Palladium nanoparticles have been dispersed uniformly throughout a microporous poly(aryleneethynylene) material by the infusion of a CO2-soluble Pd precursor. The resulting composite has good thermal stability and has potential applications for example in heterogeneous catalysis. The porosity of the polymeric support was maintained after inclusion of the metal and the hydrogen uptake at room temperature was increased with respect to the unloaded porous support.

Bifunctional periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs) with —CH2—CH2—/—CH═CH— bridges have been synthesized using a salt assisted nonionic templating method. The ability to direct locations of the individual organic groups using a novel silica precursor prehydrolysis step is demonstrated. Depending on the prehydrolysis conditions the products showed either structural heterogeneities consisting of domains of the same functionality or a structurally homogeneous system, confirmed by 1H−29Si heteronuclear correlation (HETCOR) experiments. The resulting PMOs show large pore volumes (up to 1.34 cm3 g−1) and high surface areas (up to 1310 m2 g−1). The ability to form domain structures within the same mesostructure may have potential applications in molecular recognition and separation.

A series of hypercrosslinked polymer networks has been synthesized by the self-condensation of bischloromethyl monomers such as dichloroxylene (DCX), 4,4‘-bis(chloromethyl)-1,1‘-biphenyl (BCMBP), and 9,10-bis(chloromethyl)anthracene (BCMA). These materials are predominantly microporous and exhibit Brunauer−Emmett−Teller (BET) surface areas of up to 1904 m2/g as measured by N2 adsorption at 77.3 K (Langmuir surface area = 2992 m2/g). Networks based on BCMBP exhibit a gravimetric storage capacity of 3.68 wt % at 15 bar and 77.3 K, the highest yet reported for an organic polymer. The micro- and mesostructure of the networks is explained by a combination of solid-state NMR, gas sorption measurements, pycnometry, and molecular simulations. The isosteric heat of sorption for H2 on these materials is found to be in the range 6−7.5 kJ/mol.
