Bioactive azaarene-substituted lactic acids, β-hydroxy esters, hydroxyindolones, and alkenylazaarenes are prepared via C(sp3)-H functionalization of methyl azaarenes with carbonyl compounds in the presence of iron(II) acetate as an inexpensive, nontoxic, and efficient catalyst.
