Bimetallic Au@Ag nano-sea urchins (Au@Ag NSUs) functionalized with methimazole were synthesized and combined with paper tips as efficient surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates for ultrasensitive Cr(VI) detection. The redox reaction between methimazole and Cr(VI) ensured the reliability of quantitative Cr(VI) analysis. When droplets were continuously dropped on the tip of the paper, based on the gravity effect, the nanoparticles achieved enrichment at the front end of the tip, which further improved the sensitivity of detection. The detection limit is as low as 0.956 ng L−1, demonstrating its excellent performance in ultrarace Cr(VI) detection. Additionally, the SERS sensor was successfully applied to the detection of Cr(VI) in real water samples, such as lake water and tap water, indicating its wide application potential in environmental monitoring. We report a series of structurally relevant copper phenanthroline complexes as pre-catalysts for highly selective electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to C2 products using inexpensive carbon paper electrodes. The Cu complexes with non-substituted phenanthroline promote the production of ethylene with a high faradaic efficiency of 71.2%, while the one with pyridinium-functionalized ligands is more selective for ethanol. This communication describes the development of polyvinyl chloride electrochemical system in which a paper layer loaded with reagents is inserted into the device, demonstrating a new concept of a paper card-like pad for a reagent-free and easy measurement of the target analyte in solution. This device detects glucose in artificial tears in the range of 0.2–2 mM with a detection limit of 50 μM by simply adding the artificial tears to the paper card-like pad. Here, a novel paired electrolysis system is constructed, where fluorine-doped tin oxide glass serves as the anode for the water oxidation reaction to produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc)/carbon nanotube (CNT) loaded carbon paper as the cathode for CO2 reduction to generate CO. This system demonstrates a high overall energy efficiency of 34%, where a faradaic efficiency exceeding 90% for CO2 reduction and 60% for water oxidation to H2O2 have been achieved, demonstrating significant energy savings of nearly 40% compared to the respective half-reaction systems. We reported a colorimetric paper-based device by integrating the modified acid RNA-cleaving DNAzymes (MaRCD-EC1) for highly sensitive (detection limit = 102 CFU mL−1), and rapid (within 30 min) detection of E. coli without amplification. Gossypol, a phytotoxicant in cotton-seed oil, has been found to sensitize Tb(III)-luminescence in a supramolecular hydrogel. Based on this observation, a paper-based sensor has been developed to detect gossypol with a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.9 nM. This is the first report of water-based detection with the highest sensitivity involving turn-on time-gated luminescence. We report a strategy that tunes the CO2 and proton concentrations near the electrode–electrolyte interface using surfactant modification with various amounts (0.05, 0.8, 1.6, and 3.2 mg) of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). The positively charged group of CTAB favors CO2 surface diffusion and inhibits excessive proton accumulation on Zn nanosheets on carbon paper. Herein, Cu-doped Co-ZIF nanoplate arrays are uniformly grown on a commercial paper towel substrate first. A novel, biodegradable substrate based, and cost-effective flexible electrochemical sensor was developed for the highly selective and sensitive detection of one of the major neurotransmitters, dopamine, which can be utilised as a disposable electrode for point-of-care diagnostic applications. The exploration of high-performance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts is conducive to the development of clean hydrogen energy, yet still remains a challenge. Herein, we rapidly synthesize the Mo2C/MoS2 heterostructure on carbon paper (Mo2C/MoS2–CP) via carbothermal shock in only two seconds. The construction of the Mo2C/MoS2 heterostructure regulates the electronic structure of the Mo site and facilitates charge transfer during the HER process. Moreover, the catalyst exhibits enhanced hydrophilicity and aerophobicity, facilitating optimal electrolyte–catalyst interaction and efficient hydrogen bubble detachment for accelerated mass transfer. Consequently, Mo2C/MoS2–CP exhibits superior intrinsic alkaline HER activity, and excellent stability for 100 h. Detection and characterization of DNA damage plays a critical role in genotoxicity testing, drug screening, and environmental health. A multi-functional oil–water separator is prepared from a paper towel spray coated with superamphiphobic (i.e., superhydrophobic and superoleophobic) nanoparticles. In light of the surging research interest in disposable electronics, great demands have been imposed on compact power sources. Herein, a paper-based zinc–air battery that takes advantage of a hollow channel structure is reported. Unlike conventional paper-based metal–air batteries and fuel cells that tightly immobilize the electrode on the paper channel, a hollow channel layer containing potassium hydroxide solution electrolyte is sandwiched between the electrodes and paper channel layer. This novel zinc–air battery is capable of delivering a peak power density of 102 mW cm−2, surpassing state-of-the-art paper-based power sources. Negative ion mode paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) suffers from intense background noise and unstable MS signal. For the first time, we reported fluorinated boron nitride nanosheet (h-FBN) assisted negative ion PS-MS for the detection of a series of molecules. A well-designed support material between catalyst and substrate can always significantly enhance the performance of an electrode on water oxidation. In this work, a functional Ni and N-doped carbon layer (NNC) was designed on carbon paper (CP) via pyrolysis by using a controlled electrodeposited polyporphyrin as a precursor. Consequently, the fabricated NiFe-LDH/NNC/CP achieved a catalytic current density of 100 mA cm−2 at a small overpotential of 231 mV with a low Tafel slope of 26.0 mV dec−1, as well as high durability for more than 360 h. A bio-inspired cellulose paper–poly(amidoxime) composite hydrogel is explored via UV-polymerization. A novel non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor was constructed to achieve a highly selective and ultrasensitive detection of cholesterol to address the problems related to serious coronary heart disease. Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NitRR) is an energy-saving and environmentally benign approach to synthesizing ammonia under ambient conditions. However, the development of noble metal-free catalysts with high activity and selectivity is still a significant challenge. In this study, uniformly dispersed amorphous CoBx nanoparticles supported on carbon paper were synthesized VIA a simple wet chemical reduction method. As an efficient nitrate reduction electrocatalyst, CoBx exhibited a maximum faradaic efficiency of 94.00 ± 1.67% and a yield rate of up to 0.787 ± 0.028 mmol h−1 cm−2 for ammonia production. The enhanced NitRR performance could be attributed to a partial electron transfer from B to Co, which is necessary for optimizing the adsorption energies of the reaction intermediates and facilitating electron transport. Cellular invasion is the gateway to metastasis, which is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Invasion is driven by a number of chemical and mechanical stresses that arise in the tumor microenvironment. In vitro assays are needed for the systematic study of cancer progress. To be truly predictive, these assays must generate tissue-like environments that can be experimentally controlled and manipulated. While two-dimensional (2D) monolayer cultures are easily assembled and evaluated, they lack the extracellular components needed to assess invasion. Three-dimensional (3D) cultures are better suited for invasion studies because they generate cellular phenotypes that are more representative of those found in vivo. This feature article provides an overview of four invasion platforms. We focus on paper-based cultures, an emerging 3D culture platform capable of generating tissue-like structures and quantifying cellular invasion. Paper-based cultures are as easily assembled and analyzed as monolayers, but provide an experimentally powerful platform capable of supporting: co-cultures and representative extracellular environments; experimentally controlled gradients; readouts capable of quantifying, discerning, and separating cells based on their invasiveness. An unprecedented strategy for preparing photoresponsive cellulose paper enabling the storage of short-lived optical data by covalent photopatterning is disclosed. Herein we report a convenient and sensitive method for the detection of telomerase activity based on upconversion nanoparticle (UCNP) modified cellulose paper. Compared with many solution-phase systems, this paper chip is more stable and easily stores the test results.
