4,6-Dimethyl-2,2′-dipyridyl-dicarbonyl-nickel (O) kristalisiert in der monoklinen Raumgruppe P21/c mit den Gitterkonstanten a = 7,275(1) A, b = 17,954(4) A, c = 10,627(2) A, β = 105,3(3)°. Die Zahl der Formeleinheiten betragt vier. Die Koordinationsgeometrie des Nickels ist tetraedrisch. Dei beiden Pyridinringe sind um 4,3° gegeneinander verdrillt. Quantenchemische NDDO-rechnungen zur konformativen Struktur von 4,6− und 3,6-Dimethyl-2,2′-dipyridyl ergaben fur das 3,6-Dimethylsubstituierte Diiminmolekul eine trans-cis-Energiedifferenz von 87,3 kJ mol−1. Eine Darstellung des entsprechenden 3,6-Dimethyl-2,2′-dipyridyl-Komplexes gelang nicht. Confromational Behaviour of Dimethyl-2,2-′-dipyridyl Ligands. Crystal Structure of 4,6-Dimethyl-2,2′-dipyridyl-dicarbonylnickel(0) 4,6-Dimethyl-2,2′-dipyridyl-dicarbonyl-nickel (O) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with the lattice constants a = 7.275 (1)A, b = 17.954 (4)A, c = 10.627 (2)A, β = 105.3° and 4 formula units in the unit cell. The coordination geometry of the nickel atom is tetrahedral. The torsion angle between the pyridyl rings is 4.3°. Quantum chemical calculations with the NDDO method resulted in an energy difference of 87.3 kJ mol−1 between the cis and trans structure of 3, 6-dimethyl-2, 2′-dipyridyl. The preparation of the analogous 3, 6-dimethyl-2, 2′-dipyridyl complex was not successful.

The conformational structure of some typical α-diimine ligands (2,2′-bipyridyl, glyoxaldiimine, glyoxal-N,N′-dimethyldiimine) is examined using the NDDO method. An analysis of the potential energy curves indicates the influence of specific lone-pair effects on the molecular structure. Based on a continuum model, changes of the molecular arrangement caused by solvent effects are estimated.

IR- und elektronenspektroskopische Untersuchungen an [Co(phen)2X2]-Komplexen (XF−, Cl−, Br−, J−, NCS−, NCO−, NO3−, SO−, ClO4−, HCOO−, H3CCOO−, H5C2COO−, n-H7C3COO− und Salicylat) wurden zur weiteren Charakterisierung dieses Koordinationstyps durchgefuhrt. Die Untersuchungsergebnisse deuten auf cis-oktaedrische Ligandenanordnung in diesen Verbindungen hin. Aus den v1- und v3-Ubergangen der Elektronenspektren wurden die Ligandenfeldparameter B und Dq berechnet sowie die Lage des Zweielektronenubergangs v2 bestimmt. Die [Co(phen)2X2]-Verbindungen unterliegen in Losung Symmetriegleichgewichten zwischen pseudooktaedrischer und -tetraedrischer Ligandenanordnung, die auf Komplexdisproportionierung zuruckzufuhren ist. Die grune Form des Chloridkomplexes konnte isoliert und als [Co(phen)Cl2] identifiziert werden. On Bis(phenanthroline) cobalt(II) Complexes Spectrophotometric investigations of [Co(phen)2X2] complexes in the IR and UV/VIS region are described. The results of this investigations show cis octahedral arrangement of the ligands. From the v1- and v3-transitions of the electronic spectra the LF parameters B and Dq are calculated and from this the two electron transition v2 is estimated. [Co(phen)2X2] complexes show symmetry equilibria between octahedral and tetrahedral forms in solutions by reason of complex disproportionation reactions. The green form of the chloride complex could be isolated and identificated as [Co(phen)Cl2].

The structure and conformational behaviour of mono-and di-protonated 2,2′-bipyridine are investigated by a semi-empirical NDDO method. Whereas monoprotonated 2,2′-bipyridine exists in a planar cisoid arrangement, two stable twisted conformations are obtained for the diprotonated cation.
