In this paper, we explore the local dynamics, chaos, and bifurcations of a discrete Rosenzweig–Macarthur prey–predator model. More specifically, we explore local dynamical characteristics at equilibrium solutions of the discrete model. The existence of bifurcations at equilibrium solutions is also studied, and that at semitrivial and trivial equilibrium solutions, the model does not undergo flip bifurcation, but at positive equilibrium solutions, it undergoes flip and Neimark–Sacker bifurcations when parameters go through certain curves. Fold bifurcation does not exist at positive equilibrium, and we have studied these bifurcations by the center manifold theorem and bifurcation theory. The outbreak of infectious diseases often exhibits periodicity, and this periodic behavior can be mathematically represented as a limit cycle. However, the periodic behavior has rarely been considered in demonstrating the cluster phenomenon of infection induced by diffusion (the instability modes) in the SIR model. We investigate the emergence of Turing instability from a stable equilibrium and a limit cycle to illustrate the dynamical and biological mechanisms of pattern formation. We identify the Hopf bifurcation to demonstrate the existence of a stable limit cycle using First Lyapunov coefficient in our spatiotemporal diffusion-driven SIR model. The competition between different instability modes induces different types of patterns and eventually spot patterns emerge as stable patterns. We investigate the impact of susceptible, infected, and recovered individuals on the type of patterns. Interestingly, these instability modes play a vital role in selecting the pattern formations, which is directly related to the number of observed spot patterns. The recent pandemic has highlighted the need to understand how we resist infections and their causes, which may differ from the ways we often think about treating epidemic diseases. The current study presents an improved version of the susceptible-infected-recovered (S I R) epidemic model, to better comprehend the community's overall dynamics of diseases, involving numerous infectious agents. The model deals with a non-monotone incidence rate that exhibits psychological or inhibitory influence and a saturation treatment rate. It has been identified that depending on the measure of medical resources and the effectiveness of their supply, the model exposes both forward and backward bifurcations where two endemic equilibria coexist with infection-free equilibrium. The model also experiences local and global bifurcations of codimension two, including saddle-node, Hopf, and Bogdanov–Takens bifurcations. Additionally, the stability of equilibrium points is investigated. For a spatially extended S I R model system, we have shown that cross-diffusion allows S and I populations to coexist in a habitat. Also, the Turing instability requirements and Turing bifurcation regime are derived. The relationship between distinct role-playing model parameters and various pattern formations like spot and stripe patterns is validated by carrying out in-depth numerical simulations. The findings in the vicinity of the endemic equilibrium solution demonstrate the significance of positive and negative valued cross-diffusion coefficients in regulating the genesis of spatial patterns in susceptible as well as diseased individuals. The equilibrium state of a superfluid in a rotating cylindrical vessel is a vortex crystal—an array of vortex lines, which is stationary in the rotating frame. Experimental realizations of this behavior typically show a sequence of transient states before the free-energy-minimizing configuration is reached. Motivated by these observations, we construct a new method for a systematic exploration of the free-energy landscape via gradient-based optimization of a scalar loss function. Our approach is inspired by the pioneering numerical work of Campbell and Ziff [Phys. Rev. B. 20, 1886 (1979)] and makes use of automatic differentiation, which crucially allows us to include entire solution trajectories in the loss. We first use the method to converge thousands of low free-energy relative equilibria in the unbounded domain for vortex numbers in the range 10 ≤ N ≤ 30 , which reveals an extremely dense set of mostly saddle-like solutions. As part of this search, we discover new continuous families of relative equilibria, which are often global minimizers of free energy. These continuous families all consist of crystals arranged in a double-ring configuration, and we assess which state from the family is most likely to be observed experimentally by computing energy-minimizing pathways from nearby local minima—identifying a common entry point into the family. The continuous families become discrete sets of equal-energy solutions when the wall is introduced in the problem. Finally, we develop an approach to compute homoclinic orbits and use it to examine the dynamics in the vicinity of the minimizing state by converging connections for low-energy saddles. We consider a system of n coupled oscillators described by the Kuramoto model with the dynamics given by θ ˙ = ω + K f (θ). In this system, an equilibrium solution θ ∗ is considered stable when ω + K f (θ ∗) = 0 , and the Jacobian matrix D f (θ ∗) has a simple eigenvalue of zero, indicating the presence of a direction in which the oscillators can adjust their phases. Additionally, the remaining eigenvalues of D f (θ ∗) are negative, indicating stability in orthogonal directions. A crucial constraint imposed on the equilibrium solution is that | Γ (θ ∗) | ≤ π , where | Γ (θ ∗) | represents the length of the shortest arc on the unit circle that contains the equilibrium solution θ ∗. We provide a proof that there exists a unique solution satisfying the aforementioned stability criteria. The May–Leonard model was introduced to examine the behavior of three competing populations where rich dynamics, such as limit cycles and nonperiodic cyclic solutions, arise. In this work, we perturb the system by adding the capability of global mutations, allowing one species to evolve to the other two in a linear manner. We find that for small mutation rates, the perturbed system not only retains some of the dynamics seen in the classical model, such as the three-species equal-population equilibrium bifurcating to a limit cycle, but also exhibits new behavior. For instance, we capture curves of fold bifurcations where pairs of equilibria emerge and then coalesce. As a result, we uncover parameter regimes with new types of stable fixed points that are distinct from the single- and dual-population equilibria characteristic of the original model. On the contrary, the linearly perturbed system fails to maintain heteroclinic connections that exist in the original system. Macroscopic magnets can easily be manipulated and positioned so that interactions between themselves and with external fields induce interesting dynamics and equilibrium configurations. In this work, we use rotating magnets positioned in a line or at the vertices of a regular polygon. The rotation planes of the magnets can be modified at will. The rich structure of stable and unstable configurations is dictated by symmetry and the side of the polygon. We show that both symmetric solutions and their symmetry-breaking bifurcations can be explained with group theory. Our results suggest that the predicted magnetic textures should emerge at any length scale as long as the interaction is polar, and the system is endowed with the same symmetries. In this work, we study the phenomenon of disordered quenching in arrays of coupled Bautin oscillators, which are the normal form for bifurcation in the vicinity of the equilibrium point when the first Lyapunov coefficient vanishes and the second one is nonzero. For particular parameter values, the Bautin oscillator is in a bistable regime with two attractors—the equilibrium and the limit cycle—whose basins are separated by the unstable limit cycle. We consider arrays of coupled Bautin oscillators and study how they become quenched with increasing coupling strength. We analytically show the existence and stability of the dynamical regimes with amplitude disorder in a ring of coupled Bautin oscillators with identical natural frequencies. Next, we numerically provide evidence that disordered oscillation quenching holds for rings as well as chains with nonidentical natural frequencies and study the characteristics of this effect. We analyze the rotational dynamics of six magnetic dipoles of identical strength at the vertices of a regular hexagon with a variable-strength dipole in the center. The seven dipoles spin freely about fixed axes that are perpendicular to the plane of the hexagon, with their dipole moments directed parallel to the plane. Equilibrium dipole orientations are calculated as a function of the relative strength of the central dipole. Small-amplitude perturbations about these equilibrium states are calculated in the absence of friction and are compared with analytical results in the limit of zero and infinite central dipole strength. The replicator equation is a standard model of evolutionary population game dynamics. In this article, we consider a modification of replicator dynamics, in which playing a particular strategy depletes an associated resource, and the payoff for that strategy is a function of the availability of the resource. Resources are assumed to replenish themselves, given time. Overuse of a resource causes it to crash. If the depletion rate is low enough, most trajectories converge to a stable equilibrium at which all initially present strategies are equally popular. As the depletion rate increases, these fixed points vanish in bifurcations. The phase space is periodic in each of the resource variables, and it is possible for trajectories to whirl around different numbers of times in these variables before converging to the stable equilibrium, resulting in a wide variety of topological types of orbits. Numerical solutions in a low-dimensional case show that in a cross section of the phase space, the topological types are separated by intricately folded separatrices. Once the depletion rate is high enough that the stable equilibrium in the interior of the phase space vanishes, the dynamics immediately become chaotic, without going through a period-doubling cascade; a numerical method reveals horseshoes in a Poincaré map. It appears that the multitude of topological types of orbits present before this final bifurcation generate this chaotic behavior. A periodic orbit of saddle type can be found using the symmetries of the dynamics, and its stable and unstable manifolds may generate a homoclinic tangle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of evolutionary games with pairwise local interactions has been of interest to many different disciplines. Also, local interactions with multiple opponents had been considered, although always for a fixed amount of players. In many situations, however, interactions between different numbers of players in each round could take place, and this case cannot be reduced to pairwise interactions. In this work, we formalize and generalize the definition of evolutionary stable strategy (ESS) to be able to include a scenario in which the game is played by two players with probability p and by three players with the complementary probability 1 − p. We show the existence of equilibria in pure and mixed strategies depending on the probability p , on a concrete example of the duel–truel game. We find a range of p values for which the game has a mixed equilibrium and the proportion of players in each strategy depends on the particular value of p. We prove that each of these mixed equilibrium points is ESS. A more realistic way to study this dynamics with high-order interactions is to look at how it evolves in complex networks. We introduce and study an agent-based model on a network with a fixed number of nodes, which evolves as the replicator equation predicts. By studying the dynamics of this model on random networks, we find that the phase transitions between the pure and mixed equilibria depend on probability p and also on the mean degree of the network. Real world systems comprised of coupled oscillators have the ability to exhibit spontaneous synchronization and other complex behaviors. The interplay between the underlying network topology and the emergent dynamics remains a rich area of investigation for both theory and experiment. In this work, we study lattices of coupled Kuramoto oscillators with non-local interactions. Our focus is on the stability of twisted states. These are equilibrium solutions with constant phase shifts between oscillators resulting in spatially linear profiles. Linear stability analysis follows from studying the quadratic form associated with the Jacobian matrix. Novel estimates on both stable and unstable regimes of twisted states are obtained in several cases. Moreover, exploiting the "almost circulant" nature of the Jacobian obtains a surprisingly accurate numerical test for stability. Using numerical simulation methods and analytical approaches, we demonstrate hard self-oscillation excitation in systems with infinitely many equilibrium points forming a line of equilibria in the phase space. The studied bifurcation phenomena are equivalent to the excitation scenario via the subcritical Andronov–Hopf bifurcation observed in classical self-oscillators with isolated equilibrium points. The hysteresis and bistability accompanying the discussed processes are shown and explained. The research is carried out on an example of a nonlinear memristor-based self-oscillator model. First, a simpler model including Chua's memristor with a piecewise-smooth characteristic is explored. Then, the memristor characteristic is changed to a function being smooth everywhere. This work addresses the problem of pattern analysis in networks consisting of delay-coupled identical Lur'e systems. We study a class of nonlinear systems, which, being isolated, are globally asymptotically stable. Assembling such systems into a network via time-delayed coupling may result in the change of network equilibrium stability under parameter variation in the coupling. In this work, we focus on cases where a Hopf bifurcation causes the change of stability of the network equilibrium and leads to the occurrence of oscillatory modes (patterns). Moreover, some of these patterns can co-exist for the same set of coupling parameters, which makes the analysis by means of common methods, such as the Lyapunov–Krasovskii method or the analysis of Poincaré maps, cumbersome. A numerically efficient algorithm, aiming at the computation of the oscillatory patterns occurring in such networks, is presented. Moreover, we show that our approach is able to deal with co-existing patterns, and both stable and unstable regimes can be simultaneously computed, which gives deep insight into the network dynamics. In order to illustrate the efficiency of the method, we present two examples in which the instability of the network equilibria is caused by a subcritical and a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. We study the probabilistic behavior of a simplified stochastic thermohaline circulation system during the transition between two given equilibrium states. Theoretically, there are an infinite number of possible pathways for the system to change from one state to another, and in many practical situations it is unclear how the state of the system exactly evolves. We propose to use the maximum likelihood state to estimate the true state of the system. We construct an autonomous low-dimensional system of differential equations by replacement of real-valued variables with complex-valued variables in a self-oscillating system with homoclinic loops of a saddle. We provide analytical and numerical indications and argue that the emerging chaotic attractor is a uniformly hyperbolic chaotic attractor of Smale–Williams type. The four-dimensional phase space of the flow consists of two parts: a vicinity of a saddle equilibrium with two pairs of equal eigenvalues where the angular variable undergoes a Bernoulli map, and a region which ensures that the trajectories return to the origin without angular variable changing. The trajectories of the flow approach and leave the vicinity of the saddle equilibrium with the arguments of complex variables undergoing a Bernoulli map on each return. This makes possible the formation of the attractor of a Smale–Williams type in Poincaré cross section. In essence, our model resembles complex amplitude equations governing the dynamics of wave envelops or spatial Fourier modes. We discuss the roughness and generality of our scheme. The emergence of cooperation in the thermodynamic limit of social dilemmas is an emerging field of research. While numerical approaches (using replicator dynamics) are dime a dozen, analytical approaches are rare. A particularly useful analytical approach is to utilize a mapping between the spin-1/2 Ising model in 1D and the social dilemma game and calculate the magnetization, which is the net difference between the fraction of cooperators and defectors in a social dilemma. In this paper, we look at the susceptibility, which probes the net change in the fraction of players adopting a certain strategy, for both classical and quantum social dilemmas. The reason being, in statistical mechanics problems, the thermodynamic susceptibility as compared to magnetization is a more sensitive probe for microscopic behavior, e.g., observing small changes in a population adopting a certain strategy. In this paper, we find the thermodynamic susceptibility for reward, sucker's payoff, and temptation in classical Prisoner's Dilemma to be positive, implying that the turnover from defect to cooperate is greater than vice versa, although the Nash equilibrium for the two-player game is to defect. In the classical hawk–dove game, the thermodynamic susceptibility for resource suggests that the number of players switching to hawk from dove strategy is dominant. Entanglement in Quantum Prisoner's Dilemma has a non-trivial role in determining the behavior of thermodynamic susceptibility. At maximal entanglement, we find that sucker's payoff and temptation increase the number of players switching to defect. In the zero-temperature limit, we find that there are two second-order phase transitions in the game, marked by a divergence in the susceptibility. Anticoordination and chimera states occur in a two-layer model of learning and coordination dynamics in fully connected networks. Learning occurs in the intra-layer networks, while a coordination game is played in the inter-layer network. In this paper, we study the robustness of these states against local effects introduced by the local connectivity of random networks. We identify threshold values for the mean degree of the networks such that below these values, local effects prevent the existence of anticoordination and chimera states found in the fully connected setting. Local effects in the intra-layer learning network are more important than in the inter-layer network in preventing the existence of anticoordination states. The local connectivity of the intra- and inter-layer networks is important to avoid the occurrence of chimera states, but the local effects are stronger in the inter-layer coordination network than in the intra-layer learning network. We also study the effect of local connectivity on the problem of equilibrium selection in the asymmetric coordination game, showing that local effects favor the selection of the Pareto-dominant equilibrium in situations in which the risk-dominant equilibrium is selected in the fully connected network. In this case, again, the important local effects are those associated with the coordination dynamics inter-layer network. Indeed, lower average degree of the network connectivity between layers reduces the probability of achieving the risk-dominant strategy, favoring the Pareto-dominant equilibrium. We consider the interacting processes between two diseases on multiplex networks, where each node can be infected by two interacting diseases with general interacting schemes. A discrete-time individual-based probability model is rigorously derived. By the bifurcation analysis of the equilibrium, we analyze the outbreak condition of one disease. The theoretical predictions are in good agreement with discrete-time stochastic simulations on scale-free networks. Furthermore, we discuss the influence of network overlap and dynamical parameters on the epidemic dynamical behaviors. The simulation results show that the network overlap has almost no effect on both epidemic threshold and prevalence. We also find that the epidemic threshold of one disease does not depend on all system parameters. We show, for the first time, the explicit form of the nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) subject to the correct boundary conditions that have to be satisfied by transport coefficients having a vanishing skew-symmetric piece. We also report, for the first time, the nonlinear PDEs (with the appropriate boundary conditions) for transport coefficients when the thermodynamic system is subject to two thermodynamic forces. Since the proposed PDEs have been derived without neglecting any term present in the dynamical equations (i.e., the energy, mass, and momentum balance equations), we propose them as a good candidate for describing transport in thermodynamic systems also far from equilibrium (e.g., in the turbulent regime). The preliminary test was carried out by analyzing a concrete example where Onsager's relationships manifestly disagree with experience: magnetically confined Tokamak-plasmas. More specifically, we focus our calculations to compute mass and energy transports in Frascati Tokamak Upgrade-plasmas subject to two thermodynamic forces. We show a good agreement between the theoretical predictions and the experimental data. In this paper, we expose some of the analytical framework used to prove the differentiability of equilibrium states probabilities with respect to the dynamics. We explore the relationship between Birkhoff metrics in cones and their corresponding anisotropic spaces and prove some useful folklore theorems. Multiscroll hidden attractors have attracted extensive research interest in recent years. However, the previously reported multiscroll hidden attractors belong to only one category of hidden attractors, namely, the hidden attractors without equilibrium points. Up to now, multiscroll hidden attractors with stable equilibrium points have not been reported. This paper proposes a multiscroll chaotic system with two equilibrium points. The number of scrolls can be increased by adding breakpoints of a nonlinear function. Moreover, the two equilibrium points are stable node-foci equilibrium points. According to the classification of hidden attractors, the multiscroll attractors generated by a novel system are the hidden attractors with stable equilibrium points. The dynamical characteristics of the novel system are studied using the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents, a bifurcation diagram, and a Poincaré map. We review generalized fluctuation-dissipation relations, which are valid under general conditions even in "nonstandard systems," e.g., out of equilibrium and/or without a Hamiltonian structure. The response functions can be expressed in terms of suitable correlation functions computed in the unperturbed dynamics. In these relations, typically, one has nontrivial contributions due to the form of the stationary probability distribution; such terms take into account the interaction among the relevant degrees of freedom in the system. We illustrate the general formalism with some examples in nonstandard cases, including driven granular media, systems with a multiscale structure, active matter, and systems showing anomalous diffusion. In this paper, we analyze the stability of the equilibrium point and Hopf bifurcation point in the three-component time-fractional differential equation, which describes the predator-prey interaction between different species. In the dynamics, the classical first-order derivative in time is modelled by either the Caputo or the Atangana-Baleanu fractional derivative of order α , 0 < α < 1. We utilized a fractional version of the Adams-Bashforth formula to discretize these fractional derivatives in time. In this paper, the dynamics of a modified Leslie-Gower predator-prey system with two delays and diffusion is considered. By calculating stability switching curves, the stability of positive equilibrium and the existence of Hopf bifurcation and double Hopf bifurcation are investigated on the parametric plane of two delays. Taking two time delays as bifurcation parameters, the normal form on the center manifold near the double Hopf bifurcation point is derived, and the unfoldings near the critical points are given. Finally, we obtain the complex dynamics near the double Hopf bifurcation point, including the existence of quasi-periodic solutions on a 2-torus, quasi-periodic solutions on a 3-torus, and strange attractors. We propose a hybrid multiscale coarse-grained (HMCG) method which combines a fine Monte Carlo (MC) simulation on the part of nodes of interest with a more coarse Langevin dynamics on the rest part. We demonstrate the validity of our method by analyzing the equilibrium Ising model and the nonequilibrium susceptible-infected-susceptible model. It is found that HMCG not only works very well in reproducing the phase transitions and critical phenomena of the microscopic models, but also accelerates the evaluation of dynamics with significant computational savings compared to microscopic MC simulations directly for the whole networks. The proposed method is general and can be applied to a wide variety of networked systems just adopting appropriate microscopic simulation methods and coarse graining approaches. As parameters are varied, a boundary equilibrium bifurcation (BEB) occurs when an equilibrium collides with a discontinuity surface in a piecewise-smooth system of ordinary differential equations. Under certain genericity conditions, at a BEB, the equilibrium either transitions to a pseudo-equilibrium (on the discontinuity surface) or collides and annihilates with a coexisting pseudo-equilibrium. These two scenarios are distinguished by the sign of a certain inner product. Here, it is shown that this sign can be determined from the number of unstable directions associated with the two equilibria by using techniques developed by Feigin. A normal form is proposed for BEBs in systems of any number of dimensions. The normal form involves a companion matrix, as does the leading order sliding dynamics, and so the connection to the stability of the equilibria is explicit. In two dimensions, the parameters of the normal form distinguish, in a simple way, the eight topologically distinct cases for the generic local dynamics at a BEB. A numerical exploration in three dimensions reveals that BEBs can create multiple attractors and chaotic attractors and that the equilibrium at the BEB can be unstable even if both equilibria are stable. The developments presented here stem from seemingly unutilised similarities between BEBs in discontinuous systems (specifically Filippov systems as studied here) and BEBs in continuous systems for which analogous results are, to date, more advanced. Two quite different types of causal effects are given by (i) changes in near future states of a driven system under changes in a current state of a driving system and (ii) changes in statistical characteristics of a driven system dynamics under changes in coupling parameters, e.g., under switching the coupling off. The former can be called transient causal effects and can be estimated from a time series within the well established framework of the Wiener–Granger causality, while the latter represent equilibrium (or stationary) causal effects which are often most interesting but generally inaccessible to estimation from an observed time series recorded at fixed coupling parameters. In this work, relationships between the two kinds of causal effects are found for unidirectionally coupled stochastic linear oscillators depending on their frequencies and damping factors. Approximate closed-form expressions for these relationships are derived. In this paper, we construct a competitive food supply chain network model in which the profit-maximizing producers decide not only as to the volume of fresh produce produced and distributed using various supply chain network pathways, but they also decide, with the associated costs, on the initial quality of the fresh produce. Consumers, in turn, respond to the various producers' product outputs through the prices that they are willing to pay, given also the average quality associated with each producer or brand at the retail outlets. The quality of the fresh produce is captured through explicit formulae that incorporate time, temperature, and other link characteristics with links associated with processing, shipment, storage, etc. Capacities on links are also incorporated as well as upper bounds on the initial product quality of the firms at their production/harvesting sites. The governing concept of the competitive supply chain network model is that of Nash Equilibrium, for which alternative variational inequality formulations are derived, along with existence results. An algorithmic procedure, which can be interpreted as a discrete-time tatonnement process, is then described and applied to compute the equilibrium produce flow patterns and accompanying link Lagrange multipliers in a realistic case study, focusing on peaches, which includes disruptions. This paper aims to report two novel bursting patterns, the turnover-of-pitchfork-hysteresis-induced bursting and the compound pitchfork-hysteresis bursting, demonstrated for the Duffing system with multiple-frequency parametric excitations. Typically, a hysteresis behavior between the origin and non-zero equilibria of the fast subsystem can be observed due to delayed pitchfork bifurcation. Based on numerical analysis, we show that the stable equilibrium branches, related to the non-zero equilibria resulted from the pitchfork bifurcation, may become the ones with twists and turns. Then, the novel bursting pattern turnover-of-pitchfork-hysteresis-induced bursting is revealed accordingly. In particular, we show that additional pitchfork bifurcation points may appear in the fast subsystem under certain parameter conditions. This creates multiple delay-induced hysteresis behavior and helps us to reveal the other novel bursting pattern, the compound pitchfork-hysteresis bursting. An extension of classical irreversible thermodynamics pioneered by Ilya Prigogine is developed, in which fluctuations of macroscopic observables accounting for microscopic-scale processes are incorporated. The contribution of the fluctuations to the entropy production is derived from a generalized entropy balance equation and expressed in terms of the fluctuating variables, via an extended local equilibrium Ansatz and in terms of the probability distributions of these variables. The model of a memristor-based oscillator with cubic nonlinearity is studied. The considered system has infinitely many equilibrium points, which build a line of equilibria in the phase space. Numerical modeling of the dynamics is combined with the bifurcational analysis. It has been shown that the oscillation excitation has distinctive features of the supercritical Andronov-Hopf bifurcation and can be achieved by changing of a parameter value as well as by variation of initial conditions. This article outlines sufficient conditions under which a one-dimensional chain of identical nonlinear oscillators can display complex spatio-temporal behavior. The units are described by phase equations and consist of excitable oscillators. The interactions are local and the network is poised to a critical state by balancing excitation and inhibition locally. The results presented here suggest that in networks composed of many oscillatory units with local interactions, excitability together with balanced interactions is sufficient to give rise to complex emergent features. For values of the parameters where complex behavior occurs, the system also displays a high-dimensional bifurcation where an exponentially large number of equilibria are borne in pairs out of multiple saddle-node bifurcations. We report on the finding of hidden hyperchaos in a 5D extension to a known 3D self-exciting homopolar disc dynamo. The hidden hyperchaos is identified through three positive Lyapunov exponents under the condition that the proposed model has just two stable equilibrium states in certain regions of parameter space. The new 5D hyperchaotic self-exciting homopolar disc dynamo has multiple attractors including point attractors, limit cycles, quasi-periodic dynamics, hidden chaos or hyperchaos, as well as coexisting attractors. We use numerical integrations to create the phase plane trajectories, produce bifurcation diagram, and compute Lyapunov exponents to verify the hidden attractors. Because no unstable equilibria exist in two parameter regions, the system has a multistability and six kinds of complex dynamic behaviors. To the best of our knowledge, this feature has not been previously reported in any other high-dimensional system. Moreover, the 5D hyperchaotic system has been simulated using a specially designed electronic circuit and viewed on an oscilloscope, thereby confirming the results of the numerical integrations. Both Matlab and the oscilloscope outputs produce similar phase portraits. We describe the design, construction, and dynamics of low-cost mechanical arrays of 3D-printed bistable elements whose shapes interact with wind to couple them one-way. Unlike earlier hydromechanical unidirectional arrays, our aeromechanical one-way arrays are simpler, easier to study, and exhibit a broader range of phenomena. Solitary waves or solitons propagate in one direction at speeds proportional to wind speeds. Periodic boundaries enable solitons to annihilate in pairs in arrays with an even number of elements. Solitons propagate indefinitely in odd arrays that frustrate pairing. Large noise spontaneously creates soliton-antisoliton pairs. This paper is concerned with the asymptotical stabilization for a class of unstable delay differential equations. Continuous-time delayed feedback controller (C-TDFC) and discrete-time delayed feedback controller (D-TDFC) are presented and studied, respectively. To our best knowledge, applying Hopf bifurcation theory to delay differential equations with D-TDFC is original and meaningful. The difficulty brought by the introduction of sampling period has been overcome. An effective control range which ensures the asymptotical stability of equilibrium for the system with C-TDFC is obtained. Sequently, another effective control range for the system with D-TDFC is gotten, which approximates the one of C-TDFCS provided that the sampling period is sufficiently small. Meanwhile, efforts are paid to estimate a bound on sampling period. Finally, the theoretical results are applied to a physiological system to illustrate the effectiveness of the two control ranges. Equilibrium statistical mechanics allows the prediction of collective behaviors of large numbers of interacting objects from just a few system-wide properties; however, a similar theory does not exist for far-from-equilibrium systems exhibiting complex spatial and temporal behavior. We propose a method for predicting behaviors in a broad class of such systems and apply these ideas to an archetypal example, the spatiotemporal chaotic 1D complex Ginzburg-Landau equation in the defect chaos regime. Building on the ideas of Ruelle and of Cross and Hohenberg that a spatiotemporal chaotic system can be considered a collection of weakly interacting dynamical units of a characteristic size, the chaotic length scale, we identify underlying, mesoscale, chaotic units and effective interaction potentials between them. We find that the resulting equilibrium Takahashi model accurately predicts distributions of particle numbers. These results suggest the intriguing possibility that a class of far-from-equilibrium systems may be well described at coarse-grained scales by the wellestablished theory of equilibrium statistical mechanics. We survey general results relating patterns of synchrony to network topology, applying the formalism of coupled cell systems. We also discuss patterns of phase-locking for periodic states, where cells have identical waveforms but regularly spaced phases. We focus on rigid patterns, which are not changed by small perturbations of the differential equation. Symmetry is one mechanism that creates patterns of synchrony and phase-locking. In general networks, there is another: balanced colorings of the cells. A symmetric network may have anomalous patterns of synchrony and phase-locking that are not consequences of symmetry. We introduce basic notions on coupled cell networks and their associated systems of admissible differential equations. Periodic states also possess spatio-temporal symmetries, leading to phase relations; these are classified by the H/K theorem and its analog for general networks. Systematic general methods for computing the stability of synchronous states exist for symmetric networks, but stability in general networks requires methods adapted to special classes of model equations. A dynamical system is said to undergo rate-induced tipping when it fails to track its quasi-equilibrium state due to an above-critical-rate change of system parameters. We study a prototypical model for rate-induced tipping, the saddle-node normal form subject to time-varying equilibrium drift and noise. We find that both most commonly used early-warning indicators, increase in variance and increase in autocorrelation, occur not when the equilibrium drift is fastest but with a delay. We explain this delay by demonstrating that the most likely trajectory for tipping also crosses the tipping threshold with a delay, and therefore, the tipping itself is delayed. We find solutions of the variational problem determining the most likely tipping path using numerical continuation techniques. This article aims at analysing a two-sector economic growth model with discrete delays. The focus is on the dynamic properties of the emerging system. In particular, this study concentrates on the stability properties of the stationary solution, characterised by analytical results and geometrical techniques (stability crossing curves), and the conditions under which oscillatory dynamics emerge (through Hopf bifurcations). Basin of attraction of a stable equilibrium point is an effective concept for stability analysis in deterministic systems; however, it does not contain information on the external perturbations that may affect it. Here we introduce the concept of stochastic basin of attraction (SBA) by incorporating a suitable probabilistic notion of basin. We define criteria for the size of the SBA based on the escape probability, which is one of the deterministic quantities that carry dynamical information and can be used to quantify dynamical behavior of the corresponding stochastic basin of attraction. SBA is an efficient tool to describe the metastable phenomena complementing the known exit time, escape probability, or relaxation time. Moreover, the geometric structure of SBA gives additional insight into the system's dynamical behavior, which is important for theoretical and practical reasons. This concept can be used not only in models with small noise intensity but also with noise whose amplitude is proportional or in general is a function of an order parameter. As an application of our main results, we analyze a three potential well system perturbed by two types of noise: Brownian motion and non-Gaussian α-stable Lévy motion. Our main conclusions are that the thermal fluctuations stabilize the metastable system with an asymmetric three-well potential but have the opposite effect for a symmetric one. For Lévy noise with larger jumps and lower jump frequencies (α = 0:5) metastability is enhanced for both symmetric and asymmetric potentials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

If a family of piecewise smooth systems depending on a real parameter is defined on two different regions of the plane separated by a switching surface, then a boundary equilibrium bifurcation occurs if a stationary point of one of the systems intersects the switching surface at a critical value of the parameter. We derive the leading order terms of a normal form for boundary equilibrium bifurcations of planar systems. This makes it straightforward to derive a complete classification of the bifurcations that can occur. We are thus able to confirm classic results of Filippov [Differential Equations with Discontinuous Right Hand Sides (Kluwer, Dordrecht, 1988)] using different and more transparent methods, and explain why the 'missing' cases of Hogan et al. A numerical and analytical study of the relaxation to equilibrium of both the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) α-model and the integrable Toda model, when the fundamental mode is initially excited, is reported. We show that the dynamics of both systems is almost identical on the short term, when the energies of the initially unexcited modes grow in geometric progression with time, through a secular avalanche process. At the end of this first stage of the dynamics, the time-averaged modal energy spectrum of the Toda system stabilizes to its final profile, well described, at low energy, by the spectrum of a q-breather. The Toda equilibrium state is clearly shown to describe well the long-living quasi-state of the FPU system. On the long term, the modal energy spectrum of the FPU system slowly detaches from the Toda one by a diffusive-like rising of the tail modes, and eventually reaches the equilibrium flat shape. We find a simple law describing the growth of tail modes, which enables us to estimate the time-scale to equipartition of the FPU system, even when, at small energies, it becomes unobservable. We investigate the role of multistable states on the occurrence of vibrational resonance in a periodic potential system driven by both a low-frequency and a high-frequency periodic force in both underdamped and overdamped limits. In both cases, when the amplitude of the high-frequency force is varied, the response amplitude at the low-frequency exhibits a series of resonance peaks and approaches a limiting value. Using a theoretical approach, we analyse the mechanism of multiresonance in terms of the resonant frequency and the stability of the equilibrium points of the equation of motion of the slow variable. In the overdamped system, the response amplitude is always higher than in the absence of the high-frequency force. However, in the underdamped system, this happens only if the low-frequency is less than 1. In the underdamped system, the response amplitude is maximum when the equilibrium point around which slow oscillations take place is maximally stable and minimum at the transcritical bifurcation. And in the overdamped system, it is maximum at the transcritical bifurcation and minimum when the associated equilibrium point is maximally stable. In this paper we study the qualitative dynamics of piecewise-smooth slow-fast systems (singularly perturbed systems) which are everywhere continuous. We consider phase space topology of systems with one-dimensional slow dynamics and one-dimensional fast dynamics. The slow manifold of the reduced system is formed by a piecewise-continuous curve, and the differentiability is lost across the switching surface. In the full system the slow manifold is no longer continuous, and there is an O(&eh;) discontinuity across the switching manifold, but the discontinuity cannot qualitatively alter system dynamics. Revealed phase space topology is used to unfold qualitative dynamics of planar slow-fast systems with an equilibrium point on the switching surface. In this case the local dynamics corresponds to so-called boundary-equilibrium bifurcations, and four qualitative phase portraits are uncovered. Our results are then used to investigate the dynamics of a box model of a thermohaline circulation, and the presence of a boundary-equilibrium bifurcation of a fold type is shown. Oscillation death (also called amplitude death), a phenomenon of coupling induced stabilization of an unstable equilibrium, is studied for an arbitrary symmetric complex network with delay-coupled oscillators, and the critical conditions for its linear stability are explicitly obtained. All cases including one oscillator, a pair of oscillators, regular oscillator networks, and complex oscillator networks with delay feedback coupling, can be treated in a unified form. For an arbitrary symmetric network, we find that the corresponding smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian λN (0 >λN ≥ -1) completely determines the death island, and as λN is located within the insensitive parameter region for nearly all complex networks, the death island keeps nearly the largest and does not sensitively depend on the complex network structures. This insensitivity effect has been tested for many typical complex networks including Watts-Strogatz (WS) and Newman-Watts (NW) small world networks, general scale-free (SF) networks, Erdos-Renyi (ER) random networks, geographical networks, and networks with community structures and is expected to be helpful for our understanding of dynamics on complex networks. A typical objective of bifurcation control is to delay the onset of undesirable bifurcation. In this paper, the problem of Hopf bifurcation control in a second-order congestion control model is considered. In particular, a suitable Hopf bifurcation is created at a desired location with preferred properties and a dynamic delayed feedback controller is developed for the creation of the Hopf bifurcation. With this controller, one can increase the critical value of the communication delay, and thus guarantee a stationary data sending rate for larger delay. Furthermore, explicit formulae to determine the period and the direction of periodic solutions bifurcating from the equilibrium are obtained by applying perturbation approach. This paper addresses the fundamental problem of complex network synchronizability from a graph-theoretic approach. First, the existing results are briefly reviewed. Then, the relationships between the network synchronizability and network structural parameters (e.g., average distance, degree distribution, and node betweenness centrality) are discussed. The effects of the complementary graph of a given network and some graph operations on the network synchronizability are discussed. A basic theory based on subgraphs and complementary graphs for estimating the network synchronizability is established. Several examples are given to show that adding new edges to a network can either increase or decrease the network synchronizability. To that end, some new results on the estimations of the synchronizability of coalescences are reported. Moreover, a necessary and sufficient condition for a network and its complementary network to have the same synchronizability is derived. This paper studies the existence of Hölder continuity of generalized synchronization (GS). Based on the modified system approach, GS is classified into three types: equilibrium GS, periodic GS, and C-GS, when the modified system has an asymptotically stable equilibrium, asymptotically stable limit cycles, and chaotic attractors, respectively.
