Two new phenolic compounds, (1R,2R)-1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1-methoxypropan-2-ol (1) and (1S,2S)-1-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-1-ethoxypropan-2-ol (2), and one known analog (3) have been isolated from the methanol extract of Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua flowers and identified by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HSQC, HMBC, HR-ESI-MS, and optical rotations. In addition, compounds 1–3 displayed potential aldose reductase inhibitory activity with IC50 values of 22.16, 17.63, and 28.74 μM, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new cyclohexanone derivative (stipularone) was isolated from the leaves of Bridelia stipularis (L.) Blume and characterized using 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy (PMR, 13C NMR, HSQC, DEPT-135, COSY, and HMBC) and HR-ESI-MS. Four known compounds were also identified, 3-(4′-hydroxyphenyl)-2-propenoic acid (4′′-carboxyl)-phenyl ester, β-amyrin, scopoletin, and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, by comparing their 1H NMR spectra with published results. In the present study, phenolic constituents from the rhizomes of D. bonii were isolated and their antibacterial and antioxidant activities were determined. A new compound and eight known phenolic compounds were isolated from the ethanol extract of D. bonii. The structure of the new compound was characterized by spectroscopic analysis as 3-(5-hydroxymethyl)furan-2-yl)-2-phenylacrylaldehyde ( 9), along with chrysophanol ( 1), nobiletin ( 2), protocatechuic acid ( 3), protocatechualdehyde ( 4), isoliquiritigenin ( 5), rutin ( 6), nicotiflorin ( 7), and linocaffein ( 8). These compounds were isolated from this plant for the first time. Most of the compounds demonstrated antibacterial and antioxidant activities, with compound 4 demonstrating especially potent antioxidant effects (SC 4.87 μg/mL) in the DPPH test. Phoma is a phytopathogenic fungus known to produce an array of bioactive extracellular toxic compounds. The bioactive compound was isolated by solvent extraction of the cell-free culture filtrate of Phoma followed by chromatographic purification. The structure of the compound was establish to be 1-hydroxy-4-(3,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-pentan-3-one on the basis of spectroscopic studies. new phenolic glycoside was isolated from the stems of Acanthopanax senticosus together with sixteen known compounds. The organic acid, tocopherol, and phenolic compositions of three different grape cultivars, Emir, Kalecik karasi, and Narince were studied in order to evaluate their nutritive values and the contents of natural antioxidants. Organic acids, tocopherols, phenolic acids, flavonoids, and trans-resveratrol contents were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In addition, pH, soluble solid, titratable acidity, and total phenolic contents were also determined. Five phenolic compounds, including a new phenolic glycoside, 2-hydroxycyclohexyl-6′- O- p-coumaroyl-β-D-glucopyranoside, as well as the known flavonoids, naringenin, kaempferol, quercetin and luteolin, were isolated from the wood of Populus davidiana by repeated column chromatography over Sephadex LH-20.
