The structures of hydroxydehydrocrenatine and hydroxycrenatine (isolated from P. javanica and reported to be the 5‐hydroxy compounds) are revised to the 8‐hydroxy compounds (Ia) (space group P1 with Z=4) and (Ib), respectively.

The enones (I) undergo cycloaddition reaction with the vinyl ether (II) to give the α‐ethoxydihydropyrans (III) which react with hydroxylamine hydrochloride (IV), producing the pyridines (V).

The reaction of CoCl2with 1‐norbornyllithium in THF affords the anionic Co(III) complex (I), while the same reaction in pentane yields the previously reported tetrahedral Co(IV) complex (II), which crystallizes in Pmn21 with Z=2.

The conversion of (Ic) to (III) can be readily reversed in the presence of CO.
