Abstract

The title reaction, established for a way to diarylmethane or diarylethane compounds, is investigated for substrates of type (I) with a strong Broensted acid as counterion and the analogue (VII) bearing a BF4 counterion. Aldehydes (II) are used as reactants in the presence of optically active catalyst, JOC, to produce mixtures of diastereomers with the anti isomer always being the major one. The selectivity of the reaction depends on the substitution pattern of the starting diarylcarbenium salts. A preliminary investigation concerning a one-pot, three-component approach is only successful for the preparation of (IIIa)/(IVa) and does not reveal any advantage compared with the isolated carbenium ions.
