. In decane, NDI-1 produces ill-defined aggregate (Agg-1) due to different H-bonding motifs of the -COOH group. With one mole equivalent DMAP, the NDI-1/DMAP complex introduces new nucleation condition and exhibits a cooperative supramolecular polymerization producing J-aggregated fibrillar nanostructure (Agg-2). With 10 % DMAP and fast cooling (10 K/min), similar nucleation and open chain H-bonding with the free monomer in an anti-parallel arrangement produces identical J-aggregate (Agg-2a). With 2.5 % DMAP and slow cooling (1 K/min), a distinct nucleation and supramolecular polymerization pathway emerge leading to the thermodynamically controlled Agg-3 with face-to-face stacking and 2D-morphology. Slow cooling with 5-10 % DMAP produces a mixture of Agg-2a and Agg-3. H-bonding driven J-type aggregation and cooperative supramolecular polymerization of a sulfur-substituted chiral naphthalene-diimide (NDI)-derivative (S,S)-NDI-2 in decane leads to remarkable enhancement of fluorescence quantum yield (43.3 % from 0.5 % in the monomeric state) and intense CPL signal in the aggregated state with a high luminescence dissymmetry factor (g lum ) of 4.6×10 -2 . A mixture of NDI-2 with a structurally similar NDI-derivative NDI-1 (mixture of racemic (S,S)- and (R,R)- isomers and the achiral derivative) in 1:9 (NDI-2/NDI-1) ratio, when heated and slowly cooled to room temperature, showed no enhanced CD band, indicating lack of any preferential helicity. However, when a monomeric solution of the NDI-1 in tetrahydrofuran (THF) was injected to preformed seed of NDI-2 in decane, a prominent CD signal appeared, indicating chiral amplification resulting in induced CPL with high g lum value of 2.0×10 -2 from mostly (>98.5 %) diastereomeric mixture., (© 2020 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Oligothiophene derivatives have been extensively studied as p-type semiconducting materials in organic electronics applications. This work reports the synthesis, self-assembly and photophysical properties of acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A)-type oligothiophene derivatives by end-group engineering of quaterthiophene (QT) with naphthalene monoimide (NMI) chromophores that are further connected to a trialkoxy benzamide wedge. Conjugation to the NMI units reduces the HOMO-LUMO gap significantly, and consequently the absorption spectrum exhibits a bathochromic shift of about 50 nm compared with QT. Furthermore, extended H-bonding interactions among the amido groups of the peripheral wedges produce entangled fibrillar nanostructures and gelation in hydrocarbon solvents such as methylcyclohexane, wherein the A-D-A chromophore exhibits typical H-aggregation. On the contrary, the fact that the same chromophore, lacking only the amido units, does not produce gels or H-aggregates indicates strong impact of H-bonding on the self-assembly. Computational studies revealed the electronic properties of the chromophore and predicted the geometry of a dimer in the H-aggregate that reasonably matches with the experimental results. Bulk electrical conductivity measurements determined an excellent conductivity of 2.3×10 -2  S cm -1 for the H-aggregated system (OT-1), which is two orders of magnitude higher than that of the same chromophore lacking the amido groups (OT-2)., (© 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Programmable assembly of biomolecules is a fast growing research area that aims to emulate nature's elegance in creating numerous hierarchical self-assembled structures, which are responsible for unimaginably difficult biological functions. Protein assembly is a particularly challenging task, owing to their structural diversity, conformational heterogeneity, and high molecular weight. This article reveals the ability of a supramolecular structure-directing unit (SSDU) to regulate the entropically favourable supramolecular assembly of a covalently conjugated protein (bovine serum albumin (BSA)) to produce well-defined protein-decorated micelles with remarkably high thermal stability, suppression of the thermal denaturation of the protein, and retention of enzymatic activity. Furthermore, a SSDU-appended thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) co-assembles with the SSDU-BSA conjugate because, in both cases, assembly was primarily driven by specific molecular recognition between the SSDUs. However, the resulting supramolecular protein-polymer conjugate exhibits distinctly different polymersome structure to that of the micellar particle produced by the protein-SSDU conjugate. The stimuli-responsive supramolecular co-assembly of two π-amphiphiles, NDI-1 and Py-1, in which an acceptor (A) (naphthalene diimide) and a donor (D) (pyrene) chromophore, respectively, serve as the hydrophobic segment, is described. In addition, both contain an amide group in a designated location so that H-bonding and D-A charge-transfer (CT) interactions can operate simultaneously. H-bonding among the amide groups not only enhanced the CT interaction promoted by the alternating D-A stacking propensity, but also fixed the lateral orientation of the two chromophores and thus compelled the anionic and nonionic hydrophilic head groups, appended with the D and A amphiphiles, respectively, to remain segregated on two opposite sides of the amphiphilic alternating supramolecular copolymer. This copolymer showed spontaneous polymersome assembly with the D-appended anionic groups displayed at the outer surface, whereas the A-appended hydrophilic wedge converged at the inner lacuna. In contrast, spherical or cylindrical micellar structures were produced by Py-1 and NDI-1, respectively. Effective functional-group display in the D-A supramolecular polymersome enabled protein-surface recognition and inhibition of the enzymatic activity of Cht. Under a reducing environment, formation of NDI .- jeopardized the D-A interaction and thus the A chromophores were ejected out of the membrane of the polymersome causing its gradual contraction in size by >75 %. This Communication reports photo-triggered supramolecular assembly of a naphthalene-diimide (NDI) derivative, appended with a photo-labile ortho-nitrobenzyl (ONB)-ester protected carboxylic acid. Photo-irradiation produces the free COOH group which facilitates H-bonding-driven face-to-face stacking of the NDI chromophores producing an ultra-thin (height <2.0 nm) two-dimensional (2D) nanosheet. In contrast, spontaneous supramolecular assembly of the same active monomer exhibits entirely different features such as uncontrolled growth, J-aggregation and fibrillar morphology. A completely different pathway for photo-triggered assembly is attributed to the dual function of the photo-caged pro-monomer in i) producing the carboxylic acid in controlled manner and ii) simultaneously inhibiting the spontaneous J-aggregation of the photo-generated monomers by ester-carboxylic acid H-bonding and in turn directing a distinct growth mechanism., (© 2018 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Herein, the self-assembly of a few 1,3-dihydroxyl functionalized naphthalene diimide (NDI) derivatives has been reported with particular emphasis on the impact of chirality on gelation and the effect of self-assembly on charge-carrier mobility. A nonconventional gelator (R)-NDI, devoid of any long alkyl chains, exhibited spontaneous gelation in tetra-chloroethylene (TCE). Based on X-ray crystallography and powder X-ray diffraction studies, it was established that a ladder-like hydrogen-bonded chain formation between the 1,3-dihydroxyl group leads to the fibrillar structures with preferential helicity. Likewise the (S)-isomer also exhibited identical gelation and mesoscopic structure but produced fibrils with the opposite handedness. Intriguingly, an equimolar mixture of the (R)- and (S)-isomers did not show any gelation ability, rather a macroscopic precipitation was observed and, in sharp contrast to the individual isomers, the morphology of the mixture showed ill-defined near spherical agglomerates. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies revealed an identical crystallization peak for the supramolecular polymer produced from the enantiopure gelators ((R)- or (S)-isomer), which was absent in their equimolar mixture. However, mixtures of the two isomers with enantiomeric excess retrieved the gelation ability and preferential helicity demonstrating that chiral amplification is operative in the present system through the so-called "majority rule" effect. Chirality induction was also realized by the "sergeant and soldier" principle in the supramolecular assembly of an achiral NDI gelator in the presence of either the (R)- or (S)-isomer as the chiral dopant. However, the strong helical bias induced by the chiral gelator was found to be opposite in nature compared to that found in the self-assembly of the pure chiral gelator that has been rarely reported in the literature. This article discloses hydrogen-bonding driven supramolecular polymerization of a core-substituted naphthalene-diimide derivative NDI-1, which exhibits J-aggregation in all tested hydrocarbon solvents; however, spontaneous gelation was noticed only in linear alkanes in contrast to free flowing solution in their cyclic analogs. Mechanistic investigation by variable-temperature UV/Vis studies and analyzing the data by using an appropriate model(s) elucidates a highly cooperative self-assembly pathway in linear hydrocarbons (heptane, octane, nonane, or decane) in sharp contrast to cyclohexane or methylcyclohexane in which an ill-defined polymerization was noticed. This is attributed to the direct participation of linear alkanes in the nucleation process by favorable mixing with the peripheral alkyl chains of the NDI monomer, which appears not to be the case for cyclic alkanes owing to geometry mismatch. Although all tested linear hydrocarbons induced nucleation-elongation growth, the thermodynamic parameters were found to depend on the chain length of the alkane. The morphology of the self-assembled polymer was strongly dependent on the growth mechanism as we noticed fibrillar networks and short-length rods, respectively, in decane and methylcyclohexane (MCH). However, in the presence of a small amount of additive (preformed fiber in decane; added in situ or post self-assembly) a fibrillar structure was noticed also in MCH, corroborating the self-assembly in solution, which adopted a cooperative mechanism similar to linear alkanes., (© 2017 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Photo-initiated supramolecular polymerization of a naphthalenediimide (NDI-1) derivative containing an ortho-nitrobenzyl (ONB)-protected amide group is demonstrated. In a hydrocarbon solvent (methylcyclohexane), it remains as monomer. Upon photo-irradiation, deprotection of the ONB group produces NDI-2 with a free amide group, which drives supramolecular polymerization by self-complementary H-bonding between the amide groups, leading to gelation. The polymerization rate can be controlled by tuning the energy of the light source. During photopolymerization, a gradual increase in hydrodynamic radius and viscosity is noticed. More interestingly, the morphology of the supramolecular polymer of NDI-2, produced by photo-irradiation, was a spherulite, which is in sharp contrast with the fibrillar morphology of NDI-2 polymer, when assembled spontaneously without a phototrigger. We have introduced a new ABA-type amphiphilic block copolymer consisting of functional oligourethane hydrophobic blocks and two polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrophilic blocks. The polymer was synthesized in a single step by step-growth polymerization between two monomers, namely tetraphenylethylene (TPE)-diol and hexamehylene di-isocyanate in the presence of a monofunctional impurity PEG-2000. The polymer exhibits facile self-assembly in water by synergistic effects of H-bonding and π-π interaction among the oligourethane core, leading to the formation of robust nanoparticles with remarkable aggregation-induced emission (AIE). These nanoparticles show very low critical aggregation concentration, stability over a large pH window, and excellent biocompatibility as revealed by an MTT assay. Cellular imaging with cancer cells showed facile cellular uptake and, more importantly, retention of AIE in cellular milieu for long times, which was successfully utilized for long-term cancer cell tracking., (© 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. An adaptable and efficient molecular recognition pair has been established by taking advantage of the complementary nature of donor-acceptor interactions together with the strength of hydrogen bonds. Such distinct molecular recognition propagates in orthogonal directions to effect extended alternating co-assembly of two different appended molecular entities. The dimensions of the assembled structures can be tuned by stoichiometric imbalance between the donor and acceptor building blocks. Self-assembly of a series of carboxylic acid-functionalized naphthalene diimide (NDI) chromophores with a varying number (n=1-4) of methylene spacers between the NDI ring and the carboxylic acid group has been studied. The derivatives show pronounced aggregation due to the synergistic effects of H-bonding between the carboxylic acid groups in a syn-syn catemer motif and π stacking between the NDI chromophores. Solvent-dependent UV/Vis studies reveal the existence of monomeric dye molecules in a "good" solvent such as chloroform and self-assembly in "bad" solvents such as methylcyclohexane. The propensity of self-assembly is comparable for all samples. Temperature-dependent spectroscopic studies show high thermal stability of the H-bonding-mediated self-assembled structures. In the presence of a protic solvent such as MeOH, self-assembly can be suppressed, suggesting a decisive role of H-bonding, whereas π stacking is more a consequence of than a cause for self-assembly. Syn-syn catemer-type H-bonding is supported by powder XRD studies and the results corroborate well with DFT calculations. The morphology as determined by AFM is found to be dependent on the value of n; with increasing n, the morphology gradually shifts from 2D nanosheets to 1D nanofibers. Emission spectra show sharp emission bands with relatively small Stokes shifts. In addition, a rather broad emission band is observed at longer wavelengths because of the in situ formation of excimer-type species. Due to such a heterogeneous nature, the emission spectrum spans almost the entire red-green-blue region. Depending on the value of n, the ratio of intensities of the two emission bands is changed, which results in a tunable luminescent color. Furthermore, in the case of n=1 and 3, almost pure white light emission is observed. Time-resolved photoluminescence spectra show a very short lifetime (a few picoseconds) of monomeric dye molecules and biexponential decays with longer lifetimes (on the order of nanoseconds) for aggregated species. Current-voltage measurements show electrical conductivity in the range of 10(-4)  S cm(-1) for the aggregated chromophores, which is four orders of magnitude higher than the value for a structurally similar NDI control molecule lacking the H-bonding functionality., (Copyright © 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. This paper reports comprehensive studies on the mixed assembly of bis-(trialkoxybenzamide)-functionalized dialkoxynaphthalene (DAN) donors and naphthalene-diimide (NDI) acceptors due the cooperative effects of hydrogen bonding, charge-transfer (CT) interactions, and solvophobic effects. A series of DAN as well as NDI building blocks have been examined (wherein the relative distance between the two amide groups in a particular chromophore is the variable structural parameter) to understand the structure-dependent variation in mode of supramolecular assembly and morphology (organogel, reverse vesicle, etc.) of the self-assembled material. Interestingly, it was observed that when the amide functionalities are introduced to enhance the self-assembly propensity, the mode of co-assembly among the DAN and NDI chromophores no longer remained trivial and was dictated by a relatively stronger hydrogen-bonding interaction instead of a weak CT interaction. Consequently, in a highly non-polar solvent like methylcyclohexane (MCH), although kinetically controlled CT-gelation was initially noticed, within a few hours the system sacrificed the CT-interaction and switched over to the more stable self-sorted gel to maximize the gain in enthalpy from the hydrogen-bonding interaction. In contrast, in a relatively less non-polar solvent such as tetrachloroethylene (TCE), in which the strength of hydrogen bonding is inherently weak, the contribution of the CT interaction also had to be accounted for along with hydrogen bonding leading to a stable CT-state in the gel or solution phase. The stability and morphology of the CT complex and rate of supramolecular switching (from CT to segregated state) were found to be greatly influenced by subtle structural variation of the building blocks, solvent polarity, and the DAN/NDI ratio. For example, in a given D-A pair, by introducing just one methylene unit in the spacer segment of either of the building blocks a complete change in the mode of co-assembly (CT state or segregated state) and the morphology (1D fiber to 2D reverse vesicle) was observed. This paper describes the spontaneous vesicular assembly of a naphthalene-diimide (NDI)-based non-ionic bolaamphiphile in aqueous medium by using the synergistic effects of π-stacking and hydrogen bonding. Site isolation of the hydrogen-bonding functionality (hydrazide), a strategy that has been adopted so elegantly in nature, has been executed in this system to protect these moieties from the bulk water so that the distinct role of hydrogen bonding in the self-assembly of hydrazide-functionalized NDI building blocks could be realized, even in aqueous solution. Furthermore, the electron-deficient NDI-based bolaamphiphile could engage in donor-acceptor (D-A) charge-transfer (CT) interactions with a water-insoluble electron-rich pyrene donor by virtue of intercalation of the latter chromophore in between two NDI building blocks. Remarkably, even when pyrene was located between two NDI blocks, intermolecular hydrogen-bonding networks between the NDI-linked hydrazide groups could be retained. However, time-dependent AFM studies revealed that the radius of curvature of the alternately stacked D-A assembly increased significantly, thereby leading to intervesicular fusion, which eventually resulted in rupturing of the membrane to form 1D fibers. Such 2D-to-1D morphological transition produced CT-mediated hydrogels at relatively higher concentrations. A simple and novel supramolecular approach for orthogonal self-assembly of donor and acceptor chromophores has been demonstrated. Suitably designed 1,5-dialkoxynaphthalene (DAN) and naphthalene tetracarboxylic acid diimide (NDI) derivatives were used as the donor and acceptor systems, respectively. The molecular design for self-sorting relies upon the precise control over the placement of the self-complementary hydrogen-bonding units (amide functionality) with respect to the individual chromophore. By design, the distances between the two amide groups in the donor and acceptor chromophores are not identical, and consequently the effect of the hydrogen-bonding interaction cannot be maximised in the case of alternate donor-acceptor-type pi-stacking. Thus a relatively weak charge-transfer interaction is expected to be sacrificed, and segregated assembly among the individual chromophores should be enforced by virtue of the much stronger effects of hydrogen bonding and pi-pi stacking. Detailed spectroscopic studies were carried out to probe the mode of self-assembly in various derivatives of the DAN-NDI donor-acceptor pairs to establish the utility of the molecular design as a generalised one for orthogonal self-assembly.

The synthesis, self-assembly, and gelation ability of a series of organogelators based on perylene bisimide (PBI) dyes containing amide groups at imide positions are reported. The synergetic effect of intermolecular hydrogen bonding among the amide functionalities and pi-pi stacking between the PBI units directs the formation of the self-assembled structure in solution, which beyond a certain concentration results in gelation. Effects of different peripheral alkyl substituents on the self-assembly were studied by solvent- and temperature-dependent UV-visible and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. PBI derivatives containing linear alkyl side chains in the periphery formed H-type pi stacks and red gels, whereas by introducing branched alkyl chains the formation of J-type pi stacks and green gels could be achieved. Sterically demanding substituents, in particular, the 2-ethylhexyl group completely suppressed the pi stacking. Coaggregation studies with H- and J-aggregating chromophores revealed the formation of solely H-type pi stacks containing both precursor molecules at a lower mole fraction of J-aggregating chromophore. Beyond a critical composition of the two chromophores, mixed H-aggregate and J-aggregate were formed simultaneously, which points to a self-sorting process. The versatility of the gelators is strongly dependent on the length and nature of the peripheral alkyl substituents. CD spectroscopic studies revealed a preferential helicity of the aggregates of PBI building blocks bearing chiral side chains. Even for achiral PBI derivatives, the utilization of chiral solvents such as (R)- or (S)-limonene was effective in preferential population of one-handed helical fibers. AFM studies revealed the formation of helical fibers from all the present PBI gelators, irrespective of the presence of chiral or achiral side chains. Furthermore, vortex flow was found to be effective in macroscopic orientation of the aggregates as evidenced from the origin of CD signals from aggregates of achiral PBI molecules.
