A charcoal-supported rhodium catalyst was highly active and selective to decalin for the hydrogenation of naphthalene at very low temperature (333 K) under supercritical carbon dioxide.

Abstract

Novel anion ionophores based on thiouronium derivatives were synthesized, and their application to ion selective electrodes (ISEs) was examined. The electrodes clearly exhibited an anti-Hofmeister selectivity pattern with enhanced selectivity for the iodide anion.

Abstract

The conformationally-immobile biscalix[4]arene was synthesized by connecting the upper rims with two spacers. It showed high inclusion ability and selectivity for quaternary ammonium ions. A comparison with reference compounds established that the enhanced selectivity is due to the cooperative action of two bowl-shaped calix[4]arenes.

Abstract

Against a frequently held view in organic chemistry, it was proposed that the selectivity is enhanced by the reactivity in a certain class of reactions. The reactivity-enhanced selectivity (RES) theory was experimentally confirmed by the π-facial selectivities in the Diels-Alder reactions of 5-phenylthiocyclopentadiene dependent on the reactivities of dienophiles.
