This paper presents the the main scientific and innovative results are presented, which were obtained by the talented chemist and renowned ecologist Valeriu Ropot throughout his scientific career. The results of scientific investigations are bestowed and analysed concerning the quality of the waters of the Dniester and the Prut Rivers, Dubasari reservoirs on the Dniester River, as well as the main bodies of water in the Republic of Moldova. The paper also includes the practical recommendations for reducing the negative impact on the environment, of the discharge of hundreds of thousands of tons of brine into the Dniester River as a result of the accident at the mineral fertilizer plant in the city of Stebnik, Ukraine. Moreover, the paper presents the results of studies aimed at developing methods for determining organic and inorganic pollutants in natural waters.

The research results have marked a low value of the self-purification capacity for Beleu Lake water, between 0.12 and 0.19, which is of 1.2-2 times smaller than the one from Prut River (0.25), correlating positively with the values of BOD5, COD-Cr and the time of biochemical oxidation of ammonium ions. The evolution of stage NH4+(NH3) → NO2- in the process of nitrification in lake water in November 2014 takes place about 25 days and the process NO2- → NO3- - more than 35 days, the duration about 2 times higher than in lake water stages from 2015 and 2.8-3.0 times higher than that of the model with water from Prut River.

The present study estimates chemical composition and status of the groundwater from the Dniester river basin. Research includes defining of springs/fountains location, evaluating physicochemical features of water, highlighting of main pollutants and pollution sources, establishing of water type and quality. The research was achieved within the State Program "Scientific research and water quality management".

As sources of water supply in the Republic of Moldova underground waters constitute 15,2% (bore holes, springs and wells). The present work includes water quality investigations and aims to reveal local sources in river Nistru hydrographic basin (Rezina district) for drinking water provision in villages. Chemical composition of investigated spring’s water shows that in Rezina district 19% of springs are polluted with nitrogen compounds. Water of only 9% of springs is in conformity with the standard for drinking water. Water from 102 springs meets the requirements of irrigation that doesn’t present the risk of soil salinization (K > 18) – 1 383 L/min.
