Densely oxygenated syn-diols are available by diastereoselective reduction of the primary products.

A very efficient NHC-catalyzed lactamization reaction is reported. For most cases, the ring expansion reaction proceeds to cleanly furnish five- and six-membered N-Ts and N-Bn lactams, without the need for further purification. Evidence is presented suggesting a dual role for the stoichiometric base: (1) deprotonation of the triazolium precatalyst and (2) activation of the nitrogen leaving group through hydrogen bonding.

Two related stereoselective syntheses of 3,7-dimethylnonadecane, a sex pheromone of the alfalfa leafminer, are described to show that pulegone can serve as a useful starting material for the preparation of chiral aliphatic isoprenoid compounds. The schemes are designed to place the stereogenic center of pulegone at C.3 in one synthesis and at C.7 in the other so that the optical properties of the products can be compared with one another and with the values calculated using Brewster's rules. A full overview of the decarboxylative cross-coupling reaction between heteroaromatic carboxylic acids and aryl halides is described. This transformation employs palladium catalysts with short reaction times providing facile synthesis of aryl-substituted heteroaromatics. The effect of each reaction parameter including solvent, base, and additive employed as well as the full substrate scope of this transformation are reported. Mechanistic evidence is also disclosed that sheds light on possible reaction pathways.
