Changes in surface and bulk structures of rutile titania particles induced by braying up to 10 d and post calcination in air at 773 K were analyzed by reversed double-beam photoacoustic spectroscopy. The observed energy-resolved distribution of electron traps indicated that the surface was amorphized by braying to give rutile-core amorphous-shell structure and the amorphous layer was partly recrystallized by post-calcination leaving grain boundaries in the surface layers, both of which may cause the observed markedly decreased photocatalytic activities.

Poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) monoliths were prepared from a solution of linear PBT solution by cooling induced phase separation. Stable single phase mixed electron/proton conductor with excellent capacitance property from oxygen functionalized porous carbon (OPC) has been presented herein. Electrochemical study suggested that at room temperature and 90%RH the values of electronic and prototonic conductivity of OPC are 1.68 × 10-3 Scm-1 and 3.14 × 10-5 Scm-1, respectively. Moreover, the specific capacitance of 204 Fg-1 at 10 mVs-1 is observed. The improved electrochemical performance of OPC mostly associated with transformation of high temperature treated inert carbon into an electrochemically active substance and ionic movement associated with oxygen functionalized groups in carbon surface during oxidation.

A single-step synthetic method was developed to obtain ultrafine MgO nanocrystals by ultimately simple solvothermal treatment of a precursor solution containing magnesium acetylacetonate in acetonitrile at 400 °C for 10 min. HRTEM images and calculations based on Scherer equation showed that the average size of obtained ultrafine MgO nanocrystals was ca. 7 nm.

Water dispersible metal complex nanoparticles were synthesized using the polyethylene glycol (PEG) coating method. The χmT values at room temperature for the NPs 1–3 were calculated using the Evans method, and the proton relaxation times, T1 and T2, were measured employing MRI. Titania samples containing octahedral anatase particles (OAPs) were prepared by the ultrasonication­hydrothermal process of partially proton-exchanged potassium titanate nanowires. It was found that increase in the ultrasonication time changed the product morphology, with other structural properties such as specific surface area, crystalline size, and crystallinity remaining almost constant. The results of photocatalytic activity tests for those samples suggested higher activity of a sampl ew ith higher OAP content, especially for reactions in the presence of oxygen.

A growing number of papers on research subjects relating to photocatalysis have and will continue to be submitted and published in scientific journals. Some of these, published or still under review, include illusions and misconceptions that may, from a scientific point of view, adversely affect the writing of academic papers and hamper the development of scientific and technological research in this field. In the present article, the author would like to point out the problems that researchers in photocatalysis encounter when writing articles. In fact, one of the most serious concerns regarding the abstracts contained in most scientific papers is that they often include misleading speculation(s) which are not based on sound scientific evidence yet may be interpreted as truth. A fair number of readers, especially busy ones, may read only the titles and abstracts without serious consideration or analysis of the discussions. Reviewers and editors need to consider such problems, as might be expected, however, the reader community also needs to be instructed of such aspects in order to gain a more correct understanding of what is and is not acceptable. This article aims to present an analysis of such inherent problems in hopes of improving the quality of the research work and scientific papers in this field.

Herein, we report a strategy to fabricate a three-dimensional amorphous arrangement of gold nanoparticles from eccentric gold­polymer hybrid particles. The arrangement of the gold nanoparticles in the three-dimensional colloida ll attice of the hybrid particles was amorphous because of the disordered orientation of the gold nanoparticles in each polymer bead. The amorphous arrangement was different from ordinary random structures, since it had a particular short-range order. Such an amorphous arrangement should have the potentia lf or use i na new class o ff unctional materials.

Tungsten(VI) oxide loaded with nanoparticulate platinum (Pt/WO3) was demonstrated for the first time to exhibit photocatalytic activity for direct synthesis of phenol from benzene using water and molecular oxygen as reactants under ultraviolet or visible light irradiation; the selectivity for phenol (e.g., 74% at 69% of benzene conversion) on Pt/WO3 photocatalysts was much higher than those on platinum-loaded titanium(IV) oxide (Pt/TiO2) photocatalysts.

Separation and determination of boric acid by reversed-phase liquid chromatography with conductivity detection have been demonstrated. D-Sorbitol was used as a precolumn complexing agent for boric acid and water as the mobile phase. The detection limit was 20 ng ml−1.
