We report on a paper-based sensor capable of performing template-independent DNA synthesis by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT). Importantly, we observed that TdT efficiently incorporates fluorescently labeled dUTP on to 3'-OH ends of DNA strands in a strictly controllable manner on cellulose paper, in comparison to its distributive mode of DNA synthesis in solution. Due to the high roughness and porous nature of cellulose paper, we attribute this controllable DNA polymerization to the pore confinement effect on the catalytic behaviour of TdT. Taking advantage of this finding, we proposed a paper-assisted TdT (PAT) assay for absolute quantification of alkylated DNA lesions (N7-methylguanine), DNA deamination (cytosine-to-uracil) and DNA oxidation (8-oxo-7,8-dihydroguanine) by combining various DNA glycosylases. Mass spectrometry (MS) is attractive as a multiplexed immunoassay readout benefiting from its high sensitivity, speed and mass resolution. Here, a simple paper-based hexaplex immunoassay with an on-line MS readout was proposed, using functionalized paper as the immune substrates, along with rhodamine-based mass tags assembled on gold nanoparticles prepared as the mass probes (MPs). Simultaneous immune capture and labeling were conducted in one step on paper substrates in 96-well plates with a high throughput within 30 minutes, and the on-line efficient dissociation of the mass tags highly facilitated the hexaplex readout of the immune signals by a newly established on-line paper substrate-based electrospray ionization-MS setup. Six MPs were synthesized for the simultaneous quantification of six important cancer protein markers (cancer antigen 15-3, cancer antigen 19-9, carcinoma embryonic antigen, cancer antigen 125, human epididymis protein 4, and alpha fetoprotein) using only 10 μL serum, presenting satisfactory sensitivity, accuracy and specificity. Although noble metal nanocatalysts show superior performance to conventional catalysts, they can be problematic when balancing catalytic efficiency and reusability. In order to address this dilemma, we developed a smart paper transformer (s-PAT) to support nanocatalysts, based on easy phase conversion between paper and pulp, for the first time. The pulp phase was used to maintain the high catalytic efficiency of the nanocatalysts and the transformation to paper enabled their high reusability. Herein, as an example of smart paper transformers, a novel chromatography paper-supported Au nanosponge (AuNS/pulp) catalyst was developed through a simple water-based preparation process for the successful reduction of p -nitrophenol to demonstrate the high catalytic efficiency and reusability of the noble metal nanocatalyst/pulp system. The composition, structure, and morphology of the AuNS/pulp catalyst were characterized by XRD, TGA, FE-SEM, ICP, TEM, FT-IR, and XPS. The AuNS/pulp catalyst was transformed into the pulp phase during the catalytic reaction and into the paper phase to recover the catalysts after use. Owing to this smart switching of physical morphology, the AuNS/pulp catalyst was dispersed more evenly in the solution. Therefore, it exhibited excellent catalytic performance for p -nitrophenol reduction. Under optimal conditions, the conversion rate of p -nitrophenol reached nearly 100% within 6 min and the k value of AuNS/pulp (0.0106 s -1 ) was more than twice that of a traditional chromatography paper-based catalyst (0.0048 s -1 ). Additionally, it exhibited outstanding reusability and could maintain its high catalytic efficiency even after fifteen recycling runs. Accordingly, the unique phase switching of this smart paper transformer enables Au nanosponge to transform into a highly efficient and cost-effective multifunctional catalyst. Halide double perovskites are an important emerging alternative to lead-halide perovskites in a variety of optoelectronic applications. Compared to ABX 3 single perovskites (A = monovalent cation, X = halide), A 2 BB'X 6 double perovskites exhibit a wider array of compositions and electronic structures, promising finer control over physical and electronic properties through synthetic design. However, a clear understanding of how chemical composition dictates the electronic structures of this large family of materials is still lacking. Herein, we develop a qualitative Linear Combination of Atomic Orbitals (LCAO) model that describes the full range of band structures for double perovskites. Our simple model allows for a direct connection between the inherently local bonding between atoms in the double perovskite and the resulting delocalized bands of the solid. In particular, we show how bands in halide double perovskites originate from the molecular orbitals of metal-hexahalide coordination complexes and describe how these molecular orbitals vary within a band. Our results provide both an enhanced understanding of known perovskite compositions and predictive power for identifying new compositions with targeted properties. We present a table, which permits the position of the conduction band minimum and valence band maximum in most double perovskites to be immediately determined from the frontier atomic orbitals of the B-site metals. Using purely qualitative arguments based on orbital symmetries and their relative energies, the direct/indirect nature of the bandgap of almost all halide double perovskites can thus be correctly predicted. Carbon monoxide (CO) is known for its multifaceted role in human physiology, and molecules that release CO in a controlled way have been proposed as therapeutic drugs. In this work, a light-responsive CO-releasing molecule ( CORM-Dabsyl ) showed a strong colourimetric response upon photochemical CO-release, owing to the tight conjugation of a Mn(i) tricarbonyl centre to a dabsyl chromophoric ligand ( L ). Whereas the complex was very stable in the dark in nitrogen-purged aqueous media, CO-release was effectively triggered using 405 nm irradiation. CORM-Dabsyl , L and the inactive product iCORM-Dabsyl have been investigated by DFT and TD-DFT calculations. Only mild toxicity of CORM-Dabsyl was observed against LX-2 and HepaRG® human cell lines (IC 50 ∼ 30 μM). Finally, to develop a CO storage and release material that is readily applicable to therapeutic situations, CORM-Dabsyl was loaded on low-cost and easily disposable paper strips, from which the light triggered CO-release was conveniently visible with the naked eye.
