Naphthobispyrazine (NPz), a family of naphthalene-based electron-deficient fused heteroaromatic rings, and its derivatives including a polymer are efficiently synthesized via the ring-opening reaction of corresponding naphthobisthiadiazole derivatives. The electrochemical and optical measurements of the NPz-based molecules and polymers revealed that NPz has relatively weak electron deficiency and thus affords medium band-gap polymers. The photovoltaic properties of the polymer, in combination with PC61BM, were also studied.

An Electroluminescence (EL) of porous silicon in the electrolyte of Na2SO4 + S2O82− at the cathodic bias was greatly enhanced as much as 30 times by adding C2H5OH. The dependence of EL spectra on cathodic bias potential was also detected similarly to as that without C2H5OH. The enhancement mechanism of EL was discussed considering with the current density dependence during EL emission in the electrolyte with and without C2H5OH.

By using the electropolymerization of pyrrole from aqueous solutions of Na2CO3 for NaHCO3, flat and pinhole-less insulating films were obtained due to the self-leveling and self-saturation effects. The influences of the supporting electrolyte and of the additive (N-methylpyrrole) to the NaOH polymerization solution were also investigated to produce the insulating PPy films having some different properties.

Electroactivity of polypyrrole/polystyrenesulfonate composite film obtained from an aqueous solution was examined in various organic electrolytes. The composite film worked like electroinactive film in electrolyte using propylene carbonate or some solvents except in the case of DMF or DMSO electrolytes, however, the film changed from electroinactive to electroactive even in propylene carbonate and some organic electrolytes after an electrochemical potential application to the film while in DMF or DMSO electrolytes.

Compositional inhomogeneity in electroless-deposited CoNiP films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy was examined using the spin echo 59Co-NMR technique for the first time. The existence of a Co-rich component was observed which was thought to cause the formation of an hcp structure and produce high perpendicular coercivity, Hc(⊥). An increment in the Co-rich component by heat-treatment was also observed which might be an origin of the increase in Hc(⊥).

Thin films of electroinactive polypyrrole(PPy) were electropolymerized in NaOH aqueous solutions on ITO(indium tin oxide) electrode. The PPy films were used at as-prepared condition without undoping process. The metal-insulator-metal(MIM) structure was fabricated by sputtering ITO on the PPy films to give ITO/PPy/ITO devices. The devices showed non-linear and symmetric I–V characteristics, where the currents sharply increased at ca. ±5 V.

The process of preparation of FePt nanoparticles was investigated with emphasis on the effect of "growth temperature," at which the atomic diffusion between Pt-rich and Fe-rich phases leads to the formation of uniform nanoparticles. Consequently, it was demonstrated that by controlling the growth temperature, the shape and crystallinity of FePt nanoparticles can be controlled. On the other hand, the size and composition were almost invariable at 5.6 ± 0.5 nm and Fe 53 Pt 47 , respectively.

A mesoporous Sn anode was electrodeposited in the presence of lyotropic liquid crystals made of nonionic surfactants. The introduction of mesoporous structure was effective for the accommodation of volume change of Sn during charge and discharge cycling of Li ions. The discharge capacity of the mesoporous Sn anode at 1 C rate was as high as 425 mA h g(-1) at the 100th cycle, and that was as high as 320 mA It g(-1) at the 100th cycle even though at 5 degrees C rate.

Formation of organosilane monolayer templates using ultraviolet and electron-beam (EB) lithography was investigated. The oligonucleotides were covalently immobilized with high selectivity only to the amino-monolayer modified regions locally formed on the template surfaces at micro and nanometer scale. By using EB lithography, patterned immobilization in nanometer scale, as small as 20 nm, was achieved.

Nanometer-size particles of iron oxide were prepared by a successive reduction–oxidation of ferric or ferrous ions within reverse micelles. Nanoparticles of iron oxide were collected from reverse micellar solution as precipitates by adding modifier molecules. The X-ray diffraction patterns and magnetic properties of thus-prepared samples suggested the formation of nanocrystalline phase of maghemite, γ-Fe2O3.
