The chemical lithium intercalation of a layered perovskite LiLaNb2O7 compound has been performed by using n-butyllithium. The content of inserted lithium ions was found to be ca. 1 mol per unit formula. The crystal structure of the intercalated compound was determined by the powder X-ray diffraction pattern. An unusual contraction of the cell volume inherent in the intercalation reaction was observed.

A sol-gel method was applied to prepare thin films of LiLnSiO4 (Ln = La,Sm). The coating solution was made from lithium isopropoxide, silicon tetraethoxide, and tris(acetylacetonato)rare-earth. Well crystalline films with 0.1∼0.3 μm in thickness were obtained on alumina and quartz glass substrates by spin-coating, followed by firing over 400 °C. The lithium ionic conductivity of the films was much greater than that of sintered samples prepared by a conventional solid state reaction at 1000 °C.

LiYSiO4 was synthesized by sol-gel method and its crystal structure was determined by the Rietveld analysis. The structure was found to be an olivine-type structure with orthorhombic Pnma space group. The thin film deposited on an quartz substrate could be prepared by a dip-coating method using sol solutions consisting of lithium i-propoxides, silicon tetraethoxide and yttrium acetate.
