Here we present a simple method whereby lattice planes in single crystals of nanoclusters can be observed using a conventional transmission electron microscope, enabling further expansion of cluster research. We report three methods for the synthesis of alloy nanoparticles by a laser in air, where three types of MOF precursors are used. An alkynyl-protected gold nanocluster [Au40(PhC≡C)20(dppm)4](SbF6)4 (dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane) (1) has been synthesized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that the cluster has a face-centered cubic (FCC) Au34 kernel that is made up of two Au20 units via sharing a rectangular face. Two linear PhC≡C–Au–C≡CPh staple motifs are located around the central part of the Au34 core, and four L-shaped PhC≡C–Au–P^P staple motifs are located at the four corners of the Au34 core. Cluster 1 and [Au38(PhC≡C)20(PPh3)4](CF3SO3)2 both have the FCC Au34 core, and it is found that the diphosphine ligands bringing two more Au atoms into the system have significant effects on the optical properties and stability of the clusters. Depositing Pt atoms on nanoscale two-dimensional (2D) substrates resulting in the exposure of specific crystal facets is an effective strategy for reducing the Pt content without compromising the catalytic property. Herein, the Pd/PtCu core/shell nanoplates exhibit substantially improved ORR and MOR mass activities, 8.3 and 3.3 times higher than those of commercial Pt. We report two synthetic approaches to prepare a highly crystalline Zr(iv)-based metal-organic framework (MOF) containing open 2,2′-bipyridine (bpy) chelating sites. We have successfully developed an ethylene glycol mediated solution phase method for synthesizing highly crystalline Bi2Te3nanotubes using Te nanowires as the in situtemplates; our work demonstrates the generic feature of a solution phase mediated Kirkendall effect for the synthesis of not only hollow nanoparticles but also highly crystalline tubular structures.
