Urban rail transit networks have become the most important traffic modal and greatly improve the traffic environment and travel efficiency of metropolis, and the critical station identification and robustness assessment of urban rail transit networks have become more and more important. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive vote-rank (CVR) algorithm to identify the critical stations, and adopt mutual information and k -center clustering algorithm to analyze the similar characteristics of passenger flow on different dates of urban rail transit networks. Meanwhile, Shanghai metro network is chosen as the example and we find that the optimal classification of passenger flow on different dates is 2 categories, and the passenger flows have the significant differences between conventional day and unconventional day. The results show that the critical stations on unconventional day are farther from the city center than the critical stations on conventional day, and some critical stations locate in the suburbs on unconventional day. Moreover, we study the structural and functional robustness characteristics of urban rail transit networks subjected to continuous malicious attacks to the top critical nodes, and the results show that Shanghai metro network has the worse robustness subjected to malicious attacks. Compared with the existed methods, we can declare that the proposed CVR algorithm is the most effective method for critical station identification and robustness assessment among the discussed methods in this paper, and this study will provide theoretical and practical support for the safe operation of urban rail transit networks. We propose a cross horizontal visibility graph (CHVG) algorithm to explore associations between two time series. As a natural extension of the classic horizontal visibility graph algorithm, the proposed CHVG algorithm can preserve merits of the classic algorithm in construction and implementation. To verify the effectiveness of the CHVG algorithm, we design numerical simulations by generating paired time series with three experimental settings: namely independent autocorrelated series, cross-correlated series with no autocorrelation, and cross-correlated series with autocorrelation. The corresponding CHVGs can be accordingly constructed from these generated pairs of time series. Our results show that the degree distributions of all constructed CHVGs follow exponential distributions P (k) ∼ e − λ k . Furthermore, the estimated exponent λ can reflect associations between two time series, mainly due to their cross correlation but also relevant to autocorrelation of individual series. We demonstrate the applicability of the proposed CHVG algorithm by investigating associations between the air pollutant PM 10 and the meteorological factors (i.e., temperature and relative humidity) at two stations in Hong Kong. Our algorithm can effectively capture the negative cross correlations between all combinations pairing the pollutant PM 10 and one of the two meteorological factors at both stations, which sheds light on understanding, modeling, and prediction of the air pollution process. • A cross horizontal visibility graph (CHVG) algorithm is proposed. • The CHVG algorithm preserves merits of the classic HVG algorithm. • CHVGs created from pairs of simulated series have exponential degree distributions. • The exponents of degree distributions reveal associations between two time series. • The applicability of the CHVG algorithm is verified by an air pollution case study. Multifractal analysis of complex networks has attracted increasing interest in various fields of science, because it can help us unfold the intricate structure of a variety of networks for better understanding the underlying mechanism of these networks. In this study, we propose a sandbox edge-based (SBEB) multifractal analysis algorithm, which introduces the idea of the sandbox algorithm into the existing edge-based box-counting (EBBC) algorithm. Instead of using boxes to cover the nodes of a given network, the SBEB algorithm uses boxes to cover the entries '1' in the adjacency matrix of the network, where these entries '1' represent the edges of the network. We apply the SBEB algorithm to model networks to verify its effectiveness and feasibility. The results show that the SBEB algorithm can effectively capture the multifractal nature of these model networks. Compared with the existing EBBC algorithm, our algorithm greatly improves the linearity and smoothness in estimating the mass exponents τ (q) and the generalized fractal dimensions D (q) , thereby resulting in more accurate estimates. In addition, the SBEB algorithm inherits the advantage of the existing EBBC algorithm on studying small-diameter networks which are difficult to be dealt with by the traditional node-based box-covering algorithms. In this paper, the generalized potential function, the stationary probability distribution function (SPDF), the mean development time and the mean shrinking time of a time-delayed vegetation growth system induced by cross-correlated internal and external noises are investigated. Our main results are designed to reveal the fact that the resonant phenomenon of the mean first-passage time (MFPT) takes place in the vegetation growth model because of the interaction of different types of noises and time delay. It can inhibit the vegetation system from developing rapidly and reduce the stability of the system by increasing of intensity of multiplicative noise and time delay. Meanwhile, it can produce beneficial effect on maintaining the stability of the vegetation system by increasing the strength of correlated noise. However, it can exert complicated effect on the stability of system by increasing the intensity of additive noise in different cases. During the spread process of the vegetation, it plays a positive role in propelling the development of vegetation by reducing the cross-correlated noise strength and increasing the multiplicative, additive noise intensities and time delay. On the contrary, in the decline process of vegetation system, it plays a crucial part in maintaining the vegetation biomass by increasing the strength of cross-correlated noise and weaken the multiplicative, additive noise intensities and time delay.
