Stilbenes react with the hypervalent iodine compound (II) as nitrogen source to give intermediate imines which undergo iron catalyzed conversion into various benzamides in the presence of air.

Iodination of areneboronic acids by perfluoroisopropyl iodide in the presence of Cu powder gives aryl iodides in high yields, while with cupric acetate perfluoroalkylation occurs to provide perfluoroisopropyl arenes in acceptable to moderate yields.

Described herein is a novel palladium-catalyzed C–N bond-formation reaction employing aryltrimethylgermanes as the new arylating reagents. Primary/secondary amines or even amides could be smoothly arylated to provide the corresponding N-arylation products in moderate to excellent yields.

The enantioselective formal [3 + 3] annulation reaction of isatin-derived β,γ-unsaturated α-ketoesters with 3-hydroxy-4H-chromen-4-ones or 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone was successfully implemented under catalysis of quinine-derived bifunctional tertiary amine-thiourea catalysts. The efficient tandem Michael-cyclization has provided facile access to optically active spiro[oxindole-pyrano[3,2-b]chromenone] and spiro[oxindole-benzo[g]chromene-dione] derivatives in high yields with excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivities.

An oxidant-free dehydrogenative sulfonylation of α-methyl-styrene derivatives was developed for the construction of allylic sulfones by using eosin Y as a photosensitizer in conjunction with a cobaloxime catalyst. The process features a low-cost metal catalyst and atom economy, which provides an appealing strategy for future synthetic chemistry.

An efficient method, tandem [3 + 2] cycloaddition–decarboxylation of α-keto acid and isocyanide promoted by copper salt, has been developed. Under oxidant-free conditions, a series monosubstituted oxazoles have been constructed. Different from the traditional application of α-oxo acids as acyl surrogates, the elegant approach herein ingeniously avoids consuming excess oxidants.

The novel N,N′-ligand (BSI) is air-stable, easily available and highly modulated with low copper loading.

Chiral o -aniline sulfoxides serving as chiral sulfurous source were synthesized, from which new sulfonamide-pyridine ligands were made in three-steps. These compounds proved to be efficient S , N -ligands for enantiocontrol of palladium-catalyzed allylic substitutions of dimethyl 2-fluoromalonate. The induced effect of the Pd/ S , N -ligand catalyst on the enantioselectivity depends on the steric demand of the substituent on the sulfoxide moiety. This method provided the fluorine-containing allylic products with up to 94% ee .

A nucleophilic addition/cyclization/aromatization cascade of aromatic alkenes/alkynes, trimethylsilyl cyanide, and N,N-disubstituted formamides gives pyrroles in moderate to good yields with high regioselectivities.

A three-component reaction of isatin, 3-methyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-5-amine, and piperidine-2,4-dione was treated in ionic liquids catalyzed by TsOH and provided an efficient and green method for the synthesis of spiro[indoline-3,4′-pyrazolo[3, 4-b][1,6]naphthyridine]-2,5′(1′H)-dione derivatives in high yields.

With Et3N·3HF as the fluorination reagent, (IPr)CuF-catalyzed α-site regiocontrolled trans-hydrofluorination of ynamides has been achieved, affording (Z)-α-fluoroenamides in moderate to excellent yields. It was interesting to note that the regioselectivity of the reaction is reversed to that observed in the (Ph3P)3CuF-catalyzed hydrofluorination of ynamides. Additionally, a variety of different ynamides including oxazolidinonyl-, imidazolyl-, and N-sulfonyl ynamides were suitable for the reaction system and the subsequent oxidation of the fluorinated products enables a convenient synthesis to α-fluoroimides.

A rhodium(III)-catalyzed C–H/N–H bond functionalization for the synthesis of 1-aminoisoquinolines from aryl amidines and α-MsO/TsO/Cl ketones was achieved under mild reaction conditions. Thus, this approach provides a practical method for the site-selective synthesis of various synthetically valuable isoquinolines with wide functional group tolerance.

A novel layered SnSSe material is designed as a high-performance anode for sodium-ion batteries with characteristics of high capacity, superior cyclability, facile synthetic method, and large-scale production ability. The transformation from bulk SnSSe particles into closely packed nanoplate aggregates with greater resistance to structure pulverization and the partial pseudocapacitive capacity contribution may engender excellent cycling performance and rate capability.

Aryl carbamates were for the first time applied as electrophiles in the cross-coupling with arylsilanes via nickel or iron catalysis to construct valuable biaryl compounds. This new coupling reaction features a good group tolerance and non-sensitivity to steric hindrance on both aryl carbamates and arylsilanes.

A formal [4 + 1] annulation of readily available α-arylhydrazonoketones and trimethylsulfoxonium iodide in the presence of cesium carbonate is described involving a sequential Corey–Chaykovsky reaction and intramolecular nucleophilic cyclization process. Substituted pyrazoles were obtained exclusively from the reactions of α-arylhydrazono-β-oxo-amides and trimethylsulfoxonium iodide in moderate to good yields, whereas the reactions of α-arylhydrazono-β-oxo-ketone/α-arylhydrazono- β-oxo-ester afforded the corresponding dihydropyrazoles in good yields.

Personalized theranostics of cancer is increasingly desired, and can be realized by virtue of multifunctional nanomaterials with possible high performances. Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) are a type of especially promising candidate for cancer theranostics, because their synthesis and modification are facile, their structures and physicochemical properties are flexibly controlled, and they are also biocompatible. Especially, the localized surface plasmon resonance and multivalent coordination effects on the surface endow them with NIR light-triggered photothermal imaging and therapy, controlled drug release, and targeted drug delivery. Although the structure, properties, and theranostic application of GNPs are considerably plentiful, no expert review systematically explains the relationships among their structure, property. and application and induces the engineering rationales of GNPs for cancer theranostics. Hence, there are no clear rules to guide the facile construction of optimal GNP structures aiming at a specific theranostic application. A series of structural-engineering rationales of GNPs for cancer theranostics is proposed through digging out the deep relationships between the structure and properties of GNPs. These rationales will be inspiring for guiding the engineering of specific and advanced GNPs for personalized cancer theranostics.

Potassium-based energetic complexes are environmentally friendly compared to their traditional heavy metal counterparts. They also have higher energy densities and better thermal stabilities than the parent organic compounds due to the deprotonation and introduction of the potassium cation. According to the anion ligands, they can be classified as nitrophenol-, furazan-, furoxan-, triazole-, tetrazole-, and their derivative-based potassium complexes. More than 20 potassium complexes have been prepared, with their crystal structures analyzed and properties characterized, demonstrating their superiority to traditional energetic materials. Multi-coordinated potassium cations facilitate the formation of energetic three-dimensional metal–organic frameworks, making them better candidates as energetic materials for both defense and civil applications.

A tandem annulation of arylpropynols with disulfides has been developed for the synthesis of 2-sulfenylindenone derivatives. The reaction pathway involves one-pot tandem Meyer–Schuster rearrangement of arylpropynols and successive radical cyclization with disulfides. Various arylpropynols and disulfides with a number of functional groups are compatible in this reaction that affords the corresponding 2-sulfenylindenones in moderate to good yields.

Natural products have long been an important source for the discovery of biologically active compounds, in particular, drug leads. Delavatine A (1), a structurally unusual cyclopenta[de]isoquinoline alkaloid, was isolated from Incarvillea delavayi. Extensive spectroscopic analysis, in combination with biogenetic speculation, established the structure of 1. Delavatine A (1) exhibited considerable cytotoxicity against a number of cancer cell lines with IC50 values in the range of 4.28 to 6.61 μg mL−1.

A chemoselective C-O bond cleavage of the ester alkyl side-chain of α-acyloxy ketones was realized for the first time by a highly efficient palladium-catalyzed hydrogenolysis (S/C=6000, the highest catalytic efficiency by far). Furthermore, a kinetic resolution of α-acyloxy ketones was first developed by enantioselective hydrogenolysis with good yields and up to 99 % ee.

A tetraphosphoramidite ligand was successfully applied to a Rh-catalyzed hydroformylation of various symmetrical and unsymmetrical alkynes to afford corresponding α,β-unsaturated aldehyde products in good to excellent yields (up to 97% yield). Excellent chemo- and regioselectivities and high activities (up to 20 000 TON) were achieved. The corresponding α,β-unsaturated aldehyde products can be transformed into many useful and important organic molecules, such as indenamine derivatives and lukianol pyrroles. This great performance makes the hydroformylation of alkynes highly practical with great potential.

e-Fe 3 N can be flexibly synthesized via a sol-gel route by using ethylenediamine as the nitrogen source, and the role of ethylenediamine can be demonstrated by adjusting the molar ratio of ethanediamine to acetone. Excellent magnetic properties (72.35 emu/g) and coercivity are obtained at the optimized condition, showing the potential applications in magnetic material field. In addition, the probable formation mechanism of iron nitride is investigated in this article, supported by XRD patterns and etc, which has important effect on the further research of the iron nitride via a sol-gel route.

A one-pot, three-component coupling reaction of pyridine, β-keto amides, and sulfonyl chlorides yields 4-alkenyl-1,4-dihydropyridines under mild conditions via sequential activation of pyridine by the sulfonyl chloride and nucleophilic addition of in situ generated acylacetonitrile.

The first asymmetric catalytic aldol–cyclization reaction of detrifluoroacetylatively in situ generated enolates with methyl 2-formylbenzoate is reported. This reaction tolerates a wide range of substrates, affording fluorinated quaternary stereogenic α,α-dialkyl/cyclo-alkyl-β-ketoesters with good yields, high diastereo- (94% de) and enantioselectivity (96% ee) at room temperature.

Luminescence property of low-concentration Eu2+-doped SrAlSi4N7:Ce3+ yellow phosphor is reported in this paper. Three optical centers Ce1, Ce2, and Eu2 are observed in the phosphor. Deconvolution of emission spectrum confirms the three centers to be green (530 nm), yellow (580 nm), and red (630 nm), respectively. This property promises considerable improvement of color-rendering property of a white light-emitting diode (wLED). For example, color-rendering index (CRI) of wLED fabricated by combining a blue LED chip and SrAlSi4N7:0.05Ce3+,0.01Eu2+ phosphor reaches 88. A competitive energy transfer process between Ce1–Ce2 and Ce1–Eu2 is confirmed based on Inokuti–Hirayama formula. Ratio of energy transfer rate between Ce1–Ce2 and Ce1–Eu2 (WCe1–Eu2/WCe1–Ce2) is calculated to be 2.0. This result reveals the effect of Eu2+ concentration on quantity of green and red components in SrAlSi4N7:Ce3+,Eu2+ phosphor.

Green methods for the synthesis of S-aryl phosphorothioates have been developed based on copper-catalyzed multicomponent reactions involving diaryliodonium/arenediazonium salts, elemental sulfur, and R2P(O)H compounds. Most target products are obtained with these two methods in good to high yields at room temperature. These transformations allow the direct formation P–S and C–S bonds in one reaction.

Copper oxide nanoparticles have been applied as an efficient catalyst for the formation of C–N bonds. They can catalyze diaminations for the regiospecific synthesis of 1,2-disubstituted benzimidazoles from 1,2-dihaloarenes and N-arylamidines. The best performance has been achieved using CuO nanoparticles with average diameter of 6.5 nm. A convenient and highly α-regioselective strategy for the synthesis of 3-prenyl-3-hydroxy-2-oxindoles has been developed starting from isatins and prenylzinc with good to excellent yields. This protocol provides a straightforward and practical way to introduce an α-prenyl moiety into the C-3 position of isatins. The advantages of this reaction are use of the cheap and readily available reagents, operational simplicity, and wide substrate scope. Furthermore, this transformation was applied to the synthesis of several oxindole-containing natural products, which further demonstrated the synthetic utility of this methodology.

Cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) is robust in encapsulating a stacking dimer of two identical or different aromatic units in water. In recent years, this ternary host–guest complexation motif has found wide applications in constructing supramolecular systems by noncovalently connecting molecular, supramolecular and polymeric precursors. This review summarises the important advance, in particular, in the generation of linear supramolecular polymers and extended supramolecular networks including periodic supramolecular organic frameworks.

We present a metal-free [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition of ynamides with nitriles that enables highly efficient access to 2,4-diaminopyridines. This catalytic protocol is more environmentally friendly and allows for a concomitant construction of C–C and C–N bonds between ynamides and nitriles, exhibiting excellent chemoselectivity, regioselectivity, and wide functional groups tolerance.

This review summarizes the recent progress of efficient room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) from pure organic luminogens achieved by crystallization-induced phosphorescence (CIP), with focus on the advances in our group. Besides homocrystals, mixed crystals and cocrystals are also discussed. Meanwhile, intriguing RTP emission from the luminogens without conventional chromophores is demonstrated.

A one-pot sequential asymmetric hydrogenation of β-aryl-β-aryloxy acroleins has been realized for the preparation of chiral 3-aryl-3-aryloxy alcohols with excellent yields and good enantioselectivities. This methodology can be employed in new synthetic routes for the synthesis of fluoxetine, atomoxetine, and related analogues.

Hyperhexanones A (1) and B (2), two novel polycyclic polyprenylated acylphloroglucinol (PPAPs) derivatives, were isolated from Hypericum sampsonii. Compound 1 possesses a novel 1,2-seco-bicyclo[3.3.1]-PPAP skeleton, which represents a crucial intermediate from bicyclo[3.3.1]-PPAPs to the peculiar cyclohexanone monocyclic-PPAPs (CM-PPAPs). A plausible biogenetic pathway was proposed to discuss the origins of the CM-PPAPs.

As a new emerging area in chemical sensing, sensing using supramolecular aggregates exhibits unique advantages over that using conventional small-molecule chemical sensors, in terms of high sensitivity and selectivity, and the simplicity of the sensory building blocks. This Feature Article outlines the recent research progress made in sensing based on induced supramolecular aggregation–disaggregation. The reviewed sensory building blocks, in general, in the form of a small molecular sensor, yet with a much simpler structure, which form aggregates, are those of perylene derivatives, pyrene derivatives, tetraphenylethylene derivatives, metallophilic species and metal–organic frameworks.

Catalyzed by a rhodium complex of P-stereogenic diphosphine ligand trichickenfootphos (TCFP), asymmetric hydrogenation of racemic aldimines via dynamic kinetic resolution has been realized for the preparation of chiral arylglycines with good yields and enantioselectivities.

(+)- and (−)-Ganodilactone (1), a pair of novel meroterpenoid dimers possessing a unique 5′H-spiro[chroman-4,2′-furan]-2,5′-dione ring system, along with their biogeneticly-related compound, ganomycin I (2), were discovered from the fruiting bodies of Ganoderma leucocontextum. The structures and absolute configurations were assigned with the aid of 1D and 2D NMR spectra, HRESIMS analysis and ECD calculations. (±)-, (+)-, and (−)-ganodilactone (1) showed pancreatic lipase inhibitory activities and exhibited the IC50 values as 27.3, 4.0, and 2.5 μM, respectively.

The efficient, highly enantioselective preparation of a variety of tetralone derivatives with two contiguous stereocenters and diverse functional groups is described.

A cobalt(III)-catalyzed C–H/N–H bond functionalization for the synthesis of 1-aminoisoquinolines from aryl amidines and diazo compounds has been developed. The reaction proceeds under mild reaction conditions, obviates the need for oxidants, produces only N2 and H2O as the byproducts, and features a broad substrate scope.

The novel cascade photoredox/iodide catalytic system enables the alkene to serve as a radical acceptor capable of achieving aminodifluoroalkylation of alkenes. Cheap iodide salts play a vital role in this reaction, which could tune carbocation reactivity through reversible C–I bond formation for controlling reaction selectivity, and a series of competitive reactions are completely eliminated in the presence of multiple reactivity pathways. The present dual catalytic protocol affords a very convenient method for direct synthesis of various difluoro-γ-lactams from simple and readily available starting materials under mild reaction conditions.

A potential ultraviolet (UV) nonlinear optical (NLO) material, K3B3O4(OH)4·2H2O, was successfully synthesized by hydrothermal methods. The compound crystallizes into the Cmc21 space group and exhibits isolated [B3O4(OH)4]3– anion groups connected by O–H···O hydrogen bonds. The UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectrum shows that K3B3O4(OH)4·2H2O has a wide transparency range with an absorption edge below 190 nm. Powder second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements using 1064 nm radiation revealed a moderate efficiency, 0.8 × KDP. Additional particle size vs SHG efficiency measurements indicate that K3B3O4(OH)4·2H2O is type I phase-matchable. Our calculated results show that the borate groups as well as the waters of hydration determine the NLO properties of K3B3O4(OH)4·2H2O.

The first asymmetric synthesis of spiro-γ-lactam oxindoles bearing three stereocenters is reported. One-pot thiol-Michael/Mannich/lactamization reactions promoted by a recyclable fluorous bifunctional cinchona alkaloid/thiourea organocatalyst afford products in moderate to good yields with up to 95% ee and 6:1 dr.

The first metal-free phosphinoylation–cyclization–aromatization method has been developed. The present methodology produces a series of substituted 3-phosphinoylquinolines in moderate to good yields from N-propargylanilines and H-phosphine oxides mediated by tert-butyl hydroperoxide.

A facile and efficient synthesis of fully substituted 5-amino­isoxazoles was developed from α-cyclopropyl β-oximyl amides in the presence of triflic anhydride (Tf2O) in DMF under very mild conditions. The process involves sequential ring-opening and intramolecular cyclization reactions.
