Single crystals of U3Fe2Ge7 are grown from an equimolar mixture of the elements in a tin flux (graphite crucible in evacuated silica tubes, 1273 K, 2 d; cooling to 573 K with a rate of 5 K/h). The compound crystallizes with the La3Co2Sn7 type structure in the orthorhombic space group Cmmm (Z = 2, single crystal XRD) with two Wyckoff sites for the U atoms. It orders ferromagnetically below 62 K and shows a strong two-ion uniaxial magnetic anisotropy upon magnetization in static (<14 T) and pulsed (<60 T) magnetic fields. The material is easily magnetized along the c axis with a spontaneous magnetic moment of 3.3 μB/f.u. at 2 K. Moessbauer data show a moment of 0.2 μ B per Fe atom. Magnetization along the a axis reveals a first-order magnetization process that allows for a quantitative description of the magnetic anisotropy in spite of its enormous energetic strength. Ge1-xCrxSb2Te4 (x = 0.04 and 0.08) are prepared by melting and subsequent annealing of stoichiometric amounts of the elements (sealed silica ampoules, 1. 900 °C, 96 h, 2. 550 °C, several d). The compound crystallize in the 21R-In3Te4 structure type (space group R...m, powder XRD) with no impurity phases detected. EPR spectroscopy reveals a valence state of +3 for the Cr atoms which agrees well with the Cr3+ content calculated from the inverse magnetic susceptibility. The material exhibits ferromagnetic fluctuations with a paramagnetic Curie temperature of 70 K and is a metallic conductor. Compared to the undoped material, the electrical conductivity is increased by a factor of 2.5. Because Cr doping leads to a higher Seebeck coefficient, the thermoelectric figure of merit reaches values of up to 0.3 at 500 °C which is three times the value of the undoped material.
