A universal method is proposed to produce superhydrophobic silica coating on the surfaces of either soft or hard substrates. The well-defined hierarchical structures can be formed by spraying, dipping and dropping the suspension of perfluorosilane-coated silica particles. Further adhesive-layer technique and the corresponding robustness mechanism have been investigated, and the created superhydrophobic surface shows high robustness and performance maintenance after various types of damages, including finger wiping, knife scratching and even 60 of abrasion cycles with sandpaper. Such a surface superhydrophobicity can also fit for the requirements of self-cleaning and oil separation/adsorption.

Core-shell structured Co@Silica@meso-Silica nanoparticles have been synthesized via a layer-by-layer approach. The magnetic cobalt core makes the nanoparticles easy to separate with an external magnetic field. The inner dense silica layer prevents the Co from oxidation and leaching. The outer mesoporous silica presents high surface area and pore volume, endowing the material with superior adsorption properties of organic molecules. The core-shell structure prevents the direct contact of cobalt with living cells, thus enhancing the biocompatibility remarkably. This dual encapsulation provides a golden opportunity to the nanocarrier design with easy magnetic separation, high drug loading, and high biocompatibility.

TiO2 hierarchical microsphere assembled from anatase TiO2 nanosheets has been successfully prepared and exhibited excellent catalytic activities of H2 production and benzyl alcohol selective oxidized to benzaldehyde. These enhanced photoactivity can be mainly ascribed to the charge separation promoted by the surface F and nanosheet units, enhancement of substrate molecular transport profited from the hierarchical structure.

Smart delivery systems have received increasing attentions, due to the controllable capturing-releasing of the guests in many applications. Here, we propose a pH-responsive Au cluster capturing-releasing system using the mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) modified by organic molecular tweezers. The π-π-π stacking have been used to capture and stabilize the Au clusters in the pores of MSNs on the neutral or alkaline conditions, and responsively release and manipulate the Au clusters by adjustment of the pH value. The released Au clusters show high catalytic activity.

We synthesized Mn4+ doped SrLaMgNbO6 phosphors by a solvothermal method. The influence of Mn4+ concentration on emission of SrLaMgNbO6:Mn4+ phosphor was investigated. The synthesized phosphors have a single phase and flower-like microstructure. Under the excitation at 321 nm, SrLaMgNbO6:Mn4+ phosphors show intense red emission with three peaks, which come from the 2Eg, 2T2g → 4A2g transitions of the 3d3 electrons in the octahedral MnO68− complex. SrLaMgNbO6:Mn4+ phosphors have potential applications in WLEDs. The addition of SrLaMgNbO6:Mn4+ phosphor can decrease the CCT value and increase Ra value of white lights emitted by WLEDs.

Ce 3+ /Eu 2+ doped SrSc 2 O 4 phosphors were synthesized by a solid state reaction. The phase and luminescent properties of the synthesized phosphors were investigated. In SrSc 2 O 4 host, Ce 3+ /Eu 2+ substitute Sr 2+ sites and form the solid solution. Ce 3+ /Eu 2+ singly doped SrSc 2 O 4 phosphors respectively show emission band locating in green and deep red regions and the emission peaks shift to longer wavelength with the increasing concentration due to the enhancements of crystal field. In Ce 3+ /Eu 2+ codoped SrSc 2 O 4 phosphors, the intensities of Ce 3+ and Eu 2+ emissions change with the changing Eu 2+ concentrations due to energy transfer from Ce 3+ to Eu 2+ .

A facile one-pot hydrothermal synthesis of 3D windmill-like CdS/MoS2/rGO has been reported. The MoS2/rGO framework prevents the aggregation of CdS and leads to a two-pathway for electron transfer, thus enhancing the electron density and more active site on the rGO surface. Compared with pure CdS, the hierarchical CdS/MoS2/rGO catalyst displays superior photocatalytic H2 production activity and electrocatalytic H2 evolution overpotential, which is 3.5 times in photoactivity and 146.7 mV decrease of overpotential. A new hierarchical structure and its characteristics and mechanism are proposed at the atomic-/nanoscale.

Hierarchical structured mesoporous Co3O4/SiO2 composites have been fabricated by the in-situ transformation of cobalt nanocrystals in the mesoporous silica. The hierarchical porous composites show good structural stability during the thermal treating process and demonstrate high crystallinity after phase transformation. The highly crystalline Co3O4/SiO2 composite has uniform mesopores and exhibits good adsorption ability. This method offers a promising way to the design of hierarchical structured mesoporous materials with highly crystalline framework.

Effects of charge state and interatomic distance on the magnetic properties of C-doped MgO system are explored by a revised PBE (PBEsol) functional plus U method. Both PBEsol and PBEsol + U results demonstrate that single neutral C substituted at the O site can induce a stable magnetic moment of 2 μB into the doped system. We mainly find that the size of the magnetic moment is determined by the charge states of the C dopant and strongly depended on the distance between two C dopants. These results are expected to stimulate future experimental work on the dilute magnetic semiconductors.

The EPR for two types of Fe 3 + –V O defect in the PbTiO 3 :Fe 3+ system has been investigated systematically by diagonalizing the complete energy matrix and considering the contributions from the spin–orbit coupling of the central ion as well as that of the ligand ions. Our results indicate that the doped ion Fe 3+ will go away from oxygen vacancy (V O ) and the four planar oxygen ligands move towards V O for B site in the PbTiO 3 :Fe 3+ system and the obtained local lattice distortion parameters are well in accord with the experimental reports. Moreover, the links between the ground-state splitting and ζ , ζ′ are discussed.
