The bridge‐splitting reactions in (I) by α‐diimino ligands (II) lead to different equilibria mixtures dependent on stoichiometry, solvent, ligand and temperature.

Ab initio LCAO MO‐SCF calculations on the model compounds (I) and (II) indicate that the E‐trans conformation shown is favored over the E‐cis one by 16.9 kJ mol‐1 for (I) and by 25.0 kJ mol‐1 for (II).

The reactions of appropriate pyridine‐2‐carbaldimines with the allylic dimers (I) give rise to equilibria between (I), (II), and (III) depending on stoichiometry, concentration, solvent, and temperature.

Imino(2‐pyridyl)methyl‐Pd(II) compounds of the type (I) react with the allyl dimers (II) (molar ratio 1:0.5) in the presence of NaClO4to give cationic binuclear complexes of the type (III) (yields 73‐79%).

As shown by electronic and 1H NMR spectra the scarcely soluble complexes (I) and (II) exist as undissociated monomers in chlorinated solvents, such as CHCl3and CH2Cl2.
