The two clusters (I) (yield 32%) and (II) (11%) (for both space group P21/n, Z=4) are obtained by reaction of Pt2Os4(CO)18with H2(100 atm, 25 °C) in CH2Cl2.

The title compound (IIIa) (space group P1, Z=4) is prepared by reaction of NMe3(II) with the cluster (I) or with Os3(CO)10(μ‐SPh)(μ‐H) (yield 27%).

The μ‐hydridodirhenium complex (IV) is obtained according to the scheme and characterized by IR and 1H NMR data as well as a single‐crystal X‐ray structure analysis (space group Pbca, Z = 8).

The yields of the title compounds are improved considerably (26 and 18%) by using 2,4‐heptadiene as the precursor to the pentadienyl ligand.

The carbene cluster (II) synthesized as shown undergoes a photodecarbonylation to form the μ‐carbyne cluster (III) by an α‐CH bond activation in the carbene ligand of (II).

The reaction of (I) with thiirane (II) leads to the known compound (III) and the new product (IV).

By refluxing the carbene complex (I) in CHCl3the new complex (II), which contains a π‐complexed iminium ligand, is obtained.

Treatment of the (arenethiolato)triosmium clusters (I) with the diamines (II) yields via CO substitution the (dialkylamino)carbene derivatives (III).
