It has been shown that natural interval extensions (NIE) can be used to calculate the largest positive Lyapunov exponent (LLE). However, the elaboration of NIE are not always possible for some dynamical systems, such as those modelled by simple equations or by Simulink-type blocks. In this paper, we use rounding mode of floating-point numbers to compute the LLE. We have exhibited how to produce two pseudo-orbits by means of different rounding modes; these pseudo-orbits are used to calculate the Lower Bound Error (LBE). The LLE is the slope of the line gotten from the logarithm of the LBE, which is estimated by means of a recursive least square algorithm (RLS). The main contribution of this paper is to develop a procedure to compute the LLE based on the LBE without using the NIE. Additionally, with the aid of RLS the number of required points has been decreased. Eight numerical examples are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed technique.

This paper illustrates an approach to generate multi-wing attractors in coupled Lorenz systems. In particular, novel four-wing (eight-wing) hyperchaotic attractors are generated by coupling two (three) identical Lorenz systems. The paper shows that the equilibria of the proposed systems have certain symmetries with respect to specific coordinate planes and the eigenvalues of the associated Jacobian matrices exhibit the property of similarity. In analogy with the original Lorenz system, where the two-wings of the butterfly attractor are located around the two equilibria with the unstable pair of complex-conjugate eigenvalues, this paper shows that the four-wings (eight-wings) of these attractors are located around the four (eight) equilibria with two (three) pairs of unstable complex-conjugate eigenvalues.

Comprehensive numerical simulations (reviewed in Dissipative Solitons, Akhmediev and Ankiewicz (Eds.), Springer, Berlin, 2005) of pulse solutions of the cubic–quintic Ginzburg–Landau Equation (CGLE), a canonical equation governing the weakly nonlinear behavior of dissipative systems in a wide variety of disciplines, reveal various intriguing and entirely novel classes of solutions. In particular, there are five new classes of pulse or solitary waves solutions, viz. pulsating, creeping, snake, erupting, and chaotic solitons. In contrast to the regular solitary waves investigated in numerous integrable and non-integrable systems over the last three decades, these dissipative solitons are not stationary in time. Rather, they are spatially confined pulse-type structures whose envelopes exhibit complicated temporal dynamics. The numerical simulations also reveal very interesting bifurcations sequences of these pulses as the parameters of the CGLE are varied. In this paper, we address the issues of central interest in the area, i.e., the conditions for the occurrence of the five categories of dissipative solitons, as well the dependence of both their shape and their stability on the various parameters of the CGLE, viz. the nonlinearity, dispersion, linear and nonlinear gain, loss and spectral filtering parameters. Our predictions on the variation of the soliton amplitudes, widths and periods with the CGLE parameters agree with simulation results. First, we elucidate the Hopf bifurcation mechanism responsible for the various pulsating solitary waves, as well as its absence in Hamiltonian and integrable systems where such structures are absent. Next, we develop and discuss a variational formalism within which to explore the various classes of dissipative solitons. Given the complex dynamics of the various dissipative solutions, this formulation is, of necessity, significantly generalized over all earlier approaches in several crucial ways. Firstly, the starting formulation for the Lagrangian is recent and not well explored. Also, the trial functions have been generalized considerably over conventional ones to keep the shape relatively simple (and the trial function integrable!) while allowing arbitrary temporal variation of the amplitude, width, position, speed and phase of the pulses. In addition, the resulting Euler–Lagrange equations are treated in a completely novel way. Rather than consider the stable fixed points which correspond to the well-known stationary solitons or plain pulses, we use dynamical systems theory to focus on more complex attractors viz. periodic, quasiperiodic, and chaotic ones. Periodic evolution of the trial function parameters on stable periodic attractors yield solitons whose amplitudes and widths are non-stationary or time dependent. In particular, pulsating and snake dissipative solitons may be treated in this manner. Detailed results are presented here for the pulsating solitary waves – their regimes of occurrence, bifurcations, and the parameter dependences of the amplitudes, widths, and periods agree with simulation results. Snakes and chaotic solitons will be addressed in subsequent papers. This overall approach fails only to address the fifth class of dissipative solitons, viz. the exploding or erupting solitons.

This paper presents an analysis of the dynamical behaviour of a non-symmetric oscillator with piecewise-linearity. The Chen–Langford (C–L) method is used to obtain the averaged system of the oscillator. Using this method, the local bifurcation and the stability of the steady-state solutions are studied. A Runge–Kutta method, Poincaré map and the largest Lyapunov’s exponent are used to detect the complex dynamical phenomena of the system. It is found that the system with piecewise-linearity exhibits periodic oscillations, period-doubling, period-3 solution and then chaos. When chaos is found, it is detected by examining the phase plane, bifurcation diagram and the largest Lyapunov’s exponent. The results obtained in this paper show that the vibration system with piecewise-linearity do exhibit quite similar dynamical behaviour to the discrete system given by the logistic map.

In this paper, we sought and presented an 8-Dimensional deterministic mathematical COVID-19 dynamic model that accounted for the global stability analysis of the role of dual-bilinear treatment protocols of COVID-19 infection. The model, which is characterized by human-to-human transmission mode was investigated using dual non-pharmaceutical (face-masking and social distancing) and dual pharmaceutical (hydroxylchloroquine and azithromycin) as control functions following the interplay of susceptible population and varying infectious population. First, we investigated the model state-space and then established and computed the system reproduction number for both off-treatment ℜ 0 ( 1 ) = 10.94 and for onset-treatment ℜ 0 ( 2 ) = 3.224 . We considered the model for off-treatment and thereafter by incorporating the theory of LaSalle's invariant principle into the classical method of Lyapunov functions, we presented an approach for global stability analysis of COVID-19 dynamics. Numerical verification of system theoretical predictions was computed using in-built Runge-Kutta of order of precision 4 in a Mathcad surface. The set approach produces highly significant results in the main text. For example, while rapid population extinction was observed by the susceptible under off-treatment scenario in the first t f ≤ 18 days, the application of non-pharmaceuticals at early stage of infection proved very effective strategy in curtailing the spread of the virus. Moreso, the implementation of dual pharmacotherapies in conjunction with non-pharmaceuticals yields tremendous rejuvenation of susceptible population ( 0.5 ≤ S p ( t ) ≤ 3.143 c e l l s / m l 3 ) with maximal reduction in the rates of isolation, super spreaders and hospitalization of the infectives. Thus, experimental results of investigation affirm the suitability of proposed model for the control and treatment of the deadly disease provided individuals adheres to treatment protocols.

Most of the nations with deplorable health conditions lack rapid COVID-19diagnostic test due to limited testing kits and laboratories. The un-diagnosticmild cases (who show no critical sign and symptoms) play the role as a route that spread the infection unknowingly to healthy individuals. In this paper, we present a fractional order SIR model incorporating individual with mild cases as a compartment to become SMIR model. The existence of the solutions of the model is investigated by solving the fractional Gronwall's inequality using the Laplace transform approach. The equilibrium solutions (DFE & Endemic) are found to be locally asymptotically stable, and subsequently the basic reproduction number is obtained. Also the global stability analysis is carried out by constructing Lyapunov function. Lastly, numerical simulations that support analytic solution follow. It was also shown that when the rate of infection of the mild cases increases, there is equivalent increase in the overall population of infected individuals. Hence to curtail the spread of the disease there is need to take care of the Mild cases as well.

The risk of propagation of infectious diseases such as avian influenza and COVID-19 is generally controlled or reduced by quarantine measures. Considering this situation, a network-based SIQS (susceptible-infected-quarantined-susceptible) infectious disease model with nonmonotone incidence rate is established and analyzed in this paper. The psychological impact of the transmission of certain diseases in heterogeneous networks at high levels of infection may be characterized by the related nonmonotone incidence rate. The expressions of the basic reproduction number and equilibria of the model are determined analytically. We demonstrate in detail the uniform persistence of system and the global asymptotic stability of the disease-free equilibrium. The global attractivity of the unique endemic equilibrium is discussed by using monotone iteration technique. We obtain that the endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable under certain conditions by constructing appropriate Lyapunov function. In addition, numerical simulations are performed to indicate the theoretical results.

The spatially discrete-continuous dynamical systems, that are composed of a spatially extended medium coupled with a set of lumped elements, are frequently met in different fields, ranging from electronics to multicellular structures in living systems. Due to the natural heterogeneity of such systems, the calculation of Lyapunov exponents for them appears to be a challenging task, since the conventional techniques in this case often become unreliable and inaccurate. The paper suggests an effective approach to calculate Lyapunov exponents for discrete-continuous dynamical systems, which we test in stability analysis of two representative models from different fields. Namely, we consider a mathematical model of a 1D transferred electron device coupled with a lumped resonant circuit, and a phenomenological neuronal model of spreading depolarization, which involves 2D diffusive medium. We demonstrate that the method proposed is able reliably recognize regular, chaotic and hyperchaotic dynamics in the systems under study.

We introduce an efficient algorithm for computing fractional integrals and derivatives and apply it for solving problems of the calculus of variations of fractional order. The proposed approximations are particularly useful for solving fractional boundary value problems. As an application, we solve a special class of fractional Euler-Lagrange equations. The method is based on Hale and Townsend algorithm for finding the roots and weights of the fractional Gauss-Jacobi quadrature rule and the predictor-corrector method introduced by Diethelm for solving fractional differential equations. Illustrative examples show that the given method is more accurate than the one introduced in [Comput. Math. This paper derives the stochastic solution of a Cauchy problem for the distribution of a fractional diffusion process. The governing equation involves the Bessel-Riesz derivative (in space) to model heavy tails of the distribution, and the Caputo-Djrbashian derivative (in time) to depicts the memory of the diffusion process. The solution is obtained as Brownian motion with time change in terms of the Bessel-Riesz subordinator on the inverse stable subordinator. This stochastic solution, named fractional Bessel-Riesz motion, provides a method to simulate a large class of stochastic motions with memory and heavy tails.

In this paper we study two entropic dynamical models from the viewpoint of information geometry. We study the geometry structures of the associated statistical manifolds. In order to analyse the character of the instability of the systems, we obtain their geodesics and compute their Jacobi vector fields. Our results and examples show how transformations between self-similar sets may be continuous almost everywhere with respect to measures on the sets and may be used to carry well known notions from analysis and functional analysis, for example flows and spectral analysis, from familiar settings to new ones. The focus of this paper is on a number of surprising applications including what we call fractal Fourier analysis, in which the graphs of the basis functions are Cantor sets, discontinuous at a countable dense set of points, yet have good approximation properties. In a sequel, the focus will be on Lebesgue measure-preserving flows whose wave-fronts are fractals. The key idea is to use fractal transformations to provide unitary transformations between Hilbert spaces defined on attractors of iterated function systems.

a mathematical model depicting the spread of covid-19 epidemic and implementation of population covid-19 intervention in Italy. The model has 8 components leading to system of 8 ordinary differential equations. In this paper, we investigate the model using the concept of fractional differential operator. A numerical method based on the Lagrange polynomial was used to solve the system equations depicting the spread of COVID-19. A detailed investigation of stability including reproductive number using the next generation matrix, and the Lyapunov were presented in detail. Numerical simulations are depicted for various fractional orders.

In this paper, we construct the Sato theory including the Hirota bilinear equations and tau function of a new $q$-deformed Toda hierarchy(QTH). Meanwhile the Block type additional symmetry and bi-Hamiltonian structure of this hierarchy are given. From Hamiltonian tau symmetry, we give another definition of tau function of this hierarchy. Afterwards, we extend the $q$-Toda hierarchy to an extended $q$-Toda hierarchy(EQTH) which satisfy a generalized Hirota quadratic equation in terms of generalized vertex operators. The Hirota quadratic equation might have further application in Gromov-Witten theory. The corresponding Sato theory including multi-fold Darboux transformations of this extended hierarchy is also constructed. In this paper we give a detailed Hopf bifurcation analysis of a ratio-dependent predator prey system involving two different discrete delays. By analyzing the characteristic equation associated with the model, its linear stability is investigated. Choosing delay terms as bifurcation parameters the existence of Hopf bifurcations is demonstrated. Stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions is determined by using the center manifold theorem and the normal form theory introduced by Hassard et al. Furthermore, some of the bifurcation properties including direction, stability and period are given. Finally, theoretical results are supported by some numerical simulations. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. In this paper we present a general theoretical framework from which several known results (a some new ones) on the existence and stability of solitons can be recovered. We give an abstract definition of solitary wave and soliton and we develope an abstract existence theory. This theory provides a powerful tool to study the existence of solitons for the Klein–Gordon equations as well as for gauge theories. Applying this theory, we prove the existence of a continuous family of stable charged Q-balls.

The paper investigates the impact of delayed tax revenues on the fiscal policy out-comes. Choosing the delay as a bifurcation parameter we study the direction and the stability of the bifurcating periodic solutions. We show when the system is stable with respect to the delay. Some numerical examples are given to confirm the theoretical results.

In this paper, we find that, by computing the difference between two consecutive state vectors of second-order double-loop sigma-delta modulators (SDMs) and plotting one component of the subtracted vectors against the other component, irregular chaotic patterns will become two vertical lines. By multiplying a matrix on the subtracted vectors, it can be further transformed to two fixed points. However, second-order interpolative bandpass SDMs still exhibit chaotic behaviors after applying the same transformations. Moreover, it is found that the Lyapunov exponent of state vectors of second-order double-loop SDMs is higher than that of second-order interpolative bandpass SDMs, whereas the Lyapunov exponent of transformed vectors becomes negative infinity for second-order double-loop SDMs and increases for second-order interpolative bandpass SDMs. Hence, by examining the occurrence of chaotic behaviors of the transformed vectors of these two SDMs, these two SDMs can be distinguished from their state vectors and their transformed vectors without solving the state equations and knowing the information of input signals.

The paper proposes an extension of the Lagrange analytical mechanics to deal with dynamics of fractal nature. First of all, by using fractional difference, one introduces a slight modification of the Riemann–Liouville derivative definition, which is more consistent with self-similarity by removing the effect of the initial value, and then for the convenience of the reader, one gives a brief background on the Taylor’s series of fractional order f ( x + h ) = E α ( h α D x α ) f ( x ) of nondifferentiable function, where Eα is the Mittag–Leffler function. The Lagrange characteristics method is extended for solving a class of nonlinear fractional partial differential equations. All this material is necessary to solve the problem of fractional optimal control and mainly to find the characteristics of its fractional Hamilton–Jacobi equation, therefore the canonical equations of optimality. Then fractional Lagrangian mechanics is considered as an application of fractional optimal control. In this framework, the use of complex-valued variables, as Nottale did it, appears as a direct consequence of the irreversibility of time.

In this paper, based on the close relationship between the Weierstrass elliptic function ℘( ξ ; g 2 , g 3 ) and nonlinear ordinary differential equation, a Weierstrass elliptic function expansion method is developed in terms of the Weierstrass elliptic function instead of many Jacobi elliptic functions . The mechanism is constructive and can be carried out in computer with the aid of computer algebra ( Maple ). Many important nonlinear wave equations arising from nonlinear science are chosen to illustrate this technique such as the new integrable Davey–Stewartson-type equation, the (2 + 1)-dimensional modified KdV equation, the generalized Hirota equation in 2 + 1 dimensions, the Generalized KdV equation, the (2 + 1)-dimensional modified Novikov–Veselov equations, (2 + 1)-dimensional generalized system of modified KdV equation, the coupled Klein–Gordon equation, and the (2 + 1)-dimensional generalization of coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equation. As a consequence, some new doubly periodic solutions are obtained in terms of the Weierstrass elliptic function. Moreover solitary wave solutions and singular solitary wave solutions are also given as simple limits of doubly periodic solutions. These solutions may be useful to explain some physical phenomena. The algorithm is also applied to other many nonlinear wave equations. Moreover we also present the general form of the method.

International audience; This paper is devoted to the study of the stability of limit cycles of a nonlinear delay differential equation with a distributed delay. The equation arises from a model of population dynamics describing the evolution of a pluripotent stem cells population. We study the local asymptotic stability of the unique nontrivial equilibrium of the delay equation and we show that its stability can be lost through a Hopf bifurcation. We then investigate the stability of the limit cycles yielded by the bifurcation using the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem. We illustrate our results with some numerics.

In this paper we discuss chaotic attractor-to-chaotic attractor transitions in two-dimensional multiparameter maps as an external parameter is varied. We show that the transitions are sharply defined and may be classed as second-order phase transitions. We obtain scaling laws, about the critical point Ac, for the average positive Lyapunov exponent, (λ+−λc+)∼|A−Ac|β, where λc+ is the value of the positive Lyapunov exponent at crisis, and the average crisis induced mean lifetime τ∼|A−Ac|−γ, where A is the parameter that is varied. Here average means averaged over many initial conditions. Furthermore we find that there is an algebraic relationship between the critical exponents and the correlation dimension Dc at the critical point Ac, namely, β+γ+Dc=constant. We find this constant to be approximately 2.31. We postulate that this is a universal relationship for second-order phase transitions in two-dimensional multiparameter non-hyperbolic maps.

In this paper, we present some conventional feedback controller design principles for chaos control, with mathematical controllability conditions derived via the Lyapunov function methods. The chaotic Chua's circuit and Duffing oscillator are used as examples to illustrate the fundamental concepts and basic methodology employed by this unified Lyapunov approach, in both linear and non-linear controllers design, for the control of chaotic dynamics.

In this paper we use a path-integral approach to represent the Lyapunov exponents of both deterministic and stochastic dynamical systems. In both cases the relevant correlation functions are obtained from a (one-dimensional) supersymmetric field theory whose Hamiltonian, in the deterministic case, coincides with the Lie derivative of the associated Hamiltonian flow. The generalized Lyapunov exponents turn out to be related to the partition functions of the respective super-Hamiltonian restricted to the spaces of fixed form-degree.

This paper explores the classification of parameter spaces for reaction-diffusion systems of two chemical species on stationary rectangular domains. The dynamics of the system are explored both in the absence and presence of diffusion. The parameter space is fully classified in terms of the types and stability of the uniform steady state. In the absence of diffusion the results on the classification of parameter space are supported by simulations of the corresponding vector-field and some trajectories of the phase-plane around the uniform steady state. In the presence of diffusion, the main findings are the quantitative analysis relating the domain-size with the reaction and diffusion rates and their corresponding influence on the dynamics of the reaction-diffusion system when perturbed in the neighbourhood of the uniform steady state. Theoretical predictions are supported by numerical simulations both in the presence as well as in the absence of diffusion. Conditions on the domain size with respect to the diffusion and reaction rates are related to the types of diffusion-driven instabilities namely Turing, Hopf and Transcritical types of bifurcations. The first condition is a lower bound on the area of a rectangular domain in terms of the diffusion and reaction rates, which is necessary for Hopf and Transcritical bifurcation to occur. The second condition is an upper bound on the area of domain in terms of reaction-diffusion rates that restricts the diffusion-driven instability to Turing type behaviour, whilst forbidding the existence of Hopf and Transcritical bifurcation. Theoretical findings are verified by the finite element solution of the coupled system on a two dimensional rectangular domain.
