Treatment of gem-dibromocyclopropanes with trialkylmanganate, derived from manganese(II) chloride and three equivalents of Grignard reagent or alkyllithium, followed by an addition of electrophiles provided dialkylated cyclopropanes in good yields. It was found the reaction with alkylmagnesium halide proceeded in the presence of a catalytic amount of manganese(II) chloride.

Treatment of dibromomethyltrialkylsilanes with butylmagnesium bromide in the presence of a catalytic amount of manganese(II) chloride provided ( E )-1-trialkylsilyl-1-pentenes with high stereoselectivity in good yields.

A new method for forming allyldimethylmanganate has been developed. The preparation eliminated the need for prior generation of an allylmetal species such as allyllithium or allylmagnesium compounds. The reagents reacted with epoxides to give allylated products exclusively in good yields.

A three-component coupling reaction was performed. Treatment of 1,3-dibromopropene or 1,3-dichloropropene with tributylmanganate (n-Bu3MnLi) provided a butylated allylmanganese compound which could be trapped by an electrophile such as benzaldehyde.

Treatment of 2-alkynylphenol with an alkyl Grignard reagent in the presence of a catalytic amount of manganese(II) chloride provided 2-(2-alkyl-1-alkenyl)phenol in good yield. Alkylmagnesation proceeded with high regio- and stereoselectivities.
